THE SNAKE CHARMER (1879) by JEAN-LÉON GÉRÔME
In the painting, we see a boy with a python in his arms while an old man is playing a recorder on his right. In the painting, the boy is naked except for the python, which is wrapped twice around his body and the boy holds its head high.
In the background, ten men in traditional tribal garb, carrying staffs and swords, sit on the floor in front of a stunning eastern tiled wall that glows in shades of aquamarine, aquamarine, cyan and turquoise.
Inspired by a visit to Constantinople, Arabic text can be seen along the top wall of the painting. Like most of the artist’s canvases, this one was a composite piece, made in his studio out of studies he completed abroad.
As a result, mistakes and ambiguities creep in. The tight, realistic style of Gérôme’s work creates an interesting narrative, but it has been widely criticized by modern critics. Some have called it a “sloppy imperialist view of ‘the East’”.
