Honestly as someone who does like tlt its very much a hit or miss series. Its got stuff that works and stuff that doesn't work (god knows I have my criticisms of it) and its got a LOT i know is very subjective and if the reader doesn't click with the prose/characters/humor it makes the books completely unreadable.

COMPLETELY. i can kinda see how someone would find the mix of wildly different prose styles fun, but it just feels like gothic dialogue cut with marvel level quipping to me. hated AND disliked.

#narrates #the big server critique was primarily around the cavaliers not being a coherent class if you wanted to know. #tlt has a reputation both for being anti imperialist AND for being Fucked Up. we felt for both aspects to work #we NEEDED to have a coherent class structure for necromancers/cavaliers #class politics in general honestly. hey where do the skeletal materials come from. what's the labor politics WITH skeletons #you can get a lot of really fucked up and interesting dissections OF class exploitation with that entire premise. #buuuuut necro/cav seemed to be more of a metaphor for codependent battle couple dynamics. didn't work for any of us #particularly wrt gideon as indentured servant.

#ax speaks #advice is ALWAYS catered to “how to survive as a professional artist” #like yeah cool this is all great but I just wanted to know how to make my art cool not the rules I need to follow to get hired #good anatomy does not equal good art #good dialogue does not equal good art #encourage creativity divergence and experimentation #shade with black. make big thick messy lines. make your lighting completely nonsensical #make weird uncomfortable dialogue. narrate casually. space out your words strangely for effect. write in the second person #of course all of it can be executed badly that's why professionals tell you to stay away from it #but if you execute it in your own way and make it work you can really push the bounds of being an artist #the question should always be “goes it feel good” rather than “is it correct” when creating something #the next time someone asks you for drawing advice don't tell them to make the lines less shaky or to use more muted colors #tell them exactly what you would do to make their art look sick as hell #or if someone asks for writing advice don't tell them the structure of a story or what words to use #tell them exactly what your favorite parts are to focus on like dialogue or how you came up with the part you had the most fun writing

Honestly sometimes I really hate how pigeon holed Good Representation has become because sometimes I want to write queer characters that just wouldn’t describe themselves with specific terms because it’s not how the character thinks and operates in the world

#like yeah I can use language that indicates this queer identity without explicitly saying it #but we’ve kind of gotten to a point that queer authors can’t write implicitly queer characters #because in the absence of concrete proof they Must Be Cishet #this brought to you by the fact that I’m struggling with a character from an old work of mine #who I would describe as asexual #but who wouldn’t describe himself as such #and honestly while he does often use quote unquote coded language for that #it doesn’t come up That Often #because this is a work where he’s struggling with the death of his father who was completely absent from his life #so it’s a book mostly about family and understanding people #and like it’s important to me that he also doesn’t really understand himself fully #or at least doesn’t feel the need to internally search about himself #at least maybe not until the end of the work #and so he wouldn’t in the set narrative I have #ever describe himself as Ace #(to be fair though this work is complicated by So Much more than just that 😭 #this is also something where I’m trying an experimental thing where the main character doesn’t verbally speak At All #although he is the narrator #so it is something I’m taking so long to write because I have myself many challenges)
