Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) - Movie Review
Tumblr media
I just finished watching "Gangubai Kathiawadi" and it was phenomenal. It deserves all the praises it gets. If you want to feel something from a movie, go watch it. (And also it's on Netflix)
How a woman was sold to prostitution and slowly raised to gain power? Though lengthy, the plot was paced perfectly. It didn't rush to complete the story.
The dialogues hit hard as they are so powerful. For example, in a scene where Gangu was trying to get the children of the prostitutes admitted into a school, she was asked the identity of their father mockingly. And she replied with, "Isn't mother's name enough?" She even put humour to it and asked to add the name of a famous actor as the father of all the children. If you've already watched it, you know what I'm talking about...
And about Alia Bhatt, I think she did a great job and deserves all the praises.
But I think the character of Raziabai should be played by a real life eunuch. Apart from this, I overall enjoyed the film.

Gangubai Kathiawadi
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Gangubai Kathiawadi" is an Indian film in the Hindi language. The film, which stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role, is about Ganga Harjivandas, also known as Gangubai Kathiawadi, a sex worker who climbs the social ladder and ends up as a mafia don. Later, despite negotiating the perils of leading a criminal life, Gangubai utilizes her influence to elevate the voices of women and orphans. Gangubai is portrayed in the gripping and provocative film as a formidable woman from history, taking place in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) in the late 20th century.
The story of "Gangubai Kathiawadi" is based on a true story. The movie is a loose version of the book "Mafia Queens of Mumbai" by renowned Indian author and journalist Hussain Zaidi, namely the chapter "The Matriarch of Kamathipura," which is based on the life of the movie's lead character. Born in 1939 in Kathiawar, British India (now known as Gujarat), Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kathiawadi, was raised in this region. While Gangubai's early life is largely unknown, Zaidi gives some context in his work. Despite coming from a wealthy background, Gangubai always wanted to be an actor. So, when she was about sixteen, she and her lover, Ramnik Lal, left their house.
She spoke with legislators in an attempt to secure the right to education for orphans and women, as well as to raise their standard of living. Additionally, Gangubai was reportedly involved in illegal operations including drug sales, however, this has not been verified. Gangubai passed away in 2008, but sculptures and pictures at Kamathipura bear witness to her legacy.
The early years of Gangubai and how she rose to prominence in the Kamathipura community are faithfully portrayed in the movie. Her familial bond with Karim Lala (Rahim Lala) is authentic in the film. In the movie, Gangubai meets Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian prime minister of the time, while giving a speech in Azaad Maidan. Both instances are well-known, feature prominently in the story, and are also referenced in Zaidi's book.
But because there aren't many real accounts or records of Gangubai's life, Zaidi's book is the main source of information used in the movie. Gangubai adopted a number of orphans despite not having biological children of her own. These Gangubai family members filed a lawsuit against the movie's portrayal of her as a pimp and sex worker. Even still, Gangubai's status as a social worker and community leader is maintained throughout the film.

Group Film: Gangubai Kathiawadi
Why can some of the settings and spaces of your group film be considered heterotopia(s)?
A heterotopia is a real physical or mental space that acts as other spaces alongside existing spaces.
In Gangubai Kathiawadi, the film takes place in Kamathipura back in 1795, which is known for prostitution. The movie is based on the biography of a person known as Gangubai, whose life changed when becoming and entering the world of prostitution. As seen in the movie, Kamathipura and the other locations within it are already locations that are quite different from real existing locations and the modern-day Kamathipura, and seeing the said locations that were in 1795, through the eye set of a prostitute will make it seem more like a different world entirely.

One of the most eagerly awaited films featuring Alia Bhatt is "RRR," directed by the visionary filmmaker SS Rajamouli. Movie Recomendations for March
Hellooooo dears, I want to recommend these three movies I saw this month and I want to recommend them before the end of March. All three films deal with social issues around women in a raw way, so watch at your own caution.
The first is Ruido by the director Natalia Beristáin, it deals with the story of Julia who is in search of her daughter, Ger. This is a mexican film and portrays one of the harshest realities of the country. There are no heroes here, just victims trying to survive the reality they live in, and it's incredibly hard to watch, but you can't take your eyes off it. 10/10 I will recommend this film with my last breath.
Tumblr media
The second is Women Talking directed and written by Sarah Polley, winner of the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. The film is adapted from the book Women Talking by Miriam Towes, which is based on a real event in the Manitoba colony. Both the book and the film imagine scenarios about the reaction that could have to the actual event, and wow. They manage to objectively capture how different perspectives act between the women's decision to stay in their community or to leave. Very good film, but if it doesn't capture you in the first 10 or 20 minutes, better go to the end, so you can see their decision. This film is like watching a debate. I'm going to give it 9.5 out of 10, but it's still an excellent film.
Tumblr media
And the last one is Gangubai Kathiawadi directed and co-written by Sanjay Leela Bhansal with script help from Utkarshini Vashishtha. This film was also based on Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The film tells the life of Gangubai Kothewali and how she became an influential figure in Kamathipura, and eventually India. It's a very good film, and can be an interesting opening for people who want to watch Bollywood movies. The actress, writers and director do a very good job of depicting this tragic story. Although you have to keep in mind that this is a dramatization, and exposes Gangubai's side, it is not an objective story. I give it a 10/10, it is enjoyable, and it is very nice to observe the multifaceted sides of the Indian culture.
Tumblr media
I hope you are encouraged to watch the movies and enjoy them, they are films that deal with serious issues and in a harsh way. So if you're not in the emotional state to see it, don't force yourself to do it. Take care of your mental health.
What other movies do you recommend? Have you seen these movies before? What is your favourite thing about movies starring women?

