“Prom Queen”

I meant to post this ages ago but because I have only 2 brain cells, I completely forgot.

But I published a Stanley Barber x female OC fanfic on Wattpad!

I decided to share it on here as well (should I post it on AO3? I never go on there anymore) in case you guys might be interested. It’s hard af for me to write on my own but I’m really trying my best so if y’all like this, please let me know! Your comments mean the world to me!

Chapter 1~First in Line at the Party

Tabitha Kent was exhausted.

But she wasn't supposed to be. She was supposed to be pretty, popular, perfect. The three p's.

And now, she just didn't feel like it.

Then again, she always lied about how she felt. It was easy for her to do so because to all of the boys and her friends, she was a flawless. They never saw how much she was breaking, not even her own mother.

Her relationship with her mother was...complicated.

Tabitha knew her mom loved her. She just wanted her to the best...no matter the cost.

"Do you really think you should be having a second plate, Tabitha?"

"I think you should skip dessert tonight, Tabitha."

"Put on some more makeup, we don't want anyone to see your blemishes, do we Tabitha?"

"Stop frowning and smile, the boys love it when pretty girls smile, Tabitha."

It wasn't her mother trying to be harsh. She put as much pressure as she could on her daughter to strive for her to be better, that's all.

But Tabitha's father was not like that. Whatever her mother wanted her to do, her father made sure that she did the complete opposite. She was such a different girl when her dad was around. Tomboy, wearing whatever she wanted, no makeup, playing sports.

It was all fun and games until her dad died when she was twelve. And then her mother fully came in and turned her daughter into her perfect little porcelain doll.

And as much as Tabitha to ignore everything that's happened, it began slowly breaking down at her soul.

Her friends didn't know how often she had panic attacks in the bathroom. They didn't know how often she cried herself to sleep. They didn't know how badly she hated herself and the facade she put up in front of everyone.

But they couldn't know. No one could know. Tabitha was the popular girl in Westinghouse high school. The boys and girls flocked around her. If they knew the truth about her, it would destroy her.

"Tabitha, you alive?" The voice of her closest and only real and genuine friend, Dina, spoke up and yanked the blonde right out of her thoughts.

She shook herself out of it, giggling before nodding. "Yeah, sorry. Got distracted."

"You've been distracted a lot recently." Dina pointed out with an eyebrow raised, leaning her back against her locker.

"What can I say? I always have my head in the clouds." Tabitha laughed it off just like she always does and went to class.

Everything after that was the normal routine. Boys and girls talking to her, the former wanting to date her and the latter wanting to be just like her. Hell, sometimes it was the other way around, but the blonde wasn't complaining. She liked the attention. But it was always the same old thing, leaving her more and more emotionally exhausted.

Maybe it was for the best. Change wasn't always a good thing. If Tabitha Kent just spent the rest of her life as everyone's royal queen, everything should be fine. She just needed to suck it up and accept it.

By the time school was finally over, Tabitha felt mentally drained. She just wanted to go home and rip the damn makeup off her skin before taking a long nap.

A shame that the weather didn't seem to get the memo, as it was now pouring down and she didn't have a ride.

"Ah, shit." She muttered, staying by the door of the school to avoid getting wet.

The Kent girl knew that she could always walk home. But that would be a disaster, walking home with her hair and clothes ruined, making streaking her cheeks. Her mother would be so pissed.

She could also ask one of the boys from the football team to walk her home. But they were so obnoxious and she really didn't want to deal with anymore incessant flirting for the day.

"Need a ride?" Tabitha jumped, having been distracted once again that she didn't see an old car pull up close to where she was hiding, the window halfway rolled down to reveal Stanley Barber leaning over the passenger seat when he asked his question.

Stanley was...weird, she supposed. Always listening to music and getting high, never really had any other friend to hang out with. If the girl thought about it, she didn't think he actually did have friends. But he was definitely someone she shouldn't be affiliated with and she had never even talked to him before:

Then why was Tabitha actually feeling tempted to accept his offer and get in his car?

"I-it's okay, I can walk." The blonde said after a moment, cringing internally when she stuttered because Stanley could easily tell that she didn't want to walk.

"Really, it's no problem, Tabitha. We live a couple blocks from each other." He pointed out with an eyebrow raised, clearly making a point. She hadn't realized that they live so close to each other. "I promise you won't melt, your highness."

The last comment made her roll her eyes in annoyance but she did notice the teenage boy crack a smile when she did.

Tabitha should not be doing this. She knows she shouldn't be. This was probably almost social suicide, being affiliated with someone like Stanley, even if she was desperate for a ride.

But she just wanted to go home. She didn't want to deal with anyone else and honestly, it didn't seem like he would be so annoying like the other boys have been all day with her.

And maybe, just maybe, she felt like breaking the rules just a little bit. It was just a ride, how bad could it be?

So as if she had shook hands with the devil himself, she made her decision. The blonde ran over to his car, her hair only getting a little bit wet and pulled open the door before getting in.

She was almost immediately greeted with stench of weed, a smell she wasn't used to and tried not to wrinkle her nose at the smell.

"You ready?" The boy asked and Tabitha nodded just before Stanley started the car and drove away.

Dearest Heart (Ravus x Reader)

COME ONE COME ALL TO SOME RAVUS FLANGST BROUGHT TO YOU BY A LAMEASS (me) AS REQUESTED BY @aeciru !!!!!!

I did all aforementioned prompts despite having the option to choose just one because there just isn’t enough love for Ravus ok!!!!! I took the liberty to adjust the prompts accordingly to fit with the dialogue though.

ALSO. BOY OH BOY WAS WRITING THIS A CHALLENGE. Ravus and Luna speak in a really eloquent and flowery manner, so I did my best apply such a style and drop contractions here and there whenever I saw fit. I went back and forth with several sections here just to beef up the story and make the relationship and history with Rea more developed and fluid. (((((idk why but i felt pressured to do our boye real good)))))) (i hope i delivered)

Speaking of!!!! I read that smol Ravus was actually really nice and kind, so I wrote him as such in the beginning. He becomes the Giant Angst Bean™ that we all know and love later on.

Title was inspired by @birdsandivory who often tags posts relating to their s/o as “dearest heart.” I thought it was the most DARLING thing ever, so I hope you don’t mind that I took that as inspiration!!

Growing up within the walls of House Nox Fleuret was a privilege that not many were privy to. Luckily for you, your family maintained close ties to the royal family of Tenebrae, thus granting you access to the more personal side of the Nox Fleuret family.

Though you were shy, your parents insisted that you befriend the Nox Fleuret siblings as a show of goodwill. Something about “maintaining peace,” or whatever it was the adults often talked about.

When you were first brought to Tenebrae to meet the nation’s royal family, you were in awe of the region’s majestic architecture — was that an actual castle? — and its signature blue flora, the sylleblossom. Fenestala Manor blew you away in particular, so you were all the more enlivened when your parents explained that this would be your new living quarters.

It was a long time coming, your move to the Manor. After all, you were being groomed to become the Royal Advisor to rising generation of Nox Fleurets.

