Someone to You
Summary: The newest Avengers recruit feels out of place and alone after her life changes so rapidly, but she’s not as alone as she thinks. Based off of the song Someone To You by Banners.
Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x y/n, you
Warnings: None! Slight angst? Internal angst? Mostly fluff, enjoy <3
Word Count: ~1300
A/N: Reblogs, likes, and comments are VERY much appreciated, all mistakes are my own! xx (It’s late and I'm tired, there may very well be a few mistakes)
**I don’t own marvel, and if I did Natasha would still be alive**
Tumblr media
And if the sun starts setting, the sky goes cold Then if the clouds get heavy and start to fall I really need somebody to call m own I wanna be somebody to someone
The stars twinkled brightly over that New York City skyline. The streets were busy, but the air was still. It was cold- the setting sun taking away any warmth it brought as it slipped away. You were hugging your knees to your chest, chin resting on your arms. You could see the steady puffs of your breath in front of you. The fire escape wasn’t truly meant to be used as a balcony, but you found yourself out here more nights than not. Stark was throwing one of his annual parties, it was nice, if that’s your sort of thing. Dresses and button-ups instead of metal suits, champagne smiles plastered on for a single night every other month or so. Not really your cup of tea. You smiled and sipped at the glass of whatever was thrust into your hand when you walked in, but you slipped out as soon as you could. Unnoticed, like always.
Dive and disappear without a trace I just wanna be someone Well, doesn’t everyone?
Being around large groups of people made you anxious. It was too loud, too busy, too warm- you kind of wish you had some of that warmth now, though. The wind nipped at your exposed skin, the long emerald green dress left your arms and most of your neck and chest exposed. You looked out at the twinkling lights of the city before you. You heard footsteps approaching the open window before the fire escape creaked eerily loud as a body slipped next to yours and a blanket wrapped over your shoulders. You greedily huddled into its warmth. “Hey, you” you greeted, not moving from your huddled position. “Hey you, I saw you slip out. I know you usually like to be left alone out here, but I come barring gifts” Natasha lifts up a hand holding her strappy black heels and a bottle of champagne. You give a small smirk in response, but make no reach towards the bottle. The air is frigid and still around the pair of you; you can feel her eyes on your side profile and you almost squirm out of self-consciousness, but you stop yourself. There was no need to with her, really. She’s seen you at your highest and lowest moments. You fall into silence for a few minutes- you wouldn’t call it comfortable, but it wasn’t uncomfortable either. It was heavy, a million words floated between you that had yet to be spoken.
This wasn’t the first time she had followed you out onto the escape, no, the first time was a panic attack the first week you joined- she wrapped her arms firmly around you as you rode it out, whispering sweet nothings in Russian. The second time was after a particularly rough mission that left you feeling like a disappointment to the team. She wasn’t one for giving advice or pep-talks, but just having her there with you gave you a semblance of comfort. It wasn’t anything she did- it was just her. Just Nat, it was always Nat.
I’ll make the moon shine just for your view I’ll make the starlight circle the room And if you feel like night is falling I wanna be the one you’re calling ‘Cause I believe that you could lead the way
The two of you had been sitting in silence for so long her voice startled you when she broke it, “When I first joined the team, this was my fire escape.” You finally turn to face her at her comment, but she was now looking out at the skyline, champagne bottle resting in her hands as her legs dangled through the bars and over the ledge. “Not literally of course, but I was always out here. I was always on edge, it was my training. Never trust anyone, even the people closest to you. Especially the people closest to you,” Her throat seemed to catch, but she covered it by taking a swig from the bottle, her ruby red lips barely touching the rim as she leaned her head back. She looked dazzling in the moonlight. “I tried so desperately to shut the rest of them out, but they continued to push against me. Continued to prove to me again and again that I could trust them. I never had that before- someone to rely on. Someone to call family, somewhere to call home. But I found that here.” She finally turns to meet your eyes, glazed over with ghosts of the past and other emotions threatening to spill over the surface. “I was constantly ready to run. I was nobody before this- I was only the assassin they made me to be in the Red Room. But here I am,” She gave a sad, small smile and you tried to meet it but you still didn’t understand why she was telling you all this- “I see the way you are, Y/N. I see a lot of myself in you. You always look ready to run, ready to disappear without a goodbye. You have this look- this look of longing for something more, you feel like you’re nothing, like you have nothing, I know that look because I’ve been there too,” She reaches to intertwine your frigid hands and you let out a slight gasp of breath. “I know your deal with Fury is that you can leave at any time, no strings attached. But if you stay… I think you’ll find that you are somebody. Somebody to this team.. somebody to a certain fiery red-haired assassin.. But don’t tell her I said anything, she’ll kill me if you do” she winked and you both let out a chuckle that left the cold air around you cloudy with warm breath. “You can find your home here, I know you can, but you just have to give us a chance- give us some trust.” She gave your hand a squeeze with the final words. Her eyes are locked on yours, hands still intertwined and you realize she’s nervous to be saying this. This was the first time you had ever seen your teammate be so vulnerable, and you felt a million emotions swell inside of you at once. “Natasha, I-“ “You don’t have to decide right now.” She interrupted, “But just, consider it. You can open yourself up, allow yourself to be vulnerable, and be someone to this team. Or you can leave, you can keep searching for that missing feeling inside of you, but I have a feeling if you keep searching for the road home- you’ll find someday down the line that you were on it all along.” Her voice was barely a whisper, but her face and body were close enough to you that you could hear it over the city nightlife. A million things were swirling in your head that you wanted to say, tears threatening to prick at the corner of your eyes, but your voice caught in your throat. You couldn’t say anything- so you acted. You slowly lean in and press a chaste kiss to her soft lips, the hand that wasn’t intertwined with her own coming to rest on her cold cheek. It was over as soon as it started, sweet and short, but it shared all the words you couldn’t say on your own. “I’ll stick around for a while” you whisper, head against her forehead, nose brushing nose, before leaning your head on her shoulder and looking back out into the night, a small smile on your face- a flicker of hope before you that you hadn’t seen in a long time. She made no move to get closer, only leaned her head against your own and looked out into the night with you, looked out into the future of what was to become of the team and the two of you.

marvel preferences || 1/?
this is the first of many preferences I will start writing over time. if you have any preference requests, send them in via my inbox! i’m not writing full fics for anyone right now but I would love to take requests for preferences! check my masterlist for lists of fandoms/characters. happy reading!
DO NOT REPOST.
p.s. loki’s will probably always be the longest. he’s my comfort character and precious soul who deserves the MOST.
if gifs not sourced, they were found on google, lmk if they’re yours!
(more below the cut-off)
what made them fall in love with you
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers
Your smile. Steve never thought he could find comfort in another person after he woke up in a brand new world. He had lost everyone he had ever known and everything he had been familiar with all of his life. But there was something in your smile that took him right back to 1942, to rich blackberry pie in his mother’s icebox, to the melodies that would play over the static of his old radio, and the alluring feeling of being at home again. He thrived off of your smile - so much so that he could scarcely go a day without seeing it.
Tumblr media
Tony Stark
Your sass. Tony thought Pepper was the only one who could keep up with the quick-witted nonsense that rolled of his tongue until you came onto the scene. You were not only just as sharp as he was and kept pace with his attitudes and references, but totally ruthless in your quips which even left him speechless on occasion. Life was never dull around you and he didn’t feel like he needed to try and sensor his remarks or his frequent rudeness - he knew you could understand the reason or the emotion behind it and often even find his sense of humor in all of it. When he had seen you roll your eyes for the first time mid-conversation, Tony knew he was in too deep - especially when he realized your reaction was aimed at Steve.
Tumblr media
Clint Barton
Your sense of humor. To anyone who really knew the famed archer, it was basic knowledge to know that Clint had an affinity for a good sense of humor - believing himself to have one of the best. When he had gotten to know you a little better, he was ecstatic to finally have someone to joke around with and not have to worry about poor timing or moody reactions. You were always willing to have a laugh, especially in the midst of a serious or daunting situation. You had your share of dad jokes, cheesy puns, borderline offensive nicknames for everyone on the team, and so many other quips that Clint thrived off of. He found himself eager to be around you whenever he could, ready to bounce his latest joke off of you and just enjoy your company.
Tumblr media
Natasha Romanoff
Your leadership skills. Natasha had saught a sense of security all of her life, especially since she had turned her life around and joined S.H.I.E.L.D.’s forces. When you later joined the team, you were able to bring each Avenger together and help them through their many differences - even Tony and Steve. Even out in the chaos of a mission, you had the ability to wrangle the team and find a way through every unforeseen situation. You had established a strong definition of unity for the team, determined to keep everyone together, and she loved you for that.
Tumblr media
Bruce Banner
Your intelligence. Bruce loved the fact that he could carry on an intellectual conversation with someone who could keep up with him when he was in his zone. Whether it was science, technology, or just the elaborate store of vocabulary you kept under your belt, he adored every bit of it. You didn’t even need to know all that much about his field of work to seem genuinely interested in his passions and he loved entertaining your interests as well.
Tumblr media
Peter Parker
Your nerdiness. Peter couldn’t believe he had met a girl who was just as obsessed with Star Wars as he was. Sure, he wasn’t ignorant to the fact that girls could be nerds, but he had just never met one in person - at least not one as full of so many amazing qualities as you were. You were kind, funny, sharp-minded, and totally enthralled with anything to do with your fandoms, and never missed a beat when he used one of his many fandom-related references in day-to-day conversation. Not to mention you were downright beautiful. He enjoys nothing more than the hours he spends with you and Ned talking about movies, comics, and music, and especially the times you help them build their limited edition LEGO sets without a hint of judgement. You were something special.
Tumblr media
Scott
Your laugh. Scott couldn’t get enough of it. Since the first moment he had heard your real laughter, unkempt and wild, he had been finding ways to bring it out of you - which he succeeded at more times than not. There was something about the way that expression of joy left you breathless for air with little crinkles at the corners of your sparkling eyes. It was adorable. Being able to have that effect on you was one of the few things he could truly take pride in, and he would happily spend the rest of his life doing just that.
Tumblr media
Heimdall
Your eyes. He is always careful to study a person’s eyes upon meeting them, knowing them to be the window to a person’s very soul; their innate being. When he looked into yours, he saw a mix starlight and wonderment. He could see from the very start that you had an honest soul - you sought no ill will upon anyone around you. You were good, passionate, and pure. You had captivated him with just a single glance and he found himself relentlessly drawn to you.
Tumblr media
Loki
The way you speak to him. Loki had spent a lifetime surrounded by voices fueled with negativity and condescension, apart from the voice of his mother. He had been the brunt of cruel jokes from the Warriors Three, blamed for his brother’s numerous misgivings as children, and forced to accept Odin’s distaste for him. When you came along, he had expected no different from you - but you proved him wrong. You spoke to him in a way no one, save his beloved mother, had ever spoken to him.
You regarded him with respect as a noble, which most people had try to strip from him all of his life. Your kindness, which overflowed in abundance around him, warmed his soul with pleasure. Your tone was never anything less than sincere. Even when you grew frustrated with him, you were mindful to respect his triggers and could express your anger truthfully in love, without malice or hatred. When you laughed, you laughed with him, and not at him. Your compliments and endless affirmations of his worth gave him a since of residual positivity about himself. He found himself eager to see you and speak with you - he knew you would never dismiss him or abandon him. Because of you, he had begun to like himself as he was, not for what anyone told him he could never be.
Tumblr media
Thor
Your compassion. Thor had known a great many people in his lifetime, noble and ordinary, and had yet to meet anyone with a heart as big as yours. You had seen him as more than just a stuck-up prince from the very beginning and had helped him see past himself and shed his arrogant scales. You never asked for anything more than simple kindess and in return, you gave your heart so fully to every cause. In many ways, you had taught him how to see with his heart and not so much his power or his royalty. You’d shown him how to see through the eyes of his people, and not just as their ruler. He wishes he could be as compassionate and selfess as you are.
Tumblr media
Brunnhilde
Your combat skills. To say Valkyrie was impressed the day you slayed three Sakaar Imperials with one clean swing of your blade was an understatement. They had been looming in the distance, their weapons aimed for her head, as she fought of a hoard of junk hunters. The imperials had been out for her for a few weeks, ever since she had gained the special favor of the Grandmaster for her delivery of new gladiators or scum. Your swift decision to aide her saved her life. She hadn’t trusted the sword of anyone other than herself since the massacre of her fellow Valkyrie until she met you. She admired your skill and determined demeanor in a fight, as well as your ability to sense a sour situation. You had grown on her.
Tumblr media
Peter Quill
Your taste in music. Peter wasn’t used to having a receptive audience when it came to sharing his mix tapes with the Guardians. It took several weeks - for Drax, it took months - for them to begin to appreciate the songs he blasted through the sound system of the Milano. When you arrived on the scene, he was more than ecstatic to find your Zune hidden away in your things after Rocket, who had yet to trust you, had convinced him to search your bags for any incriminating evidence. It was loaded with many of the same songs he had spent his life memorizing and dancing to. From then on, after you got over the snooping through your things in secret, you and Peter would share your music. Whether it be oldies, new discoveries, or absurd alien songs that came through the radio frequencies, Peter couldn’t be happier to finally have someone who understood the power of music the way he did.

Fili x Reader: Stranger
Author’s Note:  To the peeps who follow me for my Hobbit/LOTR stories, thank you for being patient!  After all that Star Wars stuff, I finally got some more Hobbit fanfics going here!  Not to toot my own horn, but I had a lot of fun with this idea.
This is set after Battle of the Five Armies where Fili, Thorin, and Kili all made it out and are rebuilding Erebor (the ending I’ve basically accepted instead of the one in the movies :D ).  I hope it is to your liking!
(ALSO please excuse my sorry excuses for Middle Earth names I put in here... I sort of invented them at work. You’ll know them when you see them :I )

Tumblr media
    It was springtime in Dale, and everything was in full bloom.  The city had made an excellent recovery since the people of Lake-Town had made it their home again.
   Your relatives had been survivors of Lake-Town’s desolation and even had been successful enough to open a shop in the new city.  With the citizens of Erebor back in the mountain opening up trade again, Dale became a place of plenty.  It was because of this your relatives had sent word to your family offering a job and place to stay for any who desired a new start.  Your parents thought it would be a good experience for a young woman like you.  You’d learn the ins and outs of a successful business and also be of help to your relatives who needed the extra help as more customers came in.  Not to mention it would be an entirely new place with new people to meet.  You had been eager to travel a bit and see a little more of the world outside your little town.
   Your relatives were fairly distant, but you just called them Aunt Mirrim and Uncle Rhain.  They had two daughters that you referred to as your cousins.  Lilly and Gwennifer were sweet little girls, but also mischievous.  It wasn’t uncommon for them to play jokes on you or ask you repeatedly about your love life, to which you insisted you had none.  They just liked to hear your exasperated sigh, for reasons unknown to you.
   The days were busy with plenty for you to do in and out of the shop since Dale was still in the process of rebuilding in some areas.  You had even caught glimpses of the short and stocky  citizens of Erebor that came down from the mountain to trade or purchase goods.  Some were gruff, hesitant to trust your people since there had been a battle over gold merely months before.  Most were relatively friendly, however.  The women were generally more friendly towards you.  Your family sold clothes and accessories among other things, and even though the females had superior items made in Erebor, they expressed curiosity about the fashion and goods your people produced.  Once in a while you’d get questions or compliments from them.
   Today in particular was a beautiful day.  The air was warm and fresh, and yellow sunlight shone down from a clear blue sky.  Some trees had started to bud while others bloomed flowers.  You stood outside admiring the way white petals fell from a small tree in front of your aunt and uncle’s shop.  A spring breeze carried them gently to the stone walkway where they lay scattered.
   Uncle Rhain poked his head out the front door.  “______________, would you be so kind as to help me raise the banner?”
   You nodded, taking the cloth banner from him  “Of course!”   The banner was a way for customers to know when the shop was open.  You paused, waiting for your uncle to take the other rope and help you raise it, but he had disappeared back inside.  “Oh, well, I suppose I’ll do it myself.  Shouldn’t be too much trouble!”  Normally he helped because the pulley could be tricky, but perhaps he forgot.  Rather than bother him, you figured you’d try to raise it yourself.  You unfolded the banner, hooked it onto the rope, and began to hoist it up.  It got stuck a few times, but fortunately, you seemed to be able to handle it.
   Then a gust of wind blasted through.
   It pulled the banner swiftly, dragging you forward as you grappled with securing the rope.  A few passersby watch with concern.  You were sure you looked silly.  Another strong gust of wind attempted to pry the banner from your hands, and you gasped as it tugged on your limbs.
   A set of masculine hands grabbed the rope in your peripheral.  He -whoever it was- pulled the entire banner straight up to its rightful place at the top front of the store.  You quickly tied it down and exhaled in relief, brushing hair from your face.
   “I can’t thank you enough,” you told your rescuer, turning to face him.  He was clearly from Erebor, much shorter than the average man and of stocky build.  For someone to have been able to raise that banner as quickly as he did alone, he must have been very strong.  He had a long blonde mane and beard with blue eyes that shone in amusement as he smiled at you.
   “No worries,” he assured you.  “What are you doing out here wrestling with this thing all by yourself?”
   “I, um,” you were a little stunned.  He was quite handsome, after all.  “My uncle usually helps, but I think he got a little distracted.  It’s very busy around here.”
   “I’m sure.  It’s been a period of rebuilding for all of us.”
   You nodded.  “Yes, it has.”
   “My name is Fili,” he introduced, extending a hand.
   “I’m ___________.”  You took his hand briefly in greeting, marveling at how warm and strong it was.
   He gazed at you as if searching for something.  For a minute, you weren’t sure what to say.  Finally, he spoke again.
   “You’re not from Lake-Town, are you?”
   “Oh, no I’m not.” You shook your head.  “My relatives are.  After Smaug was defeated, they opened up this shop.  Since things are going so well, they invited me to come work for them a few weeks ago.”
   “I thought so.  See, I went to Lake-Town when Smaug paid his...visit… And I don’t recall seeing you.  I’m sure I would’ve remembered you if I had.”
   You fought the warmth that crept into your cheeks at his words.  “I’m sure you say that to all the young ladies you meet here.”
   “Definitely not,” Fili chuckled.  “This has been my first time here since the Battle.  I’ve heard good things about the progress your people are making here, and I was curious.  I wanted to see for myself.”
   “And what do you think?  Now that you’ve seen it?”
   “I think…” he narrowed his eyes in thought for a moment.  “I think I like it.”
   You smiled.  “Well, I’m honored to have been part of your first visit to Dale since it was a pile of ruins.”
   “I’m honored that you’re honored.”
   The conversation ebbed into a mutual silence, though neither of you seemed bothered by it.  Things changed when another shorter man with long hair, though lacking in a full beard, approached.
   “Fili, we need to get our things and get back, or Thorin would be much displeased.”  He took notice of you and smiled.  “Well hello there.  Are you a friend of my brother’s?”
   “We only just met,” Fili replied, rolling his eyes, before looking at you again.  “This is my brother, Kili.”
   “Pleased to meet you,” you said, smiling.
   “Not as pleased as I to meet you.”
   Fili rolled his eyes again.  “Well, I must be going...  Although, I wanted to ask,  what sort of things do you sell?”
   “Dresses and accessories as well as traveling gear.”
   He nodded.  “Traveling gear? Very interesting... I think I’ll have to stop by.  Mind if I come by tomorrow at the same time?  Perhaps I can help you with the banner again.”
   You beamed.  “Of course.  I’ll see you tomorrow then?”
   “Yes, see you tomorrow.”
    “Have a good rest of your day,” Kili chimed in.
   “You too!”
   Even as Fili and his brother walked away, he snuck a glance or two back at you.  In fact, he almost walked right into another gentleman’s way since he wasn’t paying attention like he should.  After he was gone, you found yourself unable to stop smiling.  You went back inside the shop thinking over your interaction with him.  A part of you was surprised and uncomfortable with the fact you found him so attractive and couldn’t wait to see him again.  After all, you were from two totally different cultures.
   “You look so deep in thought, __________.” Aunt Mirrim’s comment interrupted your thoughts.  “Is everything alright?”
   “Oh yes, everything’s fine.”  You quickly resumed organizing some of the items that had been misplaced by customers the day before.  “I just wanted to let you know we will be expecting a customer right when we open tomorrow.”
   She grinned.  “Very well!  Might I say that we really appreciate your help, dear.  We’ve noticed more customers since you came along to encourage people and help them find what they need.”
   “I appreciate this opportunity,” you insisted.  She walked past to continue her work, and your thoughts returned to the mysterious Fili.  What was his job in Erebor?  Was he a blacksmith or tailor?  Perhaps he was some sort of writer or educator?  You figured you’d ask him the next day.  Either way, you counted the minutes until your paths crossed again.

Unforeseen Chasm (Part 70)
Prompt: Two sisters fall for men that are absolute enemies. The love they have could tear all of them apart, or it could bring them together.
Word Count:2610
Warnings:Wedding day! fluff, Banner babies, emotional day, heart to heart, fluff all around,  Song for this part: I Love you Always Forever - Betty Who Note: This is by far the longest thing I’ve ever written (including my novels). It’s a collaboration with the amazing @mrs-dragneel-stark-solo. It started as a funny “What if…?” and it evolved and got huge. This took two years to write. We are both proud and happy and we hope you enjoy it. It follows from Thor 1 to Endgame in the MCU. Some of the timelines may be off in order to fit certain people, and some characters may show up earlier or in different ways than they have in the movie. But for the most part, it follows the MCU. It also has a bit of crossover with some other Marvel characters throughout the story.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Do we have everything?” you asked, nervousness alive in your voice.
“Yes, for the last time, Y/N, everything is perfect,” Shannon replied.
You were looking in the mirror, clad in your gorgeous veil, stunning dress, and breathtaking shoes. Shannon stood to your left, just behind you, her baby bump gone. She had a healthy boy and girl just a few weeks ago. You specifically planned the wedding so that she could be all healed in order to stand with you.
“Well that’s everything, Y/N.” She did minor fixes to your hair and the veil. “Aww, my sister off to get married. Oh gosh I said I wouldn’t cry but here come the waterworks.” She sniffled. “You have no idea how happy I am for you right now.”
“Aww. Thank you, Shannon. I had no idea you’d get this choked up over me marrying Loki.”
“I just want you to know that no matter where this new chapter takes you, I’m always going to be there for you.” She smiled and fixed her makeup. “Now have you decided on taking the offer that Tony gave you about building a home on our land or if you have chosen a specific place in mind to help you guys get it built?”