the known heroine has come to udyati as a warning, and though it took a good deal of effort to find the young girl, whitney stands tall. hands upon her waist, nearly a disappointed mother. “you may not want to listen to me, but… be careful around ashton. you don’t know what he’s capable of.”
askbox fun // @temporarywiin (whitney english)
the bell rings and ankita pauses the movie - gangubai kathiawadi - while udyati gets up. “were you expecting anyone?” she asks her daughter, and udyati shakes her head.
when she opens the door, she’s in for the surprise of her life: whitney english is standing in the doorway. whitney freaking english! what even is her life right now?
“yaya, who’s at the door?!”
“amma, you’re never gonna believe me,” udyati calls back, “but it’s whitney english. you can continue the movie, i’ll be there in a minute!”
truthfully, udyati’s got half a mind to invite miss english in. it’s cold outside. but then she thinks of her mom, sitting in the living room, finally allowing herself to relax after everything she’s been through - after everything udyati’s put her through.
no.
she’ll step out.
the younger of the two closes the narrow hallway door and it is then and only then that she listens to whatever it is that miss english has come to tell her. she must’ve gone to great lengths. it’s not easy to find udyati. not when she doesn’t want to be found.
the blonde heroine stands tall, yes, but she almost looks like a disappointed mother, udyati thinks to herself. she would draw comparisons between miss english and her mom, but there aren’t any. not really, not quite.
she doubts that miss english would go for a chappal.
“first of all, if i didn’t want to listen to you, ma’am, i would’ve slammed the door in your face. proverbially. because doing that for real is impolite and my mom raised me better than that. secondly, you’re putting words in my mouth. you’re projecting your feelings onto me. respectfully, but why are you here, if you’re gonna lead with ‘you may not want to listen to me’? ‘cause that’s kind of a self fulfilling prophecy right there. you start with that and, yeah, i don’t want to listen, which then proves your own assumption.”
Tumblr media
“you’re right, i don’t know what ash is capable of. just like he doesn’t know what i’m capable of. just like i don’t know what you’re capable of and vice versa. but that isn’t a reason to treat him with kid gloves all of a sudden. if something’s wrong, i trust him to let me know. just like i’d let him know if something’s up with me.”
udyati runs a hand through her hair, half confused, half agitated. “so, uh, thank you, i suppose, for the warning. i appreciate it. but i’d appreciate it more if you were honest with me. playing six dimensional chess tends to get exhausting after a while.”
she’s leaning against the doorframe now, arms crossed. “are you here to tell me that ash is a threat? that he has the potential to be a threat? well, guess what, so am i. so are you. so is everyone. it’s what people do that matters. it’s their intention that matters. ash has chosen kindness. he wakes up and he chooses kindness day after day after day.”
udyati holds up a hand. she turns and vanishes down the hallway. after a couple of minutes, she comes back with a small box of indian sweets, which she then pushes into whitney’s hands.
“i do too. get home safely, miss english. oh, and happy almost new year.”