Upon your arrival at the Manor, Queen Sylva had greeted you personally with the warmest of receptions. She even offered you a brief hug after you clumsily bowed before her. The queen’s friendliness took you aback, but it made you feel all fuzzy on the inside. She was nice.

With Queen Sylva were her two children, a boy and a girl. The female of the two siblings gravitated towards you naturally. She called herself Lunafreya, and she had the sweetest eyes and kindest smile. You regarded her with awe of her beauty.

“This is my brother, Ravus,” Lunafreya introduced as she gestured for you to step closer towards her sibling.

“Welcome to Tenebrae,” Ravus greeted with a friendly smile. “I do hope you enjoy your stay here.”

The different hues in Ravus’ eyes helped you maintain eye contact with him. “H-Hello,” you mumbled timidly. “I’m (Name).”

“What a lovely name!” Lunafreya clapped her hands excitedly as she looked to Ravus. “Wouldn’t you agree, Brother?”

Ravus nodded. “Indeed it is.”

You immediately blushed under their compliments. “Thank you,” you managed to let out, feeling the last of your discomfort crawl away from your skin. These two were good people, you could tell. Even though they were royalty, they welcomed you into their home — into their lives — with open arms.

That was the start of your allegiance to the royal family of Tenebrae.

“Princess,” you called. “It’s time for your lessons.”

“Oh (Name),” Lunafreya hummed from her bedroom. “Can’t we skip for once? Please?”

It had been several years since your life had first become interwoven with that of House Nox Fleuret’s. Since your initial meeting, you had only grown closer to both Lunafreya and Ravus at varying degrees.

Lunafreya was almost always attached to your hip. If she wasn’t busy with her duties, she was accompanied by Gentiana. Otherwise, she was often around you. You had come to love her like a sister and would do anything to keep that divine smile on her face.

On the other hand, you had also forged a very formidable friendship with the elder Nox Fleuret. You were closer to Ravus in age, so naturally, the two of you found a lot of things in common. In the years you had spent getting to know him, you had come to realize that Ravus was very much like his mother.

Unbelievably kind.

Incredibly accommodating.

So, so warm.

You were honored that Ravus felt safe enough around you to let his guard down and not just be himself, but also show his softer side to you.

You wanted to think that you were at least somewhat special to him in that regard.

These days, you weren’t sure what to make of the butterflies that went wild in your tummy whenever you were around Ravus, but spending time with him always made you giddy and caused your heart to race. It was hard not to smile in his presence.

“Your mother would have my head if I allowed another absence, Princess.”

“She would not!” the young blonde retorted as she fixed her fringe in place. “Mother is much too nice for such barbaric extremes.”

“Perhaps not,” you replied, a teasing smile sneaking its way onto your face, “but if Her Highness won’t have my head, then it will be your brother who may scold me if I continue to be soft on you.”

“That won’t happen,” Lunafreya assured you, a knowing smirk on her otherwise delicate face. “Ravus adores you.”

You immediately flushed at her statement. “H-He…! He does not!”

“Oh, but he does. In fact, Ravus-”

“Are you speaking ill of me again, dearest sister?” Ravus’ voice interrupted from the doorway.

You spun around to face him, feeling embarrassed that he had nearly caught onto what his sister had been insinuating. “My Prince!” You bowed before him, trying to keep the warmth in your cheeks at bay.

“At ease,” he said, placing a gentle hand on your shoulder to set you upright again. “How many times must I insist that ‘Ravus’ is enough?”

“My apologies.”

“And how many times must I defend my honor in front of you, brother dearest?” Lunafreya challenged teasingly, staring indignantly at her older sibling with her hands on her hips. “When have I ever spoken ill of you?”

“If we count all the instances,” he said, “then you will most surely miss your lessons, and we cannot allow that, now can we?”

Ravus glanced at you then, his dual-colored eyes holding a playful glint. You took this as a sign to usher your charge out the door and off to her obligations.

“I-Indeed, we cannot!”

Lunafreya threw her hands up in the air, exasperated. “Ah, I can only take so much when the two of you bully me together! Off I go, then.”

“We-! We weren’t bullying you, Lady Luna-” Your impending apology was cut short with the realization that Lunafreya had already left. Flustered, you turned to Ravus and asked, “She’s not… She’s not angry with me, is she?”

Ravus chuckled, waving his hand to dismiss your fears. “Fret not, dear (Name). My sister merely jests.”

You let out a sigh of relief. “Lady Lunafreya will be the death of me one of these days.”

“As she will be for me, as well.”

His reply caused a few giggles to escape your lips. Once your small bout of laughter tapered, you found Ravus to be looking at you with what appeared to be fondness in his eyes. His gaze made you blush, so you opted to break the silence by bringing the attention back to him.

“So how may I be of service of you today, my Prince?” you asked, returning to your well-mannered front.

Ravus sighed at your ignorance of his name yet again. “Yes, I’ve come to you in need of a favor, actually.”

“Oh? A favor?” You looked at him questioningly, your curiosity piqued. “I will do my best to be of assistance to you, my-”

“Ravus,” he repeated sternly, though his eyes remained tender. “When we are in private, kindly refer to me by my name.”

‘I take it back,’ you thought, feeling your cheeks burn all the more thanks to Ravus’ sweet plea. ‘It is the prince who will be the death of me, not the princess.’

“R-Ravus,” you tested, feeling lighter at the sight of elation on the prince’s face upon the utterance of his name from your mouth.

“Much better.”

You had to keep it together to stop yourself from swooning at his dazzling smile. At the age of 15, Ravus had grown well into his body, and by the looks of it, he would only continue to grow as the years go by. His face had matured some from the time when you first met as children, and while his features sharpened, his kindness had not wavered.

Especially not around you.

“U-Um… Ravus. Ahem. What is this favor you speak of?”

“You have heard of the upcoming ball, have you not?”

“Ah, yes.” You nodded, thinking back on the invitations you had glossed over just a few days prior. “The one celebrating our nation, correct?”

“That is the one. May I ask if you will be preoccupied then?”

You did a mental scan of your duties and responsibilities leading up to the ball. “I may need to assist Lady Lunafreya,” you answered, “but otherwise, I will be present at the sidelines in the event that my aid is needed for the remainder of the night.”

“I don’t suppose you would like to attend as a guest of the family?” Ravus quietly proposed.

Your brows furrowed. What need of Ravus required you to attend as a guest of House Nox Fleuret? You would already be present at the ball anyhow, so the invitation seemed odd as it was rather unnecessary.

Regardless, attending as a guest of House Nox Fleuret meant that the festivities would at least be a little more entertaining, what with the company of Lunafreya and Ravus making everything a little more enjoyable.

It also meant that you would by their side for most of the night, and that alone seemed more appealing than having to lurk in the shadows by yourself.

“That is a very generous offer, my- Ravus.” You winced at how your correction made it sound like you had referred to the prince as ‘yours,’ but you trudged on, hoping he hadn’t taken notice of your slip up. “I would be honored to-”

You were stopped by Ravus clearing his throat. “I’m afraid I failed to clarify.” Dusting off imaginary dirt from his sleeve, he added, “Would you be willing to attend the ball as my guest?”

You blinked up at him, caught off guard at the offer. “A-As…? As your…?”