“Actually,” you responded, “I think Loki and I are gonna try it out here, on New Asgard. I’d like to get to know the community better, for real, you know? I really appreciate the offer. Maybe a little after the honeymoon?”
“Yeah of course.  You let us know when you’re ready after the honeymoon.” She held your hands. “I’m getting choked up because you're finally getting your happily ever after that you so deserve.” She teared up again.
You laughed. “You’re crying more than I am,” you teased. You pulled her into a tight hug. “I love you and I don’t know what I did to deserve a sister like you but I wish I knew. You are the biggest and best gift and miracle to my life that I’ve ever gotten.”
“Okay no more crying I swear,” she laughed. “I love you so much, Y/N. We’ve come so far from where we were twelve years ago and through it all we did it together. I know your parents would be so proud of you.”
For the first time today, tears sprang to your eyes. “Damn it, Shan, your crying is contagious.” You laughed through the tears, trying to delicately wipe your eyes without smudging your makeup. “I hope they’re proud. I wish I knew them, or knew how any of my life turned out.”
“I’m sure they know how it’s been and are more than proud.” She helped you with your makeup. “Well, it’s time,” she announced as she glanced to the clock on the wall. “We’ll see you out there, okay?”
You nodded, taking a deep breath.
Here we go.
Shannon picked up her bouquet and left the room gracefully. In swept Tom and Clint, who both approached you with a grin.
“Hey, kid. Congratulations,” Clint said sweetly as he approached.
“Thank you,” you said lightly.
“You ready?” Tom asked.
“I’ve never been more ready for anything,” you breathed.
You put your arm through each of theirs as they offered, and the doors to the little suite opened.
When they did, perfect rays of sunshine and warmth flooded around you. Shannon was working a little to make sure the air wasn’t too cold, or the clouds didn’t threaten to rain, to make your day perfect. The sand on the beach was warm and inviting.
You were on the shores of New Asagard, a beautiful island with amazing beaches. It was an easy choice for you and Loki when you saw it.
The quartet played the Asgardian lullaby that Frigga had sung to you all as children for the bridal party to walk down the aisle. As you approached, Strange put a spell on you that would hide you from everyone’s view. Meanwhile a stunning white french doorway stood where the bridal party couldn’t be seen until it was time.
Wanda and Tony stepped forward from opposite sides of the aisle, linked arms, and walked down the aisle to the tune. Followed by Shannon and Thor. Once the bridal party was situated on the “altar”, Peter walked down the aisle with the ring pillow. It was emerald and gold for Loki. Just behind him, Morgan skipped down the aisle throwing orchid petals, until finally -- the wedding march began playing.
A few small steps up to the entry of the archway, and you, Clint, and Tom were ready to walk down. Stephen lifted the spell, and as everyone stood, they gasped in awe.
Your eyes hit Loki in his all black tuxedo and you weren’t sure whether to weep at his beauty and the beauty of the moment, or to run headlong down the aisle into his arms. He stared at you as if he was seeing an angel for the first time. Thor gave him a pat on the shoulder as Shannon shot you two thumbs up and a big grin.
As you moved forward down the aisle, you gave a smile of love to the face of every friend and family that you passed, but all Loki could look at was you.
Finally, you reached him, your breath halting at his stunning gorgeousness.
How had you gotten so lucky?
The preacher asked who gave you away, and Clint and Tom both gave short answers. Clint patted your shoulder as Tom kissed your cheek. Tom went to sit beside Diane, and Clint went to the second row with his family.
You took Loki’s hands and you felt a sense of life flow through you once more. Loki stared at you.
“I love you,” you mouthed and he smiled at you.
You were trying to listen to the preacher, but honestly, you just wanted this man as your husband as quickly as possible. He finally got to the point of the vows and you gave a smile before starting yours.
“Loki, I’ve loved you for all of my life. My life, our lives, have been anything but conventional. I spent most of my life wishing I had a home, some place I belonged. I always felt out of step with this world. So when I went back to Asgard, I thought that I’d found my home, that's where I found my strength and belonging, but it was never Asgard - it was you. Wherever you are, you’re my home. I know what it’s like to live without you, twice, and I don’t ever want to do it again. You’re my world, you’re my partner, your my life, you’re my home, you’re my everything. I’ve been through Hell and back just to find you, but I’d do it all again, a million times if I had to, if it meant you came back to me.”
When you finished, you could hear a few sniffles and saw some people wiping their eyes.
Loki gave you a small, sweet smile, the one he reserved for being coy and loving. He began his vows after the preacher prompted him with a small gesture.
“Y/N, we’ve fought battles and wars together. We endured torture to protect each other. You selflessly jumped off a perfectly good bridge, just to be with me. You’ve seen me at my very worst times and never looked away. You loved me, embraced me, and supported me through every hellish thing we had to endure. Thank you for never giving up on me.  When you fell into the abyss with me, not knowing what would happen, you said, ‘I need you in my life more than you may know. I’ll go wherever you are’ and I have the same sentiments, my dear. When you first arrived at Asgard, some of your first words to me were that we would navigate our pasts together, and I feel we’ve done that exceptionally well, yet, now I can’t wait to explore our futures together. I love you more than I ever thought was possible to love another person, but for once in my life, I was wrong.” He shot you a grin and you couldn’t help but laugh as happy tears streaked down your face.
After the vows, the preacher announced the exchanging of the rings, then he said, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
Loki eagerly grabbed you, his slender fingers running through your styled hair as he pulled you close. You wrapped your arms around him, gripping him tight. In seconds, cheers and whistles erupted from the crowd.
The two of you eventually let go of each other before you turned and faced everyone.
“Everyone, I am pleased to present, Loki Odinson and Y/N Odinson!” the preacher called happily and everyone jumped up, shouting, cheering, hooray-ing.
You two walked down the aisle as the photographers took several pictures before leading you to the area to get the portraits taken. Moments later, the bridal party was there to join you. After an hour of photos, you joined your guests at a quant area you’d had set up on the beach. The sun was still over the horizon, giving you plenty of time with everyone.
There was a dancefloor put in, with the dining tables surrounding it, as fantastic food was being served. The band announced your arrival with Loki, and said you’d be doing your first dance now.
The two of you danced to a song you’d heard on one of your dates. Then Tony, Bruce, Shannon, and several others joined you on the dancefloor. All of you danced for several hours. You shared a dance with several men you cared for, some of them were Clint Thor, Tom, Stephen, Tony, and Steve. Remy even cut in at one point, causing you to feel a mingling of happiness, relief, and guilt. He assured you he was having a good time, that you looked the most beautiful he’d ever seen, and he was happy to see you happy.
Thor and Shannon gave speeches, prompting both laughter and happy tears to go throughout the audience. Eventually, you threw your bouquet, to which Jean Grey caught it.
Tony walked up to you two. “Hey Y/N, I’m gonna steal your groom for a moment if you don’t mind?” Tony smiled sweetly at you. “I promise he’ll be back shortly”
“Bring him back in one piece, Tony,” you requested.
“Like I would harm a hair on my new brother-in-law’s head.” He winked.
The two men walked away to a quiet spot that overlooks the water and stood in silence before Tony spoke.
“Listen, Reindeer Gam--Loki, I just wanted us to start new,” he paused. “Like water under the bridge and to welcome you with open arms to this family.”
He made a face of suspicion. “I would actually like that. I appreciate it. I know how much Y/N loves Shannon and you, and I know it’d be easier on all of us if you and I could… Well, let the past stay in the past.”
“Yeah I think that would be best, especially with the kids who love you guys to death already.” He smiled, thinking of his two kids. “I’m not sure if Y/N’s told you this but I made a promise to her that I would do whatever it took to bring you back, She’s really important to Shannon and I know just now important you are to Y/N.” He pats Loki’s shoulder. “And believe me when I say this, it’s good to have you back man.”
“It’s extremely good to be back. You’ve raised some exceptional children. I look forward to getting to know them. Thank you for helping to get me back and keeping an eye on Y/N for me. I think I’ve had you pegged wrong for quite some time.” He patted Tony’s back. “By the way, I never got a chance to say I’m sorry about New York. Brainwashing and all that. It was never personal, you know that, right?”
“To be fair neither of us knew what the outcome would be for that, I never took it against you.” He looked over at his Brother-in-law. “Yeah people tend to do that often they think there isn't much else to me besides billionaire playboy genius, I would do anything for the ones I love much like you have.”
“Could’ve fooled me with the not taking it against me, seeing as you had me housed in your basement for two years,” Loki joked with a half grin.
Tony laughed remembering that. “It would’ve gone way worse if Shannon hadn't stepped in for you two. Those two years would have been in complete darkness away from Y/N’s side.” He got serious. “I know how much that would have affected you both.” He sighed.
Loki nodded. “You and Shannon are both… very kind people, and I am truly blessed to know you both and call you family. Thank you, for everything you’ve both done for me and Y/N, despite our pasts. I’m not sure how I’ll ever repay you.”
“No matter how bad things get for someone and whatever they had done it doesn’t change the fact that family is family. I’ve come to learn that myself through my life and we love you guys too”
The moment got interrupted when Peter ran up to his uncle, showing him some sparklers.
“Uncle Loki, look! I’m Doctor Strange!” He flailed his arms around.
Loki absolutely lost his mind seeing his nephew imitate the other man. He pulled out his phone, recording the boy and sent it to his former employer with a simple caption: “This is you”.Strange immediately received the message and just shook his head and continued to enjoy the festivity.
Tony knew in that moment that his son and his Uncle would get along great and would likely cause mischief together. Things were turning out better than he had imagined, never did the Tony Stark think he’d get married let alone settle down somewhere and have a family with the chaos that is his life. Even after everything that’s happened this was the least he deserved for risking his life to save everyone else.
Just before you and Loki were going to be sent off, Thor pulled you two aside, away from the partying. The three of you walked down the shore for a moment, before Thor finally said why he’d pulled you two aside.
“I have a wedding present for you, but I can’t give it to you just yet. You’ll have to wait until you get back from your honeymoon.”
“Mysterious,” you mused. “Have you taken a page from Loki’s book?” you teased, nudging Thor with your shoulder.
“Perhaps I have.”
“Thank you, Thor. I’m sure whatever it is, is most kind,” Loki sweetly said.
“It is, brother, thank you for noticing,” Thor replied and you rolled your eyes before linking arms with them to walk a little more.
Eventually, you three returned from your stroll, and at the end of the night the two of you were being sent off. Some people threw flower petals, others lit sparklers, the sorcerers you invited cast magical sparks your way. You and Loki ran under the send off, straight into a car that Tony had rented for the two of you.
You rolled down the window, blew a kiss to everyone, thanked them for coming, told them you loved having them there, then that was it. The car was in motion.
Off you went, on your honeymoon.
Welcome to Aparecium, Maia! You have been accepted for Rose Weasley. Competition for a character is always difficult, but we appreciated the detail and nuance you included. As we briefly discussed when you submitted the app, we’ll need a more traditionally formatted bio for her character page, but welcome aboard. Check out the new member checklist, and jump right in.
Character Basics
Birthday (Age): December 22nd (21) Gender (Pronouns): Female (she her) Sexuality: Heterosexual Blood Status: Halfblood. Hogwarts House/School: Ravenclaw Occupation: Cursebreaker trainee Faceclaim: Erin Kellyman
Any requested changes? I picked a different face only because the ones listed weren’t calling out to me as much and I recently fell in love with both these girls!
Biography:
* WHAT ARE YOU LIKE ?
INTELLIGENT
“God. Does everyone have to point it out? Yes, I’m smart. Yes, just like my mum. Good Lord. I know already. I got the best marks in my year. I scored O’s on most of my OWLs and the one I didn’t get an O on was an E. Please, can we not mention it anymore. Mum gifted me with her incredible power of mind. Etc… Etc… It’s not that I mind having the brain power really, it’s that everyone expects me to be just like my mum, and no matter how much I love her, I’ll never actually be her. That aside, a battle of wits with me is probably a bad idea. Not many people can best me. That might sound full of myself, but I assure you, it’s completely true.”
SWEET
“Dad says it’s what he gets for naming me after a silly flower. That because of it I turned out as sweet as it’s scent. I guess someone in the family had to do it. Mum can be a little abrasive, dad a bit, well, air-headed. Hugo’s just his owe breed. I guess I just had to be the normal one? I’m the type that’ll get all dewy eyed over a lost kitten and probably end up taking it home with me. It used to really drive Mum batty. I just like to have kindness and compassion. I can’t stand to see people or animals hurting. I just want to give the world a big hug from time to time. A smile is the best thing you can give a person, in my opinion.”
FREE SPIRITED
“I like my flights of fancy, and that’s that. I don’t feel much of a need to follow society’s main stream. People can be ridiculously like lemmings at times and that just doesn’t fit me. I like to think for myself, discover my own path. It’s probably the thing that set me the most apart from the people I grew up around, especially in the last few years. I never had that driving need to fit in. If I wanted to compete, I competed. If I wanted to be a lazy bum, I lazed. It’s kind of just the way I am. I might go along with my friends or my family in their ventures but it doesn’t mean I won’t go my own way when I fell it’s might be a better option.”
ROMANTIC
“Stupid books. They gave me illusions of grandeur, I swear. I love them so very much, which is a different story but it lead me to this silly idea called romance. I read too many love stories when I was younger and now, no matter how improbable it really is I have this stupid hope in the back of my head that I’ll find some adoring White Knight that wants to sweep me off my feet. Not going to happen, I know. Ruined a good thing hoping for it, I know. You don’t have to tell me. But I just can’t help that little voice inside that wants it to be possible. My cousins and my brother all loved to take the mickey out of me about it. It gets bloody annoying sometimes. I guess I brought it on myself though. It doesn’t help when dashing, good looking young men like Scorpius Malfoy factor into the picture either. I suppose it was an inevitable failure on my part.”
SOCIABLE/FRIENDLY
“Surprisingly enough, though my dad did his best to make me a competitive twit, ha ha, I’ve turned out to be pretty darn friendly. I like to surround myself with different sorts of people. That’s probably how I got to know people like Scorpius, who dad was all set to make my arch enemy. In school I had friends from every house. We’d throw big parties in the old Shack and I’d be the life of the party. I’m not really sure where this particular skill came from. Maybe my dear Uncle George, who is amazingly cool, and my departed Uncle Fred, who I wish I could have met. The stories about them were still fresh legends of Hogwarts when I started school. Everyone liked them, so maybe that’s where it comes from.”
EMOTIONAL
“Yet another reminder of my similarities to my mum. I can get all worked up over the strangest things. I can go from scarily angry to completely teary eyed in the blink of an eye. I can hold a grudge with an outright vengeance… for about a week. (Dad says Mum used to do that to him as well.) It’s just the way I naturally express myself. I’ve sort of got my hear out on my sleeve. I wear my feelings pretty openly and I’ll let you know how you’ve made me feel.”
BOOKWORM
“I think I mentioned it earlier but I have the damnedest fascination with books. I just read like there won’t ever be another book published. It goes hand in hand with my overactive imagination. I can read a book and picture the whole thing in my head, just like a movie. I can make myself the star if I want to. It’s probably what got me into the whole ‘hopeless romantic’ mess with you-know-who. I just get so carried away with the stories that leap off the page that I can be consumed for hours and be totally happy with that.”
* SO HOW DID YOU GET TO BE HERE ?
“I come from the best parents you could ask for. Sure, my mum can be a little taxing at times, she’s Hermione after all, and my dad can be a bit of a goof. But the things you hear about in the stories are true. They’re good, loyal, amazing people who just happen to have fallen in love in the aftermath of a world on the brink of war and had two very silly children. It sounds like a fairytale doesn’t it? You ever wonder what comes after the happily ever after? Me and Hugo, that’s what.
My parents named me Rose because mom had a thing for the smell of them when she was pregnant with me. She thought it was clever I guess. They gave me my Aunt Ginny’s name for a middle name and I love it. She’s a tops lady and I’m glad to share the name with her. I can’t say my name was super creative but I don’t complain about it either. I think it’s classy and timeless which are both very positive traits.
They had me first, thank God, because as much as I love my little brother I am glad he’s my little brother. We are close, as brothers and sister are wont to be. But I am pretty close with all my family. Anyways, we grew up with means enough to have all of what we needed and a lot of what we wanted. The benefit of having famous parents I suppose. Mum and Dad indulged us quite a bit, but they never let us get spoiled to the point of being brats. We spent tons of time with the family. I have too many cousins to count and I love them all, but especially Roxanne. I think it’s because we were both so much our own people that we bonded. I was and am also very close to Albus, who was always my best friend when Roxanne was too busy being independent to play. Albus and I would play together for hours, making up stories and pretending to me our heroic parents. We look back on it now and laugh. We wonder if we’ll be in the history books someday, considering the direction the wizarding world is carrying on it now. This change to magical technology is fascinating but a bit terrfying and I often find myself wondering when it’ll blow up in our faces, figuratively or literally.
Al and I started school the same year. I think he was relieved to go together. I had no fear at all. I came prepared of course, being my mother’s child. I remember looking around the platform and marveling at the number of people that could be going off to just one school. Dad pointed out the Malfoys and Scorpius, who I was to beat at every test, or so dad admonished. Mum told him not to pit us against one another so soon. Diplomatic? Mum? Apparently so. We got on the train like everyone else and started out new life. I spent the train ride reminding Al of all the good things we’d experience at school. We were part of a legacy after all and I was very proud to carry that banner. It worked out alright, for the most part. The three of us were best of friends until I decided to date Scorpius and it all went a bit… well it’s not great.
I did well all thought school. I got Mum’s brains after all. I really did beat Scorpius in tests sometimes, just like dad wanted, but I also made a friend out of him. He’s actually very charming, thought I suppose I’m not supposed to think about im that way anymore. I’m living my own life now, bad decision and all. He certainly isnt’ not the only friend I’ve ever made, you know. I had a good sized group of close knit friends from all the houses back in school. We’d sneak out and throw little parties in the Shrieking Shack sometimes. It was the best of times. Then we grew up and moved away and soem of us stay in touch. Some of them are even in the trainee program with me, so that’s beeen nice though we’re nearly done there, as well. Hopefully we’ll all stay friendly. I need my own friends now, since both my closest mates probably hate me by now.
* WHAT WOULD WE FIND IN YOUR TRUNKRIGHT NOW ?
Honestly? Probably a mess. Whatever I didn’t need got left in it all jumbled up. Most of my clothes and such are in the wardrobe where they belong and my school things are in my night stand. the trunk is probably holding a multitude of things that are unimportant. Classic muggle cds, a few daydream charms from Uncle George’s shop, that Skiving Snackbox that Roxy gave me last year. Who really knows. It’s probably a downright motley collection. I think there’s that pretty amulet that Lorcan and Lysander gave me this Christmas past. I doubt you’d find anything interesting. All the juicy secrets are hidden away elsewhere…
* WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ?
Hmm. There are so many. I love the smell of rain, especially when it’s been a warm day out and it’s the first rain, pumpkin pie becasue it always takes me back to the Burrow, pine trees, and warm leather, especially the particular scent of Scorp’s leather jacket I bought him for his birthday. It’s wonderful. But you are never to repeat that to anyone! I swear I’ve got an arsenal of hexes just waiting for you if you try it!
I also like to play Quidditch with my cousins, but I don’t play for the house team or anything, it’s not really my style. I also like to just have a fly on my broom. There’s something thrilling and intoxicating about the feel of being suspended high up there with the wind rushing past you. It’s incredible.
A good practical joke is always a favorite of mine. It probably comes from growing up with Roxy and Fred as older people to look up to though. They are just like their da. I love them. Truthfully I feel that way about all of my family. We’re close knit and they’re all amazing people. That also applies to the extended family like 'Uncle’ Neville, 'Auntie’ Luna, and their families as well. Luna is actually one of my favorite people in the world. I love to go visit Lys and Lor on hols and talk to her about things. She’s got the most unique points of view in the whole world and doesn’t expect me to have all the answers. Actually, one of the things I have always loved most in this world is other people. Albus, who’s as close to me as a brother and my most trusted friends. Scorpius, who is more than just a mate, even if it all went terribly and I can’t look at him without my stomach tying itself into knots becasue I’m either anxious or missing him and I don’t really know which… My Aunts and Uncles and cousins. Even my ridiculous little bother Hugo. They all made the world a brighter place just by existing for most of my life. It’s just hard to carry the burden of everyone’s expectations…
I also love silly little things like swimming in the summer, and flirting a bit or going shopping in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. Looking at the stars is one of life’s little pleasures, as are new, fashionable, clothes and shoes. Music is also among my favorite things. There are so many things that I enjoy I could tell you about them all day, but I think this is probably enough of my talking your ear off.
Character Questionnaire
Answer at least three of the following questions about your character. This could be in character or a third period explanation.
What does your character value in a friendship? At this point in life she values people who look at her as an individual. Not a cog in a greater machine. She’s been a Weasley, Hermione’s daughter, part of a trio… etc for all of her life and she’s been trying (in the wrong ways maybe) to buck that co-dependence. SO she wants friends who accept her as she is, who thin of her as her own person, and who don’t put pressure on her to be a part of a legacy.
How would your character describe their own work ethic? Is that an accurate measure of themself? She is a hard worker, to the point of making herself crazy at times, and she absolutely will not admit that. She’ll tell you shes capable and will do her job well, thoroughly, and on time, but she will not tell you that if you put her in a crunch she might work herself to anxiety attacks to get ti don’t on time.
How would a stranger who has just met your character describe them? Right now, probably a bit cold. A bit too sharp. If they’re perceptive perhaps they’ll say those things are an attempt to hid something else, probably hurt and fear. Not rude, exactly, but not soft.
What magical skill or talent is your character most proud of? Her curse breaking. She decided young she wanted to follow after her Uncle Bill in profession and worked very hard to earn the marks to do so. She’s been top of her trainee pool from the start and is on track to head a team when she completes training. This is, to her mind, her great achievement. It’s something she did for herself, telling her Uncle not to give her any recommendation or benefit. That’s worth gold as far as she’s concerned, because unlike going itno the family business or the ministry, she’s not relying on the name of her parents, just her own skill and work ethic.
Para Sample
Rose hadn’t had occasion to throw much of a party since her birthday the previous winter. While the annual ball for St. Mungos had been fun it was a much more prim sort of fun, full of champagne and fine dresses. Rose wanted to spice things up a bit, less mystery and more playfulness.