The heart-pulsate of numerous youths as of late visited Kolkata in front of the bubbly season to answer his 'otherworldly calling' prior to getting going with work in the wake of acquiring huge notoriety post his trip in the Alia Bhatt-starrer. We found Shantanu for a real to life talk where he talked about his adoration for the city, Durga Puja recollections, acting profession and that's just the beginning. Selections: You made your Bollywood debut with a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. How could it be functioning with him? Did you at any point show this? Not so much for acting, but rather eventually, I appeared about helping him in some venture. I was consistently quick to comprehend Sanjay Leela Bhansali's filmmaking cycle and, surprisingly, overall. How was the experience of imparting the screen to Alia Bhatt? It was astonishing to work with Alia. She doesn't have a brilliant demeanor, which makes her very receptive. That made me agreeable as an entertainer, and it was perfect to associate with somebody as unconstrained as me. She ensured I had the option to really convey. Have you praised her on the pregnancy? Indeed. She is set out toward a new and lovely part in her life, and I have imparted my all the best to her. How has Gangubai Kathiawadi added to your acting vocation? It has assisted individuals with grasping my true capacity as an entertainer, and I've begun treating acting more in a serious way. Prior I used to consider that perhaps I was only qualified for dance-driven films that require a digit of acting. In any case, post this film, the sort of contents individuals are moving toward me for has gotten to the next level. This alter in context has likewise happened in light of the fact that currently individuals know me as somebody who was picked by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his film. Have you had the option to deal with the prevalence that came your direction after the movie? I'm actually handling it. As of late, I was driving in Mumbai when a couple of local people halted my vehicle in the wake of remembering me as the Gangubai legend - that was really startling for me. With the well known cast that Gangubai had, getting lost was simple. Yet, I'm glad that my face and character leaving an imprint and remained with the crowd. Are there any more Bollywood or OTT projects for you in the offing? Talks are on. I have been offered a few extraordinary contents, however I'll remain hush till things are true. Could you favor doing films that permit you to exhibit your moving abilities since that is your obsession? I'm enthusiastic about moving and couldn't want anything more than to seek after it in some structure, however that isn't the main thing I need to do. We will more often than not get extremely nonexclusive when we talk about dance films, yet I know that it is so vital to get the substance right. There are various layers to move thus numerous accounts to tell. Without a trace of the right substance and a decent storyline, it will be hard for me to express yes to a dance film. You've currently chipped away at TV, OTT and Bollywood. How was one experience not the same as the other? For my purposes, it has forever been tied in with being important for great stories, regardless of the medium. In everyday cleansers, you don't have the foggiest idea when the chart will end. It is speedy however an incredible preparation ground. It is broadcast in the span of seven days, so that assists with thoughtfulness. With OTT and films, you have a period where you prep yourself, then comes execution, trailed by a significant delay until you get to see your work on screen. In this way, every one of the three require a similar measure of devotion and are similarly fun. They are just divergent concerning stretches between the different advances. You and Sourabh Jain honored the champs of Commonwealth Games 2022 during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav festivity. How could it feel to see the competitors perform so well? I like to follow sports, as it has been a tremendous motivation for me throughout everyday life. Seeing our competitors' mind boggling exhibitions, particularly in extraordinary sports was astounding. That inspires such countless adolescents to feel free to investigate the game. I'm glad that Indian competitors are getting the stage and acknowledgment they merit, alongside the right openness. When did you last were in Kolkata during Puja? Inform us regarding your Puja recollections from adolescence. It was before the pandemic. I really needed to be here during Durga Puja this year, yet I didn't know whether I would have the option to make it, so I wanted to visit now all things being equal. I came here to answer my 'profound calling' by visiting Kalighat and Bhootnath sanctuaries. Kolkata Durga Puja is something that everybody ought to encounter somewhere around once in the course of their life. My fondest Puja memory is from my school days. I recollect how we used to set out with my uncle at 3 am to keep away from top hour rush and investigate the pandals in the city. Do you observe Puja in Mumbai? Mumbai has a couple pandals and I simply bounce from one pandal to the next. I go for dandiya evenings as well Read the full article