He huffed a little uncharacteristically. “As my date.”

“Ah.”

An awkward silence enveloped the room. On your part, you were unsure as to how to respond to Ravus’ request. While there was no denying that you would be more than happy to accompany him to the ball — as his date, no less — when it came right down to it, you were torn between your personal sentiments towards the prince and what was expected of you as his Royal Advisor.

Perhaps it was because you were in your teenage years — being just a year younger than Ravus — but it was quite evident to you that you had begun to develop some feelings for your charge. It was a bit of a pickle for you, because it became a challenge having to keep your feelings at bay without crossing the line of what was considered proper.

Though your relationship with the Nox Fleuret family was definitely friendly and familiar, it was still encased in decorum and your respective obligations not just to each other, but to the nation of Tenebrae as well.

Thus, Ravus’ proposal practically blindsided you. You weren’t so naive as to presume he harbored some sort of romantic feelings for you as well, but you could hope, couldn’t you? He wasn’t required to bring a date to the ball; you knew, because you helped piece the occasion together. So what was he doing here, asking you of all people to come with him?

Your nerves and apprehension over how to approach Ravus’ offer must have shown on your face, as he immediately backtracked, saying, “You are not obligated to accept, of course.” Was he worried that you would only say yes because you thought you had to? “I am well aware that such gatherings are not to your taste. Thus, my request may be more of a nuisance than anything, so-”

“Yes.”

Ravus’ rambling came to a halt. “I… beg your pardon?”

“Yes, Ravus.” You gave him a bright smile, hoping it would convey enough of your feelings for him to understand. “I would be delighted to accompany you to the ball, if it won’t be too much trouble for you.”

His shoulders practically sagged in utmost relief. “No, never,” he said as a small smile began to bloom on his face. “You are not an inconvenience in the slightest.”

“So…” You looked away, feeling bashful over the how things had unfolded. “I shall see you then, my Prince?”

“You do me the greatest honor.” Ravus reached out to you and delicately grasped your hand in order to lay a soft kiss on it. “I shall see you then, my (Name).”

“Ex-Excuse me?” you blubbered, feeling your cheeks grow even warmer. “Your (Name)?”

“It’s only fair, is it not?” he asked, a teasing lilt in his voice. “I am your Ravus, and so in return, you are my (Name).”

“Th-That’s-!”

“I shall see you at the ball, dearest heart. Good day.”

And with that, Ravus not only left you a flustered mess, he took with him the rest of your heart as well.

You didn’t really mind, though.

You often look back on that time with much fondness and love. The ball was boring as expected, but being by Ravus’ side for the entirety of the night made it much, much more tolerable. Lunafreya sending the two of you some smug smiles also made for some amusement that night.

Despite the fact that you came as Ravus’ date, neither of you initiated the step to further your friendship into a romance. Both of you merely skirted around your feelings, too shy to do anything beyond the confines of your personal and professional lives together.

Lunafreya often urged you to take the initiative and allow the love between you and her brother to prosper, but you always evaded her prodding. In spite of Lunafreya’s unabashed approval and support, you believed that you were in no position to present your feelings to Ravus and expect some sort of reciprocation in the form of a romantic relationship.

No, you wanted it to come from him. You were merely his advisor and a childhood friend at best. There was no way you were going to burden him with your feelings, not when you were unsure if this was what he really wanted with you. If he was not going to take the step forward, then you would adjust to his pace, as you have done all these years.

You were content with remaining by his side. Whether it be as his advisor, his friend, or his lover… so long as you were with him, then that was more than enough for you.

Things changed just a year later with the death of Queen Sylva and the imperial control of Niflheim over Tenebrae.

Now, years later, you still remain by Ravus’ side. Many things have since changed, such as Lunafreya’s appointment as the new Oracle, as well as Ravus’ new occupation under Niflheim’s invasion.

No longer was he the prince of Tenebrae. Now, he was known as Ravus Nox Fleuret, the High Commander of the Imperial Army.

You still referred to him as your prince, though. Ravus would merely ignore the title as if you had never said it in the first place.

After the death of Queen Sylva, Lunafreya had pleaded with you to place your focus on her brother rather than on herself. You had objected, arguing that both she and Ravus were your responsibility. However, the young girl proved to you just how mature she was beyond her years when she countered that Ravus needed you more than she did.

“There is only so much that I can do for him,” she had admitted to you tearfully. “But you… you are his heart. Please, (Name), I beg of you. Please do not leave my brother’s side.”

“Lady Lunafreya…” You had held onto her as she fell apart in your arms. Right then and there, you swore that you would remain steadfast in your devotion to Ravus regardless of what life would throw at you.

“I promise.”

If only it were so easy.

At present, the young boy you came to know and love was nonexistent in the Ravus that stood before you today. Gone were the warm smiles and gentle eyes, now replaced by hardened glares and permanent scowls.

The death of his mother had clearly changed Ravus. Though you held him close to your heart, you struggled to reach him beyond the icy walls he had put up around his own heart. Still, you stood by him and remained at his side amidst all the changes he went through.

“My Prince,” you murmured timidly, stepping into Ravus’ office. “Your sister requests your presence for supper.”

“Tell her to proceed with her meal,” replied Ravus from a pile of papers he had not looked up from.

“My Prince, if I may.” Shutting the door behind you, you made your way across the room and settled in front of his desk. “It’s been several days since you last shared a meal with Lady Lunafreya. She merely misses your company, and-”

“How many times must I tell you?” Ravus abruptly stood up and sent you a cold glare. Though you had become used to such painful gazes, you had to admit that they still pierced at your heart rather agonizingly. “I am no longer a prince, and you must address me accordingly by my new title instead.”

It was hard to keep your face neutral when the sadness in your heart overflowed for Ravus.

“My apologies, High Commander,” you muttered softly, offering a bow. “Old habits die hard, I suppose.”

“If only some would die easier than others,” you heard him grumble under his breath.

His harsh tone made you wince, but you did nothing to address his statement. Sending him an affirmative nod, you said, “I bid you a good evening, then, High Commander.”

Noticing your wounded look, Ravus softened his voice and called out to you almost apologetically. “Have you forgotten?” He combed a hand through his hair, which had grown much longer over the years. “I am Ravus to you in private.”

So there was still a bit of the old Ravus somewhere in there. The thought made you smile, albeit a bit sadly.

“Please don’t forget to eat something, Ravus.” Your eyes softened as they met his. “Feel free to summon me if my help is required.”

At that, you made yourself scarce, unaware of the look of longing in Ravus’ eyes as he stared after you.

Just a few hours later, Ravus had called for you once more, requesting for dinner. You delivered his meal to his office without a word, only to be stopped by him as he requested that you join him and have a bite as well.

“I’ve already eaten, Ravus.”

“Would you do me the honor of gracing me with your company, then?” He pulled out a chair for you, the hard strain in his eyes growing tender for a few moments.

Only you still got to see this side of Ravus. Only you could do this to him.

“It would be my pleasure.”

The two of you sat there in his office, basking in the quiet. Though no words were shared, the company you offered each other made for a fairly pleasant night.