Back in her Hogwarts days she’d had a party in the shack every Halloween night from her fourth year on. It had been, in her not at all humble opinion, the social event of the year. Costumes required, some years masks as well, and always full of fun and whatever strange concoctions she could come up with. The Alice In Wonderland theme in her seventh year had been her triumph, filled with glowing giant mushrooms for seating and drinks that did all sorts of strange things to you. It was a bonus of having cousins who spent all summer in a joke shop.
So it shouldn’t have been of any real surprise to her cousins when they received invitations to a costumed Halloween after party with instructions to show up at the Burrow after the ball, with their dates if they wished, and enjoy a night out. Rose had already decorated the back yard, making use of the pavilion that had once been the venue of Bill and Fleur’s wedding. It was decorated now in low light, full of candles and spiderwebs and all the spooky trimmings of a Halloween party. Grandma molly had helped with the food and drink, a boon especially since rose wasn’t much good in the kitchen. Now all she had to do was put on the music and wait for the family to show up.
And they’d better be in costume or she’d have their heads.
~~~~~
The cafe was quiet, with only a few scattered tables occupied by people who looked like they had chosen it for that very reason.  Clint certainly had.  It had just reopened after five years of sitting vacant, and had yet to regain all its capabilities let alone its clientele.
How many businesses were there out there just like this one?  Stuck in the past and trying to pick up where they left off when the world moved on without them?  How many would fail?  How many had been repurposed while the owners were blipped?  Everyone was back now, but adjusting to this might be even harder than it had been to adjust to them being gone. Some people had never moved on and had welcomed the return, but what of the people who had?  Past and present colliding couldn’t be easy to deal with, and even those in the former group like Clint had found picking up again impossible.
Staring thoughtfully out the window, he saw Wanda crossing the street toward the cafe, the sun gleaming on her hair making it glow like fire, and for a moment another redhead was brought to mind.  The shade is all wrong, he thought, ignoring the pain in his heart and rising to his feet to greet her as she approached.
“Clint, it’s good to see you,” she said, wrapping her arms around him.  He noted how her smile didn’t reach her eyes, and how the hug felt almost absent, like part of a routine with no feeling behind it.
“Sorry, it's been a while,” he apologized.  He had called her when he’d moved to the city, told her what had happened, but this was the first time he’d seen her since Tony’s funeral.  Taking his seat again, he surveyed her quickly as she ordered her coffee, then asked for a refill himself. She looked thinner, sharper, like her features had been carved from stone.  “You look good,” he said anyway.
This time when she smiled it was slightly more genuine, like she was still in there somewhere, just sleeping.  “So do you,” she replied, knowing full well he was lying so doing the same in return.  “Tired of the mohawk?”
Clint chuckled self consciously, rubbing the side of his head where they hair had grown back in.  “Yeah, well… it’s a pain to keep up.”  The waitress arrived with their coffee and they took a moment to just try to relax in each other’s company.  It was slightly easier now that the ice was broken.  “How have you been?” He asked eventually.  He knew it was a stupid question, obviously she wasn’t doing well, but it was what one asked after not seeing each other for some time.  Or any time really,  Standard small talk.
She seemed to take his question more seriously though, and contemplated it longer than he expected.  “Every once in a while I have a moment where I think maybe I will get through this and move on again, but it always fades,” she replied, eyes fixed somewhere outside the large window.
Wanda was so young, but had lost so much in so few years.  Her parents, her brother, her lover, her friend.  It was too much for one person, and it wasn’t fair that she had to go through this.  She has nothing and you have everything, yet you throw it all away. He hated the thought, the guilt.  Would he ever be able to be around most of his friends again without this nagging guilt? When Wanda had lost Pietro it had almost tore her apart, but she had been so strong, had turned her pain into good instead of letting the darkness consume her like he had.  She was the one who deserved her loved ones back, who deserved to be happy, to live with more than just regret and loss.
When Clint looked up at her again he found her studying him with a piercing gaze, like she could see deep down into his soul, see the ugliness, the rot that was eating him up from the inside.
He looked away.
“The offer still stands.  If you wanna come back to the Avengers, we could use the help getting everything back up and running smoothly again,” he said, clearing his throat.  What if she secretly hated him? If she resented him for getting his family back while hers was gone forever?  But not Natasha; Natasha they had both lost.
“I appreciate it,” Wanda replied evenly, her voice not cold, but not warm either.  “But I need to be on my own right now.”  She paused for a long moment, and when she continued it was with the first hint of emotion in her voice,  “I might travel for a few weeks.  There are too many memories… maybe going somewhere I have not been will help.”
Clint got that.  Despite what he was doing for the Avengers, his words to Rhodey about helping, he had yet to set foot back on the destroyed base.  He wasn’t quite ready to face that yet, but he would have to soon.  “I could go with you… if you wanted,” he said quietly, more a plea than an offer.
The wall she had built up between them seemed to crumble then, even if only a little, and she reached across the table and took his hand.  “You are needed here,” she said, a faint but affectionate smile on her lips, “But I appreciate the offer.”
Laying his free hand over hers, Clint squeezed it gently.  He wasn’t so sure he was needed anywhere, maybe he never had been, but he didn’t voice this. He had lost Natasha, but Wanda had lost pretty much everyone.  Everyone except for him.  And it was so easy to forget that while it had been over five years for him, for Wanda it had been only weeks since Vision’s death.  “Just know the offer is always there. Whenever you need me, I’m here.”
“Thank you, Clint,” she said softly, her eyes slightly wet.  Maybe she was a bit distant, a bit cut off from her emotions, but he knew Wanda was still in there, he just had to coax her out.  And he had meant his words, he would be there for her no matter what.  “I do not know how I would have gotten through losing Pietro without you, or the others.  We must stick together, yes?”
“Yes,” he replied without hesitation.  When Pietro had died she had had an army to rally around her, but now who was left?  He and Sam were probably the only ones she had spent any amount of time with left, unless she wanted to go hang out at the old folks home or wherever it was that Steve had taken up residence.  He had essentially abandoned her, abandoned all of them, but Clint wasn’t quite ready to work through his feelings on that whole issue yet.
“Then you know I am here for you as well,” Wanda continued.  Clint nodded, figuring that was acknowledgement enough, but she wasn’t finished.  “She would be proud of you.”
The words were supposed to be comforting, but they hit him like a sucker punch to the gut, knocking all the air from his lungs.  How could she be proud?  Natasha had given her life for him so he could get his family back, and he was throwing that second chance away.  The cost had been too great.
Wanda could clearly read his thoughts written all over his face and squeezed his hand harder.  “Above all else she would want you to be happy, and would be proud of you for taking the needed steps.  And trying to fill her shoes on the team as you are doing.”
Clint chuckled a little bitterly and shook his head.  “No one can fill her shoes, least of all me.”  For five years it had come down to Natasha.  The rest of her original team had left her holding the ball, but she never once dropped it.  She kept everything going, proved to be the leader he had always known she could be. She deserved to be here now, the official leader of the new wave of Avengers.  Clint was a poor substitute in her wake.  “But I have to try.  Everything she worked for… I have to keep it together.  For her.”
“It is why we keep going,” Wanda agreed.  “For all of those we have lost.”
Clint studied her for a long moment before smirking half heartedly.  “How’d you get so wise?  I’m the old guy here, you’re making me look bad.”
Her smile in return was soft and real, like the one he remembered from all those years ago.  “You do not need me for that.”
A joke?  An actual joke?  Despite trying to look wounded, Clint couldn’t help but grin back.  He hadn’t just been mourning his family those five years, but Wanda too.  Her brother had given his life to save Clint, and there was nothing he could ever do to make it up to her, but he had adopted her into his heart, made her an honorary part of his family, even if he never voiced it.  She was so strong, so resilient, but he worried. How much was too much? Everyone had a breaking point, he was a walking example of that.  But if she could still joke around he had to believe she hadn’t reached hers yet.  She resembled Natasha in that manner.  “Ohhhh, I see how it is.  Kick me while I’m down.  I get it.”
“You make such an easy target,” she replied, and for a moment it was just like old times.  Wanda wasn’t much for joking around, she was one of the more stoic members of the team, but Clint seemed to bring out her playful side more than the others.  He took pride in that, same as how he had always prided himself in being the one who could make Natasha laugh.  Not a polite chuckle, or something soft and breathy, but a full on belly laugh. It had been beautiful, and rare, and he didn’t know another person who could accomplish it.  Had been able to accomplish it.  Damn it.
“Well if I’m expected to take a beating right now, I might as well risk trying the pancakes here as well.  Not sure they’re back up to snuff yet,” Clint said, signalling the waitress.  “You in?” Maybe he’d even throw in a side of bacon.  It would be the first solid meal he’d had in weeks, and if he ended up with food poisoning it would just be his luck, honestly.
“Why not.”
If only it could always be like this.  If only they could forget all the loss and pain and heartache and just enjoy the day, and each other’s company.  Talk about banal subjects like the weather, or some stupid tv show.  If only the world, or the universe in this case, were a kinder place.  No crazies with god complexes trying to rule it or ruin it. Just peace, and happiness, with everyone they loved around to share it.
If only.

Phantom Pain (21)
FANDOM - MARVEL MCU
PAIRING - Bucky X Reader
WARNINGS - Bad Habits and Rough Sex, Angsty and Dark AF.
DESCRIPTION - Everybody in the world knew of you, but not who you really were. Some called you a vigilante, some called you a criminal and some called you a hero but all of them called you The Phantom.
Only two people knew your real identity and they swore to never tell anyone but when The Avengers need to infiltrate a high-security facility, Bruce Banner deduces that you’re the only one who can pull it off. That decision puts you and Bucky Barnes on a path you can’t turn back from, even if neither of like where it’s leading.

Chapter Twenty-One - Long Live The Queen
“Barnes, give the princess True Love’s kiss and wake her up, we haven’t got all day.”
“nrrreaargh.” You murmured and forced your eyes open.
“What’s up doc?” You croaked, crinkling your eyes at the bright lights.
“She’s alive!” Tony said dramatically, or as dramatically as he could considering how exhausted he looked.
“Nice to see you Miss King, though I’d appreciate it more if every time I saw you, you weren’t shot.” Dr Helen Cho said seriously.
“Dr Cho, but you didn’t leave your number. How else was I going to see you again?” You asked, grinning dopily at her.
“You’ll be glad to know I got the bullet out and got you into the cradle. You’ll be bruised and tender for a week or so while it heals but you’ll live.” She said professionally, ignoring your drugged attempts at flirting.
“Bruce… Bruce!” You whispered (you thought you were whispering).
He pulled away from where he was talking with Dr Cho and Tony at the end of your bed and came over to you.
“Did you keep the bullet? It was made of vilranium, Vibrabium.”
“Vibranium, we know.” Bruce said.
“That’s bad right? Oh, Bye Doctor Cho!” You yelled, making Bruce jump back in shock.
She nodded politely to you at the door and you tried to wave to her, frowning when your hand wouldn’t move. You turned to look at it and realised you had two hands on your left side. No, that was someone else’s hand. Someone was holding your hand. Your eyes travelled along the limp, over the shoulder and to the blue grey eyes that were gazing at you with worry.
“Bucky! Bruce look, Bucky’s here!” You shouted giddily and even Bucky cracked a smile at your reaction.
“Uh yeah, Prince Charming hasn’t left your side since you were shot.” Tony interjected.
“Nooooo. Why?” You asked him.
“I needed to make sure you were alright.” Bucky said.
“M’fine. Twas only a little bullet wound.” You said, squeezing his hand comfortingly.
“How are you feeling?” Bruce asked you.
“Good, happy. Tired.” You decided.
“That will be the pain meds, they should wear off in a couple of hours.” Tony said.
“Sleep it off Domniţă.” Bucky suggested and you happily prepared to comply.
You tried to tell him to go get some rest himself, that you were fine and you’d see him later. What you actually said was…
“Don’t be here when I wake up, I’ll be happier if you’re not.”
Bucky felt a sharp sting in his chest at your words and as your eyes fluttered closed he dropped your hand and left, stopping at the door to check you really were alright.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tony was working in his lab when you wandered past a couple of hours later. You were checking your exposed stomach as you walked, wonderment on your face.
“Are you still high?” Tony called and you looked up at the sound of his voice and wandered over to him.
“No, just groggy.” You said.
“So, can we talk about the Vibranium bullet we dug out of your abdomen a few hours ago?” he asked, looking pissed.
“I hesitated, I couldn’t pull the trigger. He’s my father… The next thing I knew he’d pulled a gun of his own and shot me. I phased just in time, expecting the bullet to go right through me and when it didn’t, I realised it was Vibranium.” You said.
“You were lucky, an inch to the left and you’d be dead. “Tony said, worry bleeding through the faux indifference in his tone.
“I’m not so sure it’s luck, he wasn’t trying to kill me. It was a warning. “You said.
Tony’s jaw ticked and you glared at you.
“He shot you and you’re defending him?” He demanded.
“I’m just saying, he’s been manufacturing guns for two decades and he’s an excellent shot. If I’m alive, it’s because he wanted me to survive.” You told him.
“Let’s just say you’re right and he wasn’t trying to murder you in cold blood, he still shot you in the stomach. Your father pointed a gun at you and pulled the trigger.” Tony said exasperatedly.
“I know that, I was there!” You snapped.
“Which he wouldn’t have been able to do if you’d shot him first. Face it, you care about him still and he doesn’t give a damn about you.”
“Tony, that’s enough.” You warned.
“No, it’s not enough. I’m nowhere near done. He doesn’t love you princess, he never did. You think your mom dying changed him, but it just revealed who he really was. He probably killed her as well and deep down, you’ve already thought of that.”
“How dare you! He loved her, he loved us both.”
“Yeah, then why did the company stray from the path your mother put it on when she died?”
“Because he didn’t want to help people anymore, she helped people and she was still murdered under the tree on Christmas morning! He didn’t think the world deserved any help, any goodness.” You spat bitterly.
“Stop empathising with him! “Tony yelled.
“I can’t!”
“You’re afraid to love anyone in case your heart gets broken because you think you’ll end up like him but guess what? He already broke your heart; you’re already becoming him. Keep justifying his actions and one day it’ll be you The Avengers are hunting down.”
You reeled in shock at the harshness of the words and before you could even think about what you were doing, you were stumbling away, stifling your sobs.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You haphazardly shoved clothes into a suitcase, fighting back tears as you did. If Tony wanted you gone, you would go. You should never have come here in the first place; you should have known it wouldn’t work out.
You were a vigilante; sure, you could work with other if you needed to, but you weren’t used to being part of a team.
“What are you doing?”
You whirled around to see Bucky stood just inside your door looking at you with alarm.
“I’m packing. It’s time for me to leave.” You said, turning away from him and shoving the rest of your clothes inside the case.
“No. You’ve just been shot!” He growled.
“And thanks to Doctor Cho I’m fine, just a little tender.” You pointed out, zipping the case closed.
“Don’t, don’t do this.” He ordered or pleaded.
“Barnes, I don’t live here. I’m not an Avenger, I work alone. And I can take care of myself.” You insisted, pulling the suitcase behind you as you headed for the door.
Bucky didn’t move out of your way, but you hadn’t really expected him to.
“Whatever you think your reasons are for running away, they’re wrong. You’re better off here, safer here.” He said.
“Safer with you?”
“Why is it really so terrible to imagine it? Why would you rather run away from me than admit that you might be safe, happy even with me?” He demanded.
You dropped the handle of the suitcase and approached him.
“I can’t do that. Please, please stop pushing it.” You begged.
“Look me in the eyes and tell me truthfully that you don’t want it, that it’s more than fear holding you back.”
You sighed and met his eyes, letting him trap you in his gaze. You wanted to tell him that you didn’t care for him, that you didn’t yearn for him, that you didn’t want to throw yourself into his arms and never let go. But you couldn’t, it was too big a lie.
So you did what you did best and manipulated the truth.
“I can’t, because yeah, deep down I want more than this. More than just fucking. But it’s too much too fast James. I’ve always pushed that part of myself aside and now I can’t and it’s because of you. So I need space, I need to breathe. I’m overwhelmed by you.”
He tangled his fingers in your hair and pulled you forward to press a soft kiss to your temple.
“I know you don’t feel the way I do, but I though you might respect me too much to manipulate me like that.” He murmured.
He stepped back and to the side, clearing a space for you to leave the room.
You picked up the handle of your suitcase and ignoring the throbbing pain in your abdomen, pulled it to the door.
“Goodbye Domniţă.” He whispered behind you.
Tony’s words were haunting you. Your father had already broken your heart and you were already closed off.
But you weren’t anything like Alexander King. You hadn’t pulled the trigger.
You abruptly dropped the suitcase and let it clatter to the floor. Bucky panicked, thinking you were hurt and he grabbed a hold of you.
“I’ll stay, I’ll stay here where it’s safe. On one condition.” You said.
He sighed and prepared himself, knowing you were going to push him away.
“Don’t leave me alone tonight.” You begged softly.
He couldn’t have looked more shocked if you had slapped him.
“What are you saying?” He asked in trepidation.
“I want to renegotiate the terms of our agreement.” You said.
“You’re allowing sleeping in the same bed?” He asked softly, masking the pain in his eyes.
“No. I… I want it all. Bucky I need you, I don’t know why or how it happened but I need you and the thing that would really break my heart would be walking out of this room. I would understand if you said no though and I would deserve it.”
“Domniţă?”
“Yes?”
“Let’s go to bed.”

 My laptop broke, and I lost this whole chapter and everything else I'd written. The one I'm using now has a different word processor so i think the layout is a little different but I can't seem to change it.

Endgame Plot Leaks for act 1 and 2 (Supposedly)
*maybe spoilers?* Read at your own risk and interest
-The first act of the movie isn't very action heavy but moves very quickly and covers a lot of ground.
-Tony and Nebula are trapped in space.
-The whole opening is a spiritual reimagining Tony's "escape from the cave."
-He uses pieces of Nebula to repair the ship and escape to Earth.
-Title card
-Thanos is on Titan 2, alone and meditating.
-Gamora appears to speak with him. She forgives him for his actions, and apologizes for her own.
-Gamora disintegrates to reveal he's using the gauntlet to do some weird-ass puppet show for himself with the image of Gamora. This shows the audience that while damaged, the gauntlet still works.
-Ant-Man is falling through the quantum realm. He trips through time, seeing the past and future laid out before him. He sees himself becoming Ant Man, going to prison, and even gets a glimpse of his daughter years down the road.
-He tries to exit the realm as close to the present as possible but lands a couple of weeks later than intended. How convenient!
-He exits on the roof next to the van and Pym's equipment. No one is to be seen.
-After some NYC post-snap establishing shots, we catch up with Captain America and Rhodey at the Snap support meeting.
-The scene makes it clear that Cap has absolutely no intention of moving on.
-Thor has found a place for his people to live and Rocket has joined him as Rocket doesn't really have anyone else.
-Short Valkyrie cameo here. Thor wants to find Thanos ASAP and avenge the dead by killing him. Valkyrie insists it's dangerous for the Avengers to strike back before they're ready.
It's at this point that Rocket receives a signal from the Benatar headed toward Earth.
-He and Thor intercept the ship as it lands. Rocket is super bummed to see that everyone but Nebula is dead.
-He comments on Stark's impressive modification of the ship and the two hit it off immediatley.
-Widow and Banner speak at Avengers HQ. They still aren't really sure where they stand with each other. Steve and Rhodey eventually join the group at HQ.
-Steve and Natasha want to try to do something to avenge the dead. Rhodey and Banner are ready to give up and don't believe anything can be done.
-Tony makes a stop at home to see Pepper. He makes it clear that he needs to fix what happened and she has to accept it. He leaves.
-A computer alarm sounds at Avengers HQ and the group go to see that Fury's beacon has stopped transmitting the message that lead them to it in the first place. Marvel shows up looking for Fury and they begin to explain things to her.
-Tony, Thor, Nebula, and Rocket approach the Avengers HQ. Thor senses an Infinity Stone nearby and they prepare for a fight with Thanos as they soar into the compound.
-Marvel engages in a skirmish with the understandably trigger happy Tony and Co. before Steve, Rhodey, and Widow break up the fight.
-Thor tells the rest that Marvel gives off the same energy as an infinity stone. Banner asks her if he can take some scans.
-Tony and Steve reunite. They don't speak about their differences, and only engage in awkward small talk.
-Thor expresses his wishes to go after Thanos, and Tony doesn't think it's worth the risk. Tony explains that he wants to fix things just as badly as they all do, but that's he's made the mistake of running into things headfirst too many times and if they're going to attempt anything, it needs to be done carefully.
-The next day, Ant Man shows up at Avengers HQ. His daughter and family have all disappeared and he's freaked out.
-Rhodey makes a joke about how many people have shown up at the door in the last day.
-They tell Ant Man what happened with Thanos.
-Ant Man explains the breakthrough they had with the quantum realm. Scott is convinced that they can go back in time to change the events of the past and stop Thanos, but Tony makes it clear that changing the past drastically is too dangerous.
-Ant Man is hysterical and begs Tony to try anything, telling him about how he saw his older daughter in the quantum realm and believes that some reality where she is alive must exist. This strikes a chord with Tony.
-Banner finished analyzing his scans of Marvel and speaks with Tony. He tells him that Captain Marvel is almost a perfect replica of an infinity stone herself (even more powerful than Scarlett Witch,) and this leads Tony to the idea that he may be able to replicate the stones with the right tech. This would enable them to retrieve the stones in the past without drastically upsetting space/time.
-Tony goes to Wakanda with Banner, Marvel, Rocket, Nebula, and Rhodey to look into some of Shuri's research and her scans of Vision.
-They are able to get some useful information that will help them create something to control the stones.
-M'Baku pledges to help them should the need arise. Tony asks him to continue using their tech to help the world deal with the repercussions of the snap.
-The rest of the group go look for Clint. They run into him showing off his new combat skills as Ronin. They manage to recruit him.
-On Titan 2, Thanos has another conversation with young soul stone Gamora. She shows him all of the souls he snapped.
-Now the group begin to plan their assault on Thanos.
-The plan is to copy each of the stones in the past via the quantum realm and form a new gauntlet.
-The info from Shuri's computer helps them understand how to build a receptacle for the stones.
-Captain Marvel's composition helps them understand how to copy the stones.
-Once they get the new gauntlet, they will undo the snap and then attempt to kill Thanos to keep him from doing more damage.
-Ant Man will help one team enter the quantum realm and Marvel will help the other team pass through it.
-We get a timeskip montage that brings us into the second act of the film. They aren't explicit about how long the skip is, but it isn't nearly as long as other leaks have suggested.  Maybe a few weeks max.
