really funny how Fyodor’s “last words” were words Jesus said when he was crucified and the chapter that confirms he didn‘t die is the one right after Easter.

House of Leaves, Chapter 9; P. 107-120
This chapter has no signs of stopping anytime soon so let's break it down into sections. I'll call this first part of this labyrinthine chapter "The Approach".
This "arch" of quoted Latin is almost undoubtedly an analogue to the massive arch inside the house itself. Or maybe really doubtedly and my sense of place is off. Even though the next section gets crazier I really can't understate how lost I am already. I'm rapidly filing through this text trying to find the main narrative once again in this sea of passages and references. I feel as lost as Hallway¹ must be down here. I was glad— No, relieved. I was relieved when Johnny shows up to talk about his fucking prostate orgasm, if only because it was a stable narrative to stand in.
Speaking of, why are Johnny's interludes so full of sex? I feel like there are thematic and narrative reasons. I doubt writing this miserable asshole having his back blown out was actually fun after a certain point. But I can't figure out the thematic purpose just yet. Maybe the point is that he isn't actually doing any of it, just writing fake stories in the margins of a review for a fake movie.
I wanna talk about the red strikethrough text for a moment, though. Purportedly it's text from Zampanò that he tried to get rid of and Johnny brought back.² Immediately the accuracy of any one passage should be brought into question, but there's something else about it that's been on my mind. I'm wondering if the choice of red lettering is a biblical reference. It might not be but I had the thought, so I might as well explain myself.
Red letters in the bible seem to be reserved for the Word of God or Christ. Who is also God in that... way that works. I'm afraid I'm a pagan woman, all my experience with the finer points of interpretation will always be from an outsider's view.
Oh I'm getting lost like this chapter. Focus, Maeve.
Red text, reserved for God and Christ. I wonder here if Zampanò is being painted into the role of both in relation to the house. Maybe the whole Trinity since he is also a guiding spirit. These passages have a different cadence from the remainder of the text. They feel more personal from the otherwise clinical tone of the film review we're ostensibly reading. The words of the creator of the text, so to speak. The house. And if it is indeed a marker of Zampanò's direct words, then what does it say for the narrative that he removed himself from his own house of leaves?
I'm not dead-set on this interpretation yet, though. This text is also all entirely related to the Labyrinth and the Minotaur that dwells therein, and I don't know why The Father, The Son, or the Holy Ghost would be so well-versed in Minoan myth. The words might still be "Godly", insofar as they all speak the truth about the nature of the house as a maze. But not every word about labyrinths or mazes is in red strikethrough.
I'll need more info for this analysis, I've clearly spent too much time here and I haven't even talked about the way the Approach winds around and keeps sending me off hither or tither.³ Just finding the narrative again is a chore. I wasn't lying when I said I was relieved to see Johnny. Almost relieved, he's still being a sex pest.⁴
I could probably go around in circles forever about themes, but the answers are deeper inside. And oh look someone busted a hole in the text.⁵ Let's follow it deeper into the house and get our answers.

Dear Mr Gaiman,
Listening to your album with the Four Play, this week my anxiety has learned that you have the most soothing and reassuring voice I have heard in a long time.
For this reason, I dare to ask: in this dankest timeline, in a world that seems to crumble, having children - your little one is just two years younger than mine - being a clever, sensible, cultured human being, how do you cope with fear and worry?
It seems everyday harder to live lightly.
I do what I can to make it easier for the future. For me, that's focusing on refugees. There were 50 million refugees and displaced people when I started, there are 114 million now, and given the effects of climate change on the world those numbers will just be going up. So I work as a Goodwill Ambassador and draw attention to refugees and raise money to help them and remind people that this could be you and that one day it may be.

Inspired by this post.
So, we have Danny, who outlived his friends and family (none of them became ghosts.) is the prince of the Infinite Realms.
As soon as he didn't have any ties to the living world anymore, at the young age of 114 was Danny scooped up and taken to the ghost zone for royal tutelage.
Things like balance training, how to carry himself prim and proper, how to invoke power with his voice (not literally, mostly how to sound commanding at stuff), what he should wear, knowledge about the ghost zone etc, etc.