When word of Lunafreya’s imminent union with Prince Noctis of Insomnia came to light, you grew worried. Not just for Lunafreya, but for Ravus as well. Ever since the death of his mother, he had come to loathe the Caelum line and, in effect, Noctis himself.

His bitterness and rage towards the Lucian royal family had consumed him over the years. You had seen firsthand how such dark thoughts and feelings had changed Ravus, so with the announcement of his sister’s engagement to the Crown Prince, you became distraught over how your own prince would handle the news.

One day, you noticed the younger Nox Fleuret carrying a suitcase as she made her way across Fenestala Manor. She appeared to be dressed for travel, prompting you to wonder what her intentions were. As far as you knew, Lunafreya had no meetings scheduled for today. She made no mention of going out, either.

With your brows furrowed, you caught up to her and asked, “Princess, where are you off to?”

“(Name)!” she squeaked in surprise. “I am in need of your help, kind (Name). Please, allow me to leave as I must speak to King Regis immediately!”

“King Regis…?” you repeated, trying to process the growing urgency on her face. “Is this about your engagement to Prince Noctis?”

“It is more than that.” Lunafreya nodded, taking ahold of your hand. “Please, (Name), I must make my way to Insomnia as soon as possible. Will you assist me?”

Your mind scrambled to sort out your thoughts. “I… I cannot, my Princess,” you informed her regretfully, feeling a pang at the frown that took residence on her face. “But it is only because I swore that I would remain by your brother’s side. You remember, do you not?”

“Of course I do. I am eternally grateful for your honor and devotion to Ravus.”

You bit your lip, sending a prayer to the gods above that all would work well. “Still, I cannot simply abandon you in your time of need.” You pulled her to the side and stealthily made your way to the lower floors of the manor. “I may not be able to escort you to Lucis, but I can at least ensure that you find your way out of Tenebrae.”

Lunafreya’s expression brightened at your words. “Thank you, (Name). I owe you.”

“You owe me nothing. Now come, we must make haste.”

Both you and Lunafreya had evaded the imperial guards that monitored the hallways of the manor. Just as you were nearly at the door, the two of you were stopped by none other than Ravus himself.

Snatching Lunafreya from your grasp, he dragged her towards a nearby room, but not before sending you a scathing look.

“And you,” he snarled, “I will have a word with you once I have settled things with my sister.”

The dread that churned at the pit of your stomach almost hurt as more as the pain in your heart due to Ravus’ anger directed towards you.

“What were you thinking?!” he barked, slamming the door of his office.

You opted to create a small distance between you and Ravus, growing cautious of his boiling rage. Drawing closer to his desk, you answered, “I merely offered my assistance where it was needed, Ravus. It is as I have done for you and your family all these years.”

Ravus sneered at your response. “Were you foolish enough to allow Lunafreya into the clutches of our mother’s murderer?”

The neutral mask you wore began to crumble with the beginnings of a frown. “Ravus, I understand that you blame King Regis for the death of our queen, but-”

“Understand? You think you understand?”

This was the first time you had ever truly been on the receiving end of Ravus’ fury. It wounded you deeply, causing you to wither away at his spiteful voice. His build, which had grown sturdier even more, now felt menacing as he towered over you.

Still, you reminded yourself of your promise to Lunafreya, no matter how much Ravus was now hurting you.

“You think you understand what my sister and I have been through?” he continued with a scoff. “Are you so stupid to believe that you are so special simply due to our history together?”

Your eyes began to water by then, but you remained rooted in your spot. “I-I…”

“If that is what you believe,” he snapped, “then you are much more idiotic than I thought you to be.”

This time, you flinched. You kept your head bowed in order to hide the steady stream of tears that rolled down your face. “R-Ravus, please…” you hiccuped, “I know you are hurting, but please…”

“YOU KNOW NOTHING!”

A sob threatened to escape your throat, but you slapped a hand over your mouth to keep it in. “Please,” you whimpered pathetically, “do not hurt me like this, Ravus.”

Your plea seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, for Ravus broke you down even further with one simple but cruel statement.

“I do not need you any longer.”

“Wh-What?”

“You are hereby dismissed of your duties,” he continued, voice devoid of emotion. “Until a more suitable role for you can be found, you will remain at the manor for the time being.”

You were openly weeping by now. “Ravus, you cannot mean this.”

“I do,” he retaliated coldly. “Now get out.”

You lifted your pain-stricken gaze, only to pull away the moment your eyes met Ravus’ seething glare. Where was the Ravus you loved? This wasn’t him. The Ravus you loved wouldn’t hurt you so brutally without any heed to your sensitive emotions. The Ravus you loved wouldn’t strip you of the one thing that gave your life meaning throughout the years.

What were you to do now, if you could not remain by his side?

Sniffling, you shuffled your way towards the doorway where Ravus stood. You lowered your head once more as you bumped against him. But, before taking your leave, you offered some parting words to Ravus that would haunt him forevermore.

“You… You will always be my heart, dear Ravus. I pray that you find peace and happiness.”

In the days leading to Lunafreya’s escort to Lucis, you steered clear of both her and Ravus. Ultimately, you were no longer bound to them, at least by Ravus’ words.

‘I have failed you, my Princess,’ you thought glumly, looking up at the night sky. ‘How can I remain by your brother’s side if he no longer wants me there?’

Soon, Fenestala Manor grew quiet with the departure of the remaining Nox Fleurets as they traversed to Insomnia. It didn’t take long before news of the nation’s fall reached your region, causing you to plunge into a pit of despair as the tragedy sent a blow to your very core.

King Regis, dead. Even the sweet Prince Noctis was said to have passed on. But what truly broke you was the news that your dearest Lunafreya was gone as well.

Maria, who had remained in your company the past few days, could do little to console you as you drowned in your hysteria. This couldn’t be true. You refused to believe it. No, Lunafreya was still alive. She had to be.

And what of Ravus? Where was he now? Had he fallen amidst Niflheim’s betrayal as well?

You didn’t know what to do with yourself.

‘Please,’ you begged to the heavens above, ‘please, keep them safe. They’re all I have.’

Some of your worries had been eased at the return of Ravus. Though he retained his cold demeanor, he brought with him a new prosthetic — one that you couldn’t help but marvel at as you stood before him in his office yet again.

Though news of his arrival had reached you, you had forced yourself to remain at your quarters and not seek him out. With the memory of your last conversation still painfully fresh, you chose not to look for Ravus, providing him the space and privacy he had forcefully set between the two of you.

Your efforts were put to rest when Ravus himself summoned you. Here you now were, avoiding his gaze as you fidgeted nervously in front of him.

The silence was incredibly overbearing, but you feared that if you spoke, he would only lash out at you again. Thus, you kept mum, giving Ravus the floor to voice his thoughts, whatever they may be.

At first, he sighed. Then, with a few careful steps, he approached you. Raising a hand — from his flesh limb, notably — he caressed the side of your cheek in a motion so affectionate, you had to question if this was really the same Ravus you had last perceived before the blatant dismissal of your obligations to him.

“You appear well,” he commented softly, his hand leaving your face.

You couldn’t help but long for his touch. Still, all you could do was nod, feeling as if your voice and words would merely betray you if you tried to speak.