-In the montage, Tony reworks some old tech with Banner and Rocker to make devices for copying the stones. They also make suits for everyone. We get a sneak peak at the War Buster Armor. Cap gets his shield back.
-Before they set off, there are some character moments.
-Thor and Ronin discuss the loss of their families.
-Natasha and Banner talk about Banner being unable to summon Hulk.
-Tony and Steve have an awkward conversation about working together again.
-The team heads out in two groups. One will get the Space and Mind stones, and one will get the Reality and Power stones. They will regroup after that and move onto the final two stones.
-Space and Mind: Tony, Ant Man, War Machine, Natasha, Banner. Battle of NYC. The Tesseract is in plain sight, mind stone is literally inside Stark tower at one point with only Loki defending it.
-Banner is tasked with copying the Tesseract while Natasha and War Machine help defend it.
-Banner struggles to bring out the Hulk still and Natasha tries to help coax him out but is unsuccessful.
-Tony and Ant Man go after Loki and the scepter, running into past Cap, who they have a brief comedic interaction with.
-They disarm Loki immediately after his conversation with Past Tony and copy the scepter before giving it back to him, much to his surprise (evacuating the situation after copying stones to the shock of past characters becomes a bit of a running joke.)
-Banner comes face to face with the past Hulk after Hulk saves him from some Chitauri. They share a silent state amd Banner has some kind of visible mental epiphany.
-With both stones copied, they ditch the city, much to the confusion of the old Avengers.
-Reality and Power: Thor, Cap, Marvel, Rocket, Clint, and Nebula. Rocket and Thor's combined knowledge tell them that there were two stones on Nowhere at one time.
-They intercept the Guardians showing the stone to the Collector and demand he bring them the Reality Stone.
-He brings them to the massive receptacle he keeps the reality stone in and they prepare to copy the stones.
-Unfortunately for them, they still need to deal with Ronan. Rocket figures that preventing him from showing up entirely will affect time/space too much.
-Marvel, Thor, Rocket, and Nebula fight alongside the past Guardians to hold back Ronan's army while the stones are copied, mostly playing defense so as not to change the past too much.
-Ronin and Cap defend the stones up close.
-They manage to copy the stones and abandon the Guardians, much to their confusion.
-During the copying scenes, we see Thanos on Titan 2. While the stones are being copied, the stones in his gauntlet begin to flicker as if they're being activiated. Thanos notices this and puts on the gauntlet. He pauses for a moment and says "Stark."
-The group meet back at HQ. On the way through the Quantum Realm, Tony sees that he and Pepper have a daughter in the future. They repair equipment and Cap congratulates Tony on a clever plan. They send Thor and Cap to go find Wong for the next phase of the plan.
-Natasha and Banner discuss Hulk. Banner realizes that he hasn't been appreciate of the Hulk saving his ass and treats him like a child.
-Tony goes home to see Pepper before they finish the mission. He's attacked by several Outriders at his home.
-He kills them and rushes back to HQ.
-Cap and Thor are also attacked while recruiting Wong.
-Everyone returns to HQ. Thanos attacks.
-Thanos is kicking ass. Marvel holds her own. Banner manages to Hulk out and evens the odds.
-Wong tricks Thanos and traps him in an alternate dimension. He's clear that it won't hold Thanos for long.
-The group begin hunting the last two infinity stones after this. Unsure what happens past this point.

“Got any new year’s resolutions?”
“Can’t say that I do, Tony.”
“Such a bore, Captain.” Steve sighs at Tony. He really should have known better than to stop by the kitchen on his way to the gym. He removes the lid from the jar containing the rest of the smoothie he’d made before his run, and hoping to avoid the New Years Eve party discussion, swallows down what’s left. But Tony just stares at him expectantly, popping a few chocolate covered blueberries into his mouth with a knowing smile as he makes himself comfortable leaning against the kitchen island.
“Don’t die?”
“That’s a nearly every day resolution for us.” Tony rubs his hands together. “What you need is a good way to start the new year. Maybe be kissed by a pretty lady?” Steve frowns, not liking where this is headed at all.
“I don’t want to go to another party, Tony.”
“Well, that’s a terrible way to welcome the new year - with a bah humbug mentality towards my parties.”
“I am attending!” Thor chimes in cheerfully, tugging at the towel wrapped around the back of his neck with a wide smile.
“See? Thor is coming! And happy about my party to boot.” Tony smile in agreement with the Asgardian as Sam and Bucky walk into the living room, making Steve think he can finally get out of this conversation.
“Isn’t Pepper’s new assistant going to be there? Man, I’ll really miss Erika. Glad her husband got that job in Japan though.” Clint remarks casually from the other side of the bar, tucked close to the wall with a bowl of ice cream in front of him. Huh. Steve hadn’t even noticed he was there. That’s what he gets for attempting to dodge Tony...an annoyingly intuitive former assassin.
“The cute dame who spilled the coffee all over Steve?” Steve suppresses the groan threatening to spill from his mouth, shooting a glare at his best friend instead. Bucky just shrugs then leans on the wall by Clint, all eyes now on Steve.
“I do not want to go to the New Years’ Eve party.” He says it firmly, turning away from his friends to rinse out the dregs from his cup.
“I do not like green eggs and ham.” Tony mocks as three sets of heels come clicking up behind him.
“Tell me the party isn’t Dr. Seuss themed, Tony.”
“No, Pepper. But that is an excellent idea. F.R.I.D.A.Y. please make a note of that for future party ideas.”
“Yes, boss.” Tony give Pepper a smile before directing his attention to her right.
“Ah! The cute dame in question!” Steve scowls at Tony while Bucky actually leans back in his seat a little to wink at her. Watching her forehead furrow slightly before Erika chastises Tony and Bucky for teasing the new hire.
“It’s alright, Erika. I’ve endured worse than being called a cute dame. What can I help you with Mr. Stark?”
“Well you see, Captain Rogers over there doesn’t want to go to my fabulous New Years’ party tonight.”
“Isn’t that his prerogative, sir?” She cocks her head to the side, ever so slightly and Clint smirks at Steve, watching him definitely not watch her.
“I won’t stand for that kind of talk in this company, Miss Y/N.” She gives him a sharp nod and small smile. “Alright, now, if you were me - how would you convince the illustrious Mr. Rogers to attend?”
“I believe you would have already mentioned the copious amounts of liquor, all the attractive models and generally beautiful women, and the delicious finger foods.” Tony nods at her words, forefinger tapping against his lips. “Well, I would need to know more about him but I think for starters, I would attempt to find something the good Captain was interested in. Perhaps invite the World War II vets that live nearby? Give him a three hour cop out time? Have Ms. Romanov use her far more talented self to get Mr. Rogers to agree to come?” She pauses then looks Steve dead in the eye, fighting not to smile. “Fondue?”
Bucky snorts loudly, faking a cough to cover his smothered laughter as Steve’s eyes widen and he damn near begins to stutter out a series of questions...only for her phone to ring.
“Excuse me everyone.” And she clicks her way down the hallway a little to take her call.
“Where did you say you picked her up from again?” Sam asks Pepper with a smile.
“She came highly recommended from Fury.” Tony pipes up as Erika nods seriously.
“Mrs. Stark, that was Thomas from Tech, eighth floor. He wanted to let you know that the loading dock damaged some of the cargo due to the snow and ice on the ramps.”
“We’ll go down and take a look. Did he say what the cargo was?”
“He sent an itemized list.”
“Very good, Y/N. Well, Tony, I came up here to let you know that you’ll need to find another DJ. The one you booked slid on some ice this morning - on his motorcycle - and broke his collarbone and fractured two ribs.”
“Pay him for a week, his hospital stay and I’ll find someone else for tonight. And I trust you two ladies will also be coming tonight?” Heads bob in agreement before Pepper kisses his cheek and says a quick goodbye before disappearing towards the elevator with her assistants in tow. Tony turns his gaze back to Steve, eyes damn near twinkling at the flustered face Steve had pulled just a few minutes ago.
“Fondue?”
“Shut up.” He glares at Bucky then turns towards the gym, Bucky quickly catching up with his escaping best friend, both sets of super soldier ears catching Thor innocently asking what fondue was.
“I suppose this means you’re going tonight now?”
“I’m gonna use you as a punching bag, Buck.”
“Like that’s gonna get that pretty dame outta your head, punk.” They didn’t even make it to the gym before Steve punched Bucky. Hard.
Bucky just laughed.
Tumblr media
You could hear the music and chatter through the elevator doors, nervously running hands down the front of your dress before Erika politely coughed as her husband chuckled beside her.
“Better get used to this. Tony likes parties to distract himself. Also, I think, as a sort of calendar too.”
“That’s a loud ass calendar.” You mutter, warily looking out of the elevator doors at the throng of people before you, trying to fight back the cringe threatening to flash across your face.
“Come on. Night’s young and the elevator doors aren’t just going to stay open.” Erika gives you a little shove forward, sending you from the safe silver space and into the noisy expanse. “Don’t worry, this doesn’t happen too often. And you’ve handled everything else so far with flying colors!” She nudges her shoulder against your own before dragging her husband towards the bar.
“You look lost.” Tony’s words made you jump a little, making his easy going smile widen just a tad. Smiling to hide your nerves, you nod.
“Overwhelmed, I think is the word I would have chosen.” Tony offers his arm with a small eye roll.
“Overwhelmed? By anyone who knows Fury? I highly doubt that. Now, what will you be drinking?” You hesitate slightly, Tony guiding you towards the bar, nodding and smiling as he passed his guests. “Something strong for someone who faced down Captain America?” You can feel the heat in your cheeks and ears, eyes dropping down at his teasing.
“I shouldn’t have done that. I should have been more respectful.”
“Well, he is old.” Tony agrees with a nod, holding up two fingers to the bartender. “Shot? Now, no saying no. I’m your boss.” He hands you the shot glass and you clink before tossing it back and letting out a little hiss at the burn of the alcohol.
“12% my boss.” Tony points a finger and shakes it gently, grinning.
“Ah, Captain! And the Silver Sergeant!” Your spine straightens, shooting Tony a panicked look as his smile only grows. He leans in and hugs you, whispering “Guess that I’m only 12% of an ally right now.”
You’re being more than 12% of a dick right now, Tony Stark. You think as he disappears into the crowd. Forcing yourself to move a little closer to the bar and order a drink. You hear a soft grunt, which makes you wrinkle your forehead a little.
“You, uh, come here often?” You can’t help the chuckle that spills out of your mouth, quickly thanking the bartender before turning to face Captain Steven Grant Rogers.
“No.” Bucky’s shoulders shake a little at the interaction, moving around the two of you to get to the bar. Steve’s neck and ears turn a lovely shade of pink at your answer. Your eyes quickly widen as your teeth sink into your bottom lip. “Sorry. You’re just, um, fluster-worthy?”
“Are you asking…?” He rumbles out a light laugh. “Is that a word?” You take a little sip to steel yourself.
“I said it aloud, thus it is a word.” You both are surprised at your confident tone, the good captain smirking down at you.
“There she is again.” Bucky thrust a glass into Steve’s hand before heading towards Clint a handful of feet away. You miss the look they share, your mind too busy trying to think of a way to first, apologize and second, smooth this over so as not to affect your job. Sucking in a deep breath, you gesture to an empty spot by the terrace doors as he nods in agreement. You aren’t sure what you were expecting, but Steve offering his arm is not it at all. You dip your head in gratitude before linking your free arm loosely with his.
The cacophony of the room seems to die down a little once you reach the massive doors and you’re suddenly trying to dry swallow down your nerves. One of his big hands gesture to a few plush chairs.
“No, thank you. You?”
“Nah.” You chuckle against the rim of your glass as you take another sip causing him to cock an eyebrow. “Yes?”
“Just didn’t expect you to be a man of so few words, I suppose. All the stories I’ve heard…”
“Stories.” He scoffs, taking a long drink from the tumbler in his hand and dropping his gaze to the floor.
“I didn’t mean to insult you.” His blue eyes shoot up from his shoes to your eyes. “Now or, you know, earlier today.” His mouth opens to reply as you quickly blurt out, “Coulson mentioned it to me.” A chuckle rumbles out of his wide chest and you take the time to really appreciate - look - at what he’s wearing. The gray blue button up is stretched across that wide expanse of chest, with a black dress jacket fitting snugly over that. Black slacks and black dress shoes complete the outfit, you notice just before his voice rang out, moving a little closer to you as the crowd shifted in the room with more couples beginning to dance.
“I didn’t take it personal.” A handsome, boyish smile is plastered on his face - reassuring you. “Just something I hadn’t heard since before I came out of the ice. Startled me.”
“Well I am sorry to have startled you then, Captain Rogers.”
“Steve.” He corrects quickly before finishing his drink.
“Steve.” You confirm, smiling up at him. “I didn’t mean to spill the coffee on you a couple weeks ago either. You just seem to make me nervous.”
“Why do I make you nervous, Y/N?” There is a sudden lump in your throat as he smiles down at you, some of his rigid posture relaxing just a tad.
“Well, you and Bucky,” His smile goes down a few watts, you’re sure of it, “Are god’s honest heroes. Both now and during World War II.” And the wattage is back up. “On top of that, you are a very imposing figure - 6 plus of solid muscle - who is apparently a sometimes terrifying teddy bear?”
“You callin’ me soft?” He teases, easing just a tad closer as you begin to relax, his finger tapping absentmindedly against his empty tumbler. You flutter a hand to your chest, gasping softly.
“Do I look like a person to call you names, good sir?”
“I don’t know,” He drops his gaze again before raising them slowly, those blue eyes piercing through you, “Pretty dames can get away with an awful lot.”
“You callin’ me pretty?”
“Yes ma’am.” You nearly drop your glass at the bashful blush that creeps up his neck and the too cute drop of his gaze. You down what’s left of your drink and clear your throat, grateful when a waiter comes by to gather both your glasses. You take a chance and reach forward, placing a hand on his forearm and give it a little squeeze as his head snaps up.
“Thank you for the compliment.” You mutter softly, looking him in the eye briefly before scanning the crowd to get away from his intense baby blues. You weren’t sure your heart could take too much of those eyes gazing directly into your own.
Tumblr media
Steve shuffles a little, Sam having moved into his line of sight a half dozen feet behind you. Sam is pointing at you and then his own glass and making a forward rolling motion with his free hand. Geez.
“So, uh, how’d Tony convince you to come work here?” Hearing your soft chuckle makes his heart thrum a little louder in his chest and he can’t keep the smile from his face for long.
“Well, the money isn’t terrible,” you pause as a waiter comes by with an array of appetizers, taking a napkin and a few as he did the same. Bucky is beside Sam, pointing to the chairs - a hell of a lot more subtly than Sam - his hair swinging slightly as he gestured.
“Would you like to sit now?” He questions, his chest tightening as she smiled at him and nods, moving just a few feet to the plush red pair of chairs. She pats the chair next to her, crossing her ankles and angling her legs to the right - politely waiting for him to sit. “Anything besides the money?” He prompts her to continue, popping a bacon, cheese and artichoke encrusted square of bread into his mouth.
“I’d never been past South Dakota, so this was a big opportunity. Not just to see New York, but to travel with Pepper as well.” She pops a stuffed mushroom cap in her mouth, her eyes fluttering closed at the taste before opening and continuing. “I know it’s work, but I’ve always wanted to travel.”
“Why haven’t you?”
“Um, it’s hard to explain...I’m pretty shy most of the time and by the time I had a good job and a little extra money, most of my friends were getting married and having children so they couldn’t go. I didn’t want to go by myself, so,” He watched your left shoulder rise and fall as your fingers tuck a piece of hair behind your ear, more from habit than actual need. “I, um, just worked.”
“I know how that feels. Just waiting, ya know. It’s more difficult than havin’ an adventure.” A bout of rich laughter come from you, startling him in a wonderful way.
“Except for your kinds of adventure I suppose. Those seem pretty difficult.”
“Bucky likes to say that once they cured me of the laundry list of ailments I had, I was even more reckless than before. Which he insists is ridiculously reckless.”
“You say that as if you aren’t ridiculously reckless…” She narrows her eyes playfully, making him swallow a little harder than he intended, a shit-eating grin spreading across his face.
“Name callin’ again, Y/N.”
“Okay. Okay.” Shifting a little closer to him, she pops another appetizer into her mouth. “If you could go anywhere, Steve, where would you go?”
“Somewhere with white sandy beaches and ocean for miles. Just lying under a tree and looking out over it all. What about you, doll?”
You cock an eyebrow, but don’t say anything about the name. “I’d like to go somewhere historic, somewhere like the Mediterranean - Italy, Greece, somewhere like that. I’d also absolutely adore going to Scotland.”
“So bright, breezy wine drenched easy going places or Scotland with it’s clouds and rain and rolling green hills?”
A nod of excitement is his answer, her eyes lighting up. “Have you seen those little igloo hut things in, um, Finland I think?” He shakes his head, grinning simply for the fact that the excitement is nearly palpable. “Well, they’re little huts that you can rent and it’s surrounded by trees and you can see the Northern Lights and I would love to do that. Enjoy a hot spring during the day, pick up some weird chocolate I’ve never tried and just lay there with someone special - cause the ceilings of the igloos are super thick glass - and watch the Northern Lights til we fall asleep.”
“That sounds like a hell of an adventure, doll.”
“Erika said I was probably a travel agent or something in another life.”
“Maybe you were a great adventurer and you still got the itch to go. Maybe not discovering new, dangerous lands, but appreciating the ones we have access to now.” A boldness must have come over her again because her hand settles over his, her thumb swiping just by his own.
“I’m callin’ you soft now, Steve.” He wants to blurt out that at this point she can call him whatever she damn well pleases. Ever since Tony and Pepper had introduced her to them, he’d been starstruck. Bucky called it “mooning” on account of his “cow eyes” every time he saw her. Steve didn’t care what anyone called it either. He had a soft spot for her and if not for the fact that his tongue was currently stuck to the roof of his mouth he’d probably be a chucklehead and say something stupid.
“Just a reckless, soft, dangerous, 6 foot plus teddy bear.”
“You forgot smooth.” Leaning in closer, he mirrors you, a little too eager for closeness. Just over your shoulder is Clint - pursing his lips repeatedly and pointing at your back, making his fight back the urge to glare. “A lot smoother than Sam and Clint and Bucky.” He can feel the heat shoot up his neck and settle in, his cheeks and ears burning red as the butterflies in his stomach kick up their fluttering. Tilting your head towards the windows with a sweet and knowing smile on your lips, “Windows are reflective, Captain.”
“They’re - uh - just tryin’ to help. I got a bit of a crush.” You snap back like the thought hadn’t even crossed your mind.
“On me?” It’s spoken so quietly, had he had normal hearing he would have missed it.
“Yeah - coffee, fondue and all.” There’s silence, which he won’t admit worries him, making him sit up straighter as well. He’s pretty sure this just went upside down on him, since you just sit there with your forehead scrunched slightly - makin’ you look even cuter in his opinion - before he realizes he shouldn’t be thinking of you in that way anymore. “I’ve made you uncomfortable. And I apologize for that, doll, I mean, Y/N.” The butterflies in his stomach promptly turn to rocks in his stomach. “I won’t --” The rest of his sentence is cut off by the softness of your lips against his.
“Midnight isn’t for another two hours!” Sam shouts over your shoulder as you two pull apart, with what he’s sure is identical looks of surprise painted on both your faces.
You both ignore the light laughter around you, Steve tugging you onto your feet and slipping out the french doors to the balcony.
“I have a bit of a crush too.” Your confession whispered shyly into the chilly night air. Steve shrugs his jacket off and slips it onto your shoulders.
“Anyone I know?” He’s closer now, your soft perfume tickling his nose.
“I spilled coffee on him two weeks ago. And sort of  wrangled him into a party he really didn’t want to go to.” Her fingers brush up along a few of the buttons of his shirt before their eyes meet.
“That guy sounds like a pushover.” You move closer, your chests now almost touching. “Must be a special dame.”
“Well, he is an exceptional man. A softie at heart. A star spangled man with a plan.” He groans loudly at the last bit, causing a laugh to spill from your pretty lips. “It was really too good to pass up, Steve. You can’t hold it against me.”
“A kiss might make me feel better.” Even as he says it, he can feel the heat flush through him.
“Come here with that cute boyish smile.” This one he wants to do right, his hands fluttering down to your waist as his gaze darts from your lips to your eyes. You give him a small nod before pressing closer and raising up on the balls of your feet with your hands planted firmly on his chest.
Pressing your lips together chastely, Steve marveling at how soft your lips are before tilting his head slightly and moving them against yours gently. A soft inhale of breath through your nose spurs him on - spurs him to dart his tongue over her bottom lip. She gives a little gasp but he pulls back, her forehead scrunching up again before she opens her eyes, seeing his lips tugged upward in a gentle smile.
“Gotta treat you like a lady.”
“Really? Your hand sliding down to my ass was gentlemen-like but french kissing isn’t?”
“What a dame.” He mutters happily before his hand returns to her ass, pulling her back against his chest and his mouth slanting over hers happily and a bit greedily.
By the time they pull apart, they’re both sporting dopey smiles. “Can I take you out tomorrow night?”
“As long as you’re my New Years Eve kiss, Rogers, you got yourself a deal.”
Tumblr media
Your floating on cloud 9 the next morning at work, hastily clicking your way through a few emails when you hear a soft knock, drawing your gaze up to the tall, blonde drink of water filling out the doorway.
“Hey, doll.”
“Hey! What’re you doing here?” You rise from your desk, moving around the desk as he enters the office. When you meet in the middle, he leans down to press a soft kiss against your lips.
“I, uh, needed to talk to you.”
Uh-oh. Your chest tightens at his words. Was last night a mistake? Swallowing hard you plaster on a smile. “Go ahead.”
“We got called out for a mission. We leave in about an hour. So I wanna ask for a rain check for our date tonight.” He pauses, big blue eyes giving you a puppy dog look. “If you’d have me still.”
You relax and give a small chuckle. “I think I could wait a little longer, handsome.” His big hand wraps around yours, giving a little squeeze as his face brightens up with a smile. “Thank you for coming up here and talking to me.” You heave a little sigh and squeeze his hand back, feeling his thumb rub across the back of your hand soothingly. “I don’t know what to say. I’ve always been really bad at goodbyes.”
“Yeah. Me too.”
“I guess just kiss me good and be safe, Steve.”
“I can do that, doll.”
Tumblr media
“Miss, the boss requires your presence in the infirmary.” You set the papers onto your keyboard, grab your cell and rush towards the elevator, pressing the up button a few more times than necessary. You’d never been called to the infirmary and that worried you more than multi-billion dollar deal paperwork.
