✶ ┄ MAYDAY ! [ stand by me ]
summary: after totally embarrassing yourself at eddie's kid's birthday party, the metalhead single dad from the trailer park shows you his (perhaps equally embarrassing) favorite movie. (2.9k)
pairing: dad!eddie munson / f!reader
tags: eddie and maeve universe, strangers to lovers (eventually), slow burn, mutual pining, idiots in love, girl dad eddie munson™, fluff, ugly crying at movies

You never did crack open that bottle.
The one you accidentally brought to Eddie’s kid’s birthday party? Yeah, that one. The glass container sits unopened on the coffee table in front of you, casting amber reflections on the old wood beneath the lamplight. It’s just a silly conversation starter now. You’ve got no real reason to drink it, anyway.
There’s nothing more intoxicating than Eddie Munson’s presence.
Sunrays spill from your mouth when you tip your head back to laugh. You turn to look at the boy on the other end of the couch, and your warm cheek squishes against the cushion. “Stand By Me is not your favorite movie!” you argue, giggling softly with disbelief.
Eddie has no idea how big he’s smiling. He’s too busy staring at you to notice the beam on his face.
He shrugs his shoulders, now free from the confines of his leather jacket. He wears a faded Peanuts shirt now. A hand-me-down, you figure. “I mean… Land Before Time is a really close second,” he answers in a teasing lilt.
“Oh, yeah. Only the saddest movie ever made.”
“Maeve used to love it. And, like, not in a normal way— She used to make me play it for her until the tape spun out,” Eddie tells you, chuckling softly to himself. “It grew on me eventually, but… Then she grew out of it.”
You watch him get all forlorn at the thought. You meet his subtle pout with a scrunched nose. “Well, she’s only four, right? Surely, she hasn’t had time to grow out of much.”
Eddie scoffs and slouches further on the couch until his thighs spread. “You’d be surprised. Every time I think I— you know— start to understand her a little bit or whatever, she just… She changes, you know? Like, overnight.”
He doesn’t mean to get so suddenly sentimental about the whole thing. Especially not in front of a pretty girl he only met eight hours ago. He’ll blame it on the late night and the existential dread that always comes with birthdays. He conceals his brooding behind a dumb joke.
“I mean, just this morning, Maeve’s favorite animal was a Hefflelump… Now it’s a blobfish.”
You try to hold back your laughter. You fail. The sunshine-coated giggle sputters from your mouth despite your attempts to keep it hidden. Eddie only laughs because you are.
“I should’ve said turtle or something,” you humor with a roll of your eyes, tucking your knees to your chest. “Or, like, a badger. Maybe then I wouldn’t have gotten made fun of all day.”
“Those aren’t any less normal,” Eddie chuckles with a lopsided grin, dark chocolate eyes twinkling ‘cause he never really liked normal anyway.
You shrug. “Agree to disagree.”
“You wanna know something?” he blurts after a long beat of silent smiles. “When I tucked her in, she made me promise to take her to the aquarium tomorrow. Said she wanted to see ‘if the blobfish were just as gross in real life.’
You smile so wide your eyes squint at the edges. “Do they have blobfish at the aquarium?” you laugh.
Eddie shrugs. “Probably not. But she’ll get to pet a stingray or somethin’. Then she’ll forget all about it.”
“Sounds fun…” you murmur, picking at pills of cotton on the old couch with a suddenly anxious hand.
“Yeah. Parenting always is,” Eddie hums with a distant smile. “Even when it isn’t.”
“Should I— Should I, like, go?” you stammer.
The boy seems shocked by your question. His fluffy brows pinch as he hums. “Huh?”
You squirm, less than comfortable in your own skin. “Well, I mean, it’s… It’s getting kinda late and everything, and… If you guys are going into the city in the morning, I don’t wanna, like, keep you or whatever—”
Suddenly anxious, Eddie sits up a little straighter. “No! No, it’s okay. I don’t mind,” he responds, then quickly follows with wide eyes. “Unless— Unless you want to leave—”
“I don’t!” you answer, equally flustered.
Eddie forces an awkward chuckle. “I don’t want you to think I’m, like, keeping you hostage here or something—”
“I just don’t wanna overstay my welcome—”
“You couldn’t,” he insists.
You nod, and in a mousy voice, you reply, “Well, you couldn’t keep me hostage, so…”
Eddie grins. “Good.”
“Good,” you echo.
“So… Wanna watch a movie or something?” he offers with a fluttering heart and fidgeting hands.
He feels like a teenage boy all over again — only he never actually got the opportunity to ask a pretty girl out when he was a teenager. People weren’t exactly fighting to spend time with the local freak back then. Or now, really.
Except you.
“Whaddaya got?”
“Well, let’s see…” he says, grunting as he rises from the couch.
Eddie walks the short distance to the box television across the room — which Maeve has carefully decorated with a collection of sparkly stickers. He sorts through the VHS tapes stacked in less-than-organized piles with a ringed hand, realizing must’ve left all the good stuff at Wayne’s.
“Oh, you know… All the Maeve Munson favorites…” he singsongs with a sigh.
“Surprise me,” you call from the couch.
Eddie rises then, with two bulky VHSs clutched within ringed fingers. He holds them on either side of his face and grins between them. “Stand By Me or Land Before Time?”
“Stand By Me,” you answer with a firm nod. “Unless, you know, you wanna see me ugly cry.”
“That’s second date territory,” he quips with a wink, suddenly and very uncharacteristically cool. “Stand By Me it is.”
—————
You’re crying on a stranger’s couch about ninety minutes later.
The credits roll in static colors on the tiny television across from you. The low bass of a nostalgic song floats quietly through the living room — If the sky, that we look upon, should tumble and fall… Or the mountains, should crumble to the sea…
Eddie looks on with a sympathetic beam as you hide your teary face behind your palms. He can’t tell if you’re shaking from sobs or from laughter. Maybe a healthy mixture of both. “I thought you weren’t gonna cry!” he chuckles.
You peek at him through your fingers. Your eyes are glassy with tears and squinting at the edges with a smile. “I forgot how sad it was!” you sniffle, then laugh at yourself.
I won’t cry, I won’t cry… No, I won’t shed a tear…
“You’re crying, too!” you observe as the boy beside you wipes at his eyes with his fingertips. You reach over to shove him with a playful hand. “You big softy!”
Eddie scoffs and swipes his nose with the back of his wrist. “I’m not crying! I’m just… I had something in my eye.”
“Tears?” you tease with a scrunched nose.
He nods, and with a sheepish look in his eyes, he says, “Yeah…”
Your quiet laughter entwines, filling the dim living room with something sparkly and golden. The sound of violins swells in a similar way. Eddie’s eyes flutter shut as he begins singing the lyrics to himself, not really trying but sounding pretty anyway.
“Just as long, as you stand, stand by me…” he croons quietly. You beam and sing softly along with him, audibly less serious about the whole thing. “And darlin’! Darlin’! Stand by me… Oh, stand by me—”
Both of you quieten when a door squeaks about open down the hall. The distant screech is followed by the patter of tiny footsteps. Eddie huffs and sits up a little straighter. “Ah, shit…”
Your face floods with horror. “Was I too loud?” you whisper.
“No. It’s just midnight,” he answers, shaking his wild head. “She always wakes up at midnight. Like my personal little Gremlin.”
Maeve appears in the dark hallway then, drowning in one of her dad’s old t-shirts. Corroded Coffin, the front of it reads, in what seems to be hand-made lettering. The thing fits her like a gown.
Her curls sit in an untamed halo around her head from the intensity of her slumber. She rubs at her swollen eyes with chubby fists. Eddie can’t help but grin at the sight of her.
“Hey, Mayday,” he coos. “What happened? You can’t sleep?”
The girl shuffles to her father like it’s muscle memory to her. Still half-asleep, she grips his shirt with graceless fingers and climbs onto his lap with her eyes still shut. She cuddles into his torso, fitting perfectly there, while you sit frozen on the other side of the couch. Like maybe if you’re real still, she won’t notice you’re there.
“We gonna go see da blobfish now?” she wonders in tiny slurs against his chest.
Eddie’s cheek squishes against her head when he smiles. The expression gets lost in her wild chestnut locks. “Not yet, May. It’s too late— All the fishies are sleeping now. Like you should be.”
She shifts on his lap like she’s trying to get more comfortable there. Her cheek, indented with lines of sleep, rubs against his shirt when she turns to look up at him. “Need you to tuck me in,” she tells him, tiny chin bobbing against his chest.
Eddie juts back to see her better. “Again?” he humors with his brows raised behind his curly bangs.
“Mhmm,” she nods, slow and sleepy.
“Okay,” he hums, scoffing a tired chuckle. “I’ll tuck you in again, bug.”
You don’t mean to laugh. It just crawls up your throat and out of your mouth before you can stop it. You try to hide it behind your palm, but Maeve still notices.
Her fluffy brows scrunch together when she turns to you. She swipes at the hair sticking to her cheek with a fumbling hand to see you better. She doesn’t say anything, though. She just kinda blinks at you, with a brown-eyed, emotionless gaze.
You muster a wavering smile at the girl, lifting your hand in an unsure wave.
“Wanna go see the blobfish with us tomorrow?” Maeve blurts. Though, in her less than awake state, it sounds more like wanna go see da bobfish wiv us tommowow? It’s like you can feel your heart melting.
“The aquarium,” Eddie clarifies.
You squirm in your seat. “Oh, I… I can’t,” you sigh, then follow quickly when she pouts. “I wish I could! It sounds super fun, but I’m… I’m busy…”
You aren’t, really. ‘Cause tomorrow’s Saturday — the only thing you really have to do is try to wake up before noon. You just don’t know how else to turn her down.
“Maybe next time?” Eddie offers hopefully, mostly for Maeve’s sake.
You nod rapidly, just for Maeve. “Yeah. Next time. Definitely.”
“See? It’s okay,” Eddie lilts, squeezing gently at the girl’s sides until she’s smiling again. “We can have fun just you and me, right?”
Maeve pouts in response, a sort of snarled face that’s obviously playful.
Eddie laughs loud and boyishly in return. “Hey! Don’t make that face at me!” he exclaims, feigning offense. Maeve loses her poker face almost instantly as she giggles. “Go get in bed, you weirdo. I’ll tuck you in in a second.”
“And read me another book?” she presses hopefully.
He nods, knowing it’s a fight he’s bound to lose. “And read you another book.”
“Two of them?”
The girl holds her pointer and middle finger in front of her face. Eddie chuckles and guides the latter back down with a gentle hand. “One,” he corrects.
“Two.”
“One.”
“Two!”
A brief stare-off ensues, one in which you’ve got a front-row seat. Maeve’s dark chocolate gaze resembles her father’s — button-eyed and swimming with something honeyed and stubborn. She tilts her chin to her chest and glares unwavering at the man in front of her.
Eddie inevitably caves. He sighs so deeply his chest deflates. “Fine… Two. But only if you run real fast.”
Maeves slides down his denim-clad legs until her bare feet hit the carpet. She scurries down the hall without another word, quiet giggles fading with her footsteps. Eddie slumps against the couch with a small, contented sigh.
You realize you haven’t stopped smiling for several minutes now. “She’s really sweet,” you compliment to fill the silence.
Eddie scoffs a gentle laugh. “Yeah. When she wants to be.”
The quiet returns. You run out of things to say. The notion of the late-late night settles more heavily upon you. You swallow hard and fight for a way out that doesn’t make it sound like Eddie hasn’t just given you one of the best nights of your life.
“I think I’m gonna—”
“Well, I should—”
The boy starts speaking at the same time as you. You cut each other off without trying, then laugh quietly at yourselves.
“You first,” you tell him.
“I should go tuck Maeve in before she goes all Mayday mode and starts screaming at me,” Eddie says, only partly joking.
His sweet little Maeve is only Mayday when she’s throwing a too-passionate tantrum. Or when it’s past midnight, and she’s acting like a total gremlin. He doesn’t particularly want you to witness either. ‘Cause kids tend to be pretty gnarly sometimes — especially when you aren’t the one raising them.
“Yeah, I should probably start heading home, anyway,” you reply. “It’s late.”
Eddie rises with a small huff. You follow behind him towards the front door, both of you moving with slow and heavy strides — neither particularly wanting the other to go.
“Thanks for keeping me company,” he says beneath the sound of the screeching screen door. “And for helping Maeve have a good day and everything… Most people don’t really consider hanging out with a four-year-old and her dad a good time, so…”
“Well, most people are weirdos,” you scoff and slide past him through the doorway. “You and Maeve are, like, the coolest people in Hawkins.”
You stand ahead of him on the front steps of the trailer, glowing beneath the silver moon and the buzzing amber porchlight. Eddie lingers in the entryway and holds the door open with his shoulder, so he can hear Maeve when she inevitably starts shouting for him.
“Yeah, I don’t know about that,” he wavers with a scrunched nose. “Maeve’s pretty cool and all, but… She definitely didn’t get that from me.”
“Your favorite movies are Land Before Time and Stand By Me,” you deadpan with a flat face. A smile inevitably pulls at your lips when you look at him too long, pretty as he is. “You’re cool, Eddie. Whether you wanna be or not.”
“Agree to disagree,” he grins, totally sheepish as he shrugs off the compliment. “Thanks for hangin’ around. Again.”
He feels like he’s said that too many times now, but he’s too full of gratitude to stop. It’s been just him and Maeve for so long. And, yeah, sure, Steve and Robin come around when they can, but they’ve got their own lives outside of this one. It isn’t every day someone appears at his trailer with a bottle of booze and the wherewithal to acclimate to his chaotic life.
Eddie feels like he should never stop thanking you, really.
You shrug. “Thanks for keeping me around. Again.”
“See you soon?” he wonders with a hopeful glint in his dark eyes, made a much lighter amber in the moonlight.
You nod firmly once. “‘Course.”
And even though that’s as good a dismissal as any, you both linger in the doorway still. Like your feet are glued in place.
How are you supposed to walk away from him? The man with wild rockstar curls, rings on each finger, and a beaded bracelet with his daughter’s initial in the very center. The man who loves cartoons more than his toddler and cries with you at sad movies?
You figure you’ll spend forever chasing this foreign feeling he’s so effortlessly given you.
“Daddy!” Maeve shouts. Her high-pitched voice rings through the tiny trailer. It makes you wince a little. You didn’t think something so tiny could be so loud.
“And there’s Mayday…” Eddie lilts quietly, unflinching ‘cause he’s used to this by now.
“I’ll go,” you laugh, walking backward towards your car. “I’ll— I’ll see you around.”
“G’night,” he calls to you as he watches you go.
His chest stings when he realizes he never asked for your number. It feels much too awkward to do it now, and he’s only got a few minutes more before Maeve goes crazy on him. He should’ve asked you ages ago, really. But he didn’t. ‘Cause he’s an idiot.
You notice it, too, but you flash him a sheepish smile over your shoulder anyway. Even if you never hear from him again after you’re gone, you figure there’s always next year.
Maeve will be another year older. Steve will bring you along to her party if you beg. Eddie will be in desperate need of a pick-me-up, and you’ll bring a bottle of booze just to make him smile. The alcohol will go untouched, though, as the two of you get lost in conversation and Stand By Me.
Even if all this was only destined to happen once every year — even if it was only supposed to happen once and never again — you’ll spend the rest of your life grateful that it happened at all.
With a cold hand trembling with longing, you wrench your car door open. Though your heart’s heavy with a distant worry that you may never be back here again, you grin at him through the grief and the small distance between you.
“Good night, Eddie.”