“I…” You could hear his fists clench. “Will you look at me? Please?”

At this, you lifted your gaze to meet his eyes. Based on the memory of your last meeting, you had expected to see bitter rage in his stare. You were proven wrong, however, as you found nothing but throbbing emotion looking back at you.

There it was. The same fondness he used to look at you with. The same tenderness and affection his dual-colored eyes had always revered you in.

There was also one other thing you found in his soft gaze, but you dared not voice your thoughts in fear that you were simply dreaming.

In his eyes, you found love.

“I am sorry.” His voice broke. The last time you were a witness to Ravus’ tears was shortly after the death of his mother. Now, such waterworks were making a return, though you found it hard to fathom that these tears were due to his own grieving for you.

“I was wrong,” Ravus went on, reaching out to you but stopping short, as if he was afraid you would reject him. You eased his fears by meeting him halfway, reaching up on your heels to hold his face in your hands. “I do need you, (Name). I will always need you.”

His hands enveloped yours as you both cried for each other. “Ravus…”

“I meant none of it. Not a single word I had uttered that day held any truth. Please, believe me.”

“I know, Ravus,” you sobbed. “I know.”

You don’t know what it was that had happened to him in Insomnia to cause this sudden turnaround in Ravus, but you weren’t going to question it. All that mattered was that he was here now, with you.

“I realize now that it was I who was the foolish one. It was always me. Never, ever you.” This large man, whose mere presence held a threatening aura towards his foes, was now a snivelling mess in your hands. “I beg for your forgiveness.”

“There is nothing to forgive,” you assured him tenderly, wiping away the tears that had leaked during your exchange of words. “I am relieved that you, too, are well.”

“I will never forgive myself for hurting you that day,” he admitted, pulling you closer. You felt your lip quiver as you recalled the relentless words he had directed to you back then.

You shook your head, trying to rid yourself of such memories. “None of that,” you told both Ravus and yourself. “What matters is that you are here now.”

“There is so much that has been lost, but I will not allow you to be lost to me as well. Not anymore.” He paused for a bit, moving his grasp from your hands to your face, albeit hesitantly. “What you said then, did you mean it?”

“Mean what?”

“You… You own my heart, (Name),” he confessed at last, leaning his forehead on yours. “I would like to know if your sentiments remain the same, though I know I am undeserving of them.”

A sweet smile began to surface amidst your tears. Carefully bringing your face closer to his, you whispered against his lips, “You are my dearest heart, Ravus, as you have been and always will be. Nothing will change that.”

What lay ahead seemed bleak, what with Niflheim’s rise and the still unknown whereabouts of Lunafreya. But, as you remained glued to Ravus, your mouth locked with his in a passionate exchange, all you could do was melt into him and allow your feelings of love to come undone once and for all.

Come what may, you would remain by his side until the very end. What made it easier this time around was the knowledge that he would do the same for you.

At the end of the day, it was just as Lunafreya had told you all those years ago. You were his heart, just as he was yours.

Corazón de hermanas, de Evelyn Susana Leandro Manuel, es el ganador del Premio José Rovirosa al Mejor Documental Estudiantil Mexicano 2020

El documental No doy risa de Rodrigo Moisés Bazán Bautista, es el ganador del Premio del Público

Desde 1997 la Dirección General de Actividades Cinematográficas (DGAC) y la Escuela Nacional de Artes Cinematográficas (ENAC) de la UNAM, crearon un premio para recordar y destacar la trayectoria del documentalista y maestro José Rovirosa, con el objetivo de apoyar y distinguir a lo mejor del documental que se hace en México. Posteriormente, desde hace doce años, implementó el premio a lo mejor de este género realizado por estudiantes de nuestro país.

Entre los documentalistas que han obtenido el Premio Rovirosa a Mejor Documental Mexicano se encuentran talentos, hoy unánimemente reconocidos, como Carlos Marcovich, quien obtuvo el premio (Ex aequo) en 1998 por ¿Quién diablos es Juliette?; Adele Schmidt, por Tierra menonita (2000); Everardo González, quien lo ha conseguido en tres ocasiones: Los ladrones viejos (2007), Cuates de Australia (2011) y La libertad del diablo (2017); Eugenio Polgovsky por Los herederos (2009); Betzabé García por Los reyes del pueblo que no existe (2016); Daniela Rea Gómez por No sucumbió la eternidad (2018) y Michel Ibaven y Sergio Blanco con Cuando cierro los ojos (2019).

El hecho de que estos documentales hayan obtenido, posteriormente, galardones en diversos festivales nacionales e internacionales da cuenta también del prestigio y profesionalismo de los diferentes académicos, críticos y realizadores que han fungido como Jurado en cada una de las ediciones, lo que también ha contribuido a consolidar la relevancia del Premio.

En la edición de este año el Jurado para la categoría de Mejor Documental Mexicano (en el que se recibieron 18 trabajos), constituido por Guadalupe Miranda, Michelle Ibaven (co ganadora del Premio en 2019) y Meghan Monsour decidió otorgar el Premio José Rovirosa 2020 al Mejor Documental Mexicano, al filme Volverte a ver, de Carolina Corral Paredes, “Por su impresionante y valiente argumentación, Volverte a ver es una película urgente, sutil pero brutal. Como espectadores nos pone en un espacio privilegiado de una terrible realidad que confrontan las familias de desaparecidos todos los días en este país. Nos mete en las fosas comunes y nos revela la impericia, negligencia e indolencia de las autoridades. Nos deja conocer a mujeres sobrevivientes con una fortaleza espléndida e incansable”. El documental ganador recibe un premio de sesenta mil pesos y una réplica, en plata, de una cámara de cine.

El jurado también otorgó menciones honorificas a los siguientes trabajos: Cosas que no hacemos, de Bruno Santamaría Razo; ¿Qué les pasó a las abejas?, de Adriana Otero y Robin Canul y Negra, de Medhin Tewolde Serrano.

Por su parte, el Jurado de la categoría Mejor Documental Estudiantil: Diego Rodrigo Ruiz Velázquez (ganador del Premio en 2019), Luna Marán y Mariana Rodríguez, determinó otorgar el Premio José Rovirosa 2020 al Mejor Documental Estudiantil Mexicano a Corazón de hermanas, de Evelyn Susana Leandro Manuel, “porque es una película que con una gran sencillez logra dar un golpe al corazón desde el amor”. El premio otorgado consiste en treinta mil pesos y una réplica, en plata, de una cámara de cine.

Asimismo, el jurado de la categoría Mejor Documental Estudiantil, determinó otorgar tres Menciones Honoríficas a: Kunami Che’e: Envolverse con la nagua, de Aymara Larson Rivero; Temblores, de Kaleb García y Ahuaques, los duendes del agua, de Saudhi Batalla y Aarón Álvarez.

En la edición de 2019, con el apoyo y colaboración de Cultura en Directo UNAM, se instauró el Premio del Público y para este 2020 participaron los 23 trabajos inscritos en la categoría Mejor Documental Estudiantil Mexicano y se exhibieron en la plataforma Cultura en Directo (https://culturaendirecto.unam.mx/2-festival-jose-rovirosa-de-documental-en-linea-2020/), dentro del 2° Festival José Rovirosa de Cine Documental en Línea.