Once you arrive, you shove your phone into your dress pocket and book it down the hallway towards the more private end where the Avengers are usually treated.
You see Sam leaning against the wall, nodding to his right as you approach, your forehead scrunching as you turn, not able to stop the loud gasp that escapes from you.
Steve and Bucky look like they’ve gone a few dozen rounds with heavy machinery.
“They heal fast,” Wanda whispers as she enters behind you, giving your elbow a friendly squeeze. “They looked worse when Tony and the Hulk dragged them out of the building. I know that isn’t helpful, but just to put it in perspective.”
“Barnes and Rogers are sedated because they had multiple fractures in their legs and feet and continued to walk and run on them.” Tony come in with a little less of his usual sashay, huffing out a breath as he gave a small smile. “Just easier to deal with them this way.”
“Is this why you called me down here, sir?” You swallow the lump in your throat, moving closer to stand between both beds. You take Bucky’s hand and give it a squeeze before turning and running your fingers through Steve’s messy hair.
“Figured they’re rather wake up to your face than mine. And I know the boss, she won’t mind.” Tony winks at you before pushing off the wall and heading for the door. “Oh, and they’ll be awake in about 45 mins or so.”
“Thanks, boss.” His hand waves you off as he exits the room, Wanda giving you a wink of her own - arranging some water and glasses on the table on the other side of Steve’s bed - before gracefully sailing from the room. You withdraw your hands from the super soldiers before pulling a plush chair between them, settling in and returning your hands where they’d been, gently cradling Bucky’s hand in your own and running your fingers through Steve’s hair.
“I don’t really know many stories off the top of my head...and I’m drawing a blank on what to talk about...don’t you hate when that happens?” You chew on your bottom lip, thinking about things you had memorized that weren’t work related. “Do you guys like Edgar Allan Poe?”
Tumblr media
“The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes! - that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.”
Steve wanted to let his eyes flutter open but it felt so nice, fingers running through his hair and her soft voice easing him awake, he didn’t want to open his eyes just yet.
“But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.”
He can hear Bucky’s heartbeat kick up from its resting rate before the short pause she’d taken is broken again.
“For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.”
Bucky clears his throat, startling her.
“No offense, gorgeous, but that was a little depressing.”
“Edgar Allan Poe does tend to be more depressing, sorry. And it’s one of the few things I still have memorized that isn’t work related.”
“Real pretty though.” Steve smiles out, her hand stilling in his hair.
“Depressing pretty.” Bucky chuckles.
“Kind of like your faces right now.” She teases, both men wiggling into a sitting position and giving her playful glares. “Would you both like some water?” They both mutter out a grateful ‘yes’ as she moves to get that for them.
Once they’ve drained their glasses, she flips her chair around to face them better, sitting with a small smile gracing her lips.
“So, is it confidential? The building that whipped Captain America and Sgt. James Buchanan Barnes asses? Maybe code named reckless?”
“I see you’ve talked to Tony, doll.”
“I think I’m entitled to a little ribbing.” Both men look confused for a few minutes. “Do you not know the date? It’s almost February.” Steve knows his mouth has dropped open momentarily at this news. He honestly hadn’t thought it had been that long they’d been on mission.
“Hard to keep track of the date when you’re constantly ankle deep in mud,” Bucky grunts out, shifting in the bed.
He watches you straighten up minutely, lips thinning ever so slightly into a line before forcing a soft smile. Oh, doll.
“I’m sorry. That was selfish of me.” Bucky flicks a look at him for help, upset that he had upset you - even unintentionally.
“We aren’t upset at you, doll. We just didn’t think it had been that long.”
“Completely unintentional, beautiful, I swear.” Bucky’s words nearly overlap his own, both sets of blue eyes switching to puppy mode.
Her phone trills in her pocket, all of them falling silent. She pulls the device from her pocket and unlocks it, quickly typing out an answer before clicking it closed and standing.
“I’m sorry - I need to get some paperwork sent off. Do you need anything before I go?”
A light bulb goes on in Steve’s mind as Bucky gives a barely there shake of his head.
“Just kiss me good and don’t be upset at our grumpy old man words.” A smile, a real smile, breaks out on her face, lighting it up again.
“I can do that, handsome.” She leans in, bracing her hands on the bed before pausing just a breath away. “Only if you forgive me. I tend to be pretty sensitive.”
“Nothin’ to forgive.” He mutters before their lips meet, his hand coming up to rest on the back of her neck, not too eager to have her move away too soon. “I’ll be all healed up before tomorrow night…” He pecks at her lips after he trailed off, repeating the motion again with a smile.
“How about we have a pre-date dinner tonight? I’ll bring some food, Bucky can third-wheel it and tell me some good stories he’s got on you.”
“Chinese?” Bucky pipes up hopefully, Y/N turning to look at him before Steve tightens his fingers ever so slightly on her neck to keep her lips in close proximity to his.
“Sure.” She presses her lips firmly against his before pulling back. “I gotta go review, scan in and then mail those papers. I’ll be back in a bit.” She makes her way to the door before turning and looking as stern as she could manage with a big smile. “Listen to the doctors, please. No hobbling around on your fractures if they aren’t healed - okay?”
“Yes, ma’am.” They both chime out together.
“Thank you!” She gives a little wave as she leaves, prompting Steve to look over at his best friend.
“No telling her about that time at the beach. You know the one.”
“But, Stevie, I was gonna lead with that story...” Bucky is sporting a shit-eating grin as Steve settles back against his pillow, closing his eyes with a smile. “Hey, Steve?” He hums in acknowledgment. “You know that means that Valentine’s Day is just a couple weeks away now.”
“Not. Helping. Bucky.”

Walking The Wire (167/167)
Summary: Tony Stark always knew about Peter Parker. He didn’t know that Peter was going to get superpowers and become Spider-Man, but he always knew about Peter because Peter was his son.
This will span from pre-Iron Man up through the rest of the MCU (eventually including Infinity War) and will be for the most part canon compliant except where I’ve taken some liberties and interpreted canon a certain way.
Pairings: Pepper/Tony, Tony/Steve (endgame), Tony/Mary (past)
A/N: If you want me to tag you when I post new chapters let me know. This fic is also on AO3
I used Collider’s MCU timeline to stay canon and the title of this fic is an Imagine Dragons song that is just so fitting for Peter and Tony

Chapter One Hundred Sixty Six
-
Epilogue
One Week Later
Peter didn’t know how he managed to convince his dad to let him go with him and Steve when they went to return the stones, but he did. It was officially the last mission that Iron Man would go on but it had kind of turned into a family trip instead. The only stone that they weren’t returning personally was the Power Stone because Captain Marvel was dealing with that one instead.
“You did tell me you wanted to try the whole time travel thing,” Steve said when they prepared to leave.
“I did,” Peter said and he had absolutely no complaints on going, he just hated how careful his dad was being about the whole thing.
Their first stop was Vormir. Peter could tell that his dad wasn’t exactly okay being there, but Steve made the whole trip go quick. They weren’t there long enough for Peter to look around but there wasn’t much to even see. Knowing that that cliff was the one that Steve had jumped off of for them to get the stone made it difficult all around.
Next they went to Asgard and Peter hadn’t expected it to be so beautiful and different. Alien.
“This is a real place,” Peter said.
“Not in our present it isn’t,” his dad reminded him.
They dressed like Asgardians -- clothing courtesy of Thor -- and managed to get a good look around. The guy that took care of the bifrost and the entrance to Asgard was the only one that knew they were there and he didn’t seem to have a problem with it. He even helped them with putting the stone back. Peter had no idea how Dr. Banner had managed to get all the stones back into their original states, but he’d done it and the Reality Stone was back in the form of a liquid. After it was back where it belonged they just sort of wandered around for a bit.
The Time Stone was a weird one to return because they had to go back and see Doctor Strange. They also couldn’t really linger because it was 2017 and Peter had already been Spider-Man by then and because Steve couldn’t be out and about on account of the house arrest. It was one thing to not care about creating another timeline and another entirely to make that timeline worse for the versions of themselves that would live it.
The Scepter was an easy one to return. It was 2015 and Peter got to have a  small glimpse at what life had been like in the tower in 2015. The tower as a whole had looked entirely different and Steve explained that the penthouse floor had been destroyed by Ultron and that after everything his dad opted for a remodel. They were on look out while his dad put away the stone.
“This wasn’t exactly a happy time around here, was it?” Peter asked. “This was -- he stopped responding to me.”
“Yeah,” Steve said. “It was a hard time. Your dad and Pepper weren’t really seeing eye to eye and he was losing hope of ever getting to meet you.”
“I know,” Peter said. “We kind of talked about it. May really didn’t want him to meet me -- she thought it’d be dangerous. I think she’s realized how much of a mistake that was on her part. Anyway, we know each other now.”
Lastly they went to 2011. It was another quick trip. The tower was different again and Peter got to see the beginning of the Avengers. He also saw his letter -- the one he’d sent that he knew his dad had only managed to read right after he almost died.
“It was a relief when I thought I was going to die, that you didn’t know what I was to you,” his dad said. “But reading that letter made me hope and made me want to live.”
“I love you, dad,” Peter said in response.
They went on a few detours. Quick moments in time -- they went to the 1920s for a day and then the 1930s where they went to Brooklyn to see a small serum-less Steve. It was jarring seeing him that way -- but even then he was still a lot like the Steve they knew and because his dad couldn’t help himself, he left that Steve some money anonymously. They visited a few more years, never staying long and trying to not make too many ripples. For his dad they went to a Queen concert in 1986 and Peter was surprised at how many songs he actually knew. Peter requested that they stop and go see the original theatrical release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Steve just seemed to be enjoying seeing all the things he missed while frozen in ice.
“This will probably be the best trip we’ve ever been on,” Peter said.
“Although, we’re being very irresponsible and probably creating a whole bunch of new timelines,” his dad said.
“But you’re sure this won’t become a real problem later?” Steve asked.
“It won’t.”
Peter was just happy to spend time with his dads and since Shuri had okayed their trip, he was sure it would be fine.
--
Three Months Later
Tony appreciated how easy it was to let go of Iron Man now that the threat of Thanos was gone. He was aware that plenty of other villains existed and that some of them might even be worse than Thanos, but for the moment he was happy with how easy it seemed. Things were settling, the world was a little better. He was married. Peter was the best son he could have asked for. Things were good.
The Avengers had a new roster and while he had given up the superhero life entirely, Steve was still helping with training the new members of the team.  It kept him busy and involved when they weren’t working on their new house and Tony liked to join him sometimes. It was nice to see the next generation of heroes and he could see the appeal of getting to shape them and train them and showing them the ropes. But working on the house was also rewarding work. Steve had an artist’s eye and between him and Tony they had designed their perfect home.
In the meanwhile, they waited for the call.
Months passed. Then a few more.
The agency contacted him every once in a while, just keeping up with them, but never with the news they wanted.
“It will happen, when it happens,” Steve said. “Sooner or later.”
“When it’s meant to,” Tony said in agreement. Waiting just kind of sucked.
---
2019
“Do you know what Peter did while we were in Germany?”
Peter groaned. Steve who had been in the middle of making them dinner turned to look at him. “Back during that whole airport thing?”
Tony nodded. “I think I must have told you.”
“I don’t think I’ve heard this story,” Bucky said.
He was seated on one of the stools at the table right next to Peter and Peter could tell that he was ready for a story that he could use against Peter in the future.
“Well, I booked him a hotel and Happy was supposed to be watching him. Then again, I didn’t think that Peter would sneak out of the hotel room, but that is what he did--”
Peter raised a finger in the air. “In my defense,” he said, “I was really hyped up after the fight. I didn’t think it was big deal.”
“When I finally tracked him down he was at a rave. My fourteen year old at a rave in Germany--”
Bucky cracked up at once, laughing with his head thrown back. Peter punched him on the arm but that just made him laugh harder. Steve was laughing too.
“Anyway,” Peter said. “All I said was that my decathlon team is going on a trip to Europe this summer.”
“And you’re welcome to go as long as you don’t end up in a rave again,” his dad said and he was smirking at him.
Peter rolled his eyes. “I won’t even bring the suit. I think a break from Spider-Man might even suit me.”
“And, hey, maybe you can take that girl you like somewhere and finally tell her,” Bucky said.
“I’ve been trying,” Peter said.
And he had been trying. MJ was just a tad intimidating and whenever he tried to bring it up things just got awkward and weird and he couldn’t get the words out. Hanging out with MJ wasn’t hard -- he did it all the time whether alone or with Ned, it was just that talking about his feelings just wasn’t easy. Reading Michelle and figuring out how she felt was even harder and the last thing that Peter wanted was to ruin their friendship.
Ned seemed to be convinced that MJ did like him some days, but other days he thought she didn’t like him. Ned was absolutely no help and when it came to the trip, he was trying to get Peter to try and catch the attention of European girls on their trip which was entirely unappealing to Peter.
“Not hard enough,” Bucky said.
“It’s hard,” Peter said.
Bucky pat his shoulder with his real hand.
“You should go,” Steve said. “Hang out with your friends and see a few new places. Flirt a little.”
“Steve!”
“And definitely don’t take her to any raves,” Steve added.
Peter rolled his eyes. “She’s more into ancient libraries than raves. And I think I will tell her. I’ll come up with a plan. It’ll be great.”
His dad chuckled. “Plans never really work out perfectly, kid.”
“But maybe this way I can actually tell her and if we’re in Europe maybe I’ll find a good place to take her to when I tell her.”

2020
The call came early in the morning. Early by Steve’s standards because Tony had been wide awake going on a few cups of coffee and deep in an engine and the sun wasn’t even really up yet although it was a matter of time before Steve was up for his morning run. But it was still he, that picked up the call when Friday told him it was important.
“Hello?” Tony asked.
“Hi, is this Tony Stark?” a female voice asked.
“Yup. This is Tony,” Tony said and he waited because no one could get his direct line -- not unless Pepper or he personally gave it out.
“I’m calling from the adoption agency. We have a match for you -- she’s four years old and we think you and Captain Rogers would be a good placement for her.”
His heart felt like it wanted to beat out of his chest. This was the call that he’d been waiting two years for -- since he and Steve had gotten married and since they had both decided that adoption was definitely for them.
“I — yes, yes. We are definitely interested. Can I — What’s her name?”
“Morgana,” the woman said.
Morgana. A four year old.
She kept talking, telling him a little about the case -- the steps that came next and a bunch of other things that Tony didn’t even really hear because the call had come. He and Steve were going to adopt. Since applying there had been a whole bunch of things for them to do. There had been home visits and evaluations. He and Steve had had to attend a few parenting courses, but it was all going to be worth it. And it was finally happening. It was amazing. When he got off the phone, it didn’t take him long to run out of the workshop. K-9 got up from his charging station and barked at him before he followed.
“Steve! Steve! Peter!”
Peter opened his bedroom door first. His hair was standing up in all directions and he looked decidedly bleary eyed. Steve opened their bedroom door a few seconds after, shield at hand. “What is it, what’s wrong?”
Peter blinked at them. “There wasn’t an alarm,” he said.
Tony shook his head. “No, no. No alarm. It’s -- I can’t believe it. Steve, we’re going to be dads.”
Steve blinked at him. “We’re already dads. Have you met Peter? Our son?”
Peter laughed as Steve walked to stand by him. He leaned a sleepy head on Steve’s shoulder. “It’s too early for jokes, dad.”
Steve rubbed his arm and Peter leaned a bit heavier on him.
“The adoption agency called,” Tony said, bringing both Steve and Peter’s eyes back to him.
Steve’s eyes widened, surprised.
 Peter grinned. “Oh,” he said, “I’m going to be a big brother.”
“Yeah, kid. You are.”
Peter yawned. “I’m like really excited, but I’m also really tired,” he muttered.
Steve rubbed his shoulder gently. “I think back to bed with all of us,” Steve said, reaching for Tony’s hand. “Come on, we’ll have a huge breakfast to celebrate and you can tell me all the details.”
“Her name is Morgana,” Tony said. “She’s four.”
“Morgana,” Steve repeated. “I like it.”
“Me too. Hey, did I ever tell you I was kind of obsessed with King Arthur and the knights of the round table?”
“No,” Steve said, bemused.
“So Morgana,” Tony said, “Like Arthur’s half-sister. It’s fitting. Meant to be, kind of.”
“Morgana,” Steve whispered. Tony kissed his shoulder.
---
Peter took a look around the barn. It was red outside like most barns were. He’d actually looked up the reason for why barns were red and it was something to do with chemicals that farmers used to use to keep their wood from rotting. Now it was just paint. From the outside it looked entirely ordinary and no one would know that it housed a technologically advanced lab and workshop of one Tony Stark. And because his dad was his dad there was even a trap door that went down into a tunnel that led directly to the house -- the mansion -- that he’d designed and built. It had the personality of both of his dads and Peter absolutely loved it.
“It’s cool, isn’t it?” Tony asked.
“Yeah,” Peter said. “No one will ever suspect that a farmer doesn’t live here.”
Tony ruffled his hair.
It was just a little bittersweet to know that this was all actually happening. His dad and Steve were moving from the tower into this farm. It wasn’t too far out of the city and it was admittedly really nice and quiet out there, but things were going to change soon. Not that Peter would have been around at the tower anyway since he was graduating in a few months and then after this summer it’d be off to college. Columbia. It had been that or NYU -- he’d gotten accepted to both. His dad had questioned his choice to not go to MIT.
“You’d love it there, kid, and it’s a great school and--”
“And it’s not in New York,” Peter had pointed out.
Being in New York meant he could be Spider-Man. He could visit his dads and May. He could hang out with Ned when they had a spot of free time. His relationship with MJ didn’t have to turn long distance seeing as she was going to NYU. Not to mention that he wouldn’t miss out on spending time with his little sister.
Peter hadn’t met Morgana yet, but his dad and Steve had and Peter had just had to look at them to know that they already loved her. And in just a few days she’d be coming home with them.
He followed his dad out of the barn and towards the house. It really was a nice house -- the kind that were on 1000 piece puzzles but that no one ever saw in real life. It was huge but not overwhelmingly so. Steve was standing on the wrap around porch and he grinned at them as they headed over.
“Hey, Joan from the agency just called. They okayed everything. We get to pick her up tomorrow.”
“Really? But she said in three or four days and now—”
“I know,” Steve said.
“Already,” Peter said.
“I -- there’s still so much to do. We don’t even -- we haven’t even furnished this place yet and--”
Steve stepped forward and placed his hands on Tony’s shoulders. “Because we’re not moving yet,” Steve reminded him. “We’ll be at the tower for a few more months. Her room is ready. Everything is ready. You bought her a million things she won’t even need.”
Tony nodded and Peter could tell that he was relaxing, especially when he turned to look at Steve. “She’s going to need everything we got for her.”
Peter met Steve’s eyes and they smiled at each other because they both knew that Tony had gone a little overboard. But they should have known to expect that.
“I can’t wait to meet her,” Peter said and he really couldn’t.
“You’ll love her, Pete,” his dad said.
Peter still remembered the conversation he’d had with the social worker that had come to check out the house. He’d been nervous because he didn’t want to ruin things for his dad and Steve, but the questions had been straight forward and mostly to do with how he felt about the adoption. He felt great about it — he was excited for the new addition to the family. Peter just didn’t know who would be spoiling Morgana the most.
“Hey, do you think we can get a real dog out here? K-9’s going to need a friend,” Peter said. They had plenty of room for one.
“I think your dad wants to get chickens, Pete. It might very well become a menagerie.”
“Just because I think it would be interesting to have a few cows,” Tony said.
“Because Shuri sent you pictures of cows once she heard about the farm,” Steve said.
“Well did you know that there were so many cute cows?” Tony asked. “I think Morgana would appreciate having cows.”
Peter rolled his eyes. “We don’t need cows,” he said. “Morgana certainly doesn’t need cows.”
“Okay. No cows. Maybe. But what about alpacas? At least one? We can name him Gerald.”
Steve looked like he was trying to hold in his laughter.
“But, dad, what if it’s a girl?” Peter asked.
“We can call her Geraldina.”
Peter saw Steve shaking his head, but Peter shrugged his shoulders. “They are kind of cute.”
He would await the day when he arrived at the farm and found an alpaca and some chickens and cows. Maybe it wasn’t a bad idea for his dad to pick up a new hobby, though.
“What about we welcome our -- we welcome Morgana into our lives first and then think about getting a zoo?” Steve asked.
“I am tabling this conversation for later, but I do want to point out that we have the space and the time for it.”
“Sure, honey,” Steve said.
Peter followed Steve inside. It still wasn’t fully furnished but it was kind of cool to actually see it finished after so long. It was different than the tower -- cozier and more homey with touches of tech because what Tony Stark house wouldn’t have that, but it also had a separation from that. It was perfect.
“Hey,” his dad said after a while of walking from empty room to empty room. “You’re really okay with this right?”
“What? You guys moving?”
Tony nodded.
“I am. It’s -- it’s what you guys want and I’ll like coming out here to visit all the time. And I’m excited about Morgana too. It’s -- it’s exciting. You guys deserve this after everything. Our lives are never going to be normal because I have spider powers and Steve is a supersoldier and you’re a genius but this is our family and Morgana is going to grow up with Thor showing up uninvited all the time and you building robots in the barn and maybe some alpacas and cows running around. And we all know I attract danger and trouble no matter where I go so--”
He was thinking back to the European trip. Peter had reluctantly taken his Spider-Man suit with him, but hadn’t intended to use it. His plans had entirely revolved around telling MJ he liked her. Somehow, he had managed to do that, but other things happened too. By the end of it, the world at large knew his identity and not just that -- they knew his father was Tony Stark. Things had settled down and ended fine by the end of it, but it had been rough going for a while and Peter didn’t think he would have handled it as well without his dad and Steve at his side.
Still, at the rate that he was going, Peter expected that if he did end up dorming for school that his roommate might end up being some supervillain. Hell, maybe it would be one of his professors.
“Yeah. Not your finest quality, kid,” his dad said. “Maybe why I don’t like the idea of being too far from you.”
“In a suit, you can get to New York City in about fifteen minutes. Don’t worry. I’m an Avenger.”
His dad sighed. “Yeah, I know. Just, I guess to be honest, I’m a little worried about tomorrow.”
Peter sighed. “You’ve already met her and she likes you and Steve. It’s going to be fine. And Aunt May said you can call her any time for help or babysitting. Not to mention that she’s going to have the best big brother ever so…”
Tony laughed and he pulled Peter into his side. Peter went willingly. Things were going to change over the next few months but none of that was going to matter, not as long as the important things didn’t change. The important things being his family -- new additions and all.