⛧Jason Grace
He does not know how to ask a girl out.
Like, he has no fucking clue on how to do that. You see, he's a perfectionist in absolutely everything in his life, and would be no less concerned with his girl. Who, by the way, is not his girl. 'Yet', he keeps telling himself that.
So, of course that he has to have the most perfect plan of all on how to ask you out to prom.
He'd do absolutely averything to make you feel safe and loved, so when you told him a few weeks before that the most expected experience of your school-life was THE prom, he took that as a subtle cue that you wanted him to invite you to go with him.
It indeed was, but you would never tell that to anyone.
Of course, the first person he thinks to go to is Piper, since she knows you and she's a daughter of Aphrodite. Especially because of that last one.
So of course she advises him on how she thinks it's the best way to invite you to prom.
One day, you had a evening date on top of the Zeus cabin - you both found a spot that you could throw some blankets and lay down together, watching the stars. It was almost on routine, but tonight he was very much anxious.
"Right there it's Andromeda. There, Orion and a little bit further down, right there, it's Pegasus." You say, pointing the constelations to him as you always did. But tonight, he wasn't staring at the night sky. He was staring at you.
How could you be so beautiful with those soft lips, those cute cheeks, that kissable nose, those always happy eyes... you were just too beautiful. And it was just amazingly cute how your eyes shined and your smile got even brighter when you were talking about something you liked.
So he decided to just fuck the whole plan up. Which was definetly something that the Normal Jason would ever do, but this was Madly-In-Love Jason. He'd do it, for you.
"You wanna go to prom with me? Like, as my date?" He'd ask you. You snapped your head towards him as if you hadn't heard it quite right.
"Um... what?" You asked, confused it he really meant what he just asked.
"Do. You. Want. To. Go. To. Prom. With. Me?" He asked pausedly, making sure you understood. You felt your cheeks burn bright red and a smile creep up your lips.
You leaned forwards and connected your lips in a soft and tender kiss, giving him the answer he needed. "Thought you'd never ask."
⛧° Percy Jackson
He only discovered that the prom was gonna happen one week before it did.
And that's when it clicks to him why you're being all weird and evasive, refusing his kisses, hugs and the 'i need you rn' texts.
Sure you were just friends with benefits, but still hurt you quite a lot that he didn't even bother to ask you to check if you were even going to the prom.
Little did you know he had no idea there was going to be a prom.
So when he texted you this morning with a ‘meet me at the aquarium in twenty.’ you considered ignoring him. But maybe he was finally going to apologize, you hoped.
The first thing you saw when you got to the aquarium that was the usual spot of your dates, he was there holding a bouquet of your favorite flowers. He wasn’t looking at you, instead he was looking at the mirror, fixing his… not messy hair?
That’s when you noticed. He was in a freaking tuxedo, which was a sight for sore eyes, his usually messy hair was all gelled up and he looked… even more handsome than usual.
When he looked at you, a smile immediately crept up his lips, and you were suddenly feeling weird in that old pair of jeans and a baby blue cropped. Still, he looked like he had never seen anything prettier than you.
“Hey, sweetheart.” He said and walked towards you, kissing your cheek softly. You smiled and blushed, forgetting for a moment that you were still mad at him. He handed you the flowers, which you took gratefully from his hands.
When you looked up at him again, he seemed… guilty about something. He wasn’t even looking at you in the eye when he sighed and pulled you close to him, hugging your body.
“I’m so sorry, y/n/n, i’m so, so sorry. I swear i didn’t know that the prom was coming, i just- i’m sorry for being such an airhead.” He said, giving multiple kisses to the top of your head.
“It’s ok. I’m not mad anymore.” You said, smiling at the boy in front of you. “How can i even be mad when you literally call me to an aquarium in which you are in a freaking tuxedo?” Your asked, kissing his lips softly.
“Really? You forgive me?” He asked, his eyes hopeful.
“Of course i do.” You said. Then, you raised one hand to his hair and muffled it, making all messy again. “And i prefer your hair in its normal rebel condition.”
He smiled as you walked towards the aquarium that you two had visited multiple times before. The place of your first kiss, the first holding hands, the first date…
But when you got near the fish tank, he asks you to stop and close your eyes, so that’s what you do.
Five minutes later, he comes back to your side and smiles, “You can open it now.”
And when you opened… well, all the fish in the tank were in a formation that said ‘Prom?’, and your smile instantly brightened. The boy next to you had the biggest smile ever seen on earth’s surface, and it was the cutest thing ever.
“Of course i’ll go to prom with you, dumbass.” You said, pulling him down by his collar and giving him a very passionate kiss.
⛧° Leo Valdez
He just let life tell him the right moment.
Literally, he couldn’t care less to whether you both were going to the prom or not. He just wanted to make you happy as always.
So when he discovered that you indeed wanted to go to prom, he made his life’s most important work until this day: a metal rose that, when you pressed a button to the side, opened to a message of ‘Do you wanna go to prom with me?’ that he knew you’d like.
He made it and triple checked it, just to be sure it’d work. It did work, but he couldn’t keep the thought that probably something was gonna be ruined with his bad luck.
So, one day, he was in bunker nine, covered in grease and soot, his hair messy and a little oiled up. He had just finished the rose-mission and was getting his stuff together before leaving to cabin nine so he could take a shower and change into clean clothes.
That’s until you ruined his plans and came in unexpectedly.
“Leo?” You asked, getting inside the hot bunker. Lots of projects were in the table, on the walls and even on the floor. Lots of weird materials that you didn’t quite know the name to were spread all over the place. It was actually cute.
“Mi amor, is it you?” He asked, leaving the shadows to a very smiley, pretty and happy you. He thanked the gods that he had taken the rose out of his work table before you got there.
“Yeah, it is. Whatcha doing?” You asked, sitting down in a pouf that you told him to put there, moths before.
“Just, uh… some weird Leo Valdez stuff, y’know.” He said, jokingly.
When he looked back at you, the tip of his nose caught fire. You were just… ethereal. Just sat there, looking around his work, hair pulled back in a messy braid, the small little pout that you always seemed to have in your lips…
He needed to do that right now.
Right now it’s the perfect moment.
Hell, every moment is the perfect moment. As long as it’s with you.
“Hey, princesa, i made something for you. I don’t know if you’ll like it, but, uh… yeah.” He said, getting closer and crouching down in front of you.
He took the metal rose out of his pocket and handed it to you. Your face immediately turned into a bright smile, grabbing the rose from his hand and pressing a kiss to his lips.
“Aw, honey, thank you! It’s so pretty!” You said, amazed by the beauty of the metal in front of you.
“Just, hm..” He said as he pressed a button in the back of the rose.
Thanks the gods, Tyche decided to be on his side today.
It occurred just right in the way he planned. The rose opened slowly, revealing a small little message. When you read it - with difficulty from the dyslexia -, your eyes watered.
You pulled him in for a hug, not caring it he was all greasy and sweaty and dirty. “Yes! Of course i will, babe!” She said, giving kisses all over his face.
“Te quiero, princesa.” He whispered and kissed you again.
⛧° Frank Zhang
He was nervous.
His hands were all sweaty and he wasn’t sure if you were going to accept the prom invite.
Fine, you were almost dating by now. But what if you stopped liking him? What if you found someone else? What if you hated him? What if-
Well, he was overthinking. A lot. And he just wished everything would go smoothly, and definitely not wrong. Nope. Anything is gonna go wrong here, folks.
You’re going to a little date dinner in the evening, you’ll can’t about your days and, in the end, he’ll ask you to be his prom date. Everything will be completely okay.
And at the beginning it really was. He got himself to calm down and was relatively fine, compared to earlier, and you just talked together at the beach, talking about your days.
The whole problem began when you mentioned the subject ‘prom’.
Oh, look at his hands getting all sweaty again.
He’s kind of scared, but he forces himself to ask you the question anyways.
“Hey, y/n, i was w-wondering if… if you-“ Before he got to finish, the boy got so nervous he transformed himself into a dog.
Why a dog, you ask? Because he remembered one day that you mentioned to him that dogs were your favorite animal on the world.
And he never forgets anything that you tell him about yourself.
But he got so, so embarrassed, thinking that he had ruined every chance that he had with you.
Little did he knew you just fell in love even more.
When he shifted back into his human form, you were still giggling, and he was super embarrassed about the situation.
“I’m sorry, i… i kinda shift when i got nervous..” He mumbled under his breath, looking at his hands.
You chuckled a little more and pulled him to you, giving him a kiss to the cheek. “It’s okay. Now, what were you gonna ask me?”
“Uh… do you… do you wanna go to prom with me?” He asked the question, and your smile just brightened. You kissed him in the lips now and felt him melting onto your lips.
“Of course, big guy.”
a/n: i kinda liked it???? like what. oh, thank you SO MUCH ALL OF YOU CAUSE I REACHED TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY LIKES LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK??? LIKE, I MADE MY DIRST POST THREE DAYS AGO, TOPS!! Im just so proud and thankful, i love you all! my 24 besties 😭😭

MC has a secret admirer!
Request goes; They're already dating but it's new so most of the lesser demons don't know about it. MC then starts getting love letters from an anonymous person and the Dateables/Brothers get the need to show off that MC is theirs?
I'm gonna do the brothers first! Hope that's cool! If yall wanna see more pls request it! (Also pretend that this is near the beginning of yalls relationship)
Tumblr media
INTRO
"Wow, look babe, I got a love letter! Guess I'm more popular than I thought, you might have some competition." You chuckle, kissing his cheek. It was a very flattering letter, laying out all your strengths, compliments sprinkled generously throughout the writing. It was... surprising to say the least. But you were excited to tell him about it!
LUCIFER
If he's already on edge, he might just yank it and rip it in half. Today, however, he's in a good mood.
"Let me read it." You hand him the paper, watching him closely as he grimaces and scoffs. He's not nervous, but he is baffled that someone had the nerve to send you such a... bold letter.
A little prideful, in the sense that he has something that no one else can. He know's you wont leave him for some lower demon, but he can't help but feel slightly threatened.
Walks a litter closer to you around town and RAD. He'll hold your hand when the hallways start to filter out and there's less students around.
Puts in the effort to take you on more public dates, Restorante Six, most likely. kissing your hand and giving you roses at the table. He's not flashy, but it's enough for rumors to spread quickly.
MAMMON
He rips it from your hand, immediately turning his back so he can read it. "Is this the kinda lame sappy stuff you're into? Even I'd do better than this! It don't even mention ya eyes!"
He hands it back to you, mumbling something about, "i'll show 'em" before he stomps off, shaking his head.
He struts the RAD halls with his arm around you, glaring unnecessary at anyone who walks by. He's certainly on edge for the first couple days after. He starts passing you small silly notes during class, little drawings and pickup lines. You watch him as he turns away, hand trying to cover his flushed cheeks.
Also takes you out more. Carnivals, amusement parks, more casual things! Posts 1 post, with a few photos of you together, captioned 'almost as good as grimm.' If you get another letter, you might end up having your first kiss in front of the school!
LEVIATHAN
"Wha? Who?" He can feel his heart beating faster, anxiety rising in his chest. "Just kidding Levi, you're the only demon for me!" You giggle at him. "Could I read it?" You hand it to him, watching him plop down in his gaming chair. He gets very expressive while he reads. Before long, his tail is swishing behind him, "they don't even know you! There's no mention o-of any of your favorite videos games in here! You love games." He frowns, throwing his hands up dramatically. "I know Levi, I don't even know who sent it. Don't worry, they don't know me as well as you do." He pretends to lose control of his tail, that pulls you into him for a hug.
He sulks for a few days, but after some reassurance, he has a plan. You're going to the aquarium and he'll hold your hand! That'll really show 'em. Might even go to physical school a few days more than usual to walk with you.
He writes you a little in-game dialog sappy note, telling you a few things he loves about you. Might make a singular Devilgram post with you, hugging his Ruri-chan body pillow, captioned ''my #1 and my #2'
ASMODEUS
"Ohh! Of course you're popular MC! Everyone loves you, and me of course. We're the top power couple! Now let me take a look." He smiles at you, smile faltering slightly as he reads the letter. Eyes blinking a little stiffly, he hands it back to you. "That's so superficial, you're much better off with me." And with that, he walks away.
He shows the world exactly who's you are immediately. You're tagged in maybe 10 posts in a row. Pictures of you and him, some of just you, all captioned things like, 'my love' and 'my number one always' and 'remembering the moment I fell for you' and it's unmistakable.
Becomes even more affectionate in the RAD hallways, snuggling up to you, sitting in your lap/having you sit in his during lunch.
SATAN
He frowns, putting his hand out for the paper. He glances over it, brow furrowing as he reads. "This is amateur writing. You deserve much better." He hands it back to you, walking past you quickly with a scowl on this face. He turns back halfway down the hall, "be ready at 6:30." You decide to leave him be.
First order of business, he writes you a beautiful letter. It's long winded, many poetry references, and references to stories you've read together. Even compares you to a cat, somehow. He does not give it to you yet.
He dresses nice for your date, electing to take you to dinner, and then a stroll through the royal gardens. As you approach the doors to the House of Lamentation, he turns to you, reaching in his pocket and pulling out a wax sealed letter, your name written neatly on the other side.
Sits a little closer to you at lunch time, and in the library. Hoping someones will see and rumors will spread.
BEELZEBUB
He doesn't read the letter. He's a little jealous, but he thinks reading it will upset him, so he stays away.
He makes the small effort to hold your hand more. He's not normally one for PDA, but for you, he can make a small exception. You can see how flushed his face is when you look up at him.
On game days, he lets you wear his jersey until he needs it. Might post a picture on his Devilgram of you in it. Captioned, '#1 fan'
After one of his games, he sees you talking to a lower demon, they seem to be standing awfully close. He sees them throw their arm around you, and so he calls for you, pretending he didn't see them. He waves at you, jogging over and cupping your face with his hands before placing his lips on yours.
BELPHEGOR
He's half asleep when you tell him. Isn't really bothered until you make the comment about competition. Now he's awake, and looking around like there's a present threat. Yanks the letter from you, holding it close to his face while he scowls. He scans the paper, before rolling his eyes and rolling back over onto his side, taking the letter with him.
Pretends he's not bothered. Asmo brings it up at the dinner table, Belphie calls it a "stupid letter" and crosses his arms, slouching.
Doesn't bring it up again, but you notice he's a little more cuddly in public than he was before. One day after class, he finds you in the library studying, he saunters over, kissing you brashly, tongue tracing the edge of your bottom lip,and loudly, before wiping his lip with his thumb, and sitting next to you, "what're you studying today, MC?"
If you like my posts, please feel free to tip me here!