Although, History beyond a certain point had to be taught exclusively by Clockwork, since the only other person who could teach him about the Infinite Realms' full History would be Pariah Dark, who was the first ghost ever to have been conceived by the Realms, and no one really wanted to wake up him.
Of course, that would mean there would be a void where Clockwork can't teach, but that knowledge is.... not necessary for the young prince to learn.
[It was really just about Pariah acquiring the ring and crown, the rest is uh, cough the lovey-dovey arc of Pariah Dark and Clockwork that will stay lost to time if Clockwork has anything to say about. Look, they were babies then compared to now, no one needs to know what happened back then alright?]
So, after all this I imagine him wearing something like this, staff and all.
However, Danny has an arch-nemesis.
Dark Danny.
Who somehow managed to escape from his imprisonment and causes havoc and chaos wherever he goes. His thing to do was to escape to the living world to make it befall the same fate he caused to his own.
He, however, probably did not expect for Danny to be more experienced, and his skills more honed than 100 years ago. Not that Dark Danny knew such time had passed, as he went through the trouble of trying to locate Danny's parents, sister, and best friends to make try and set him on the path to become him.
He failed, obviously, as they were already long gone.
His next thing to do? Locate Vlad and consume his ghost half. However, Danny made it just in time before he could do so.
However, Dark Danny's sheer, raw power, still eclipsed his own. However, while his raw power may be superior, he had something that would let him reliably go head-to-head in a fight with his alternate self and not win due to being underestimated and the sudden appearance of the ghost wail.
A staff, one naturally formed when he was crowned as Prince. An artifact that granted him a boost in power, and furthered his strengths regarding magic, giving him a roughly equal playing field when he confronts Dan.
It by itself may have only been equal to that of the Ring of Rage or Crown of Fire individually, but the fact it could compare to either one when not paired together spoke well of its power.
Dark Danny was, obviously, not expecting him to be as well-equipped and powerful as he was now. So, he underestimated him yet again, and almost led to his defeat and subsequent containment. However, Danny didn't expect for him to escape as he did, and run into another dimension.
Danny, both as himself and Prince of the Ghost Zone, has the responsibility to go after his evil self. So, he entered the portal, with some equipment made by Vlad as both a thanks and silent 'Find him as quickly as possible', which was a device meant to track Dark Danny's energy whenever he uses a good amount of it.
He... didn't expect, to land in a dimension of Superheroes and Villains.
However, he could let such things distract him from the task at hand, Dark Danny was surprisingly laying low for some reason. Probably to recuperate the damage Danny managed to do to him, so that left him a while to get familiar enough with this dimension.
He got a few odd looks here and there, mostly due to how he was dressed. He was worried about it for a while, before overhearing others calling him a cosplayer and him, suddenly remembering that those do indeed exist, decides to use that as a cover for how he dresses.
A month later, still with no sign of his alternate self, and making Danny worry about if he wasn't in this dimension at all. The device finally picked up Dark Danny's signature, and he hurried to said location, when he arrived, the place was not in the best of shape.
Upturned cars, broken buildings, rubble on the street, fire here and there. Not the best welcome party.
There were multiple other villains than just his future self there, but he didn't put them in mind. He was here for one, and one alone.
A few members of what he believes to be Young Justice took to fighting his alternate self, while other members of their team and the Justice League fight the other villains. He saw what could only be the start of a ghost wail, and hurried over.
In front of them, he slammed the butt of his staff on the ground and conjured a shield, which took the entirety of the attack with a few cracks.
"Still as strong as ever, I see." Danny said, lowering the shield as his twin rings run up and down his body respectively, hair turning a white glow and eyes as green as toxic waste. He raised his staff, pointing it at his future self, who looked none too pleased to see him at all. "Now then, shall we continue our fight you so rudely left unfinished?"
Of course, Danny no longer had the card of underestimation, but he could do well without it. Unfortunately, after quite the battle, Dark Danny managed to escape once again, due to some kind of teleport spell of another magic user.
Danny didn't escape unscathed from the fight, but nothing that couldn't be healed in time.
Of course, then he had to interact with both the Justice League, and Young Justice after his sudden introduction.

BSD: An Absurdist Analysis - Ch. 114
My thoughts on "Crime and Punishment"
[BSD Absurdism Masterpost]
Tumblr media
Okay, so! Fyodor probably isn't dead.