Killian Jones is a wolf shifter without roots, without plans, and without a pack. He’s a rogue, someone humans should avoid and shifters should be wary of given his lineage. But one night years back set him on a path he didn’t realize he was taking, a path leading to a future he is destined for. That future is tied up in one woman – a human named Emma Nolan. Together Emma and Killian will find not only answers, but a love that’s truly fated. But will love be enough to set them free, or will past demons win out in the end? (Answer: love always wins – I am writing this so despite some tiny pockets of angst it’s basically a fluff-filled insta-love fest). Rated M.
A/N: Hey all! So, as promised, we are back with a new chapter (though I am a day later than my usual posting schedule) and this one is arguably the big one. Finally the reveal is here and I have been waiting for it for what feels like forever. It’s going to take a little bit to get there – after all, I can’t just drop the bomb with no ease in, but by the end of the chapter Emma will know the truth and we will all know her reaction. Without giving too much more away, I’ll leave you all to read. Let me know what you think and I hope you all enjoy!
If someone had told Emma even a month ago that she’d willingly walk down the street hand in hand with a man in front of the whole town, she would have called them crazy. That was absolutely not the kind of thing she ever did, but here she was, braving the Fourth of July festivities, proudly holding tight to Killian’s grasp as they made their way down Main Street and over to the park where the town-wide cookout was already in full swing.
“So you’re really sure you want to do this?” Emma asked, teasing Killian when he had made it abundantly clear that this was exactly what he wanted. “It’s not too late to duck out.”
“And miss the chance to turn up with the world’s most beautiful woman on my arm? Never.”
Emma melted into his compliment, despite how over the top it was, and she marveled at how honest he was being and how she couldn’t deny how much he meant the words. They’d been together for a few weeks now, and in all that time Killian bestowed such praise on her constantly. But it never tipped over into the realm of flattery just for flattery’s sake. It was charming, but it was also real, and it left her feeling as beautiful as he believed her to be while also tempting her to say screw it and skip this cookout entirely. The things that she wanted to do with this man were hardly appropriate for this public setting, and if the past few weeks had taught her anything, it was that Emma was a lot less patient than she once thought.
A few weeks – really only two of actually dating – was a very short window to feel this possessive of what they had. Emma was protective of their relationship, and she cherished it far more than a passing fling or ordinary courtship. It felt big and bold, and traditionally, this was the stage of a relationship where people started labeling things, maybe calling themselves boyfriend and girlfriend. But that particular label didn’t seem like enough. Somehow, since meeting Killian, Emma had realized that there was a trivialness to that once aspired to status. It felt like a temporary step before either a couple would break or move on to more. And sure, maybe people dated for years and years without officially taking things further, but in her heart Emma already felt like she and Killian were more.
That feeling was something she’d been clinging to the past few weeks. For all the growing and sharing they were doing together, and for all the time they’d spent in each other’s company (which never did feel like enough), Emma could still feel some boundaries that simply wouldn’t budge, and she wondered why they were up at all. On her end this felt like a given. She was so confident in the two of them, and though they’d never said the words, Emma knew that Killian loved her. He was in love with her, and she felt the exact same way. So what was left between them that was going unsaid? And why did Emma feel like it mattered a whole heck of a lot?
“There’s nothing I wouldn’t give to know your thoughts right now, love,” Killian murmured as they arrived at the park entrance.
There were people milling about, streaming in to get to the party, but Emma and Killian stopped, standing still in the ebb and flow of foot traffic. Emma turned towards him, meeting his stare after he’d made his comment, and she saw in his gaze that he had picked up on everything she was feeling. He might not know exactly what was bothering her, but he knew something was off, and the look in his eyes was so resolute and certain that she knew he was determined to rid her of any burdens she was carrying. That care and love she saw there only made her fall a little bit more in love, but as much as she wanted to tell him, as much as Emma would like to put it all on the table and be honest with him, she knew it wasn’t the time or place. With their luck her friends or her parents would pop up any second, and the last thing she wanted was to tell Killian that she loved him for the first time with an audience.
“Good thinking. Probably best not to have such a conversation where we could be ambushed.”
Emma gaped at him for a moment before succumbing to laughter. He was funny in his delivery, and the humor was undeniable, but it was also eerie how spot on he was. She knew she hadn’t said anything aloud, but he understood her completely anyway. How was that possible? How could any two people be so in tune with each other? And why didn’t she hate it after spending her life trying to maintain her privacy in a small town where privacy was fleeting?
“Are you like a secret mind reader or something?” She asked, raising a brow at him and taking stock of him all over as if trying to find some kind of physical sign that he was telepathic.
“I’m an Emma reader, and I hate to break it to you, love, but you’re somewhat of an open book.”
“I am not,” Emma said, shaking her head though she still found herself smiling all the same. “You can ask anyone. I’ve got a perfect poker face. I’m undefeated at the legion hall charity games – the definition of cool and collected.”
“With everyone else I dare say you are, love. But with me…” Killian’s words trailed off as he stepped closer, his arms wrapping around her and his fingertips leaving blissful zings of awareness where they brushed against her bare skin. “With us, it’s different. We know each other better than we know ourselves. We’ve learned it fast, but still it’s there. Like a language only we speak.”
“And apparently I can’t shut off the transmission,” Emma said, her voice a bit breathier since Killian was so close and she was wrapped up in his scent, and warmth and big strong arms.
“Would you want to if you could?” Killian asked, a bit of concern crossing into his previously relaxed and happy expression. Instantly Emma sought to rectify it, and she did so by answering him honestly.
“No. I love what we have. I wouldn’t want to change it.”
Thoughtfulness colored his features at that, and while it didn’t alarm Emma, it did remind her of her earlier thoughts. Killian was hiding something, something that worried him. There was a secret he was holding onto, presumably something he thought would change what they already had. But even though Emma didn’t know what it could be, she wanted to tell him that it wouldn’t change things. Whatever he was worried about – whatever he deemed necessary to hold back when they’d always been nothing but open – it wouldn’t ruin this, and it was nothing that they couldn’t handle together. She knew that deep down in her soul.
“Knowing you want this and want me is the greatest gift, love, and I fully intend to show you how grateful I am tonight. But right now…”
“Let me guess, incoming?” Emma asked, knowing that for whatever reason, Killian was always able to tell way before she was when someone was approaching to interrupt one of their interludes.
“Aye, love. Don’t worry though, I’ll protect you.”
His whispered words as Elsa and Anna appeared had Emma chuckling softly to herself, and after giving her best friends a hug, she returned to holding Killian’s hand and began to experience this annual party with a totally new view. It was a very different experience to spend the day like this. Of course she and Elsa and Anna had all been coming together for ages, but they knew the routine like the back of their hand. Killian though was a novice still at Storybrooke’s ways and customs, and watching his reactions to all of it and seeing how excited and desirous to participate he was made Emma’s already present love for her town’s antics grow all the more.
“Okay, so we’ve had food, we’ve made the rounds, we kissed the Captain’s wheel…”
“Which I still don’t get to be honest,” Killian whispered low enough so only Emma could hear as Anna went about listing what they’d already done. It was a Storybrooke tradition to kiss the old ship’s wheel statue in the park at this festival every year, but no one really knew why that was or how the tradition started. Seeing Killian’s reaction to it had been hilarious because he seemed to be the only rational one in attendance, but even with the weirdness, he ended up complying. Just the thought of his reaction, however, made Emma laugh, and she muffled the giggle by ducking into him and using him to keep the sound quiet.
“Now the only thing left to do is rumble!” Anna announced gleefully.
“Rumble? Like a fight?” Killian asked, his stance tensing ever so slightly as he moved to bring Emma a bit closer. It was a protective action, one that Emma appreciated though it wasn’t actually needed. She clarified for Anna, speaking in terms an outsider could understand.
“Every year we duke it out at the game tents. It’s a big thing – we play every game and whoever ends with the biggest prize wins,” Emma said, and while she saw that Killian was appeased that there wouldn’t actually be physical violence, he was clearly still concerned about the terminology. Elsa, however, chose this time to cut in.
“But one year when we were kids, the orders got messed up for the game prizes. Emma’s Mom ordered normal fair things like stuffed animals and blow up toys and instead the town got five hundred fake WWE championship belts.”
“You’re kidding,” Killian said, not believing it at all, but then he looked at Emma and his eyes widened. “Seriously?”
“Oh yeah,” Emma replied. “And, never one to let the unexpected cramp her style, Mom really leaned in. Most of us didn’t know anything about professional wrestling -,”
“Heck we still don’t,” Elsa interrupted with a laugh as Emma smiled.
“But all the adults made a really big effort to make it cool for one night so that we wouldn’t be disappointed when all we got was a belt.” Killian’s eyes softened at that and he nodded, silently acknowledging how touching and fun that must have been.
“So to honor that night – and to honor Emma’s Dad’s job, which was just to keep yelling ‘Let’s get ready to rumble!’ the whole time – we call this the rumble.”
The laugh Killian let loose at the story prompted Emma and her friends to laugh as well. It was, after all, a very funny thing, and Emma could still remember her Dad that night. He knew nothing about wrestling, except for some old catch phrase, but he’d done everything in his power to see them all enjoy themselves, and he had definitely succeeded.
“Well, I might not be the best, seeing as I haven’t been to a fair in… I couldn’t even say how long,” Killian admitted. “But if it’s a rumble we’re having, then I’m in.”
“Great!” Anna said gleefully, and her tone was so chipper it spoke to some kind of scheming. Before Emma could rein her in though, she was already presenting her thoughts. “So I’m thinking you versus Elsa. You fight for Emma, Elsa fights for me, winner gets the better unicorn plushie at the end of this.”
“Anna,” Emma said, not even knowing how to proceed. She wanted to tell her friend that was silly and that she didn’t need Killian to prove himself with some dumb fair games, but then he squeezed her hand and she looked back at his smiling face.
“If you’re okay with cheering me on, I think I’ve got this, love.” How could she say no to that? Between the handsome face and the hot as hell accent, lilting in that heated way she loved so dearly, she was helpless to do anything but accept.
From there, a truly impressive ‘rumble’ proceeded. The four of them went to every tent for every game, and it turned out that Elsa and Killian were well matched. Killian, for his part, was excellent at any game requiring strength and precision, while Elsa was amazing at all the games of chance and seeming randomness. She anticipated better than anyone Emma knew, which usually made her the undisputed winner on fair night, but tonight it was neck and neck, until the final game – the ring toss.
“You couldn’t write this better,” Anna said to Emma as they stood off watching Elsa and Killian prepare for the final event.
“Couldn’t write what?” Emma asked, not following.
“The ring toss,” Anna said, matter of factly. Emma blinked, not knowing what her friend was getting at. “Oh come on, Emma. Killian’s going to win you the title with a ring, and it’s only a matter of time before he gives you a very different kind of ring giving you a very different kind of title.”
Realization sunk in after a moment and Emma blushed as she swatted Anna’s arm. “Anna, shh, he’ll hear you.”
“Oh please. That man is in love. L-O-V-E, love,” Anna said in what could best be described as a stage whisper. “There are more than wedding bells in the air, Emma. Don’t think we all can’t see that.”
Emma’s stomach flipped at the thought. It was something that was so out of this world – getting married? That couldn’t possibly be on her radar so soon, and yet it was. This was not the first time she had thought about a future with Killian, and that future, at least the ideal one that her heart liked to surmise about, especially in her dreams, did involve getting married someday. If she were honest with herself, the dreams included that day coming way sooner than it probably should too, but she had never vocalized those wants before and she was worried Killian would hear. For all the good that had blossomed between them these past few weeks, and for as fast as she had grown to love him, Emma couldn’t help feeling like there was one last step to take before the future Anna was hinting at. There was one last wall to conquer – one more thing that lay in their path – and while Emma was working on overcoming it, she wouldn’t rush Killian.
As if he could feel her watching him, Killian chose that moment to glance back at her. She didn’t think that he had heard Anna, but she could feel the intensity of his emotion even from the distance. He was more than clear with his thoughts about her and his care for her, and when he smiled it set the anxiety her friend had just let loose fading away. Emma felt exponentially better, and she offered him her own smile before he turned back to take on the toss.
“I really want this,” Emma whispered, her voice low but her meaning more sincere than nearly any words she’d said aloud before. “I want him.”
“And you have him,” Anna said as she came to take Emma’s hand. “Totally and completely.”
Emma exhaled a deep breath at the words and she smiled again, following Anna’s lead back to Killian and Elsa. They were just about finished with the game. All that was left was one ring on each of their parts. Elsa went first, tossing and almost getting it to stay on the neck of the milk bottle, but it was Killian who was victorious in the end. He cast the ring with a finesse Emma hadn’t expected, and it landed perfectly atop the bottle, making him the victor.
The excitement and the pride that Emma felt in the face of his winning was certifiably over the top. This year’s rumble did not require that she leap into his arms and squeal with the excitement of a kid rather than the woman she was, but Emma didn’t care. She felt so light and free with Killian, and when things were good, she wanted to enjoy how good they really were. Life lived like this was a breath of fresh air, and the cherry on top was when she was back on the ground, still in his arms, and he leaned down to kiss her exactly like the conquering hero did in every romance book she’d ever read.
“Okay, okay we get it. You love each other. No need to give us all a show.”
Anna’s words brought Emma back into the present, and she knew that a blush had crept over her cheeks at the mention of love, but she didn’t back down. Instead she shook her head with feigned censure, and told Anna that she did want a show. If she didn’t she wouldn’t be so nosy all the time.
“Fair point,” Anna confessed with a shrug. “But since I’m turning over a new, more mature leaf, might I suggest hightailing it out of here? A little birdie told me your Mom is like thirty seconds from popping up.”
“Well we could wait…” Killian offered, not wanting to rush Emma, even though he knew by now what her parents’ appearance would mean. They had said hello and spent a little time with them earlier, but a second meeting would no doubt be longer than the first. Her mother would talk both of them to death, and at the same time she’d thoroughly squash the mood that celebratory kiss had just sparked in Emma.
“Or we could save ourselves and run,” Emma said, pulling him along with her as she cast a goodbye over her shoulder to her friends. “Love you guys, see you tomorrow.”
Anna and Elsa waived goodbye after them, and, through some stroke of immense luck, Emma and Killian managed to get out of the fair grounds without being spotted by the leaders of the Nolan clan. The rest of the town certainly saw them, and Emma noticed the looks that each neighbor cast their way. What surprised her though was the softness she saw there – people had largely accepted Killian, and they seemed really happy for the two of them. That acceptance made Emma happy. She didn’t need it, but she was glad for it. It would hopefully make the whole telling him he was the one and convincing him that this was a forever kind of thing that much easier.
“So, now that you’ve gotten me alone, what’s the plan, love?”
Killian’s question rumbled from his chest, washing over Emma with a trickle of seduction. He wasn’t even trying to do anything, but Killian was just too hot for her to fully function. She closed her eyes for a second, grounding herself in this and in him, and then she opened them and told him what she wanted.
“Take me to your place.”
Her request made Killian’s eyes widen, but she knew he wasn’t surprised. Over the last few weeks the heat between them had only been burning hotter and brighter, but despite some kisses that blew her away, and despite the tantalizingly distracting feel of his rough but also gentle touch, Emma and Killian hadn’t taken things to that next step. She’d been ready for it, aching for the chance to be alone with him and make some of her more vivid fantasies real, but Killian had been taking things slowly. Tonight, however, Emma didn’t want slow. She wanted to go all in, and she wanted to now.
“As you wish.”
Emma’s heart thumped loudly in her chest as they walked, hand in hand, from the park where the festivities had been through the town towards his cabin. By the time they reached the woods, Emma’s anticipation was at record levels. Her whole body was swimming with desire, and she could barely contain it. She knew Killian was aware of it too because his jaw had gone hard but his blue eyes were molten every time he looked her way. He seemed seconds away from sweeping her up into his arms and carrying her, and she would have welcomed that, especially in the moment where she got so distracted that her foot caught on a root that was sticking up slightly from the ground below.
Before Emma could hit the earth with a loud and painful thud, Killian had pulled her to him, cradling her in the warm and strong embrace she’d come to love so much. Somehow her back had ended up at his front, but their bodies were aligned perfectly even like this. The breath rushed out of her, and her body had to play catch up for a moment. She had braced herself for a fall, but it simply hadn’t come, and she blinked away the adrenaline before realizing that they were in another stretch of woods she knew very well…
In the moment just before waking, Emma already knew that she was not where she should be. The ground beneath her was hard, though the grass licked lightly at her skin in a soft and pleasing way. The air was too fresh and too pure for her to be at home and in bed, and the smells around her… she was definitely outside, and that meant it had happened again. She’d had the dream, and she’d left the house as she slept, completely unaware of what she was doing.
Blinking until the early morning dawn didn’t hurt her eyes so badly, Emma’s first sight was the canopy of the trees she’d ended up in. They were giant pines, tall and proud and ever growing, and while they would be considered beautiful and tranquil at any other time, right now they spiked only fear in Emma. She was outside again, presumably alone out here in the elements, and she didn’t know how to stop it.
Rising from the ground, Emma noticed how covered she was in dirt. It climbed up her legs from her bare feet, tore at her clothes, and no doubt smudged her face and her neck as it did her hands and arms. She was a mess right now, and the one thing she remembered most from the dream was the howl of a wolf. It was loud, defiant, but also familiar, and Emma could feel it still reverberating through her, as if she herself had made the sound instead of hearing it in a dream.
Making her way through the woods, trying to remain unseen by anyone who might happen to be out at this ungodly hour, Emma tracked back through the dream. The foundations were the same. It started with that night at the hospital. Two wolves – one good, one bad, fighting over her. She was trapped, she was scared, but then she wasn’t. The midnight one seemed to care for her, to protect her, and then the dream would morph. Suddenly she wasn’t in Boston anymore, she was in the woods, these woods.
She also wasn’t Emma anymore at this point, at least not really. Her point of view was too low, her movements so different than if she’d been walking or running on her own. She was aware of so much – too much – and the darkness of the world did nothing to deter her. She could see everything, feel everything, and she was totally in control. She’d made her way through her favorite groves, tracking and running, and then at the end, she’d made it to the river and she looked into the water only to see another wolf. This one was so different – a pale, almost white coat making the beast look amazing and other worldly, and it was this animal that howled, this revelation that pushed her mind from sleep to wake.
Even now, Emma didn’t know what to make of all of this. Why was there a new wolf when she’d been battling familiar ones all this time? And what did it mean that the wolf had been where she had been? Doctor Hopper would call this projection. Emma knew he’d explain it away as more stress, likely over choosing which college she wanted to go to, not that her parents were going to let her go. With all of this happening who could blame them? Emma was crazy, really and truly crazy and there was no hope of her ever being normal or accepted when this was her deep dark secret…
“Emma?” Killian’s concerned voice broke the spell of her remembrance, and Emma shook her head slightly before looking back at him. She could see in his eyes so much love, and suddenly she felt an urge, an urge to tell him something she’d never even told her very best friends. Something her parents knew, but didn’t really know, since she’d kept parts from them and from Archie. It was a moment of truth, one final test, and Emma hoped that maybe it would be the thing he needed to come forward with his own secret.
“I used to have these crazy dreams, right when we got back from Boston,” she began, continuing to walk through the copse of trees towards his cabin with his hand in hers. “They were wild and exhausting. I’d sleep ten hours but feel like I never went to bed. They were all so vivid in the moment too. One second I was living this undeniable double life. It was almost more real than the world I was living in, but when I woke up I’d start to forget. The pieces would slip away, but the feelings still remained. The doctors said it was stress, but I would - I mean I used to… sleep walk.”
Emma expected Killian to ask for more, but when she looked back up at him he remained quiet. His eyes were fixed on her, his expression unreadable, but she felt a silent urging from him for her to continue so she did.
“The walking was tamer at first. I’d wake up in the kitchen or the back yard. Still close to home, but definitely not where I should be. But by the end of my senior year it was bad… really bad. My parents had to lock every door, install an alarm in a town with virtually no crime, and keep an eye out. They took shifts of who would sleep, and sometimes I still got out. I have no idea how, and they didn’t either.”
“And when you got out, where did you go?” Killian asked, his voice even despite the fact that she was telling him this alarming bit of back-story.
“The woods. Always the woods.”
She gave him some more details of those morning memories. They were hard to speak about, mostly because they were so radically out of the norm, and by the time they’d gotten to his house Emma was starting to feel like maybe this was too much. She hadn’t said any of this aloud in so long and it sounded even more bizarre to her now than it did then, but luckily Killian didn’t seem off put in any way. The only thing he could see on her face was concern for her safety and something else that surprised her. It was almost like he didn’t think these dreams were that insane, and she wondered how he could be so calm in the face of something so strange and wild.
“God, Emma, that sounds… frightening and more than a little scary.”
“It was in a way,” Emma admitted. “But it wasn’t where I woke up that scared me, it was the part when I was awake again. I always had this sinking feeling that I was forgetting something, something really important. It was like something wasn’t right in the light of day. Something was really really wrong, and… well I mean it wasn’t. Everything was fine, and then my birthday came, and I don’t know, I felt a lot better suddenly. I was a bit more settled than I had been. The dreams didn’t come as much, and now when they do it’s just a dream. No random relocations thrown in the mix.”
“That’s good to hear,” Killian said, his hands running over her as much for her comfort as for her his own. “I hate to think of you out in the world and without protection. If anything ever happened to you…”
“I’m fine,” Emma promised, trying to convince him that she was in fact all right as they took a seat on his couch. “I’m not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me.”
Pulling him down for a kiss, Emma was so relieved when Killian kissed her back. He might have felt a bit withdrawn when she’d made the confession about her dreams, but he was with her now in an undeniable way. The only problem was, that when they finally came back for air, the walls had come up again. He was sitting here, holding her close and doing that thing where he subtly protected her from the whole entire world, but she could see the difference and feel it too and it was terrible. She hated it. Simply hated it.
“I shouldn’t have said all that, should I?” Emma asked, her heart hurting in her chest at the realization that she might just have fucked this up. “I messed up.”
“No, Emma. You’re perfect, and I’m glad you told me. Truly I am,” he assured her and Emma smiled at the words, knowing he meant them even if he was still being weird. “You know how I feel about you. In your heart you know, but I haven’t said it aloud yet because… because I’ve been keeping something from you.”