What the boys got you for christmas 😍🎄‼️
Tumblr media
Notes: Just a little something for christmas 😭👍🏾 i haven’t written anything else lately cause of work but that armin angst is still coming! But yeah, still merry Christmas!
Context: The following aot boys x black!fem reader. (not proofread😭)
Warnings: fluff aside from couple of cuss words and mention of getting high on plug!connie’s part
Characters: Armin, Eren, Connie, Jean and Reiner Bonus!: Nerd Armin and Plug!Connie
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Armin:
- Armin is so sweet.. From the moment u met him u knew he was a soft bookworm with a kind heart. He asked you to be his on valentine’s day by writing a letter confessing his feelings.
- You were happy to be his fr and you were really excited when y’all’s first christmas together came around.
- You got him this limited edition old dictionary, one of those fake aquariums from the 2000s, a fancy microscope and the entirety of his favorite book series.
- However when Christmas came and it was his turn you couldn’t have been more surprised.
- He got you multiple cute chanel coats and purses, a box of your favorite chocolate, a box of miss dior and an entire macbook😭😭😭
- “ARMIN?!?” You exclaim. “Since when ever was you rich????!?”
- And the boy just smiled at you and said he saved a bunch of money from his job but you didn’t really believe it.
- He also spent the whole day watching christmas movies and taking taking cute pictures together with you😚❤️❤️
Eren:
- You and Eren got officially together on Halloween after a party so you guys were still kinda new and tryna feel each other out.
- You knew he liked working out so you just got him some gray sweatpants, some protein crap and one of those flannel hoodies.
- This boy ended up getting you some uggs and one of those “The tote bag” bags and a bunch of bath and body work stuff
- He even got all your favorite scents, aw❤️
- Eren acted like he didn’t always listen or pay attention but he clearly was the whole time and it made your heart melt🥹
- Eren didn’t wanna do the sappy shit he did but he sure wasn’t gonna show it right now so he just hopped on the game and you happily watched for the rest of the day.
Connie:
- Connie and you spent yall first christmas together as not really a couple but that weird talking stage thing. You still counted tho cause you might as well be his gf🤷🏾‍♀️
- Connie was a goof ball fr so you didn’t really know what to get him. When it came down to the serious emotional stuff y’all just joked yall way out of it and so it was this weird limbo ish going on
- You settled on a nike jacket and a gift card to his favorite restaurant. You felt so bad cause it seemed like bare minimum but Connie was excited regardless!
- He said it’s the “thought that counts🥰😊” and all you could say after a few seconds was “Moral of the story headass..” and yall just busted out laughing
- Connie ended up getting you the brown faux jacket you saw and wanted from burlington, some pearl earrings and a necklace and a visa gift card with-
- “How much money is on here Con?”
- “$500.😗”
- WHAT?!!!2!@/
- You were expecting $50 or even $100 but $500? Half a band?
- “Yeah i didn’t know what to get u so…😗have fun!”
- You hugged him so hard and accidentally said he was the best boyfriend ever but when you pulled away to quickly apologize he just shushed you and said, “Anything for my beautiful girlfriend😌..”
Jean:
- You and jean got together in the summer after school let out. Jean didn’t talk much like Eren but he was a goof ball like Connie especially when he was around him.
- You didn’t have much to work with embarrassingly. It was gonna be y’all’s 6 month anniversary on christmas but you barely knew a thing about him!!
- You ended up getting him some polo club cologne, airpods and a plain black hoodie.
- When Christmas came around you received some jewelry, some of the makeup you use and a cute brown fluffy teddy bear 🧸❤️
- Y’all had a very chill christmas, Jean wanted to go for a walk so you went with naturally and y’all ended up witnessing a beautiful sunset❤️
Reiner:
- You and Reiner got together in spring. He asked you out by bringing you a bunch of flowers in a bouquet which was definitely on theme for spring time..
- Reiner also stayed to himself a little bit more but he was more open with you so you had a good idea of what he liked.
- You got you and him some matching pjs to wear for the holiday. You got him a couple of books since sometimes he would read, a fancy shaving kit, a couple of turtlenecks and a photo album of you guys first year together❤️
- You were really proud and happy of your gifts but then you saw he didn’t get you anything other than a bunch of replacements for the hair products you use.
- “Hold on i think i put your other gift over here….close your eyes real quick..”
- You sighed and closed your eyes. You prayed he wasn’t gonna put anything together out of nowhere. You were kinda disappointed but it was ok.
- You heard shuffling and then you could tell when he was right in front of you.
- “Ok, open.”
- When you opened your eyes yoy immediately took everything back.. what you saw was a kneeling reiner on one knee holding a gorgeous diamond ring 💍😍
- For christmas he gave you a proposal!!!
- Even though it was kinda early, to be honest you two were talking for a lil minute anyways so it still felt like proper timing.
- You guys planned your wedding for christmas eve as spent the rest of that day cuddling with him watching Christmas themed sit-comes
Bonus:
Nerd!Armin:
- You knew Nerd!Armin since you two were kids and over time feelings developed.. then it naturally blossomed into a relationship. It was kinda weird because as you two grew up you guys just slowly became girlfriend and boyfriend.
- Nerd!Armin had always been a bit brainy and a major science fan so it wasn’t hard to get him anything at all.
- You got him a brand new pc, plentyyyy of books especially the sci-fi types and some weird graphic tees.
- He smiled with his braces and handed you a louis vuitton purse that had some louis vuitton jewelry and perfume inside. Also a soft blanket with your favorite design/character on it, Dior makeup items and chocolates.
- “Where did you get the money to buy this? Cause all i see you do is watch youtube and science shit-“ You questioned in surprise.
- “Stocks..”
- You just shrugged cause you had no idea on what he was talking about but you were just happy this silly brainiac was yours for the holiday 🫶🏾
Plug!Connie:
- You and Connie started off as any other plug and customer. But then Connie started to catch feelings and by like August of this year he asked you to be his.
- He was very protective of you so by the time the holidays came around no one knew you two were a couple.
- He would always spoil you too with shopping sprees and paying for you to get your hair and nails did 💅🏾
- It was hard to think of what he’d want cause he could literally buy anything he wanted plus he didn’t really talk about himself much
- You settled on a couple of hoodies, one of those vape shark jackets and a game for his ps5.
- He ended up getting you a whole ass black Audi r8.
- Your jaw was on the floor 💀
- “Con, what the hellll..”
- “What? Y’don like it?”
- “I do but literally how??”
- “Ion know😗.”
- “Boy-“
- Connie never told you how he did it but he had proof it wasn’t stolen at least so 🙄
- He also got you a giant teddy bear and a new iphone.
- You kinda felt like your gifts were not the best compared to his but he assured you it was fine and he was grateful to have you regardless. ❤️
- You two ended up spending the rest of the day getting high and watching weird christmas movies no one talks about .

@caramelswirlwithacherryontop
Taiju x chubby reader
I'll see you on Wednesday at 5:30 sharp. in front of the Underwater aquarium. It's a date.
WOW HE'S DIRECT!
You thought, pretty stunned.
But prior to this text, a few weeks ago, You were with Yuzuha. It was nearing sundown and you were walking beside her, listening to her ramble about whatever. That's how you usually were, you weren't always aware of what's going on but you were happy anyway.
"But Yuzuha, you really didn't have to beat that guy up. It was just a silly comment, you know, just a joke." You laughed nervously, tugging on the sleeves of your uniform.
"Huh, What do you mean?! That bastard totally deserved it. That wasn't a joke, Y/n. That guy insulted you and no way was he gonna get away with it." She muttered before turning to you and continued,
"Hey, you gotta stand up for yourself with guys like that. Because if they get away without it the first time, they'll keep doing it." She scolded you, almost like a mother scolding her child, despite you basically being the same age.
You looked to the side, tearing up, remembering your classmate's rude comment "He wasn't wrong, Yuzuha. I am ugly and fat."
"No no, please don't cry. Y/n, Your worth goes far beyond what you see in the mirror. And I appreciate you for who you are, not just for how you look. Your personality, kindness, and strength are what truly matter. If anything, he is ugly! He is a loser and stupid." She cupped your soft face before wiping away your tears and hugging you tightly.
You laughed at her attempted to insult him,
"Do you wanna go to the park? We can swing for a bit." She suggested, You nodded, excitedly.
On the way to the park, Yuzuha continued rambling about her math teacher and how much she hated the class. The park was in view when Yuzuha stopped walking and muttered,
"Huh? Is that Mitsuya and...Taiju?" Her question made you look up and squint trying to see who was there and she was right.
"Yeah, looks like it." You answered.
Yuzuha started sprinting towards them, "Hey, Mitsuya!" She shouted. He turned towards Yuzuha's call and waved, smiling. Taiju was sitting on one of the benches in the park while Luna and Mana were playing with him. Luna was brushing his hair, putting bright colored extensions and also using bright colored hair ties while Mana was putting fake nails on his nails. The sight was hilarious. Whilst Yuzuha was distracted with Mitsuya, who wasn't far, you were hesitant but you sat next to Taiju. You watched as both girls gave Taiju a makeover. Suddenly, you heard a familiar ring tone.
"Is that-" You were cut off by the two little girls,
"ICE CREAM TRUCK!" They screeched in unison, excited. They both took off running towards and Mitsuya obviously followed before they got lost, leaving you and Taiju alone, together, on the bench. You had spoken to Taiju before, actually, if anything you found yourself always gravitating to him, or admiring him from afar, never admitting your feelings towards him. Even when Yuzuha asked, she didn't mind, she was curious. But An uneasy silence settled between you, punctuated by hesitant glances, revealing the palpable awkwardness in the air. You peeked last time, only to see Taiju struggling to remove the fake nails Mana had put on. He was picking at non-stop.
"You need help with that?" You finally spoke, breaking the silence. He stopped before moving his hands toward you. You grabbed his hand, before gently removing each nail carefully so as not to hurt him.
So soft
He thought as he stared at your face the entire process before his free hand reached up and tugged a strand of hair behind your ear.
"Pretty." He whispered.
Blushing and stammering, you found yourself unexpectedly flustered as the subtle charms of the flirtation caught you off guard, leaving you feeling delightful yet a little disoriented.
"A-alright, I'm done." Accidentally stumbling over words. You looked around, Mitsuya and Yuzuha were nowhere in sight.
Wait, did they leave?
"It's getting late, shouldn't you get home soon." Taiju suddenly said, making you jump.
You scrambled to get on your feet, "Yeah, you're totally right, I'll get going-"
"I'll walk you home." He deadpanned,
"whAt." Your voice cracked,
"It's too dangerous for a pretty girl like you to be walking around at this time. There's plenty of shitty delinquents out there." He explained, standing up, towering over you entirely.
"O-okay, whatever you see best."
"Good girl."
Despite your efforts to hide your growing embarrassment, Your body language betrayed your emotions. avoiding direct eye contact, and occasionally tripping over your words. The unexpected attention left you feeling both surprised and self-conscious, creating a memorable moment of flustered charm. Once you reached your front door, You felt Taiju step closer and lean against you, pinned you against the door itself.
"I'll see you on Wednesday at 5:30 sharp. in front of the Underwater aquarium. It's a date."
His straightforwardness made you also wanna become frank with him. You wanted to be honest and do what your body told you to. You reached out and cupped his face, maintaining eye contact which you were avoiding. In sync with your motion, Taiju leaned in, Your lips met in a tender dance, a silent conversation of longing and connection. Time seemed to pause as the world faded away, leaving only the warmth of the shared moment. It was a gentle collision of emotions, a sweet blend of passion and intimacy that spoke volumes without a single word.
In the meantime, Yuzuha and Mitsuya high-fived somewhere, stalking you guys, and see how long it'll take until one of you makes a move.