Gangubai Kathiawadi
Tumblr media
Synopsis
Young Ganga is tricked by her boyfriend, who promised her a film career and asked her to leavd the countryside to Mumbai. Once she gets there she is thrown to the underground world.
The movie runs for 2h and 34 mins
It was directed by Sanjay Leeks Bhansali
Cast:
Gangubai Kathiawadi - Alia Bhatt
Afsan - Shantanu Maheshwari
Razibai- Vijay Razz
Karim Lala- Ajay Devgn
Kamli- Indira Tiwari
Amin Fezi- Jim Sarbh
Sheela Maazi- Seema Pahwa
Among others.
This is a drama and crime Indian movie. It has prostitution and abuse. So if it triggers something you are warned. It does have a strong scene.
I give it the story a 10/10
Spoilers
The movie begins in a brothel and with a girl that had been sold to them, her name was Madhu. She refused to be a prostitute so Madame Rashmidai tortured her. Seen that it wasn't working she callled Gangubai for help and to persuade Madhu to become a prostitute.
There you finally see Gangubai, dressed in white and beautiful. She tells this girl her story. How she was tricked by her boyfriend with a promise of a film career and how she was sold for Rs 1000. She is forced by madame Sheela to prostitute herself and she changes her name to Gangu. While she was there she befriend Kamli. She then later is asked by Sheela to take a customer and that he has already paid so Gangu has to please him, what she didn't know is that this man would beat her up for his satisfaction. After she gets put of the hospital she goes to Rahim Lala for help and so he does. When this man goes again Sheela asks Gangu to once again please this man, this time the man gets beaten by Rahim Lala.
After this Sheela dies and Gangu becomes the madame of her brothel and she changes her name to Gangubai. After Gangubai is done with her story she asks Madhu if she still wanted to stay and then gives her a choice of two candies, one is a normal candy and the other has poison. Seeing than Madhu prefers to die Gangubai takes and send her home.
After this you see how much everyone loves Gangubai, her longing of her family, how hard her life is but she always strove for better and she became a powerful women at the end.
This film is inspired by real woman named Gangubai Kathiawadi who was a "mafia queen".
It was a very beautiful piece of art. I loved every second of it. You could see and hear (through the songs) how Gangubai felt. It is very inspiring and even with all the hardship she went through she helped others. The dancing scene was very beautiful also.
For characters I give it 10/10
This is my first Indian movie and the first time watching these actors, hopefully I can see them in other movies. Alia had a powerful voice and attitude that was perfect for a mafia queen. Afsan was so lovely and I would've hope that their love would flourish. Mr.Fezi, I found that I really appreciated how he gave Gangubai's voice more potency for others to hear her and understand her. Kamli! Another beautiful character!
I give the soundtrack a 10/10
Amazing! Even when the characters are not talking, the choices of song will tell you the story or the emotion the character is going through. Simply amazing.
Fun fact!
This movie is based on a real woman, Gangubai Kathiawadi, the mafia queen.
It's the most watch Indian movie on Netflix, with 50 million viewers.

Top Rated Hindi Movies Of 2022
1. Badhaai Do
Tumblr media
In the film, newly-weds Sumi and Shardul (Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao) live like roommates. What follows Sumi and Shardul’s wedding is their journey of walking on eggshells to keep their secret from their families, friends, and neighbours, while trying to stay true to who they are. In the process, they find themselves running from one chaotic situation into another. Shardul and Sumi’s romantic interludes with their real partners play out with the kind of ease, comfort, and turbulence that we have seen between any other couple in our movies - an indication that the intention of the film is not to stereotype the gay and lesbian community but to change mindsets and eliminate prejudices against them.
2. Jhund
Tumblr media
Amitabh Bachchan drops his mannerisms and baritone to play a determined football coach who uses the beautiful game to change the lives of the slum boys
Providing a level playing field to invisible India, Nagraj Manjule’s  Jhund takes us beyond the ‘wall of social divide’ to a ghetto where life is a struggle for survival. Inspired by the story of a real-life football coach Vijay Barse, who uplifted slum children through football and launched the concept of slum soccer, Nagraj has used his lived Dalit experience to make a sensitive statement on the need to bridge the social faultlines, without applying any sugar coating.
3. Gangubai Kathiawadi
Tumblr media
It’s an Alia Bhatt show all the way, as she slips into the role of the bosslady in a world-full of brothels and lustful men. It might take a while to feel comfortable with the idea of Alia playing this part, but by the end of it, you find yourself rooting for her - especially when you watch her dish out dialogues with supreme confidence, audacity and a killer instinct. Ajay Devgan, even in a brief role as Rahim Lala, leaves a solid impact. The rest of the supporting cast like Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, and Jim Sarbh put their best foot forward but don’t have much room to shine. Shantanu Maheshwari as Gangu’s love interest puts out a fine performance, and the bitter-sweet moments between Gangu and him are among the more memorable parts of the film.
4 . Bachchhan Paandey
Tumblr media
It’s an interesting plot, but sadly we have seen it all in the trailer that pretty much reveals the entire story. ‘Bachchhan Paandey’ doesn’t deliver the goods consistently. It’s a massive setup that seems heavily inspired by the Tarantino school of filmmaking. There are sweeping slo-mo shots of the protagonist driving around in his vintage open car in dry and arid landscapes of North India and an eerily cheerful background score that ensures his dark deeds don’t evoke much fear within the audience. Then, does it evoke comedy? Well, no because barring a few jokes (as seen in the trailer) there aren’t many more to begin with. This despite a mix of of talented character artists, who are known for their impeccable comic timing. Like Sanjay Mishra, who plays the stuttering Bufferia Chacha or Pankaj Tripathi, as the tyrant acting coach Bhaves Bhoplo from Gujarat. They bring in the laughs when they deliver their punchlines, but their characters are eclipsed by so much else that’s going on in this chaotic mess. Arshad Warsi has more screen time but doesn’t ever get a chance to shine in this dark comedy.