Emma’s heart constricted in her chest even though she had known this was coming. Killian had a secret, something he’d been guarding all this time, and if she knew him as much as she thought she did, it was something he’d probably never told anyone at all. Yet even with the sadness she felt that he had kept something from her, it wasn’t distrust that settled within her. She only wished to help him and to alleviate his pain. Whatever it was, he was so worried and she couldn’t do anything to help until he told her. She moved closer, her hand coming to rest over his heart, which was beating so fast it must be painful, and then she made him a promise she knew he had to hear.
“Whatever it is we can face it together. It’s you and me, okay?”
A moment passed where Killian didn’t say anything. He seemed caught up in something, a memory if she wasn’t mistaken. For a moment it was like he wasn’t there, but Emma instinctively reached out to him, taking his hand. When they touched he was instantly back with her, and his eyes shone bright with a need to be with her.
“You and me, right?”
“Always.”
Hearing him say that made Emma breathe easier. Whatever was happening in his mind right now, there was no hiding the truth, and Killian still wanted this. But as much as she had been willing to give him time before, Emma’s patience had grown frail. She felt like this weight he was carrying was the only thing left between them, and she wanted so badly for him to let it go. If he did they’d be free to just… be, and as strange as that sentiment was, Emma’s instincts told her that they needed that. She knew he wasn’t going anywhere, but whatever secret he was harboring, he needed to share, not just for her sake, but for his as well.
“There’s something about me you don’t know, love. I’m…”
Killian trailed off, and Emma knew that they had finally reached the moment of truth. She had literally no idea where this was going. Killian had kept this guarded for weeks. It was the only part of him she hadn’t had access to, and she needed it even though she felt a tiny bit of fear. Why was he so hung up on this? Was it really so bad? She just wouldn’t know until he said something.
“You’re…” she prompted, her eyes searching his face which was clouded with worry. Then his words came so quickly she almost didn’t hear them.
“I’m a shifter.”
“A shifter,” Emma parroted, and though she didn’t understand what that was, the words came out less as a question than a statement. The term sparked the remembrance she had back at the clinic a few weeks ago, but she shook her head, knowing that couldn’t have been real. It must mean something. Was this a fetish or something? No, it wasn’t. It couldn’t be. She’d have sensed that red flag early on. But whatever it was, this part of her, deep down inside was suddenly excited and elated for now explainable reason. “I don’t know what that means.”
“It means… actually, it’s probably better if I show you.”
Taking her hand in his Killian brought Emma to sit on the couch in his living room. It was a strange thing to do, but Emma knew it was because whatever this was, it was so big he thought she might fall from the shock of it. Meanwhile the word kept bouncing around in her head. Shifter. Shifter. Shifter. She tried to fathom what this was, and if her old, probably made up memory could be accurate, but then she was distracted by Killian moving back across the room and pulling the shirt he was wearing over his head. Emma was not expecting him to strip down in front of her, and despite this being a very serious moment her eyes honed in on his muscled physique. A thrill coursed through her as more and more of him was revealed, and when he was finally down to just his briefs she found her words.
“Killian, what are you…?”
She trailed off when Killian took a deep, steadying breath and then, well, shifted. Like shifted from a man into a wolf in a split second. It was the craziest thing she’d ever seen. One second he was there, for a fleeting moment there was this transition that happened so quick you would blink and you missed it, and then there was this animal – a huge, black wolf, standing where Killian had just been. The animal was poised and powerful, and then his eyes opened and Emma instantly recognized them and him too.
“Holy shit! Holy shit you’re a wolf!” she said, her voice coming out harsh with the emotion of the realization. “Killian, you’re my wolf! Oh my God Killian, you’re my wolf! The wolf from the alley… the wolf from my dreams…”
Killian let out a low whine in his animal form, and though Emma wasn’t exactly fluent in large, wild canine speak, she knew it was a signal that she was right. It completely amazed her that any of this was happening. Now she knew why Killian had her sit down for this reveal. She was dizzy from the shock of it, but she also had this intrinsic need to get up and be close to him. She was fascinated by his coat and color, by how large his animal was, and of course the fact that he could turn into an animal at all. But before she asked those questions, and before she addressed how the hell any of this was possible, she moved across the room to where he was and hesitantly reached out to touch him.
When her fingers made contact with the warmth of his fur, her whole body filled with the most wonderful feeling. It was somehow more consuming than their first time meeting, and finally she knew that the last piece of the puzzle was solved. This was the secret Killian was hiding. This was the truth he’d had to keep hidden, and God what a beautiful, amazing, and magical truth it was. Emma’s eyes actually misted up at the fierceness of all the she felt, but she kept the tears at bay to try and speak her thoughts aloud.
“I don’t understand how this can be real. You’re a wolf – sorry, a shifter – and you saved me. Back in Boston…”
Now Killian did return to himself and Emma jumped at the transformation, more from surprise than fear. No, there was nothing like fear here at all. She felt completely safe with Killian still, but she hoped he would fill in the blanks so her mind could truly comprehend all she’d just seen.
“Aye, I did, love.” She knew it was him, but it still felt good to hear him say it. So all this time she hadn’t been crazy. There was a wolf, and somehow, someway, he’d found his way back to her.
“Wow. That’s so… crazy,” she said for lack of a better descriptor. “What are the odds?”
“I’d say about one in a billion,” he replied and she laughed, the sound pitched higher than normal from the bevy of emotion. Killian, for his part, stepped closer to her, testing the waters but finding Emma didn’t need any space. She moved towards him too, and reveled in the feel of his arms around hers.
“And you found me again. How did you do that? Did you track me or something?”
“No, Emma. It was all instinct. I had the urge to come to Maine for years now, but I finally gave in after resisting so long. I didn’t realize what we were to each other when we first met, but my wolf knew subconsciously you were out there somewhere in the world, calling to me.”
“And what are we to each other?” She asked with a breathless sense of wonder. She knew that her tone spoke to a true yearning to know, and that she was holding nothing back. Right now she was an open book, but it felt only right since he was just as open with her.
“We’re what’s called fated mates, love. In my world it’s normal. All shifters have their perfect partner, their other half, and you, Emma Nolan, are mine, just as I am yours. Bonds between humans and shifters… well I’ve never heard of one happening, but it could be the reason you had those dreams and felt those things. It could be our bond, just working in more mysterious ways.”
“Oh thank God,” Emma said with genuine relief finally it was Killian’s turn to look confused. He must not understand her thoughts on this, so she tried to explain them. “It’s just I’m totally crazy about you. I wanted you from the first second I saw you and I feel like you’re the one. It’s good to know that’s real. It’s not just my mind playing tricks on me.”
“It’s real,” Killian murmured, his hand coming to cup her cheek, sending a zing of awareness through her already sensitive flesh. “It’s the realest thing I’ve ever known, the surest love that can ever be found.”
“Love?” Emma asked and Killian nodded.
“Love. I love you, Emma. For now and always. For this life and every other, I love you.”
Hearing that was the most remarkable thing that had ever happened to her. Knowing that she and Killian were destined to be together was amazing, but to hear that he loved her… it just filled her so completely with joy that she was at a loss for words. She jumped further into his arms, wrapping herself around him as she kissed him with all the passion that she had. He mirrored those feelings and that desire so perfectly too. They were wholly connected and on the same page and Emma had never felt better in all her life. She was finally alive, finally getting the chance to know the best that happiness had to offer, and she never wanted to let go. But of course, ever the responsible and reasonable one, Killian realized there was still more to be said. Before they could get too carried away, he pulled back, and when she looked at his cerulean eyes, she saw he still had things to explain, things she needed to know.
The story of his life, as a shifter and as a man, came easily then. Killian let it all out, every last part, leaving no detail unaddressed. Emma listened to everything he outlined for her about his past losses and heartaches and his life as a shifter. He talked about the pull of the full moon each month and the mating bond that would come when they finally came together.  He talked more about shifter culture and the devotion he’d always have to her and the family they might one day make together. Then he explained how their case was one that he never imagined possible – there were no known cases of shifters and humans being fated pairs, but that didn’t make him any less sure. He showed her his mark and she in turn showed him where hers had appeared, at her hip. She wrote it off as weird reaction to something that would fade away in time, but then she looked at where she’d touched him, and she marveled at their perfect set of markings.
“Wow… just… wow,” Emma said, smiling to herself as she continued to hold onto him. “Wait, you just told me you’re a lone wolf now but you called it something else…”
“A rogue,” Killian replied and he watched as a connection formed in Emma’s mind.
“That’s what Graham called you that day at the diner… oh my God, Graham has to be a shifter, right?”
“A wolf, like me,” Killian confessed, sending Emma’s mind in a dozen directions. How could he have hidden it? Who else knew? Then Killian dropped another bomb she never expected. “He and Tink are the only other shifters in the direct vicinity.”
“Oh my God Tink too?” Emma asked, her eyes widening. “That’s so cool! Is she a wolf also?”
“A lynx,” Killian said, before explaining to Emma that there were dozens of shifter species the world over, some more rare than others.
“I can’t believe you guys manage to keep it a secret…” Emma said, but then her stomach clenched as she thought back to that memory. It had to be real and not a dream like she thought, and that, given everything Killian had said about rules and the council, was not a good thing. “But Killian, I think my parents know. I mean they might… I have this memory of a mountain lion at the clinic and my Mom saying the word so… maybe?”
“I don’t know about your mother, love…” Killian left the rest unsaid.
“But my Dad knows, doesn’t he?” Emma didn’t need to ask. His face said everything, and it also said he felt terrible not coming right out and saying so himself.
“I think it’s best to ask him yourself.”
“God this is all so much. I never imagined this, but somehow I feel like I always knew. Is that normal?”
“It’s our mating bond,” Killian informed her. “It’s strong already, and it will grow even stronger if you choose to be mine in every way.”
“Oh I’m definitely choosing you,” Emma said, completely sure of herself and Killian actually hummed out a sound of approval, that sent waves of pleasure through her. Holy crap, that was hot. Was that a shifter thing? Or just a man who really really wanted her to love him? “I love you, Killian, and I want this. More than anything.”
“That makes two of us, love. But this is fast, especially given human custom. What I’ve told you tonight is a lot to process and I need you to be sure. There’s no going back once a mating bond has been sealed so we can wait as long as you need. The full moon this month is tomorrow, but I would wait forever for you.”
“And if I don’t want to wait?” Emma asked, her heart pounding so loudly at even the thought of mating with him. She wanted it so badly, but she also felt the severity of his words. This was a huge step and an even bigger commitment, and that was something to at least sleep on for one night.
“I will always do everything in my power to see you happy, Emma. You have my word on that.” She nodded, glad for his loyalty and devotion that he made apparent with every word and touch and look he sent her way.
“I think I need to talk to my parents,” Emma confessed after a few moments of internal musing. “Or at least my Dad. But I do want this, Killian. Nothing you told me tonight changes how I feel. I knew that I would love you forever before I knew everything, and I still feel that way. I’ll always feel that way.”
“I trust you, Emma. More than I can say. If you say you’re ready then I’ll believe you, but have a night to think on it. Tomorrow if you feel the same, you will find me and we’ll be together, and if not I’ll still be here. I’m not going anywhere.”
“Let me guess, this is the part where you say goodnight,” Emma said, sighing in a dramatic way they were both used to by now. He was ever the gentleman, and though she knew they could spend the night together and not go too far, Killian would never dream of attempting such a feat. “There isn’t anything I can say to convince you otherwise is there?”
“Not tonight, love. I know it’s not easy, but it’s how it has to be. I can’t trust myself not to take all I want. I’m only so strong.”
“I get it,” Emma acknowledged. “I don’t love it, but I get it.”
“Soon enough it’ll be tomorrow,” Killian said, but then he tilted his head and adjusted his words. “I lied. It’ll never be soon enough. I want you every second of every day.”
Her heart melted at that and Emma pulled him in for another kiss, this one soft but slow and languid. It was peaceful but resiged, and still she hoped he could feel her love in it, because she really did love him. So so much.
“Until tomorrow then,” Emma said, trying to capture his slight lilt and Killian laughed shaking his head.
“Uh, no, love. If you think I’m letting you walk alone at night you have another think coming. I’ll see you home and safe, just as I always do.”
And with that, the two of them set out back to Emma’s house, where they did, regrettably part ways. But though she had so much more to consider and to talk about with her father, Emma knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that tomorrow they’d come together for real. It was time for them to be one – to be mated as he called it – and as she fell asleep that night, Emma’s dreams were filled with the magic Killian brought into her life, and hopeful visions of what might be when they were truly and totally together at last.
Post-Note: So there we have it – Emma now knows about shifters and true mates and pretty much everything. I have purposefully left some vagueness about how much of Killian’s past he has talked about though, mostly because the flashbacks haven’t revealed it yet. Regardless, next chapter will be important because it’s from Emma’s POV. She is going to confront her father and once she has all the info (which she, and we, definitely do not have) she will make her choice. Hope that you guys enjoyed the chapter and would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much for reading and have a great rest of your weekend!

What Lay Beyond- Chapter 1
Character Pairing: Steve x Bucky
Word Count: 1202
Chapter synopsis: Bucky has just returned from Wakanda and adjusts to life in the compound.
Tumblr media
Chapter 1
The breeze was cool on Bucky’s face as he sat by the lake, taking in the beauty of the trees and light glancing off of the water. It had only been a couple days since he’d left Wakanda, and though he would never stop marveling at the grandeur of the glittering city and grassy plains, Bucky felt grounded, felt like he was finally home. Maybe it was because he was finally close to Steve again, free of the worry of being hunted and was safe, or maybe it was the familiarity of the New York landscape. Whatever it was, Bucky felt at ease on the bench overlooking the compound’s lake. He was watching a hawk circling trees in the distance when he heard footsteps crunching softly on the gravel behind him.
“Hey, Buck,” came Steve’s low voice, warm and inviting.
“Steve,” Bucky greeted, turning to face Steve with a soft smile. “It’s good to see you, buddy.”
“You too, it’s been too long.” Steve reached out his hand, pulling Bucky up into a tight hug. Bucky leaned into Steve, the gratitude and happiness of being back with his best friend washing over him and leaving his legs weak. They hadn’t had a moment like this since before the war, when Steve was smaller and Bucky wasn’t broken. Steve pulled back, hands on Bucky’s shoulders holding him an arm’s length away, blue eyes searching his face.
“How you feeling, Buck? You’re you? All you again?”  Steve’s words were cautious, hesitant, as if not wanting to poke too hard. “I mean they said-”
“I’m okay, Steve. I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same again, but I’m okay,” Bucky offered, a reassuring smile on his face. He felt okay, felt the most whole he’d felt in decades, but the memories of what he did haunted him from time to time. But Steve didn’t need to know that. So Bucky just smiled and began walking toward the compound.
Steve followed, keeping silent for a few seconds, the only sound the crunching of the gravel underneath their feet.
“When did you get in? You weren’t supposed to leave for a few more weeks. I would have been here but Fury sent me out to deal with some rogues,” Steve apologized.
“Uh, yesterday, I think?” The last couple days were a haze for Bucky, a whirlwind of movement, flight, and people rushing him around, checking him over and asking him questions. The Winter Soldier was back from rehab and was the talk of the compound. He hadn’t had a moment to himself until he escaped to the lake this afternoon. “I would have called, but you know, no phone.”
This earned Bucky a wry smile, and Bucky soaked in Steve completely for the first time. He was casual, in a black bomber jacket and fitted jeans, blond hair pushed back out of his face in a way that made Bucky’s heart skip a beat. He looked good, even just coming back from a mission. Steve smirked a bit when he realized Bucky was still looking at him and Bucky turned his gaze back to the ground, blushing and embarrassed.
“Uh, so anyway, Bruce said dinner’s gonna be around six. Something about grilled fish?”
Steve shot him a funny look, “Banner’s cooking? Also, how do you know Bruce?”
Bucky shrugged, “Dunno, he’s been cooking since I’ve gotten here. He was actually the first one besides a doctor to try and talk to me.” He paused, thinking about that for moment, thinking about how odd it was for someone to willingly interact with him, the notorious Winter Soldier. Bucky, not Winter Soldier, he reminded himself.  “I think he sympathizes with me or something.”
Steve said nothing, contemplating as they reached the back entrance of the compound. The doors swung open and the pair was greeted by J.A.R.V.I.S..
“Welcome back, Captain. Good evening, Sergeant. Dr. Banner said that dinner will be served at 6.”
“Thanks, J.A.R.V.I.S.. Have you seen Tony? I have a few ideas to run past him,” Steve said.
“Mister Stark is out with Ms. Potts, but will be back in the morning. Would you like me to inform him to meet with you once he returns?”
“Yes, please. It isn’t urgent, though, so whenever is fine.”
They continued walking through the compound, transitioning from the corporate area to the residential wing where everyone lived. It was all new and strange to Bucky, the generous amount of room he had to roam. There were no restraints on where he could go, and though the constant eyes following him around the building (including J.A.R.V.I.S.’) unnerved him a bit, he felt free. He was still getting turned around in the vast maze of hallways, so he let Steve lead the way to the kitchen and lounge area. Steve didn’t attempt to make small talk along the way, a tiny thing Bucky appreciated. Finally, they reached the lounge, filled with the fragrance of cooking food. Bruce was scurrying from stove to counter, attempting to chop vegetables and grill the fish simultaneously.
“Steve!” Bruce roared when he caught sight of them in the adjacent lounge. “Glad you’re back in one piece! Fury was talking about sending in some backup for you, but I see you’ve handled it.”
“It was no big deal, they talked a bigger game than they played. I didn’t know you cooked, Banner,” Steve teased.
“Just started! Tony thought it may be a good- ah- stress reliever for me,” Bruce explained, looking like he didn’t really care to explain more. Steve got the hint.
“Well, it smells great. We’ll be in the lounge if you want any help.”
Bruce gave them a small smile and went back to his juggling act. With that, Steve and Bucky settled into plush armchairs. The comfort was also new, completely different to the cots and huts he had grown used to in Wakanda, different from the only chair Bucky knew when he was the Winter Soldier, where he was tortured, where they took his mind and twisted it to pieces, where-
“Bucky. Bucky?” Steve’s concerned face focused in front of Bucky. “You alright? You zoned out there for a minute.”
Bucky shook his head to rid his mind of the quickly intruding thoughts, clearing his throat before replying. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.”
“If you’re sure,” Steve studied his face for a moment before continuing, “It’s good to finally see you again, Buck. I know it’s probably weird, being here with all these new people, but they’re all really great. You’ll love them. Plus, I think Sam is flying in later this week. You guys seemed to be hitting it off at the airport.”
“If you count fighting together as ‘hitting it off’, then sure,” Bucky chuckled softly.
“It counts for something,” Steve smiled a bit, tilting his head so that the slanting sunlight caught his eyes just right. He was just so damn pretty. Always had been. After all these years, Bucky thought his heart would have forgotten to flutter at the sight of Steve’s face or flip when that deep voice addressed him, but apparently no amount of conditioning or freezing could steal that feeling from Bucky’s chest. It seemed like an eternity since they had been together, and Bucky knew they were finally home.

I have a good chunk of information regarding the first two acts of Endgame:
Unsure what happens past this point.”

Part of the Family
Prompt: Christmas Eve
Characters: Reader, Bruce Banner, the rest of the Avengers and other Marvel characters
Warnings: A cliffhanger, kinda
Word Count: 1156 words
A/N: This was written for Kari ( @until-theend-oftheline ) and Ida ( @sebs-potato ) 12 Marvelous Days of Christmas Challenge. It is thought as a series, the eleventh part to ‘A Very Marvelous Christmas’, but each part can be read as a stand-alone. Most of the fics are going to be platonic/friendship. Feedback is really appreciated, I’d love to hear what you think of it!
Tumblr media
Christmas Eve in the Avenger’s facility was as busy as any other household. Excitement buzzed through the air, conversation flowed easily, and the whole atmosphere was downright festive. It was what anyone would expect Christmas to be as part of a huge family. Christmas carols were being played softly, as background music, throughout the whole complex, and lights and ornaments adorned every place in the building.
The only place that remained non-Christmas-y was the laboratory, where Y/N had been spending her time for the past few hours. It had been fine while it was just the team enjoying their Christmas Eve together, but then, the rest of the guests started arriving. Pepper, Happy, Clint’s family, Maria, Fury… It was a full-out early Christmas celebration, including the distant members of the odd family. The tradition was to have dinner together and, when the clock finally hit midnight, when it was finally Christmas, they would exchange the gifts.
It wasn’t that Y/N didn’t enjoy having the others there. She cared for them as well, and she had always gotten along with everyone. They weren’t the problem, not exactly. But seeing everyone laughing and getting together in small groups, she couldn’t help but feel a little lonely. And she knew she could go up to any of them and join them, but she didn’t want to feel like she was intruding, so going to the lab had been the best next thing; at least better than going to her room, like an antisocial.
She was head-deep into her and Bruce’s notes about some project they had been working on for weeks, one that they had put on hold for the season, when the glass door opened. Bruce smiled as he saw her sitting down and staring hard at the several papers scattered on the desk. He approached her, as quietly as he could, and placed a hand over the papers, causing Y/N to jump in surprise.
“Bruce.” she greeted, “Why aren’t you there with the rest?”
“Why aren’t you?” he shot back.
“Oh, you know… Just decided to have a look at the notes, see if we had overlooked or missed something.”
“On Christmas Eve?”
“That’s never stopped us before.” she mentioned with a tired smile, “How did you know I was here?”
“Nat went to your room first and she didn’t find you there, so I thought I would find you moping here.” Bruce explained.
“I’m not moping. I’m just spending some time down here. It’s really been a while, with all the Christmas errands and everything.”
“You’re here distracting yourself.” he pointed out.
“Getting some work done.” she corrected back.
“Are we suddenly so terrible that you can’t even stand to hang out with us?” Bruce chuckled, “Not even on Christmas Eve?”
“No, of course not. That’s not it at all.”
“But it is him, isn’t it?”
“Not entirely.” Y/N said truthfully, “I just felt a bit lonely back there.”
“So it’s him.”
“Not only him, Bruce.” Y/N groaned softly, “Even before we started dating, I had Allison here with me, every Christmas. Now with both of them gone, out there with the rest of the crowd just feels… a bit lonely.”
“I get what you mean.” Bruce shot her an understanding look, placing a hand gently on one of her shoulders, “We all miss her too. And I’m certain they’ll be back soon. But while they’re gone, we can’t have another one of us missing.”
Y/N grinned, “I’m guessing Nat sent you to get me.”
“Actually, they all did.”
“They did?”
“Of course.”