Imagine learning how to always win disagreements with Shanks
Tumblr media
During the middle of a battle
You: get your little ass inside the galley and lock the door
Uta: I'm not a child, I can fight just as well as the rest of you. *pushes a Marine overboard*
You: this isn't a place for a child!
Shanks: Look at her, she's fine.
Uta: *having the time of her life fighting and winning against full-grown marines*
You: *throws a marine overboard* Shanks!
Shanks: She's fine, I grew fighting like this too.
You: Really, but you're so well-adjusted.
Shanks: Exactly... wait, was that sarcasm?
You: of course it's sarcasm Shanks, every fight like this could cause her more trauma later in life.
Shanks: I think you're worrying too much.
You: no, you worry too little.
Benn: I swear to the gods if you two don't shut the fuck up, I will throw myself overboard!
Marine: *swings a sword down on you, but only manages to cut your shirt in half*
You: *shirt gets immediately blown open by the wind*
Uta: *loudly yells* boobies!
Everyone on the ship: *whips their head around to look at you*
Marine: I am so sorry, I meant to kill you not humiliate you.
You: how ignoble*knocks him out with a punch and faces Shanks* Uta. Galley. Now.
Shanks: *eyes locked on your exposed chest* Yeah
Uta: What!
Shanks: I dunno, what do you want me to do.
Uta: *grumbles as she stomps into the galley* men are so spineless.
Tumblr media
A week later, docked at some port
You: Honey, I want to go to the aquarium when we're in town.
Uta: *gasps* me too, me too, I wanna go to the aquarium! *Starts yanking his hand*
Shanks: what do you want to go to the aquarium for? We live on a boat in the ocean, just go take a swim, you'll see plenty of fish for free.
Uta: it isn't just about seeing the fish it's about helping the fishies and other sea life.
Shanks: What?
You: The aquarium rescues and cares for injured sea creatures. By going to the aquarium we're supporting their rescue efforts. Plus this way she can see the fish and not get her hair wet.
Uta: very good point, seawater would damage my hair.
Shanks: I'm not paying for you to go to the aquarium, I will however buy you a swimming cap
Benn: *also wants to go to the aquarium, so he covers Uta's eyes, and yanks up your shirt* we're going to the aquarium.
Shanks: *too distracted to put up much of a fight* okay
Uta: *knows what's going on* are you really that whipped?
Shanks: you're not old enough to judge me at the moment, wait twelve years then get back to me.
You: I can sure as shit judge you, but I will be using this to my advantage to get my way.
Shanks: god I hope so... I mean oh no, think of the child.
Benn: fuck them kids
Uta: yeah, fuck them kids.
Benn: language.
Uta: sorry, fuck those children.
Benn: no

Parfum d’étoile - episode twenty-seven
scaramouche x reader smau
previous | masterlist | next
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You could see Scaramouche from the window of his car, looking down at his phone.
He didn’t seem to notice you as you waved at him but it didn’t stop you from walking over and knocking on the window.
You wave again and put your hands together as a quiet apology before going to the other side of his black Mercedes to the passager seat.
You threw yourself onto the soft seat and left out a long sigh, finally getting to sit down and relax after minutes of running around your apartment to not be any later than you already were.
"Hey."
"Oh hi ! Sorry I’m late" you said, breathing heavily after each word
"It’s fine, it’s kind of on brand with you anyways."
The car fell into silence after his sentence
. After seconds that felt like hours of him not starting the engine you decided to take matters into your own hands and strike the conversation
"You have a nice car !"
"Yeah it was my mom’s. She gave it to me when i got into college."
"Oh that’s nice… So uh… Where are we going ?"
"I have absolutely no idea."
"What ?"
" I don’t know where to go."
"Oh… Wait, what??"
"We should probably eat first since it’s noon."
"Uh… sure of course" you answered, still stunned by the revelation that he did not have anything planned.
"Kazuha said something about going to the Aquarium but i don’t really want to spend the day looking at fishes."
"Yeah, I don’t think aquariums are for first dates"
‘First dates’ he thought, by that logic there would also be a second, a third or even maybe a fourth.
What you thought about was the thought the he asked his friends for advice and that you weren’t the only one self conscious about all of this.
"Let’s go to McDonalds." His sentence pulled you out of your thoughts.
"What ?"
"Let’s go to McDonalds." He repeated, he didn’t really know what he was saying at that point
"Huh ?"
"I said-"
"No no I-! I heard what you said it’s uh… Why ? I was thinking of a place more first date-ey to be honest."
"The study sessions."
" ? "
"Kazuha got to pick Japanese food, you picked Italian after that but I didn’t get to pick."
"Oh yeah, that’s true"
"You don’t want to ?"
"No it’s- it’s fine with me"
"We can get something through the drive through and drive around and listen to music and speak about everything and everyone, that could be fun"
Now that he said it like that, it did sound fun : simply fooling around with him with no goal in mind seemed like a first date you could remember
"Yeah, that could be fun"
-★-
"Give me one or your nuggets"
"Should’ve ordered some for yourself"
"I paid for this ! Atleast let me have one !"
"Look at the road, god ! Do you want us to die or something ?!"
"It’s fine I’m an excellent driver" he said, snatching a chicken nugget from between your lips right into his mouth before getting his eyes back on the road.
"You’re a dick, Kuni."
"Don’t go dirtying the car now i just washed it"
"Huh ? You washed it for me ?"
"No dumbass i washed it because Childe borrowed it and he apparently can’t clean after himself."
"Well the name checks out"
You could hear a slight chuckle from the man beside you and it made you feel proud.
This date wasn’t actually, going as badly as you thought it would, it felt nice and casual to just spend time with Scaramouche.
Alex G was playing on his car speaker and the grey sky outside made it feel weirdly soothing.
"Where do you want to go after this ?"
"Wherever i don’t really care."
"God you’re so annoying."
"How is it my fault that you invite me on a date but don’t have a plan in head?!"
"Let’s go to the mall I have something to buy."
"Ooh I saw nice pants last time! You’ll buy them for me right ?" You said jokingly expecting a ‘no way in hell’ from him
"Sure, i don’t really care"
"Huh ? I was joking you know…"
"I’m not, I have money to spend might as well spend it."
"Do you wanna be my sugar daddy ?"
"Aren’t I already ?"
He stopped the car in the mall’s parking lot without you even noticing you were even approaching the mall already.
He stepped out of the car and closed his side before going to the other side and opening up the door for you.
"Ma’am."
"Woah, so gentlemanly."
"I know right."
Now that you were both out of the car you could finally examine what he wore.
It was your first time seeing him wear a button down and it didn’t look so bad, the black tie that he wore with it was slightly loosen to give more style probably. The color of his tie matched his pants, black baggy jeans with holes on each knees and he added a dark jacket to protect himself against the chilly air from outside.
It seemed like whatever he was wearing was fitting of him and it pissed you off.
"Quit staring."
"It’s weird seeing you with a button down"
"You saw me with one when i went to eat with my mom dumbass"
"Did I ? I don’t remember that."
You don’t know if he did it subconsciously or on purpose but scaramouche intertwined your fingers like it was nothing, hand and hand and dragging you into the shopping mall.
You didn’t say anything about it, scared that if you did speak up he would pull away. You just wanted to enjoy the warmth of his hand for a few moments longer.
-★-
Your hands came apart when you entered his car for the second time. Scaramouche pulled away so easily you couldn’t help but let out a disappointed sigh and hoped he didn’t notice (he did)
"So… what else should we do ?"
"We could drink that wine of yours"
You pointed to the plastic bag in which a bottle of french red wine he just bought that was sitting next to the bag filled with clothes that he insisted on buying you
"Uh you’re nice and all but this is a 1973 grand cru."
"Ok ? And ?"
"This bottle was 1.5k i’m not opening it for you."
"Come on, it would be fun !"
" I won’t be able to drive home, you know that right ?"
"We can uber home and you’ll get your car tomorrow !"
"You’re so fucking annoying" Scaramouche said as he started the car
"Where are we going"
"A cliff."
"What for ?"
"So i can kill us both." He sighed in annoyance, not satisfied with the decision he just made "To drink the wine dipshit, what else ?"
A satisfied smile crept on your face as you looked ahead of you, the sky was clearer now and it was a beautiful shade of blue.
You checked the time, wondering how long you’ve been on this date already.
You ignored the countless notifications from your friend group, not wanting to text friends while being with Scaramouche.
Your phone read ‘3:49’
Your shopping session was obviously way longer than expected and you kind of felt bad to use his money but also very satisfied with the purchases he made. You knew that whenever you’d tell Mona she won’t let it go ever.
Scaramouche had been weirdly sweet during the day, you wondered if he’d be like that if you ever dated him then started to hate yourself when you realised what you were thinking about.
Still dating Scaramouche doesn’t seem that bad ; he was rich, good looking, fun to be around, rich, dressed well, rich, had really good grades, was sweet (at time) and was filthy rich.
Settling with a guy like him didn’t seem like such a bad idea and you wanted so hard to hate the thought of it but you couldn’t.
"What is it ?" Scaramouche had noticed you staring
"I just thought that we’ve been driving for a while" you lied "where is that fucking cliff of yours ?"
"Out of town."
"What ? How are we gonna go back ?"
"I’ll drive of course"
"Drunk driving really isn’t safe you know ?"
"I’m not going to have more than one drink i’m not an alcoholic" like Kazuha, he wanted to add but he didn’t want to speak of him while on a date with you "I refuse to leave a fucking Mercedes out there in the wild, i’m gonna bring this baby back to the dorm parking lot before i go to bed i swear"
"Ooh so you’re that kind of car lover."
"What is that supposed to mean ?"
"Nothing in particular."
-★-
You checked your phone once again
6:01
Scaramouche drove for more than two hours which was surprising to you.
Time flew by fast with countless conversations and improvised karaoke.
You were still grinning ear to ear getting out of his car and finally being able to stretch properly.
You heard the car trunk close violently and turned around to see Scaramouche holding two wine glasses and a bottle of wine that seemed different than the one you pointed to earlier
"So you basically got me the cheap version ?"
"Yup!" He said not an ounce of shame in his voice "This is still 200 bucks i’m sure you’ll live"
"What if I don’t ?"
He ignored you and simply sat on the hood of his car.
It felt wrong to sit on the hood of a car that was worth more than all of your belongings put together but if he did it you might as well.
You happily took the glass he was offering you from his hands before he pour down some of the liquid from the wine bottle he just opened
"You’re not going to poison me, are you ?"
"I might" he replied pouring himself a glass
"Cheers" you said, both at the same time.
Scaramouche took a small sip while you downed your whole glass in a matter of seconds
"Not even appreciating the taste, jesus"
Silence fell onto the both of you, a comfortable one.
You let your head fall onto his shoulder, closing your eyes, almost drifting off the sleep before adding quietly
"I really wanted you to like me, Kuni"
He didn’t speak but you knew he heard you.
Your eyes opened once again when you felt his head on top of yours, both of your bodies being warmed up by the other’s
You stayed like that for hours that felt like minutes. Staring at the sun hiding from your view for the day, the orange aspect of the sky adding a little something to the already perfect evening.
Your heart was beating fast and you hoped that Scaramouche’s was too.
After countless of small meaningless conversations, it was sadly time to go home
-★-
You yawned
"I’m so tired"
"We’re almost there, don’t worry."
10:36
You could see the familiar lights and building of your town and it felt bittersweet.
You didn’t really want the day to end yet.
Even though you barely did anything, you felt awfully close to him and you liked that feeling.
The car stopped and you knew that it meant you arrived at the front of your apartment but you still checked outside hoping that maybe you were wrong.
You weren’t.
You could see the windows of your living room from there and it felt like they were mocking you.
You stepped out of the car, legs almost giving out because of how long you spent sitting.
Scaramouche was still in the car, hands on the steering wheel and he looked like he was more than read to leave.
The window from the driver seat was opened so you leaned in to be heard better
"Today was fun, we should do that again"
"Yeah."
"Well then, goodnight."
"What ? You aren’t claiming the hundreds of dollars worth of clothes in my backseat ?"
The grin on his face made you want to slap him but you simply sighed.
He got out of the car and gave you your(his) purchases
"You’re being awfully gentlemanly tonight"
"I’m always like that"
You faked a cough
"Well-"
His lips suddenly crashed on yours, unexpectedly and they tasted like cherry.
His sudden kiss made you gasp and he used the opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth
You closed your eyes letting him explore your mouth all he wanted, letting a few moans and whimpers here and there.
Before you even had the chance to grab him he cruelly pulled away panting slightly before leaving a soft peck on your now swollen lips.
Your face was burning up and it was hard to catch your breath but you still managed to whisper
"What… What was that…?"
"The kiss i owed you. It’s a little late though so I apologise.
He planted another kiss on your lips and barely pulled away before whispering
"Have a good night, Y/N"
And with that, he turned around, got into his car and drove away. Leaving you frozen and speechless on your own doorstep.