El documental con más votos del público -319 de un total de 2438- fue para el titulado No doy risa, de Rodrigo Moisés Bazán Bautista. Recibe un premio de diez mil pesos y una réplica, en plata, de una cámara de cine.

Con la entrega de este Premio, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México refrenda su compromiso con el gremio, no sólo en la formación de cineastas, sino también en el reconocimiento del género documental al otorgar este tipo de incentivos y difundirlos en sus salas y espacios cinematográficos.

En boca de Pilatos (Juan, 18:38), la pregunta retórica que sirve de título sugiere un extendido escepticismo con respecto a la verdad. Los tres libros aquí reseñados confrontan tal actitud escéptica desde la perspectiva de la tradición «analítica» en la filosofía contemporánea. El libro de Simon Blackburn tiene ambiciones divulgativas. El de Harry G. Frankfurt es una secuela de su éxito de ventas On Bullshit (publicado en nuestro país por la misma editorial), en que definía como manifestaciones de desprecio o desinterés hacia las virtudes intelectuales vinculadas a la verdad los actos que en inglés se clasifican con ese término de tan difícil traducción («chorrada» es una traducción –quizás inapropiada en cuanto a registro– que viene a las mientes cuando se consideran casos paradigmáticos de aplicación de «bullshit», como el de aquella notoria ministra del PP que, preguntada por sus razones para insistir en que las bombas en los trenes del 11-M las había puesto ETA, «argumentó» en su respuesta que los etarras son asesinos y es propio de los asesinos matar). El libro de Bernard Williams, por su parte, se sitúa entre las obras más importantes de uno de los más prominentes filósofos contemporáneos.

Williams dice haber considerado denominar «escépticos» o «subvertidores» a quienes comparten la actitud de Pilatos, pero finalmente ha decidido utilizar un término menos halagador –«negadores»–, entiendo que con el sentido que se le da a la noción en la terapia psicológica, cuando se dice de alguien en inglés que está en un estado de denial: se resiste a aceptar verdades que alguien en su situación cognoscitiva está en posición de conocer, y sólo sus barreras emocionales se lo impiden. Aunque Frankfurt no usa el más neutro «escéptico», comparte esta visión poco halagüeña del negador que Williams presupone al denominarlo así (pp. 48-59).

Los tres autores ponen de relieve el carácter paradójico de la actitud negadora, pues el sarcasmo con que el negador desprecia elogios –como el de Frankfurt en On Bullshit– de virtudes tales como el cuidado en la búsqueda de justificaciones para las propias creencias y la honestidad al someterlas a la consideración de aquellos a quienes se pretende transmitirlas (esas virtudes que descaradamente desprecia la respuesta de la ministra), lo dirige típicamente el mismo negador también a la retórica del poder, aduciendo quizás ejemplos como el de la ministra en cuestión o el de la administración estadounidense en la justificación de la guerra de Irak. La paradoja está en que esa sospecha ante el poder presupone una estimación del conocimiento genuino y de los medios para alcanzarlo que se encuentra vedada a la actitud negadora. Los tres autores señalan el carácter desestabilizador de esta paradoja propia de nuestra cultura. En palabras de Williams, la cuestión filosófica que ello suscita es: «¿Es posible formular intelectualmente las nociones de verdad y veracidad de modo que lo que entendemos por verdad y nuestras posibilidades de alcanzarla pueda hacerse corresponder con nuestra necesidad de veracidad?» (p. 15).

La gran mayoría de los filósofos analíticos que se han ocupado de estas cuestiones han suscrito una de las dos formas más características que suele adoptar la actitud negadora. La primera de ellas tiene su origen en las raíces de una parte de la tradición analítica en el pragmatismo estadounidense. Esta concepción identifica la verdad con lo cognoscible, o lo racionalmente aceptable, presuponiendo condiciones pragmáticas (condiciones sobre nuestros intereses y propósitos) respecto de qué es cognoscible o aceptable racionalmente. Quizá los más influyentes representantes contemporáneos de este punto de vista sean Hilary Putnam y Richard Rorty. La otra forma que asume la actitud negadora constituye un refugio natural para quienes, por un lado, aceptan la fuerza última de la concepción pragmatista de la verdad pero son sensibles, por otro, a las dificultades que a continuación señalaré. Se adopta, entonces, una concepción de la verdad que se califica de «deflacionaria» o «minimista», propuesta ya por Gottlob Frege en el inicio de la tradición analítica y desarrollada después por el lógico polaco Alfred Tarski y por quien muchos consideran el más importante filósofo analítico: Willard Quine.

Para Rorty, la verdad es lo que aceptan nuestros pares culturales cualificados. Hay ámbitos respecto de los cuales este punto de vista es muy razonable –por ejemplo, el de la verdad sobre el contenido de las novelas o de las películas–, pero esos ámbitos tienen características que los distinguen nítidamente, en cuanto a la cuestión en litigio, del ámbito de la verdad empírica. En el caso de las novelas y las películas, es de esperar que la verdad de los juicios sobre sus contenidos se encuentre constreñida por las capacidades de apreciación de individuos como aquellos a cuya apreciación están destinadas; no es razonable suponer que sean verdaderos (o falsos) juicios respecto del contenido de una novela, aunque ningún apreciador potencial sea capaz de establecerlo así, ni siquiera en condiciones ideales. Esa asimetría descalifica la propuesta pragmatista para el caso de la verdad sobre la realidad externa. ¿Por qué habría de verse constreñida la verdad sobre cuántos árboles había en Canadá hace exactamente quince mil años, o cómo accedieron los primeros humanos al continente americano, por lo que seamos capaces de averiguar seres con nuestros intereses y manifiestas limitaciones cognoscitivas?

Ante estas dificultades, negadores como Rorty o Putnam han adoptado la concepción minimista de la verdad propuesta por clásicos de la tradición analítica como Frege y Tarski, Strawson o Quine, desarrollada contemporáneamente por autores como Robert Brandom, Hartry Field o Paul Horwich. Hay diversas versiones de la concepción, porque proponer una formulación precisa y adecuada comporta decisiones técnicas sobre cuestiones en absoluto triviales. Pero la idea central es sencilla. Si se nos pone en el brete de responder a la pregunta de Pilatos, lo más natural sería balbucear respuestas como ésta: «Mire, Castellar de n’Hug está en Cataluña, así que es verdad que Castellar de n’Hug está en Cataluña; no está en Extremadura, así que es falso que Castellar de n’Hug esté en Extremadura; el hombre no llegó a la Luna hasta el siglo XX, así que es verdad que el hombre no llegó a la Luna hasta el siglo XX, y es falso que el hombre llegara a la Luna en el siglo XIX; y así sucesivamente».