A warm feeling spread through her chest. She was never one to doubt her friends, but she guessed that now that they had their other guests over at the facility, they would be too busy with them to notice her absence, and she didn’t want to bring down anyone’s mood. Her eyes shone, and a few tears formed at the corners of them, as she looked at Bruce with a grateful expression on her face.
“What, you still don’t believe us when we say you’re one of ours?” Bruce tried to lighten her mood.
Y/N hastily wiped her eyes as she giggled softly under her breath, “It’s not that, I know this is where I belong, with the lot of you.” she tried to explain, “But it was still touching to hear that.”
“Come on.” he offered her his hand, helping her stand up, “Food’s getting cold, and some of them might not be that happy to see you if you delay the Christmas dinner.”
She laughed heartily as she followed Bruce out of the lab and towards the dining room. They finally arrived at the room where everyone was reunited, and she was welcomed with familiar faces and warm hugs, all of them making her feel like part of the family. Even if the room was vastly large and was adequate for them on a normal occasion, now with everyone else there, it was filled to the brim, but not to the point where she felt it was suffocating, no, but to the point where it felt cozy and warm, even if outside the weather was relentless. After greeting everyone once again, she took her usual seat in between Steve and Nat at the table. Easy conversation soon filled the table as they all took places, and the ones that didn’t fit, took over the conjoined living room as well. Y/N looked around and smiled, finally feeling truly happy. It was almost the perfect Christmas Eve.
Two hours later, after the dinner had ended and everyone had their stomachs full and satisfied, some of their guests started filling out of the building, while others decided to stay for the gift exchange. Y/N watched with a soft smile as Clint’s kids ripping apart the Christmas wrappers as they opened their presents, with pure glee on their faces. She took a sip of the mug of hot chocolate Wanda had prepared, this time for everyone, knowing that she had to take a rest from the alcoholic drinks Tony had been offering her the whole night. Her fingers curled around the mug, cherishing the warm feeling spreading on her skin, and she took a gulp again, when suddenly, a cold breeze passed through the room and the sound of the front door closing made her ears perk up. If someone else had just left, she hadn’t noticed it.
Y/N straightened a bit her position on one of the couches, straining to hear what was happening exactly. Above the noise and chatter of the room, she could just make out the sound of a pair of heavy footsteps, but nothing that could reveal the person’s identity. It was clear, though, as the person stepped through the doorway, and everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at him.
His voice was raspier than usual, but his million-kilowatt smile didn’t change, “I hope I’m not too late.”

Ranking Video Games Played in 2018 But Less Detailed Because of Procrastination
Starting this in the evening on the 31st, so let' see if I even get this done in time. Normally I start more ahead of time, and provide seperate detailed post for each game in my list. Initially I wasn't planning on making a list at all this year since I played very few 2018 releases. But then I realized not only that I played more than I thought, but that the non-2018 games I played for the first time this year deserve some love as well.
I conveniently played ten games this year, so here is the ranking of my top ten games:
10. Marvel Puzzle Quest (Mobile)
Tumblr media
This game is garbage, and I play it every day. It's a Match-3 puzzle game, which I somehow never played until this year. And it's on mobile and with a Marvel flair to give it an edge, plus a Gacha mechanic for longevity and scum.
Pros
The actual puzzle gameplay is fine. I have no other Match-3 to compare it to besides Puzzles and Dragons, which I tried out around the same time solely due to Persona 5 characters being in it. And I enjoyed Marvel more. You can only move each gem one space rather than across a line or column, or straight up anywhere like in Puzzles and Dragons. But there is no time limit, which I really appreciate.
I like a lot of Marvel characters, so I don't mind them as the rewards. Each one also has different Abilities which make a bigger difference in the gameplay than I initially expected. I unfortunately do not have Ms Marvel, Gwenpool, or Silk yet, but I do have Spider-Man.
Speaking of, the free characters they give you are pretty decent. Within the first few missions, you will come out with Spider-Man, Iron Man, Storm, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor. You can also get Juggernaut and Venom with only slightly more effort.
The game has thus far been very generous with the gacha resource, but I can't comment on the actual pull rates (which may be where they really make their money).
Cons
You may get a lot of chances to pull, but you have a limited barrack you can recruit characters into. And the resource to increase slots is VERY slow. Which means you could potentially pull a great character, but either wait a few weeks to earn enough coins to buy a new barrack spot, remove one of your existing characters, or give them money. And if you wait more than a few weeks, your un-recruited character will be automatically "sold" for resources. I've lost one or two characters to this already. At this point the smart thing seems to be to never pull unless you have open slots, since your recruitment resource does not expire (that I'm aware of).
The difficulty is all over the place. Even the so-called "Prologue" has unusual difficulty spikes in terms of enemy levels.
The leveling system is also garbage in general. You need duplicates of characters to level up, but higher rank characters start at higher levels. Which means even though I pulled and merged like 6 Iron Man, the single 3-star Dr Octopus is significantly stronger with no effort.
Final Thoughts
This game is garbage, and I will continue to play it.
9. Fire Emblem Heroes (Mobile)
Tumblr media
Not long ago, Fire Emblem Heroes was one of my favourite games. But the game fell so far in 2018, perhaps outlining the heightened speed of a gacha game's life-cycle.
Pros
They started adding alts of characters that were not from Awakening or Fates. It's not exactly good that we're getting so many alts, but at least they're not all Camilla or Xander.
The new Aether Raids mode is legitimately good. It allows you to create your own mini-maps with different structures and traps, and play against other players. You win a new resource called Heroic Grails, which you can use to summon otherwise limited-time free characters like those from Grand Hero Battles, or the Tempest Trials. I should specify this lets you select characters, not go into a random gacha system. You want more of Joshua? No problem, just select him from the list and hand of the Grails, and you've got him. A lot of characters I like fall into this category, so I especially appreciate it. The actual mode of fighting in user-created maps is also fun.
Book 2 of the story had some good moments early on, and I liked some of the new characters. Said new characters were also added into the summon pool, and not as limited-time units either.
A lot of older characters got new weapon refinements to help them keep up with the cast slightly. Some of these are only okay, but some have been amazing. Still waiting for my man Matthew to get one.
Also this one is kind of cheating since it didn't happen yet, but we are confirmed to finally be getting Laguz (the beast units from the Tellius games) in 2019, which I am very excited for.
Cons
After a decent start, Book 2's story fell into disarray. A comically bland villain was the worst offender, feeling like an OC a child came up with that kept getting sudden new powers for no reason.
Said main villain is also the focal point of the powercreep in the game this year. The absurdity of how good 2018 units are compared to before is frustrating, and I say that as someone who doesn't particularly care about ranking. A lot of these new units and skill sets are just plain not fun to fight against.
Outside of Aether Raids, the game felt pretty stale in terms of having things to do, and I simply found myself far less interested.
Final Thoughts
Laguz will keep my interest for at least some of 2019, but I see myself playing this far less next year. And with a new real Fire Emblem game coming out, I may leave this game entirely.
8. Final Fantasy Record Keeper (Mobile)
Tumblr media
This is an unusual one because I didn't play this game much this year. For a few months, I didn't even bother logging in. And 90% of the time I do log in, I just grab the daily rewards and leave. So how did this beat Marvel Puzzle Quest and Fire Emblem Heroes?
Pros
This game is absurdly generous with resources. Keeping in mind this is a gacha game way past it's prime, and being cannibalized by its own parent company through other newer Final Fantasy mobile games, Record Keeper has been trying very hard to keep people playing. Even as someone who barely plays, I am flush with good resources. Enough so that, if I get interested enough, I could probably catch up to the meta-game.
The game has also continued its policy of "characters are free, the gacha is for equipment" that I love. I have no trouble getting characters I want (new ones I liked added this year include Marche from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Sora and Riku of Kingdom Hearts).
The gacha itself is also generous, with multiple event banners that guarantee at least one 5-star for every 11-pull. I wish other gacha games were this generous.
It also keeps the great aesthetic and soundtrack that got me into the game.
Cons
I've played it so much over the years that it's not super fun, but I appreciate it's there for me and doesn't feel like scum.
Final Thoughts
Thank you for doing a gacha game well, Square-Enix.
7. Mighty Switch Force (3DS)
Tumblr media
Though I got this years ago in a Humble Bundle, it wasn't until one bored weekend this summer that I actually tried it out Wayforward's other first-party game. The Mighty Switch Force DLC trailer for Shantae: Half Genie Hero also helped.
This is an interesting little arcade action/puzzle hybrid that's a little unusual. It puts you into different areas where you have to use the main gimmick of moving things into and out of the foreground along with other puzzle mechanics to find and arrest some escaped criminals.
Pros
The main mechanic of moving objects forward and backward is pretty fun, and while it's been occasionally seen in other games it's worked more effectively here than I've ever seen. I also appreciate that most levels will add a new mechanic you have to learn.
The levels are short and easy to digest on the 3DS.
It's got the classic Wayforward cartoon aesthetic.
Cons
This is mostly personal preference, but I don't play puzzle games a lot; they don't hold my interest too long. So this was a one weekend game. I didn't beat it, but I got my fill in those two days.
The lack of story really drives home the "arcade" aspect of the game, which is frustrating because I like the often silly pacing of the Shantae series. I'm also someone who invests in characters heavily, so having very little to go off but designs really hurt my long-term interest here.
Final Thoughts
This is a fun little puzzle game I recommend to try out considering it's often on sale and under $10. It's far from the best game, but you'll probably have fun with it.
6. Bayonetta (PS3)
Tumblr media
For better or for worse, my first introduction to Bayonetta was when she was added as a DLC character to Super Smash Brothers 4. Suffice to say I was bummed a character I had no interest in won the people's choice, and that definitely negatively tainted the series for me for a while. But after getting itnerested in character-action games by playing Nier Automata and Platinum's Legend of Korra, I ended up picking up Bayonetta on sale on the PS3.
Pros
Oh my god, the combat is so strong. I knew this from Platinum's other games, but it has a different feel. Korra was ultimately a budget game, and Nier Automata was an RPG first, but Bayonetta was a character-action game through and through. The combat is not easy to learn, but when you figure out and see the radical moves you're pulling off, there's a certain unmatched joy to the gameplay.
The plot is campy and silly in the vein of Devil May Cry, and has a good handful of characters I like (particularly Jeanne and Luca). It ramps up to hilarious scales.
The music is so good, and I wish more of it made it into Super Smash Brothers.
I love that you have a space to practice combos without any repercussions by turning off the timer in the loading screen transitions. This helped me so much early on to get a hang of which combos I could both pull off effectively, find a use for, and actually enjoy.
Checkpoints are fairly generous, and so long as you don't care about your score you can continue to try again with no repercussions until you win.
Cons
There are certain sections of the game where you are pulled into on-rails vehicles. These sections are not fun, and last FAR too long. To make matters worse, the best boss fight in the game is in the second half of a level where the first half is one of these terrible vehicle sections. Which means I'll never fight that boss again since I don't want to go through that initial part.
Through a combination of the initial negative reaction and the fact there are more interesting characters around her, I didn't end up attached to Bayonetta herself, which is disappointing considering how much I like Dante and the Nier Automata cast.
The first few levels are also far harder than the rest of the game. This happens because you're learning a new combat system, have less moves purchased, and most importantly do not have the Bat Within ability that increases your dodge invincibility. This move probably saved me so much, and you can get it pretty early, but not until you get past some hard parts. In particular, the first major boss has you contend with the above issues and, for no particular reason, is the only major boss without any checkpoints. This boss almost made me give up on the game, and heavily slowed down my progress and general enjoyment.
Probably the biggest issue is that this is a PS3 era game, which means you can expect tons of QTEs that cause instant death if you fail them. These even happen during bosses. It's such a product of its time.
Final Thoughts
If you can struggle through those initial hard (but not un-fun) levels and that first frustrating boss, you have a great game ahead of you. With some truly awful vehicle sections thrown in, but mostly great. At the very least, grab the soundtrack.
5. Dragalia Lost (Mobile)
Tumblr media
Oh you thought the mobile games were all at the bottom? Then you forgot about Nintendo's newest IP, Dragalia Lost. Which would be fair, because this game is available officially in very few countries, and it's kind of crazy.
With the success of other mobile games, Nintendo decided to try out a new IP in a mobile game with the help of the experienced developers CyGames. What we got was a mobile MMO with a heavy anime aesthetic and a lot of love.
Pros
The character designs vary, as they do in any mobile, but one major strength of Dragalia Lost (and the reason I started the game) is the large percentage of dark-skinned characters. It may seem silly, but as a South Asian it's so rare to see dark-skinned characters in this aesthetic. You'll get your token characters here and there, but Dragalia Lost alone probably has more than I've seen in a few other series combined. I'm pretty sure they have more than Fire Emblem Heroes, or at least an equal amount.
The developers have been very generous with resources, and so far have given you a free 10-pull whenever there's a new event.
We've also already had a lot of improvements due to developer feedback, which is a great sign for the game's future.
The strangest thing perhaps is...the gameplay is really fun for a mobile game. It's a top-down action RPG with heavy MMO elements in terms of leveling and co-op play. While your party setup means a lot, your skill in-game means even more if you're skilled at dodging, effectively moving around the map, and knowing when to throw out which ability. As you have such a heavy level of interaction with the characters, you also feel more attached to them, which is great for longevity in a gacha game. Each weapon type plays very differently, and with different elements and abilities you get a lot of variety. You also have different dragons you can transform into as essential limit breaks.
I really love how seamlessly co-op is integrated. You can play any mission with or without co-op, and it takes very little effort to group up with people.
Cons
It's still a gacha game, so a certain level of garbage is expected. The rates of pulling a 5-star seem far worse than Fire Emblem Heroes and Final Fantasy Record Keeper. To make matters worse, you can potentially pull a 5-Star Wyrmprint (a type of equipment) instead of a character or dragon, thus resetting your pity rate.
In co-op, if a host quits the entire battle is considered a fail. Which makes logical sense, but it's frustrating when the host quits while you're winning.
Bows are also significantly worse than the other weapon types, but my favourite character is an archer. This presents a problem.
It’s only available in a small number of countries, with still not announced plans for others.
Final Thoughts
It's the best mobile game I've played this year, but it's still a mobile game. Unless you're looking for a mobile game, I recommend just appreciating the art from afar. If you ARE looking for a mobile game, however, I highly recommend this. And if you care about Nintendo, maybe keep an eye on this; I could see this IP eventually coming out of mobile.
4. Deltarune (PC)
Tumblr media
It's tough to write these all at once. Okay, Deltarune. The surprise game from Undertale's creator. I still don't want to get into too much detail in case you haven't played this free and relatively short game, but it's been a while. There will be sort of spoilers below, so if you want to go in blind, skip down to number 3.
Pros
From the graphical style to the writing to the soundtrack, it's got the same great charm of Undertale in a smaller package.
The battle system is more involved and honestly a lot more fun. You're also not forced to go Pacifist to get the good ending, so you can actually enjoy it like a normal RPG. Even if you do go Pacifist like I did, the inclusion of different abilities gives you a lot more to do than just dodge enemy attacks.
The progression of Susie and Lancer as characters is fun to watch unfold, and the game does a great job making you invested in these characters within such a short time frame.
The final section of the game, without mentioning any spoilers, is also a nice little reward.
Cons
Simply because of playing Undertale, you may assume you have to play Pacifist and thus miss the main combat. This is untrue, but hard to know since you also want to go in blind on your first run. This is entirely a self-made issue, but it is nonetheless a common issue I can see.
..I don't really have any other negatives offhand except that it's short?
Final Thoughts
If you played Undertale, play this. If you didn't play Undertale, probably play that first and you'll enjoy this more. But you'd probably enjoy this regardless. And hell, it's free and under 5 hours, and runs on probably any modern PC.
3. Dragonball FigherZ (PS4)
Tumblr media
There have been so many Dragonball Z games, but the quality never hit this level. Remember when we considered the Budokai games to be amazing because of the competition? Now we have a DBZ fighter that's not only the best of the series, but also a legitimately great fighting game when compared to the other big fighting series. No weird 3D mechanics, no attempt to heavily integrate fighting. This is just a solid 2D fighter with some unique elements and a DBZ flavouring.
Pros
Made by Arcsys, the gameplay is unsurprisingly amazing. It's fluid, has a lot of ease-of-use for beginner players, and a lot of more complex mechanics to make high-end gameplay fun to watch. I was able to teach some friends in a short amount of time how to play this decently, which is very important with a multiplayer game.
And despite most of the characters fighting extremely similarly in DBZ, each character feels unique here. They're all just throwing punches, kicks, and energy blasts, but they all have their own distinct feel. Even the various orange-gi-black-hair characters all stand out with different silhouettes and colour tinting.
The new OC that Arcsys seems obligated to add may be strange as an Android/Buu hybrid, but adding a new female character to such a male dominated series is much appreciated.
The online lobby is easy to find the types of fights you're looking for, and provides a good deal of variety.
Cons
The DLC lineup is awful. Two versions of Goku, two versions of Vegeta. Really? Do we really need that? Then we got Goku's dad Bardock, who visually looks like another Goku. And then we got Fused Zamasu, who is basically an alternate version of base game charater Goku Black. The only characters unique in both design and gameplay are Broly (who I generally hate), Android 17 (who's great), and Cooler (who's not quite as cool as his brother). There's so many good choices for DLC, but short of a second season, this is what we got stuck with. And honestly, good DLC characters can make or break my interest in a fighting game long-term. This was what broke it.
Final Thoughts
It's a great fighting game, and hands-down the best Dragonball Z game. But there's only one fighting game series that is able to hold my interest long-term.
2. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Switch)
Tumblr media
It's still wild this was announced and came out in the same year. After being used to a long pre-release for Super Smash Brothers games, Ultimate really bucked the trend. It's also not like the other games in other ways as well, opting to include as much old content as possible instead of taking the usual "add a lot but cut a lot" approach.
Pros
One of my long-time top wished characters finally made it in: K. Rool! And he's so well-animated and sporting so many references! They really put a lot of love into him.
I'm vicariously excited for all the Ridley fans who finally got their big space dragon into Smash. They were always steadfast beside us K. Rool fans, and really deserve this win.
No one has to worry about their main being cut, because everyone is here. For those few people that legitimately liked Pichu, that must be a great feeling.
The core gameplay also received a nice boost in speed so it's not overly-fast like Melee, but still a lot more fluid than the other games. Bringing back moving air dodges, and clamping down on over-dodging have helped make the gameplay feel much smoother.
After the disappointingly poor single-player of Smash 4, I love all the single-player modes here. Classic has been redesigned to give each character a tuned and unique experience. We have a big single-player mode in the World of Light, and the smaller but more long-term Spirit Board.
Spirits in general are just a great way of reusing Stickers from previous games in a way that makes everybody excited. Seriously, they are just your typical gacha JPGS, but throwing effects and levels onto them really makes them feel more involved than trophier or stickers in past games.
My main, Zelda, got significantly buffed. This is really specific to me, but it makes a big difference.
Mii Fighters also feel far more viable this time around.
The range of music and stages in the game is just amazing.
Cons
For a game that promotes itself as having everything, it's bizarre and frustrating that the Stage Builder was completely removed. I really enjoyed playing around in there, and being able to use tracks I like from stages I don't like.
We also lost modes like Target Smash and the Home Run Contest for almost no reason. Short of these being added in future updates, I find this odd.
I could make a lot of complaints about character choice, but I'll keep it short and mention that I'm one of the few people not happy about the Piranha Plant, and I would really have had almost any non-3DS FE character instead of Chrom.
World of Light is also really long, and unlike the Subspace Emissary lacks cinema scenes. The opening scene everyone has seen is great, and then...that's it so far. I am expecting one more at the end (I'm maybe halfway through), and maybe one in the middle, but it's not going to live up to the SSE.
I also can't believe the huge backwards step taken in the online mode. Rather than having a separate Casual and Competitive mode like every other fighter (including the last Smash Brothers), there is only one queue, and you can easily get thrown into the opposite type of style you want. I actually cancelled my plans to buy the online service after I heard how bad this system is.
Final Thoughts
It's a Super Smash Brothers game, so I will enjoy it for a long time. The Spirits add a lot of longevity, but unless the online is heavily fixed I can see myself dropping out of this game within the next year.
1. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
Tumblr media
This game had such bad timing. Released alongside the similar but more anticipated Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a competitor system, and the different but same-system Persona 5, I think a lot of people completely missed this game. Or as many as can miss a big AAA game. If this came out just a few months earlier or later, I'm sure I'd see a lot more talk about it. But as things stand, it seemed to disappear from everyone's minds very quickly.
If you're one of the ones that forgot, Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action-adventure about a post-apocalyptic world where humans are left to deal with the increasingly dangerous machine robots built by pre-apocalypse humans, and is just as much about dealing with different tribes and cultures that emerge in this new world.
Pros
Alloy is one of my favourite new main characters in a long time. Not just in video games, but in general. While having some of that player-character "choose their personality" feelings here and there, she is mostly a defined and often interesting character with distinct strengths and weaknesses.
Voice acting from Alloy as well as the entire cast is superb, and really sells the world.
The gameplay is heavily archery focused with a lot of traps and different ammunition to help you bring down the machines that heavily outmatch you in a straight fight. The game is built to allow you to play with stealth or as an action game depending on how you select your skills. It's also got a good level of difficulty where you will definitely die a few times, but never get overly frustrated.
The story hits on many different points, and most of it has something interesting to offer. Don't expect story quality on the level of something like Nier Automata, but for a new IP it's pretty impressive.
One thing I love about fast travel is that, early on, you have to use consumable items to do so. This means you're initially encouraged to manually explore, and in doing so will learn a lot more about what the game can offer. Once you get a little further, you can unlock the ability to fast-travel with ease so you can backtrack and do quests without an issue. It's a good way to try to balance having people skip over environments.
Also it's a big AAA game with NO MICROTRANSACTIONS AT ALL!
Cons
The subtitles are pretty small based on my TV size and the distance I sit at. If you sit closer to your TV, it's probably fine.
For a game with such good quality everywhere else, the soundtrack is honestly pretty average outside of the main theme.
The open world is nowhere near as fun to explore as in Breath of the Wild, and holds far less secrets.
Final Thoughts
This feels strange to say for a AAA game made by first-party Sony, but please don't sleep on this game. It's really good, and it's been insanely cheap for the latter part of this year.
That's it. That's all the games. This took a lot more time than I expected, and I don't feel like proofreading since now it's already almost midnight.  2018 may not have had that many good new releases, but I found fun with video games.
Looking forward to playing Fire Emblem Three Houses and Kingdom Hearts III next year, and talking about them next December. Hopefully not on the 31st again.