❝THE WAY THE JELLYFISH SWIM, THE WAY MY COFFEE TASTES.❞
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🍰 genre: fluff ~ !! ✒️ word count: 828 💭 summary: megumi treats today like any normal day,he finds nothing too grand about aging another year–but of course, you want to make everything feel a little more special today, because you believe the love of your life deserves the best on his special day. 🍍 happy birthday to megumi fushiguro my son !!
Tumblr media
megumi takes a sip of his coffee, it's the usual–bitter black coffee, with a slice of toast that has a smidge of butter on it. this is the most perfect way for megumi to spend his morning, at least to him. though today, you're pouting as you see his breakfast today. "barely buttered toast with bitter coffee?" you ask your boyfriend as he turns to look at you, about to take a sip of his hot drink.
"it's just right." megumi replied simply, letting the hot liquid roll down his throat, even if it's bitter, it's just how he likes it–nothing more, nothing less. you sigh and sit next to him, poking his cheeks to get his attention as he scrolls through his phone mindlessly. "are you forgetting what day it is today?" "it is... a friday. that means i have to return the book i borrowed from the public library today."
you sigh once more in exasperation; you couldn't help but think how objective the boy you fell for was, he was certainly mature for his age, but... sometimes a little too serious, a little too methodical–a little too dull at noticing the more exciting things in life, and it made you feel obligated to remind him exactly what event was taking place this very day.
"gumi, it's your birthday today." you remind him with a chuckle as you poke his cheeks again. megumi blinks a bit, his long eyelashes batting a little; you always found it adorable whenever he did that. "...oh." megumi uttered, going back to drinking his coffee. you furrowed your eyebrows at his lack of interest at his own birthday. "oh?" "well... that's good, i lived another year. we don't have to do anything, though, it's almost the holidays already." he said in a very matter of fact tone, taking a bite out of his barely buttered toast.
you puffed up your cheeks and crossed your arms over your chest. "no can do, gumi. it's your special day! come on, let's... go do something fun." you try to encourage him as he looks up at you with his classic apathetic expression. "what would we do today, i don't exactly wanna do anything else." "we could... go to the aquarium!" you exclaimed. megumi hesitantly agreed, knowing you wouldn't let up if you two just stayed at the dorms for his birthday.
as you two went to the aquarium and saw a myriad of colorful, fun-looking and gorgeous forms of sea life behind the large tanks... megumi couldn't help but get lost in the sea of your eyes as you beamed and pointed to the fishes and whales–he also couldn't help but wrap his arms around your waist and hold you close as you gawked at the stingrays and catfish that swam by.
"did you know, gumi... jellyfish are actually older than the dinosaurs; some are as old as over 600 million years old." you gushed, with megumi looking at you and nodding. "huh... must be sad being a jellyfish." "why? i mean... you get to live for a really long time, just floating around, living life." "yeah, but, if i was a jellyfish, there'd be no point to living for a million or, heck, even a billion years if i'm not with you." megumi muttered, his hand brushing against yours, intertwining his hand with yours, not planning to let you go.
megumi places his other hand on the tank and stares up at the swarm of jellyfish moving about in the tank, with you staring up at him in awe at his words that carried such emotion with them. "...you're the only reason i feel excited to celebrate my birthday now, even if it's not obvious. you make my bitter coffee taste sweeter every morning, make my barely buttered toast taste like fine pastries, and make even trivial trips to the aquarium feel like travelling to another dimension. you make my life worth living, no matter how hard things get." he utters, turning to look at you with a shine in his dark blue orbs, his hand clinging onto yours a little firmer, but with a gentleness to it that made you warm all over.
"and... the reason i didn't want to do anything else today was because... i don't need anything more, as long as i'm with you. thank you for being with me, my love; i'm just glad to grow a little older with you." megumi murmured, smiling softly as his face became a little brighter, and a hint of pink touched the tips of his cheeks. today was a very good birthday for him, and no matter what present you'd plan on getting him today... all that mattered to him was the greatest present of them all for him: you being in his life. because of you, megumi's looking forward to his next birthday, then the birthday after that, and every other milestone of his life with you by his side.

[Big Brown Eyes masterlist]
Tumblr media
Everett runs over to the tank where the sea turtles are floating around, gliding through the water, and looking as if they have no problems in the world. The little boy’s eyes can’t focus on anything in particular as he tries to take in everything in the large tank. A turtle with a spotted shell swims right in front of Everett’s face and the three-year-old looks like he may pass out in excitement.
“Mommy! Did you see?!”
“I did,” you say, stepping up next to him. You card your fingers through his brown curls as Nancy comes up on your other side, pushing Everett’s stroller which is currently holding his new stuffed otter doll. “The turtles are cool, aren’t they?”
“Yeah!” Everett grins and walks down the length of the glass, following his new turtle friend as it swims along.
Though your eyes follow your son as he walks away from you, you can feel Nancy’s gaze on you. She’s basically been chomping at the bit to talk to you about what happened with Eddie since she’d gotten into your car so the two of you could take Everett to the aquarium. Now that the toddler’s out of earshot, she takes her chance.
“You know you can talk to me, right? About anything.”
“I know,” you say quietly, keeping your eyes on Everett. “I don’t want to talk about it, though.”
“Are you sure?” Nancy asks.
“Yes.”
Everett runs back over to you then, giggling about how cool the turtles are. He lifts his arms up to you and you sweep him up so he can get a better look at the reptiles floating towards the top of the tank.
“What do you think, Everett?” Nancy asks. “Are the turtles your favorite so far?”
His little face scrunches up in concentration as he thinks it over. The little furrow between his brows makes him look uncannily like his father.
“Dolphins,” Everett decides. “But I like the tootles and ottahs, too.”
“Wanna go see what’s next?” you ask. Everett nods his head and scoots down from your arms. His little hand slips into yours as you make your way into the next room. Jellyfish were the next creatures awaiting you. They don’t interest the boy as much and it isn’t long before he’s curled up in his stroller, snoozing gently with his new stuffed otter in his arms as you and Nancy leisurely walk through the rest of the aquarium. Nancy respected you saying you didn’t want to talk about what happened between you and Eddie, but you know she’s still silently itching to know. So, you decide to let it out.
“Okay,” you say with a sigh. There’s a bench at the other end of the room and you nod in that direction. Nancy follows behind you as you push Everett in the stroller. Between the seat and the wall, there’s a big enough gap for you to park the sleeping little boy and sit down next to him.
“What’s up?” Nancy asks as she takes her spot next to you. Taking a moment to collect your thoughts, you watch the bright and colorful fish swimming before you in their tank. The light filtering through the blue water reflects and casts shadows against your face.
“Eddie… He, well, he uh… When I went to ask him if he wanted to go out again, he said yes but he wouldn’t even look at me. Obviously, something was up. I asked him and he starts saying how he’s never dated a mom before and how it’s a lot.” Pressure begins building behind your eyes and you need a moment to take a deep breath before continuing. “He dumped me. Makes sense, though. It was the first time he really saw me be a mom, you know?”
“That’s,” Nancy starts before trailing off with a sigh. “That’s really shitty. I’m sorry that happened.”
Not trusting your voice, you shrug your shoulders and nod your head. Hopefully, Nancy reads that as you accepting her sympathy.
“Yeah,” you manage to get out in a hoarse whisper.
Nancy’s brow wrinkles in confusion as she thinks over your words, though. “But, why would he say yes to a second date at all if he wanted to stop seeing you?”
“I don’t know.” Quickly, you wipe your nose on the back of your hand, trying to dispel the impending tears. “Maybe he wanted to ease me into it. Didn’t want to come out with a flat-out no. Especially with everyone else there at the party.”
“It’s his loss,” your best friend tells you. She rests her hand on your shoulder and gives it a light squeeze. “He’s an idiot and doesn’t know what he’s missing.”
The best you can do is offer her half a smile. It would be pointless to voice your self-deprecating thoughts that state the opposite because, the amazing friend that she is, Nancy would have a rebuttal for all of them. Later, a pep talk would be something that will help you. Right now, it would just go in one ear and out the other.
“Ready to get going? Hopefully, this sleepy head won’t wake up in the middle of his naptime and be a little menace,” you say.
“A menace? Everett? Never.” Nancy’s smirk makes you chuckle as you stand up from the bench.
“He’s Steve’s kid, of course he’s a menace sometimes,” you reply.
“You got me there,” Nancy admits, standing up beside you and walking with you toward the exit.
Tumblr media
“What’s going on?”
Dustin doesn’t want to shush his date, but his mind is entirely focused on something other than her. He takes a few steps out of the shadow he and Geri had been standing in when he first noticed you and Nancy walk past him and over to the bench to sit. A smile had lit up his face when his eyes landed on the pair of you, but as soon as he saw the downtrodden expression on your face, he bit his tongue. Dustin hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but how could he not when you were only a few feet away?
She thinks she was dumped, Dustin thinks. Why does she think Eddie was dumping her?
“Dustin?” Geri asks.
“Yeah?” he responds, trying to settle himself back in the present moment.
“You okay?”
“Fine,” he tells her with a smile. “You wanted to go see the penguins, right?”
“Yes!” Geri takes Dustin’s hand and gives it a squeeze as they head in the right direction for the exhibit.
Maybe Steve will know what’s going on. I’ll have to track him down after this date.
Tumblr media
The sun is setting as Dustin drives down the lonely road after dropping Geri off at her place. He’d had a nice time with the girl he met at work, but it was obvious to both of them that his mind was somewhere else the last half of the date. Now, he’s heading towards the station to see if Steve’s on call tonight or not.
His car is parked outside in the small parking lot, but Dustin knows there’s a chance his friend could be out on the ambulance for a call. Taking his chance, Dustin gets out of the car and pockets his keys as he walks into the open bay that houses the ambulances.
“Hey, Thompson,” Dustin greets one of Steve’s fellow paramedics.
“Henderson, how ya doing? Looking for Harrington?”
“Yep.”
“He’s inside,” the paramedic says, nodding his head towards the open door that leads to the interior of the station.
Dustin gives him a salute in thanks before walking inside and looking around the small area. He finds Steve in the kitchen, feet kicked up on one chair while he lounges in another, bowl of cereal in his hands.
“Dufstin?” Steve asks, mouth full of Captain Crunch and milk. “Wha’re you doin here?”
“Wanted to talk to you.” Dustin grabs another chair and turns it around before sitting on it backwards and resting his arms on the back.
“Bout?” Steve asks before swallowing what’s in his mouth.
“I had my date today, you know,” Dustin starts.
“Oh yeah. How was it?”
Releasing a sigh, Dustin tilts his head up and stares at the ceiling for a moment before looking back down to Steve who’s shoving another full spoonful of cereal in his mouth.
“Was good. Until I overheard a conversation between your ladies.” Dustin had started referring to you and Nancy as “Steve’s ladies” a couple of years back, and at first, you and Nancy rolled your eyes at the term. But when Dustin offered to change it to “Steve’s girlfriend and baby mama,” you two thought being called ladies wasn’t so bad.
“Oh, they took Ev to the aquarium? That’s funny. Wait–why was your date good up ‘til then?”
“Because I overheard them talking about Eddie.” The look Dustin gives Steve has the older man frowning and straightening his posture in his seat.
“Why’re you staring at me like that?”
“Eddie told me a different story at the party than what I heard today,” Dustin says, ignoring Steve’s question. Steve’s stomach sinks with guilt. Shit, Steve thinks. Eddie told Dustin what happened and now he knows this is all my fault. But Dustin’s next words surprise him.
“What do you know about what happened?”
“Why do you think I’d know anything?” It sounds more defensive than Steve intended, but he knew he’d end up caving and spilling his guts to his best friend anyway.
“You drove her home last night,” Dustin says, raising his eyebrows. “What did she say?”
“She said she’d been dumped.” Suddenly, Steve finds the contents of his bowl interesting and keeps his gaze on the last few pieces of golden cereal floating around.
“Eddie said he just wanted to take things slow because of Everett.” Dustin bites at his bottom lip for a moment, eyes staring at the floor next to him, mind somewhere far away. “Why did she think he was breaking up with her?”
At first, Steve thinks it’s a rhetorical question—and maybe it is. But the way Dustin stays silent, as if waiting for Steve to say something, weighs on him and he feels the need to break the silence.
“I-I don’t know, maybe she…”
“Steve.” The harsh tone of Dustin’s voice has Steve looking up from his bowl, his brown eyes swimming with guilt. “What the hell did you do?”
Conscience finally becoming too heavy to bear, Steve thunks his bowl down on the table and runs his hands over his face. He’s never wished for that alarm to go off for an emergency call more than he does right now.
“Shit,” he hisses. The weight of Dustin’s glare makes Steve’s skin crawl as he sits up properly in his chair and kicks away the second chair he’d had his feet on. “Look, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. All I said to Eddie was that I didn’t want Everett to become attached to him if he wasn’t going to stick around. Is that so wrong of me?”
“Jesus Steve, they’ve been on one date! They’ve known each other a few weeks!”
“I know. I’m an asshole,” Steve responds, not quite yelling but certainly louder than he was talking before. “I just felt really fucking weird about everything, okay?”
Dustin shakes his head in disbelief before leveling his gaze on Steve again.
“What, did you think she’d be a single mom forever, never fall in love, while you have Nancy?” The question isn’t meant to be mean, but it stings Steve nonetheless. He never wanted anything less than the best for you.
“No! Of course not. She deserves to be happy. It’s less about her–”
“About Everett, yeah,” Dustin interrupts. “Dude, Eddie isn’t trying to be his dad.”
“I know, I know!” Steve pushes himself out of the chair and begins to pace back and forth. Dustin’s eyes track him all the while, as if he’s watching a tennis match. “I just don’t want my son getting hurt.”
“Well, no shit,” Dustin scoffs. “But it looks like things were going fine until you opened your big mouth.”
Steve sighs and ceases his pacing. He purses his lips and stares in the direction of the wildlife calendar on the otherwise blank wall in front of him, lost in thought. Hadn’t he known what he was doing was wrong all along? If it wasn’t wrong, he wouldn’t have tried keeping the conversation secret from those around him.
“What do I do?” he finally asks.
Dustin’s eyes bulge, thinking the answer was the plainest thing in the world. “Fix it!”
“How?” Steve runs his hands through his hair, a sure sign of his agitation. He’d definitely be looking in a mirror as soon as possible to straighten it out. Dustin cocks his head at his friend and shrugs one shoulder.
“Your big mouth got you into this. Try using it to get out of it.”
Tumblr media
As if concentrating wasn’t hard enough for you at work on Monday morning, Mrs. Montgomery says that you need to reshelve books in the romance section. Every time you pick up a book there’s either a couple embracing or a title about love or some affection-laced mushiness. It’s nauseating and you don’t even realize you’re slamming the books around until you whack one on the cart too hard and it goes flying halfway down the aisle. A heavy sigh escapes your lips as you trudge over to pick it up. A face pops around the corner and you’re startled to see Nancy standing there.
“I was going to surprise you for lunch,” she says as she comes to stand fully between the bookshelves, “but uh…are you okay?”
“Fine,” you say as you notice the lunchbox Nancy is holding. You take in the flowy floral summer dress she’s wearing and become self-consciously aware that you’re in an old pair of jeans and a black polo shirt.
“Lunch?” Nancy asks, holding the lunchbox up in front of her face.
The two of you go into the back room and she unpacks the sandwiches she made and two cans of coke. She waits until you’re both a few bites into your food before she speaks.
“So, Steve called from the station last night. Said Dustin paid him a visit there yesterday afternoon.”
“Oh?” You pop open your soda and take a fizzy sip.
“Mhmm,” she hums as she finishes the bite she just took. “Apparently, Steve was a bonehead and said something to Eddie at the party.” At the mention of his name, you feel anxious, and it must appear on your face because Nancy rushes to get the next sentence out. “He said he didn’t remember exactly what he said but it was something about not wanting Everett to get hurt. Don’t worry, Steve said as soon as you both get off work this evening, he’ll be over and groveling at your feet. Well, he said he’d apologize but I’m going to make sure he grovels.”
Anxiety turning to anger, you wipe your hands off on a napkin and nod your head. “Nancy, if I murder Steve and the judge is a woman, do you think I’d be able to get away with it?”
Your best friend considers this, tilting her head from side to side as she thinks.
“You’re less likely to get caught if I help you hide the body.”
Tumblr media
On Tuesday afternoon, Dustin drives towards Benny’s Burgers with Eddie in his passenger’s seat. Yesterday, Steve had begged Dustin to get Eddie to come to the diner on his lunch break so he could talk to him.
“I’m not leaving you alone with him this time. You need supervision,” he’d told Steve. So, Dustin had called up Eddie and asked if he wanted to grab lunch together the next day. Whether or not he mentioned that Steve would be there, well he figured a lie by omission wasn’t really a lie.
Steve’s standing outside the diner when Dustin pulls into a parking space. Eddie’s brows furrow in confusion and he looks over to see Dustin avoiding his eye.
“Why’s Steve here?”
“He, uh, wants to talk to you,” Dustin says, glancing in his direction.
Eddie sighs and drops his head back against the headrest. He’s not entirely sure how he feels. He isn’t exactly mad at Steve, but he doesn’t have the warmest feelings towards the man.
“You can definitely tell him just to fuck off,” Dustin offers as he unbuckles his seatbelt.
“Nah,” Eddie says with another sigh. “Might as well hear what he has to say.”
Dustin already knows what Steve has to say because they’d practiced it over the phone last night and then again this morning. He didn’t hide the fact from Steve that he was afraid he was going to fuck this up even worse.
Steve awkwardly greets both men as they get out of the car. There’s a tense silence between the three of them as they head inside and sit down at a table. Dustin almost picked a booth but didn’t want to be shoved into a seat with either of them in case things got ugly. The waitress who comes to take their orders has to sense the uneasiness that was settled over the table. Steve waits a few moments after she walks away before clearing his throat and starting his prepared speech.
“Look, Eddie, I shouldn’t have said anything to you the other day. It wasn’t my place.”
“But you’re right,” Eddie says with a shrug. He lifts his eyes from the table to look at Steve where he’s seated across from him. “He’s your son and you want to make sure he’s not gonna get hurt. I don’t want to hurt anyone, that’s why I wanted to talk to her about slowing things down. For Everett.”
“Is that what you said to her?” Steve asks.
Eddie sighs and brings a hand up to rub along his eyebrows. “I tried.” He throws his hand out to the side before nervously rubbing it along his stubble. “But she started to get upset and I got confused.”
“She, uh,” Dustin starts, letting out a small cough, “thought you were breaking up with her.”
“What?” Eddie turns his attention to the younger man, completely flabbergasted by his words. “Why? Why would she think that?”
“Her anxiety,” Steve says, lightly rapping his knuckles against the tabletop. “It makes her brain tell her all kinds of shit that isn’t true.”
“Her insecurities get the better of her,” Dustin adds. “Makes her jump to the worst-case scenario.”
Eddie takes their words in, nodding absentmindedly as he tries to wrap his head around this.
“What? Does she think I don’t find her attractive? Because she’s fucking gorgeous,” he says.
“No, it’s not that,” Steve says with a shake of his head. “Well–it may have crossed her mind, but that’s not what this was about. It’s about her being a mom.”
This only adds to Eddie’s confusion and his face wrinkles up as he squeezes his eyes shut. “Why would that bother me?”
“Unfortunately, it would bother a lot of guys,” Dustin says. Eddie shakes his head in disbelief as if this personally offends him.
“Look,” Steve says, leaning his elbows on the table. “I just wanted to apologize and sit down to talk with you. You seem like a good guy, Eddie. She needs a good guy.”
Eddie’s shoulders slump as he slides down in his seat. The array of emotions he’s felt over the last twenty minutes is enough to give him whiplash. They buzz around his thoughts like bees, but he tries to shake them off and just focus on one thing: you. How he feels about you. How you’re out there thinking that he didn’t want to be with you all because you have the sweetest kid he’s ever met. Bitterness burns his stomach, and he knows he has to talk to you as soon as he can. But would you even hear him out?
“If she thinks I broke up with her, will she even want to see me?”
Dustin nods his head. “Nancy went to see her and told her that this one over here opened his yap when he shouldn’t have.”
It’s all Eddie needs to hear before he’s fishing out his wallet and tossing a twenty on the table. It’s more than enough to cover what he and the other two ordered. Hungry stomach be damned, you’re more important. He’s confident either Steve or Dustin will eat the lunch he ordered, and he gives them a half-assed wave as he jumps out of his seat and heads for the door. Dustin jogs out after him and slaps a hand down on his shoulder.
“I drove you here, Romeo.”
“Oh, right. Could you take me back to the garage so I can get my van?”
“No problem.”
As soon as Eddie gets into his van, he pulls out onto the street and races towards the library. His eyes dart to the clock on his dash and he prays you haven’t had your lunch break yet. Even if you did, it was unlikely the library would have so many people in it that you wouldn’t have a minute to talk. He makes a quick attempt to make himself look as presentable as possible in his rearview mirror before hopping out of the van and taking large strides up to the library door. Brown eyes scan around the room, looking for any sign of you as he makes his way to the front desk. That’s where he’s seen you the most but lets out a little huff when he sees you’re not the employee who is behind the desk today. The brunette on duty tells Eddie that you had been at work that day, but your son was sick, so you went to pick him up and take him home.
The adrenaline that was coursing through Eddie’s veins at the thought of seeing you and maybe sorting this whole mess out starts to dissipate, and it makes his limbs feel heavy and his body sluggish as he makes his way back to the van. Boosting himself inside, Eddie slams the driver’s door and lets his head fall back against the headrest. If Everett is sick, Eddie figures that you probably won’t be up to talking. Maybe he’ll call you after Everett goes to bed and pray that you hear him out. Smacking a hand against the steering wheel out of frustration, Eddie takes a few moments to collect himself before starting the van and heading back to work.