Las decisiones técnicas antes mencionadas conciernen en especial al problema que comporta «formular de una forma intelectualmente satisfactoria» el problema en cuestión y a la cláusula «y así sucesivamente» con que se cierra la cita anterior. Pero, dejándolas aquí de lado, la idea básica es que decimos que son verdaderas o falsas las cosas que aseveramos; y que, cuando decimos que una de estas cosas es verdadera, lo que venimos a decir no es (apenas) más que lo que habríamos dicho con mayor brevedad aseverando la cosa sin más. La verdad es así una propiedad casi «transparente», una propiedad sin apenas sustancia propia. Si entendemos que al poner una frase entre comillas nos referimos a lo que aseveramos con ella, todo lo que hay que decir sobre la verdad lo recogeríamos perfectamente bien reformulando así la lista anterior: «L’Hospitalet de Llobregat está en Cataluña» es verdad si l’Hospitalet de Llobregat está en Cataluña, y sólo lo es en ese caso; «l’Hospitalet de Llobregat está en Extremadura» es verdad si l’Hospitalet de Llobregat está en Extremadura, y sólo lo es en ese caso; «el hombre no llegó a la Luna hasta el siglo XX» es verdad si el hombre no llegó a la Luna hasta el siglo XX, y sólo lo es en ese caso; etc. Adviértase que es esencial para la propuesta que, cualquiera que sea la caracterización precisa de esta lista, esté constituida por obviedades o perogrulladas como las precedentes.

Un problema inmediato para este tipo de posiciones es explicar qué función habría de desempeñar en nuestro sistema conceptual una noción tan poco sustancial. El primer paso de la respuesta usual de los minimistas es que nos permite evitar la cacofonía: si tú dices «el hombre no llegó a la Luna hasta el siglo XX» y yo quiero convenir en ello diciendo «eso es verdad», hablo con más elegancia que si repitiera las mismas palabras y, según el minimista, por lo demás no voy (apenas) más allá. Pero hay casos más interesantes. Si una teoría X consta, irreductiblemente, de infinitos enunciados, para afirmar la conjunción de todos ellos, de acuerdo con la concepción minimista, me basta decir «la teoría X es verdadera»; o si no sé qué dijo A ayer, pero por tener confianza plena en A, quiero suscribirlo, puedo hacerlo «a ciegas» aseverando simplemente que lo que dijo A ayer es verdadero.

Michael Dummett (desde una variante interesante de la concepción pragmatista objetada más arriba) enunció en los años cincuenta el problema más serio para las concepciones minimistas, el indicio más claro de que no recogen adecuadamente nuestra concepción implícita de la verdad. Las definiciones minimistas, en el supuesto de que estén bien formuladas, efectúan una división de las cosas que aseveramos en dos categorías: la de las «verdaderas» y la de las «falsas» (o quizás en tres, si dejan lugar para una categoría de las que no son ni una cosa ni la otra). Lo que no nos dicen es a qué obedece esta clasificación, cuál es su función, propósito o sentido. Ahora bien, en términos similares, podríamos distinguir aseveraciones que constituyen promesas cumplidas e incumplidas, órdenes acatadas y no acatadas, etc. ¿Qué distingue las aseveraciones que constituyen afirmaciones verdaderas de las que constituyen promesas cumplidas? Una respuesta a esta pregunta nos dirá algo sobre la verdad que irá más allá de lo que nos da el minimista. La respuesta mostrará cuando menos que la lista del minimista no es suficiente para caracterizar la verdad, que se deja fuera algo esencial; y puede revelar que la lista ni siquiera es necesaria, si eso que se había quedado fuera resulta ser lo único definitorio de la verdad.

La concepción de la verdad más razonable alternativa al pragmatismo y al minimismo que responde a este reto se enuncia tradicionalmente en términos de correspondencia con los hechos o con la realidad; aquí la llamaré realista. De acuerdo con esta concepción de la verdad, los enunciados que afirmamos y los juicios que hacemos están (en los casos centrales) en una relación de representación con la realidad, constituida por objetos que pertenecen a clases naturales objetivas, cuyos miembros se comportan en función de ello de acuerdo con leyes naturales igualmente objetivas. Se trata de una relación sustantiva, no constreñida por nuestras limitaciones cognoscitivas o por nuestros intereses. Para el realista, esa función que Dummett echaba a faltar en las clasificaciones de los minimistas es reclamada por la aspiración (en los casos centrales) a representar la realidad con arreglo a sus divisiones naturales o rasgos objetivos de aquellas aseveraciones que clasificamos como verdaderas.

El libro de Blackburn guía al lector a través de un bien escogido recorrido por la historia de la filosofía, presentando con gran claridad y examinando con refinamiento crítico y sensatez británica las consideraciones más influyentes a que apelan los negadores. Así, Blackburn examina las razones a favor de que no hay tal cosa como la verdad, sino verdades «para ti» o «para mí», que Platón propone en el Teeteto como interpretación de la doctrina del homo mensura de Protágoras; estudia la polémica entre Clifford y James sobre si tenemos obligaciones respecto de nuestras creencias; los debates sobre si las impresiones perceptivas constituyen una base cognoscitiva independiente del resto de nuestras creencias, desde Locke y Berkeley hasta Sellars, Davidson o McDowell; la cuestión de si la ciencia desempeña un papel privilegiado en nuestro conocimiento de la realidad o no es más que un «discurso» entre otros; o la pretensión de Davidson de que todo posible lenguaje o sistema de creencias debe poder ser interpretado por uno de nosotros. Incluso quien discrepe de las opiniones que defiende Blackburn apreciará tanto la exposición como las argumentaciones ofrecidas a su favor.

Sin embargo, respecto de la cuestión central en estos debates, Blackburn (en consonancia con su obra más propiamente académica) adopta la concepción minimista de la verdad. A mi parecer, pues, los puntos de vista que propone Blackburn en su libro constituyen una amalgama inestable de razonables opiniones antinegadoras sobre cuestiones específicas como las mencionadas, y una posición básicamente negadora sobre la cuestión central: la de la naturaleza misma de la verdad. Blackburn argumenta que las cuestiones que realmente dividen a negadores y antinegadores no conciernen a la naturaleza de la verdad, sino –como predice el minimismo– a la objetividad de verdades particulares y a la posibilidad de conocerlas objetivamente. Con realistas como Frankfurt y Williams, pienso que una «formulación intelectualmente adecuada» de estas cuestiones requiere tambiénconceder un papel sustantivo a la verdad misma, porque sólo así cabe concedérselo a virtudes como la veracidad o la honestidad intelectual. Mas es de justicia admitir que el minimismo de Blackburn no es gratuito. En la exposición anterior de la concepción de la verdad como correspondencia inserté por dos veces una condición de salvaguardia: «en los casos centrales». Lo hice anticipando objeciones basadas en afirmaciones a las que es muy poco razonable aplicar sin más una noción sustantiva de representación como la allí indicada. Ya se ha hecho mención más arriba del caso del contenido de las ficciones, pero es aún más interesante el de los juicios deónticos o evaluativos, cuyo estudio ha estado en el centro de las ocupaciones profesionales de Blackburn. No es nada fácil establecer si una «formulación intelectual satisfactoria» de su carácter requiere o no adoptar el minimismo.