And my theory for what his ability is would tie into Asagiri's absurdist storytelling thus far.
In Sigma's flashback, we see Fyodor get impaled in a manner that is eerily similar to how he dies in the helicopter, a way that pratically guarantees his death. Yet, as Sigma observes, he must have escaped the execution in order for him to still be alive.
Tumblr media
My theory, put simply, is that when someone successfully kills Fyodor, he takes their place.
His ability is called Crime and Punishment, right? And if the ultimate crime (sin) is murder, then the punishment would be death. So, then, perhaps when someone is able to kill Fyodor, it causes their death, and somehow Fyodor takes on their lifeforce (for lack of a better term) and is able to keep living.
This would also explain why he has been able to live for such a long time. If he keeps getting killed by people whose lifeforce he assumes, then he can theoretically live forever as long as people keep attempting to murder him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This would explain the end of the chapter where the body is shown to clearly not be Fyodor's. The helicopter pilot would have paid the consequence for Fyodor's murder, and thus been the one to die. For whatever reason, I suppose this means he and Fyodor switched likenesses? This is further supported by the panel in the flashback/memory where something seems to be happening to the man who impaled Fyodor after he does so. This part I cannot explain as well, but I think y'all can understand what I'm getting at with this.
Additionally, this theory of Crime and Punishment explains the purpose of the prison-break game, he's been trying to goad Dazai into killing him all along so he can die in turn, and finally be rid of his rival.
(Edit: the above point is likely rendered invalid because No Longer Human would very likely protect Dazai from death by Fyodor’s ability. That being said, it further explains why Fyodor is so determined to kill Dazai — not only is he his match in wits, but he might be the only one capable of killing him for good.)
Further, it could possibly explain Nikolai's desire to kill Fyodor. Perhaps Nikolai knows the nature of Fyodor's ability, and is the only one who does, which is why he considers them to be so close. He idolizes Fyodor, and so he desires to one day kill him, because he knows it will kill him in turn and Fyodor will get to continue living on. This one's a bit of a reach, but I do think it's a potential explanation if my theory about Crime and Punishment is correct.
And now for how this all fits into absurdism!
Fyodor has been the main antagonist for a really long time, basically for half of the manga's run. Up until this point we've had little to no clues about the nature of his ability and if my theory turns out to be correct, wouldn't that just be the greatest absurdity of all time? A villain that literally cannot die because when someone kills him, they actually die instead of him? How do you even defeat such a person?
I'm fairly confident about this theory, my only question would be why he would reveal this now? Surely, he knows that Dazai would figure it out, both from Sigma and from the corpse clearly not being him, so what benefit does Fyodor gain from revealing not only that he's survived, but what his ability is?

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week. #5
Feb 9-16 2024
The Department of Education released the first draft for a wide ranging student loan forgiveness plan. After Biden's first attempt at student debt forgiveness was struck down at the Supreme Court in 2023, this new plan is an attempt to replace it with something that will hold up in court. The plan hopes to forgive debt for anyone facing "financial hardship" which has been as broadly defined as possible. Another part of the plan hopes to eliminate $10-20,000 in interest from all student loans, as well as a wide ranging public Information push to inform people of other forgiveness programs they qualify for but don't know about.
The House passed 1.2 Billion Dollars to combat human trafficking, including $175 million in housing assistance to human trafficking victims
The Department of Transportation announced $970 Million for improvements at 114 airports across 44 states and 3 territories. They include $40 million to O'Hare International in Chicago to improve passenger experience by reconfiguring TSA and baggage claims, and installing ADA compliant bathrooms(!). The loans will also go to connecting airports to mass transit, boosted sustainability, installing solar and wind power, and expanding service to under served committees around the country.
Medicare & Medicaid released new guidelines to allow people to pay out of pocket prescription drug coats in monthly installments rather than as a lump sum. This together with capping the price of certain drugs and penalties for drug companies that rise prices over inflation is expected to save the public millions on drug coasts and assure people don't pass on a prescription because they can't pay upfront
The EPA announced its adding 150 more communities to its Closing America's Wastewater Access Gap Community Initiative. 2.2 Million Americans do not have basic running water and indoor plumbing. Broken and unreliable wastewater infrastructure exposed many of those to dangerous raw sewage. These Americans live primarily in poor and rural communities, many predominantly Black communities in the south as well as those on tribal lands. The program is aiming to close the wastewater gap and insure all Americans have access to reliable clear water.