Eddie paces back and forth in front of the phone hanging on the wall of his trailer. The edge of his thumb is being gnawed on by his teeth as the nerves start getting to him. He wasn’t even this scared to call you the very first time. But what if even after he explained the miscommunication you still didn’t want to see him? What if you don’t even want to hear him out at all? What if, what if, what if.
“Just do it,” Eddie grumbles to himself before snatching up the phone. He dials your number and holds the phone against his ear, starting to pace again, but only as far as the cord would let him this time. The phone barely rings once before he hears your sweet voice.
“Hello?”
“Hi,” Eddie says as he brings up his free hand to rub at the back of his neck. “I-Is this a good time?”
“Oh.” Eddie hears the surprise in your voice when you realize it’s him on the line. You didn’t expect him to call? That seems like confirmation that you really did think he was breaking up with you. The thought makes the crack in his heart even deeper.
“I-I went by your work at lunchtime, but they said you had to go get Everett because he was sick. Is he feeling better?”
“Uh, yeah,” you answer. “I gave him something for his fever and he just fell asleep. It’s why I picked up the phone so quickly–I didn’t want it to wake him.”
“Shit, I’m sorry,” Eddie says, heaving a sigh. “I didn’t mean to bother you o-or take your time away from Everett. I guess I just wanted to see if you would be okay to talk for a few minutes after his bedtime because I just couldn’t wait until tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to tell you at lunch but you weren’t there, and I can’t go another day with you thinking I was trying to break up with you.”
There’s a beat of silence as your brain registers what he just said. To Eddie, it feels like an eternity before you speak.
“Wait. W-What?”
“Sweetheart, I am head over heels, over the moon for you. I was only going to say we should take things slow because of Everett.” Eddie isn’t sure he’s ever poured his heart out for anyone like this, let alone someone he’s only known for a few weeks. But there’s something about you that makes Eddie feel like he could tell you anything and everything–and he practically has over the nights you two have spent on the phone together.
“But you said…” You trail off as the sound of whining comes from Everett’s bedroom.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Eddie says, tone softer and lighter now. “We can talk later. Take care of your boy.”
There’s rustling on the other end of the phone before you reply. “Um, I’m staying home with him tomorrow. Y-You can call or come by after work if you want.”
“How about I call on my lunch break and see how the little dude is feeling? I don’t want to intrude if the poor kid is feeling lousy,” Eddie offers.
“Yeah, okay,” you say. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Eddie.”
“Have a good night, sweetheart.”