Los libros de Williams y Frankfurt no discuten la cuestión misma de la naturaleza de la verdad, aunque caben pocas dudas de que sus simpatías se hallan más próximas a la concepción realista de la verdad que a la minimista. Ambos libros se ocupan de las virtudes o valores de la verdad. Williams destaca dos a su juicio centrales: la sinceridad (la proclividad a decir sólo lo que se cree) y lo que los traductores de la versión castellana vierten con acierto como precisión (accuracy), la honestidad intelectual de tomarse tanto esfuerzo como sea preciso para acercarse al ideal cliffordiano de formar sólo creencias verdaderas. El núcleo de su libro es un argumento destinado a establecer que sinceridad y precisión son valores intrínsecos, que no son reducibles a valores utilitarios o pragmáticos. Williams recurre a una genealogía ficticia, llevándonos a imaginar cómo podría haber surgido la apreciación de la disposición a la precisión y a la sinceridad, y el concepto de verdad que tal cosa presupone, en un «estado de naturaleza» de sujetos por lo demás con experiencias próximas a las nuestras. Tal genealogía no se propone como una suerte de conjetura de explicación evolutiva: es declaradamente ficticia. Diversos filósofos han echado mano de este tipo de recurso, tanto con fines vindicativos (en diversas teorías contractualistas de los valores morales o políticos) como derogatorios (en la famosa genealogía nietzscheana de los valores cristianos). La ficción genealógica de Williams persigue poner de relieve cómo la introducción de una práctica aseverativa dirigida a posibilitar la puesta en común del conocimiento, y por ende regulada por las normas de la sinceridad y la precisión, podría ser de gran valor en una comunidad de seres carente de ella, cuyo conocimiento basado en la percepción o la memoria se encuentra restringido a la perspectiva propia.

Hay en la literatura reciente dos concepciones contrapuestas de la aseveración, que tienen en común el objetivo de explicar cómo las aseveraciones podrían tener esa función de transmitir conocimiento. Una (brillantemente desarrollada por Timothy Williamson, un filósofo de Oxford) las asimila a las promesas; aseverar es «empeñar la palabra». Quine asume el compromiso de saber lo que dice, y la consiguiente responsabilidad de no extraviar a su audiencia con su acción. Otra –por la que se inclina Williams– las asimila más bien a las lágrimas o al sonrojo; en los casos fundamentales, las aseveraciones serían una manifestación espontánea, un indicio expresivo, de lo que uno cree. En cualquiera de ellas, las aseveraciones (nuestros juicios, las aseveraciones que hacemos en nuestro fuero interno, y las que hacemos para beneficio de los demás) se llevan a cabo con la aspiración de constituir conocimiento y, por ende, aspiran a la verdad, porque no hay conocimiento sin verdad. La genealogía ficticia de Williams elucida esta metáfora de la «aspiración» de una práctica en términos teleológicos, y pretende vindicar así el valor intrínseco de las disposiciones virtuosas asociadas, la precisión y la sinceridad. También Frankfurt centra la parte crucial de su argumentación en el valor del conocimiento. La noción de justificación o aceptación racional a que apelan los negadores presupone una noción distinta de verdad, pues lo que hace que ciertos criterios de justificación sean más adecuados que otros es, justamente, que suponerlos aumenta la probabilidad de que lo que creemos con arreglo a ellos sea verdadero. La noción misma de razón presupone la de verdad, porque –dice Frankfurt– «las razones están constituidas por hechos»; que las cosas sean de un modo o de otro cuenta, ello mismo, como una razón.

Entre el resto de penetrantes e iluminadoras discusiones que conforman el libro de Williams en torno al núcleo central presentado hasta aquí, el capítulo quinto, que versa sobre la virtud de la sinceridad, es el que, para mi gusto, manifiesta mejor las virtudes intelectuales de Williams. Entre otras consideraciones brillantes, rechaza aquí la relevancia de la distinción entre mentir y llevar a engaño, tan cara a algunos políticos. Llevar a engaño es decir algo que, si bien no es literalmente falso, en el contexto en que se dice nadie interpreta literalmente, sino como diciendo otra cosa, ésta sí, falsa. Tanto Frankfurt como Williams discuten también qué hace reprochable el engaño, argumentando ambos que el mentiroso trata de controlar las creencias de su víctima, limitando su autonomía y ejerciendo con ello un poder abusivo sobre ella. Con su característico sentido común, Williams nos recuerda, por otro lado, que no siempre tenemos derecho a la verdad y que, en tales casos, si insistimos en preguntar, bien podemos merecer el engaño.

Verdad es un concepto abstracto de difícil definición. El término procede del latín verĭtas y está asociado con la conformidad de lo que se dice con lo que se piensa o siente. Por ejemplo: si una personatiene pensado vender su casa y, ante una pregunta, responde “Yo nunca vendería mi casa”, no está diciendo la verdad (y, por lo tanto, está mintiendo, que es lo opuesto a la verdad).

La verdad también es la conformidad de las cosas con el concepto que se tiene formado en la mente sobre ellas: “Es verdad, el camino está en mal estado”, “Lo que suponíamos resultó ser verdad: el dueño de la empresa planea declararse en bancarrota”.

Otra forma de entender la verdad es como el juicio que no se puede negar racionalmente. Si alguien dice “Esta mesa pesa cinco kilogramos”y, tras proceder a pesarla, confirma dicho peso en la balanza, nadie puede decir que la afirmación no era verdadera.

En este sentido tendríamos que destacar que se habla de lo que se conoce como verdad de Perogrullo o perogrullada. En el lenguaje coloquial se hace uso de dicha expresión que viene a referirse a toda aquella verdad que es sabida de manera notoria y que, por tanto, se considera que es una necedad el tener que decirla.

Un claro ejemplo de esa mencionada acepción sería la siguiente oración: “En su exposición oral ante la clase el alumno dijo una verdad de perogrullo: todos acabamos muriendo”.

Asimismo existen otras expresiones muy habituales que también hacen uso del concepto que estamos analizando. Este sería el caso de “verdad como puños”, que se emplea para referirse a aquella que es evidente.

De la misma forma está la locución “una verdad como un templo”. En este caso, se utiliza frecuentemente para referirse a aquella que es absolutamente evidente y que, por tanto, no puede refutarse de ninguna de las maneras.

La existencia real de algo también se asocia a la verdad: “¿Ese perro es de verdad?”, “Quiero comprar una batería de verdad, me aburrí de ensayar con tachos y baldes”. Si el perro o la batería no son de verdad, no quiere decir que no existan, sino que se trata de algo diferente a lo que uno imagina como un perro o una batería real (podría tratarse de un perro de juguete y de una batería improvisada con otros elementos).

Además de todo lo expuesto tampoco podemos pasar por alto el empleo del término que nos ocupa en ámbitos tales como el cine. Así, por ejemplo, nos encontramos con películas tales como “Las dos caras de la verdad”. En el año 1996 fue cuando se estrenó la misma, dirigida por Gregory Hoblit y protagonizada por Richard Gere y Eduard Norton.En ella se nos cuenta como un abogado lleva a cabo la defensa de un joven que ha sido detenido por matar a un arzobispo que, presumiblemente, abusaba sexualmente de aquel y de sus compañeros.Las verdades, por último, son expresiones claras con que se reprende o corrige a alguien: “Te voy a decir una gran verdad: nadie con tu actitud puede llegar demasiado lejos en la vida”.