Everett is still sick when he wakes up the next morning. He spends most of his time curled up on the couch with his head in your lap. The gentle stroke of your fingers through his soft brown locks seems to soothe him as he rewatches the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle VHS that you’ve rewound so many times you’ve lost count. You can tell your son is feeling better as the morning goes on by the way he squirms around and talks more excitedly about what’s happening on the television.
When the telephone rings, Everett’s head pops up and he stares at the phone on the wall. Luckily, he’s shuffled off of you enough that you don’t feel bad for getting up to answer it. Still, you keep your eyes on the little one as you pick up the phone and lean against the wall–mom anxiety is always on duty.
“Hello?”
“Hey,” Eddie says, voice only slightly more confident than it was yesterday.
“Hi, Eddie.”
Everett sits up straight, eyes widening when he hears the name. Despite the mixed feelings that have been churning through your system for the past few days, a small smile graces your lips at Everett’s obvious excitement. Small chubby hands reach up and make a grabbing motion.
“Eddie! Wanna talk!”
“How’s Everett?” Eddie asks before you have a chance to say anything to your son. By the lack of clanging and scraping in the background, you can tell Eddie is on his lunch break though, so probably doesn’t have time to chat with both you and Ev.
“He’s better,” you tell Eddie. “Jealous that I’m the one talking to you right now, actually.”
This makes Eddie chuckle, and the sound sends butterflies flying throughout your whole body.
“He up for a visitor later then?” he asks.
“Honestly, I think he’d love that.” So would you, even though your heart–or is it your anxiety? — is hesitant to admit it.
“What about you?”
The question softens you a little. It reminds you of Eddie’s kind and thoughtful nature and how considerate he’s always been of how you feel. God damn it, Steve, you think. Why’d you have to interfere and mess me up more than I already was?
“Yeah,” you say, nodding your head. “I wouldn’t mind seeing your handsome face either.”
Eddie lets out an exhale and you can practically feel the apprehension releasing from his body, only to be replaced by relief.
“Great,” Eddie says, his voice more chipper than it’s been in days. “I’ll just get cleaned up once I’m off of work and I’ll be there.”
When you hang up the phone, warmth surges through your body. Eddie didn’t want to break up; he only wanted to protect your sweet son from potential disappointment. Leave it to Ev to burrow his way into your boyfriend’s heart within a matter of weeks.
Little did you know, Eddie would say the same about you.
Tumblr media
Of course, the first time Eddie experiences traffic in Hawkins is when he’s trying to get home to get ready to see you. He pulls up to a red light and lets out an irritated sigh. His head lolls to the side as he impatiently waits for the signal to go. A store on his right catches his eye and Eddie’s tongue pokes out of his mouth as he ponders the idea rolling around his brain. Deciding to head in, he flicks his blinker on and turns into the shop’s parking lot.
Eddie finds what he’s looking for almost instantly and drives back to his trailer so he can wash up and make himself look presentable for you. He toys with the thought of adding a dab of cologne, but he knows he already smells like oil and gasoline and he’s not sure the cedar scent would mix well with those.
After what seems like a lifetime, Eddie finally arrives at your place and jogs up the steps to your apartment door. A sudden feeling of apprehension bubbles up in his chest. This is the first time he’s going to see you since the misunderstanding where you hastily left with your sleeping son in your arms. Eddie hopes this time his words will come out more concise and he can convey what he really feels, not just enough vague statements that leave blanks large enough for your anxiety to fill in the rest. A giddy, infectious child’s laugh floats through the wood of the door and it brings a smile to Eddie’s face. The sound calms his nerves and gives him the push to raise his fist and knock.
Every beat of his heart from the time he knocks and the time you answer the door makes him feel like his blood is pumping too fast. But your smile when your eyes land on him has him practically melting at your feet, so maybe the rapid rush of blood is all that’s keeping him upright.
“Hi,” you say, biting your lip with a shy smile. It makes Eddie want to combust.
“Hi,” Eddie responds.
“Eddie!” Everett runs over and wraps his arms around the man’s legs. Eddie chuckles and smooths a hand over the boy’s chocolate waves of hair.
“Hey, little dude. You feeling better?”
Everett looks up and nods his head. “Yep!” Your son notices the plastic bag Eddie is holding and tries to peer inside. “Whassat?”
“Honey, let Eddie inside before you try and mug him,” you say, ushering Everett back into the apartment. Eddie chuckles as he steps inside and crouches down in front of Everett. You watch the pair of them as you close the door and there’s a fullness in your heart you’ve never felt before.
“Well,” Eddie says, setting the bag down on the floor next to him. “I heard you weren’t feeling so great, so I thought I’d bring you a little something.” He pauses and lets out a sigh. “But it seems you’re feeling better now, so I guess you won’t want it.”
“No, no, no!” Everett protests, bouncing up and down on the spot. “I do, I do want it!”
“You sure?” Eddie teases, raising his eyebrows at the boy.
“Yes!” Everett promises.
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
Your son is practically vibrating out of his skin as Eddie reaches into the bag and pulls out a Spider-Man action figure. Everett’s eyes widen and his hands come up, but don’t reach for the toy. He seems too transfixed to consciously move his arms to take it. Eddie chuckles and glances over at you.
“You like Spider-Man, right?” he asks.
Everett nods and finally reaches his little arms forward to take the doll from Eddie’s grasp.
“He’s da bess,” Everett replies, his voice revealing that his sinuses are starting to get worse again now that evening is approaching.
“What do you say?” you prompt.
“Thank yew! So’s much!” Everett flings himself forward and wraps his arms around Eddie’s neck. It’s such a strong squeeze for a little boy and it takes Eddie by surprise. He doesn’t hesitate to hug your son back, though. A large ringed hand rubs up and down his small back.
“You’re very welcome.”
Everett pulls back and stares at the toy. A grin lights up his face, dimples on full display, and runs back over to the couch. He hops up and kicks his tiny legs over the edge as he moves Spider-Man’s arms and legs into different positions.
“You didn’t have to—,” you start, but Eddie cuts you off.
“I brought something for you, too.” He pushes himself up to his feet and picks the bag back up. You’re shaking your head, but Eddie just smiles as he pulls out a Tupperware container. “Made some more of those cherry cobbler bars for you last night.”
You accept the baked goods from him and shake your head again. Eddie would’ve thought you were rejecting it if it weren’t for the soft smile on your lips.
“Okay, I’m going to ask you again. Where's the catch with you?” you ask.
“Hmm,” Eddie muses as he slips his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. “Pretty sure we’ve discovered that it’s me not being able to articulate the things I’m thinking.”
“I guess that mixed with my anxiety-riddled brain is the perfect recipe for some miscommunication, huh?”
Eddie opens his mouth to respond, but Everett lets out a sneeze loud enough to wake everyone on your floor. He looks at the boy as you check your watch and let out a sigh.
“Time for more medicine, Mister,” you announce. Everett pouts and flops back on the couch. The medicine makes him drowsy, so you know that once he takes it, he won’t be grumpy for long. “Come on, you know it makes you feel better.”
“Blech,” Everett groans as he keeps his eyes on the superhero doll in his hands.
Eddie heads towards the couch while you set the Tupperware down in the kitchen and pick up the bottle of Everett’s grape-flavored medication. The little cup it gets poured into has some medicine from this morning now sticky on the bottom of it, so you wash it out as Eddie takes a seat.
“When I was little,” Eddie tells Everett, “my uncle would give me medicine and it tasted so bad.”
“Mine too!” Everett says, pushing himself up to a seated position.
“He taught me a trick though,” Eddie says. “If I pinched my nose closed, I couldn’t taste it!”
“Like if ya swimmin’?” Everett asks.
“Exactly like that!” Eddie takes his thumb and forefinger and plugs his nostrils shut to demonstrate. Everett giggles and copies the action.
“Okay, let’s test it out then,” you say as you bring over the dosage for him. He still looks a little hesitant, but Eddie shoots him a wink and the boy nods his head and holds his hand out for the medicine. The new action figure gets put down on the cushion next to him so he can use the other hand to pinch his nose closed.
An amused look is shared between you and Eddie as Everett takes a deep breath to steady himself before he downs the grape syrup like you would a shot of vodka. Once he’s swallowed, Everett holds his nose for a moment longer before letting go. He pauses, determining if Eddie’s tactic worked or not. A small gasp escapes his lips as he turns to Eddie with wide eyes.
“It wasn’t icky!” he exclaims.
“Alright!” Eddie holds his hand up for a high five, which Everett returns enthusiastically. You toss the empty cup into the sink before plopping down on the other side of Everett from Eddie.
It doesn’t take long for the medicine to kick in and Everett’s eyes begin to droop. His head rests against your arm and you gently coax him into your lap so it will be easier to take him to bed without too much jostling. His clogged nose means when Everett finally does fall into a deep sleep, he’s snoring like a bear cub in hibernation. Slowly, you tighten your grip on him and rise to your feet.
“I’ll be right back,” you whisper to Eddie, who nods in return. Everett stays in his medication-induced slumber as you lay him down in his bed and tuck his powder blue blanket around him. You place his new Spider-Man action figure on top of his nightstand and gently lay his otter stuffie by his side. Some hair has flopped down into his eyes, so you brush it back and press a soft kiss to his forehead.
“Goodnight, baby.”
When you walk back out into the living room, Eddie is leaning back on the couch, fidgeting with the rings on his fingers.
You plop down in your previous spot, unsure of what to say now that Everett is no longer there as a buffer. What you really want to do is lean over and press your lips against his. You’re aware that’s not the best idea though, so you bite at your lower lip instead.
“I missed you,” Eddie finally says.
“I missed you, too.” Your voice is quiet, but you’re glad the ice has been broken.
Eddie turns towards you and leans in. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t clear about what I was trying to say at the party.”
Shrugging your shoulders, you offer him an apologetic smile. “I didn’t really let you finish.”
He scoots in a little closer to you and looks at you with those doe eyes that make your heart feel like it’s bouncing on a trampoline. When his tongue comes out to lick over his lips, all you can remember is the way it felt up against yours in the back of his van at Lover’s Lake. Was that really only a week and a half ago? It simultaneously feels like it was ages away and just happened yesterday.
“Steve put all this in your head, didn’t he?” you ask.
“Well…yeah,” Eddie admits, looking sheepish. You admire the fact that he doesn’t want to come out and throw the father of your child under the bus, even if that's where the blame belongs. “But that doesn’t mean it’s not true. I’d hate myself forever if I ever disappointed that little dude.”
The thoughtfulness Eddie continues to show towards your son only has you falling farther down the rabbit hole for him. It eases a worry you didn’t even know you had. Steve’s words to him may have some validity, but it was not his place to say any of these things to Eddie. Steve was definitely taking Everett to his next dentist appointment after pulling this.
“Steve has never been one for keeping quiet,” you tell Eddie. “And I get that he’s concerned about his son, but Everett is my son, too. I always intended to move slowly because of him.”
Eddie considers this, but you can see in his tense posture that he’s not completely mollified.
“You didn’t know I was going to be at the graduation though,” Eddie says, his shoulders slumping with a sigh. “I should’ve told you.”
“No, it was a nice surprise,” you assure him. He still doesn’t look convinced, so you reach out and take one of his hands in your own. The warmth envelops your cold fingers, and the rough calluses feel steadying and calming against your softer skin. “Everett remembering you and warming up to you instantly was nice, too. You and I just hadn’t discussed how we were going to be in front of him yet. I think that talk would’ve saved us all this confusion.”
“I swear, I wasn’t trying to end anything. I just—if Everett got attached and then for some reason this didn’t work out, I’d hate to hurt him. And I never want to cross a line. If I ever do, please call me out on it. With you or Everett.”
Your top teeth begin to worry at your bottom lip as you nod your head. An odd sensation fills your body; like you’re lightheaded and weighed down all at the same time. It isn’t because of Eddie’s words—or is it? The confirmation that he wasn’t breaking up with you—the live, in person, seeing-the-words-coming-directly-from-his-mouth confirmation, you realize, has relieved you. Relief. Relief that the pain you thought you were being forced to endure was unsubstantiated. Relief that Eddie seeing you be a mom didn’t drive him away—though that is something you still want to talk to him about. Relief and pure joy at the fact that Eddie wants to be with you. It’s dizzying, honestly. But there’s still the matter that all of this confusion was put upon you both in the first place.
“That’s why we have this talk,” you assure him, voice strong yet hushed. “Be boring adults and figure out the boundaries so we can go back to making out like teenagers.”
Eddie chuckles. “I like the sound of that.”
Taking a deep breath, you give his hand a squeeze. “I know Everett doesn’t know what dating is. His whole life he’s known there’s Daddy and Nancy, and there’s Mommy. Because he’s so young, I don’t think he’ll have a problem seeing you gradually become a part of his life. But I do think it should be gradual.”
“That’s smart,” Eddie says with a nod of his head. “None of us should be moving too fast.”
“He clearly likes you,” you say, giving a small chuckle. “I think for now though, maybe it’s better if he sees you in group settings. Like, when he sees his aunts and uncles. Every time the kids get together, they ask if Everett can make an appearance. He can get to know you as one of the gang.”
“Yeah, that sounds good,” Eddie says. “I want you to always tell me what you’re comfortable with. You’re his mom first.”
“I’m your girl too though, right?” The way you jut out your bottom lip and give him an over-the-top pout has Eddie laughing and leaning in to press a kiss to your temple.
“Baby, nothing would make me happier than that.”
“Just…one thing.” The way your body tenses and you look away from him makes Eddie nervous. There’s this niggling thing in the back of your mind and you know your brain will never let you rest until you talk about it. “Tell me honestly. Me being a mom doesn’t bother you? At all?”
“Sweetheart, no.” A frown settles onto Eddie’s face and his eyes are filled with steel sincerity. “I adore you. Every part I’ve seen of you so far, it’s only made me crazier for you. Including the mom side. I see how strong and resilient you are all while being the most compassionate and attentive mother to that wonderful little boy. You’re a damn superhero in my opinion.”
This gets a smile out of you, and that’s all it takes to wipe Eddie’s downtrodden expression away. He leans in and presses his lips against your forehead.
“Like Spider-Man?” you ask. It makes Eddie chuckle against your skin.
“Even better than Spider-Man, baby.”
“Don’t say that to Everett.”
“Mm, I’m pretty sure he knows his mom is way better.”
“Ah, see that’s a boundary,” you say, poking your finger into his chest. “You can’t lie to me.”
Eddie playfully rolls his eyes before leaning in and nuzzling his nose into the ticklish spot he’s discovered is on the side of your neck. It causes you to break out in giggles and throw your hand over your mouth so they don’t wake your sleeping son.
“Not a lie,” Eddie mumbles.
“Fine, fine,” you say.
He pulls away from your neck and Eddie sits back up straight, looking at you, his eyes shining with admiration and fondness. You’re not sure you’ll ever get used to how he looks at you. You hope you never do.
“Do you want to watch a movie?” you ask.
“Do I get to hold you?”
“Of course.” A smile comes to your lips, and you give a gentle tug on Eddie’s hand. “But get comfortable first. You’ve got to be warm in your leather jacket and boots.”
“Mm,” Eddie hums as he pushes himself off of the couch with a cheeky smile. “Coulda just said you wanted me to undress.”
“I knew you were going to say that,” you admit with a soft giggle. Warmth comes to your cheeks just at his suggestive joke; what would happen when you two finally do start going further?
Eddie takes his boots off and rests them next to your shoes by the front door and hangs his jacket on a peg attached to your hall closet. When he comes back over to the couch, he leans down and presses a kiss to your forehead before plopping down next to you–closer than before. Not close enough for your liking, though. You scoot closer to him, and he takes the hint to wrap his arm around your shoulders as you snuggle up to his side.
“Hi,” you say, tilting your head up to look at him.
“Hi,” Eddie answers. His eyes scan your face. You can tell he’s admiring you and it brings a mixture of flattery and self-consciousness at the same time. When his eyes find your lips, they stay there the longest before he finally looks back up into your eyes. “Been wanting to kiss you since I last did it,” he murmurs in a soft voice.
“So do it.”
The words barely leave your mouth before his lips attach to yours. Eddie’s hand comes up to cup the side of your face, his thumb gently caressing your cheekbone. The kiss is full of longing and reassurance, both of you wanting the other so badly and just as fiercely wanting to show each other that you’re not going anywhere. When you part, Eddie nuzzles his nose against yours.
“So, uh, movie?” he asks.
“Right.” You stand up and pick Ghostbusters out of your stack near the television and eject the tape you’ve been watching with Everett all day to pop this one in. Eddie’s arms are back around you the moment you sit down. As much as you love this movie, there’s something you’d rather be doing.
“One last boundary?”
“Mm?”
“You gotta kiss me whenever Ev isn’t around. Gotta make up for all the times we can’t, ya know?”
“Oh, you don’t have to tell me twice.”

Waiting for time to go by was excruciating. The second hand on the clock moved slower the longer you stared at it, it was as if it knew you were anxious to leave this place; anxious to join the outside world and it liked the anxiety it got from you.
You let out a deep sigh as you shifted in your chair, you had zoned in and out of today's lecture about World War II. Your history teachers had a voice that could easily be drowned out by any noise. He had no enthusiasm for any subject he taught and it showed.
You directed your attention to your best friend who sat next to you, they had been doodling in their notepad for the past twenty minutes. You knew if your teacher had called on either one of you right now you’d be doomed.
The sound of the bell ringing startled you, and you jumped in your seat. Your best friend caught sight of it and giggled, “Jesus,” you muttered under your breath as you packed up your backpack.
“We still good for tomorrow?” They ask. You both walked out of the classroom and into the hallway.
“I don’t know, my mom is still pretty pissed at me from the other day,” you commented.
“Oh yeah, I forgot about that,” they muttered. “How is all that going anyway?”
You shrugged, since the day Pedro took you to the aquarium a week ago, you had only seen him twice. He came over once to take your mother out on a date and for drinks after and he came over another time to cook dinner for your mother. Even though, he said he was making dinner for both you and your mother, you had found a way out of it. Luckily, you already had plans that night to go study with a group from class. You could tell he was trying to keep his distance, trying to respect the boundaries you have silently made. You respected that. You just weren’t sure how you felt about him still.
Your mother, on the other hand, was angry with you. Angry that you were not being so easy on him and you were angry with her. Hoping she’d be more understanding with the situation. After everything the two of you had been through, you had hoped that she would be the most understanding out of everyone.
“He’s okay,” you finally commented.
“Just okay?”
“I mean, what am I supposed to compare him to?” You sighed, “I don’t know him well enough to say he’s better than my dad or that he’s the best boyfriend my mother has ever had. So, he’s okay.” Okay was going to have be enough. For now. You were scared to say that he was great when in fact he wasn’t. Or to say that he was the worst person ever when he was a sweetheart deep down inside. His being an actor wasn’t adding to the equation. Every site you looked at, trying to find some type of dirt on the man always had something amazing to say. There was no way he was just Pedro. There had to be something.
They gave you a nod, “I think any man would be better than your dad.”
You shrugged, “I doubt that.”
You had reached the front entrance of the school building, where parents picked up their kids and where some waited for the school bus. Your best friend scanned the cars, smiling as they spotted their dad waving at them, you couldn’t help but feel envious of her. They had an amazing dad that was always there for them, one that really cared for them and protected them. You looked around, hoping that you could spot a familiar face. Yes, you had a loving mother who was always there for you, but you were repeatedly missing something.
“Let me know about tomorrow, yeah?” They said as they began walking away. You gave them a nod before waving them off. Watching as they hugged their dad inside the car, what you’d give to have something like that.
You began your walk home. It was only a twenty-minute walk and you enjoyed being able to listen to music on your walk home. Just because you listened to music on your walk home didn’t mean you weren’t paying attention to your surroundings though. You were aware of the things that were happening around you, the cars that passed by, the people you saw, and where exactly you were walking.
Meaning, that you noticed one car pass by you three times already within your walk. Immediately, you took note of the color of the car and model, hoping that maybe it was just a coincidence that you saw the exact same car three times, but it was hard to miss the big dent on the rear bumper. You doubted that there were three cars that were the exact same color, same model, with the same dent on the rear bumper that passed you all within five minutes of your twenty-minute walk.
Feeling your heart beginning to race, you picked up the pace. You glanced behind you to see the car had pulled over, you could see that there was only one person in the car. The car inched closer, giving you a better look at who was driving.
Your eyes widened when you realized who it was. Your father. He knew that you realized who he was, he put the car in park and got out of the car.
“Y/N, sweetie,” he smiled.
Don’t stop, you thought to yourself. You could hear him grunt as you continued walking down the sidewalk. Hearing the sound of the car door slamming caused you to jump slightly, you could hear the engine roaring to catch up. He slowly drove next to you, rolling down the window.
“Sweetie, please,” he began, “how about we go for a drive and talk? Just like we used to.”
“I’m not supposed to talk to you,” you hissed as you kept your eyes forward, continuing with your walk.
“Look, sweetie, the restraining order is just a piece of paper, it’s not going to keep me away from seeing my daughter. Just get in the car.”
Your house was only a few blocks away, you could run it, but running it would risk him knowing where you lived. You needed a plan and you needed one fast. There were only a few options, run back to the school and seek help there; which was the most logical and sane option. Or you run and try to lose him.
Running back to the school did have its risks with it now being further away than your house.
“I miss you, sweetie,” He called out. “I need to see you and I can’t just let some piece of paper get in the way of that! Look, I’m sorry for everything that has happened but I’ve changed!”
It was always the same exact thing. The same exact words that lost meaning years ago, but they still brought you anger.
“Go away!” You yelled before sprinting down an alley. It probably wasn’t the best choice, but you knew this alley led to a small walkway towards your street and you knew this was probably your best bet in losing your father. Once you saw the street ahead of you, you stopped to make sure you couldn’t see his car before darting across the street to your house.
Swiftly, you pulled your backpack off your shoulders before fumbling inside the pockets looking for your house keys. From the distance, you could hear a low rumble of the engine making its way down the street. “Fuck,” you muttered to yourself. Heart racing as you swore to yourself that you left your keys in the small front pocket of your backpack that was full of pencils, erasers, and random pieces of paper. You could hear the small jingle of the keys being pushed around, letting out a sigh as you felt them against your fingers. Pulling them out of your backpack and unlocking the door as quickly as you could, you made it inside just before your father's car made it past your house.
Locking the door behind you, you ran into the living room, “Mom?!” you yelled in a panic. “Please be home,” you mumbled as tears began to fill your eyes, you ran up the stairs, “Mom!?”
~~
Down the hall, in your mother's room, Pedro heard the door slam shut. For a second, he thought that maybe Yesenia's meeting had been canceled, which would’ve ruined his surprise for her. He let out a deep sigh, thinking that he could come up with some excuse as to what he was doing, maybe find something for her to do downstairs for the next hour. He got up from his position next to the pile of pieces of wood on the floor and made his way towards the door.
“Mom!?” He heard a voice yell throughout the house, his hand stopped just before he grabbed the doorknob. Thankful that it wasn’t Yesenia, but now he was filled with anxiety. Does he go out there and greet you or stay inside the room? Staying inside the room would probably be the worst thing to do, but he knew you didn’t like him all that much and he wanted to give you the space you needed. Pedro shook his head, he needed to at least let you know that he was in the house. He let out a deep sigh before turning the knob and opening the door.
“Mom?!” Pedro's heart began to race, something was wrong. He could hear the panic in your voice, and he quickly stepped out of the room. He could see you making your way up the stairs.
“Hey, Y/n!” He said in a soft tone, you jumped a little as you got to the top of the stairs. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Is my mom here?” you asked anxiously as your eyes darted around the house.
Pedro took in how wide your eyes were and how pitched your voice sounded. “N-no, she had an emergency meeting at work, she won’t be back for a while.” You took in a deep breath as your hands shook, reaching for your phone in your back pocket. “If you’re trying to call her, it won’t help that she left her phone here.”
“Fuck,” you muttered. You lifted your hands up to your head, taking in deep breaths to control your breathing. Pedro noticed your knuckles go white from gripping your phone, the way you appeared to struggle to catch your breath. He knew what was happening all too well.
“Y/N?” He softly said as he took a step closer to you. You took a step back.
“I-I,” you took in another deep breath, and you began to fumble with your hands.
Pedro took a few more steps until you were directly in front of him, taking hold of your hands, “breathe with me,” he instructed. Taking in a deep breath and holding it, you followed. “And out,” he let out his deep breath, he led you in taking a few more deep breaths before helping you down the stairs and into the living room.
You took a seat on the couch, panic still trying to make its way in. Pedro took a seat next to you, he noticed your eyes darting around, “hey, hey,” he tried to catch your attention. “Deep breath,” he coached you through another deep breath.
Everything you had thought about Pedro went out the window. Yes, you thought there had to be something wrong with the man, something that no one knows about. A dark history of some kind, but when he knew exactly what to do without asking, at that very moment, you thought maybe there wasn’t.
Hesitantly, Pedro pulled you into an embrace, holding you just enough for you to stop trembling. He didn’t ask if you wanted to talk or if you were okay, and for you, it was what you needed. You allowed yourself to be okay in his presence, to feel safe. Slowly you wrapped your arms around his waist.
Pedro wanted to jump up and down with joy but he remained calm, gently rubbing circles on your back until you had fully calmed down. The two of you remained in silence for about fifteen minutes, you felt your heart slowly regain its normal pace and your breathing began to normalize.
“You ready to talk?” Pedro asked softly.
You let go of the embrace, tears brimming your eyes once again. “I saw him today.”
Pedro didn’t have to ask who you saw, he just knew by the way fear took over your eyes earlier. He knew it was a touchy subject, a subject that he didn’t know you would talk to him about.
“H-he was at my school waiting for me,” A tear made its way down your cheek.
“We don’t have to talk about it,” Pedro suggested.
“Please don’t let him get me,” you pleaded as you looked over at Pedro. “Please.”
Pedro’s heart broke into pieces, the terror that man had put in you, if it were up to Pedro that man would never see the light of day. Pedro placed a soft kiss on the top of your head, “I won’t.” He let out a sigh, “how close did he get?” Pedro asked. He knew the terms of the restraining order that was held against your father, knowing that if he got within 40 feet he could go to jail.
You shrugged, “it was close,” you sniffled.
Pedro sighed, he knew that what you needed to do right now was calm down. He wanted to call the police right away and get the man arrested, but he knew that that was probably not the best way for Yesenia to come home. Once Yesenia came home, he’d speak to her and they’d call the police, but for now, he had other things that needed his attention.
“how about we watch a movie?” He grabbed the remote from the coffee table.
“Why are you so nice to me?” you finally said. You weren’t expecting Pedro to just stop everything and be there for you. If anything, you expected him to go back to whatever it was he was doing, leaving you alone to panic. If it were any other person, they probably would’ve done just that.
Pedro looked at you puzzled, “I-I–”
“I don’t get it,” you began, “You come in here and you act like you truly love my mother and I treat you so horribly. I do everything I can to get you to run for the hills but you’re still here. You even dealt with our mess and you’re still here.” You got up from the couch, “So why are you still here? Why do you put up with it?
He placed the remote back down, “If I’m being honest… I don’t know. I have this immense love for your mother and I… I just can’t explain it. I’d like to be there for you if you’ll allow me to. I know I can never replace your father nor will I ever be like a father to you because you may not allow it, but I would like to be a part of you and your mother's life in one way or another.”
You shook your head, “I don’t understand.”
“You don't have to,” he got up from his spot on the couch.
Tears welled up in your eyes, “this is new to me.”
“It’s new to me too.”
“It’s gonna be hard for me.” He nods, “I can’t promise anything.”
“I’m not asking you to,” he said softly.
“Alright.” You wanted to believe that you weren’t doing this for him, you were doing it for your mother. Seeing how much joy he brought her made you happy and that should be enough, right? Right. Yet, it was hard for it to just be enough. It was hard to let someone in after years of trauma, but if your mother could do it… then maybe so could you.
“Movie?” He asked again as he sat back down on the couch.
You gave him a nod, taking the spot next to him. “I hear Paddington 2 is a good movie,” you commented.
Pedro couldn’t help but chuckle, “But we have to start with the first Paddington.”
~~
Hours later, Yesenia walked into the house. Exhausted from the long meeting and anxious to see how many missed calls she had on her phone. She made her way to the living room, spotting Pedro a smile formed on her lips, “surprised to see you her-” she stopped mid-sentence as Pedro immediately shushed her. She walked around the couch, her eyes beaming as she saw her daughter laying her head on Pedro’s lap.
“She fell asleep halfway through Paddington 2, that was like two hours ago. I haven’t had the heart to wake her,” Pedro whispered. He gently combed your hair with his hands.
Yesenia sat on the coffee table in front of them, “want me to wake her?”
Pedro shook his head, “She’s had a bad day, let her rest.” He then looked up at Yesenia, “Her father was waiting for her at her school, I was waiting for you to come home so we could handle it.”
Yesenia’s heart dropped, this was one of her worst fears. “I’m sorry you have to deal with our drama, Pedro. I understand if-”
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence,” he immediately responded. “I don’t want to break up, I don’t see that happening anytime in the future.” He sighed, “I can help.”
“I couldn’t ask you to do that.”
“I’m offering,” he looked down at you before looking back up at Yesenia, “let me help.”
As much as Yesenia wanted to decline his offer, she knew she couldn’t do this alone again. She didn’t have it in her anymore, she needed the help. “Alright.”

She pressed her palm flat against the glass as she wore a wide grin. Ethan looked at her with his eyes full of love. They were on their senior trip, in Florida, and Ethan had asked her to go to the aquarium with her on their last day. The whole trip, he had been pining for her, wishing she would catch on the subtle hints he gave her.
“Aren’t they beautiful?” She asked, still looking through the glass as various fish swam by. Ethan nodded, continuing to look at her.
She turned to face him, and she kept her smile, which made Ethan’s cheeks flush pink. She glanced behind him, and she gasped before pulling Ethan to the next exhibit. He giggled excitedly as she pulled him through the crowd of people, and they stopped in a darker room, full of tanks with jellyfish. Ethan looked around, a flustered smile still on his face, and Y/N walked up to one of the tanks, pressing her face up against it. She looked like a little kid, a thrilling gaze lingered from her eyes. Her eyes followed a jellyfish, and she bent down as it swam lower.
Ethan bent down next to her, balancing on his knees. They stared at the jellyfish for a few minutes in a blissful silence.
“I wish I could live in the ocean.” She whispered. “They look so at peace, you know? Nothing to worry about,”
“Just floatin’,” Ethan joked, laughing slightly. Ethan’s phone vibrated in his back pocket, and he reached back to pull it out, receiving a text from Chad.

Ethan looked over at Y/N, who was still staring happily into the tank.

He silenced his phone, putting it back in his pocket. He cleared his throat, gaining her attention. “Can I talk to you about something?” She nodded, smiling. Just as he was about to confess, a wave of anxiety suddenly rushed over him. His cheeks turned red, and his throat started to feel tight. “S-So, what’s your favorite animal?” He redirected. She bit the inside of her cheek, looking up as she pondered. Ethan mentally slapped himself for being too afraid.
“Whale sharks.” She answered, proudly.
A little bit of his nerves washed away at her answer. “‘Whale sharks’? I’ve never had anyone answer that.” he chuckled, sitting all the way down against the wall as he situated himself. She laughed breathily, sitting next to him. It was just the two of them in the room now, sitting alone a little bit too close to each other, with the jellyfish happily swimming around.
“Oh, so I’m the first girl to answer that? You ask every girl you take to the aquarium that question?” She teased, and his ears became red. His eyes widened, and he rapidly shook his head at her.
“N-No! You’re the only girl I’ve taken!”
She let out a cackle at his panic. She rested her hand on his shoulder as she doubled over laughing, but Ethan didn’t laugh. He only stared at the contact of her hand. He felt like a teenage boy, growing giddy over a girl barely touching him.
“Why whale sharks?” Ethan asked, breaking her laughing fit.
“Because, they’re just so…beautiful. They look like they’re space, and they’re white dots are like little stars. Also, they’re really passive with people, so people dive with them all the time. You can’t touch them though, something about a protective layer they have that’s really sensitive. But, just looking at them, it’s enough. Sorry, I’m rambling,” She stopped herself, looking at Ethan. He was in pure awe, he had never heard her talk about something she loved so much before. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Because you’re beautiful.” He whispered. She quietly gasped, widened eyes. He moved closer towards her, and she gulped nervously. His pinkie finger grazed hers, and with every drop of confidence Ethan had, he wrapped her pinkie with his. “I really wanna kiss you right now,”
“In front of the jellyfish?” She whispered, half-joking. He softly chuckled at her words and reached up to hold her chin gently. He swiped his thumb over the bottom of her lip.
“I don’t think they’ll mind.” Ethan whispered back. He leaned forward while she reciprocated, and he lovingly placed his lips on her plump ones. He inhaled deeply as he felt her, all of her. He slowly moved his lips against hers and slid his hand around her, resting it on the back of her head. He pulled away, their noses still touching, and smiled at her. “I’ve wanted that, for so long.”
“Me too,” she whispered against his lips. “You should do it again,”
He smiled sweetly, before answering, “If that’s what my pretty girl wants,” He leaned forward kissing her one more time. The soft lights from the tanks illuminated both of their features and glimmered against their skin. Ethan never really thought that much of the ocean, but now, he understood how she felt. The ocean was at a level of serene, and he felt it as he kissed her. He felt as if he was drowning in the water, suffocating. She felt like the ocean, pulling him down in a useless attempt to enchant him, but he was already enchanted. She felt like the warm water against his skin, and her hair flowed as the animals did in the sea. Everything above the water was muffled and blurred, she distracted him from everything else, and he never wanted to go back. He didn’t want to go back to the world, he wanted to stay under the water, with her, and the whale sharks. He loved the ocean, he loved her.