The White House announced deferred action for Palestinians in the US. This means any Palestinian living in the United States, no mater their legal status, can not be deported for any reason for the next 18 months.
The Department of Energy announced $60 million in investment into clean geothermal energy. The plan will hopefully lead to a 90% decrease in the coasts of geothermal. DOE estimates hold that geothermal might be able to power the hopes of 65 million Americans by 2050 making it a key step in the Biden administration plan for a carbon-free grid by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
The EPA launched $83 million to help improve air quality monitoring across America. With updated equipment local agencies will be better able to report on air quality, give more localized reports of bad air quality and the country will be better equipped to start mitigating the problem
The Department of Energy announced $63 million in investments in domestic heat-pump manufacturing. Studies have shown that heat-pumps reduce green house gases by 50% over the most efficient condensing gas boilers, as technology improves this could rise to 75% by 2030. Heat pump water heaters meanwhile are 2 to 3 times as energy efficient as conventional electric water heaters.
HHS awarded $5.1 million to organizations working with LGBTQI+ Youth and their Families. The programs focus on preventing homelessness, fighting depression and suicide, drug use and HIV prevention and treatment, as well as  family counseling and support interventions tailored for LGBTQI+ families.
The House passed two bills in support of the oppressed Uyghur minority in China. The "No Dollars To Uyghur Forced Labor" Act would prohibit the US government from spending any money on projects that source materials from Xinjiang. The Uyghur Policy Act would create a permanent post at the State Department to coordinate policy on Uyghur Issues, much like the special ambassador on antisemitism.

Old heavy metal songs by Metallica, Sodom, Slayer and Cannibal Corpse were playing on the speaker as you sat so nicely on Johnny's lap; his cock buried in your ass as he held one hand over your mouth, the other holding the phone against his ear as he spoke to his publicist.
They asked if he had seen you at all, as because you were his agent you were expected to sort out his bookings for the awards season, but Johnny just laughed and said that you were more than busy for the moment.
It was never a secret that you and Johnny were together, as the paparazzi had leaked the relationship early on when they caught him on a beach with you, wearing just swim trunks and kissing and hugging.
It was obvious from the start, and neither you nor Johnny ever saw any point in hiding it anyway.
Sure, interviewers asked him about what it was like to date his agent every time he went to press junkets, but he was always honest - he adored you, and he loved that you never had any qualms with telling him off when he needed it.
You were the reason why he was rumoured to be winning an Oscar; you had nagged him into taking a role for a large director that you were a fan of, a biopic about a scientist during the first World War, and he had been a massive success.
People hadn't stopped talking about the film, or his performance, for months. He was a fan favourite to win the Oscar.
But that didn't stop you from being completely different in the bedroom; always willing and eager to submit to him, always more than happy to lube yourself up so that you could be his cockwarmer throughout the night and during the day.
Letting him have free access to you as long as you wore one red sock and one green one. In the bedroom, you were his favourite fuck toy; his prized toy boy.
He loved the way you looked when he fucked you doggy style on the bed facing the mirror; watching you get cockdrunk and cumdrunk, begging for him to breed you.
He adored how you would happily rush into bathrooms with him at restaurants and awards ceremonies just for a quickie. Johnny fucking knew that he had stuck gold with you. His publicist hung up, and he tossed the phone aside as he hummed, lazily bucking his hips up into you.
"Such a good boy," he said softly, running a hand down your back. "Keeping Daddy's cock nice and warm in your tight ass."
You let out a shaky sigh, wanting nothing more than to be fucked and bred until his cum was leaking from your ass and you could hardly walk; twitching and writhing on the sofa until you couldn't move anymore, only able to whimper out quiet begs for him to keep going.
Overstimulated and completely spent by the time that he eventually pulled out. Drooling until a puddle formed beneath you, sweating and panting heavily. But you knew that if you wanted that, you would have to behave.
You would have to be so good for Johnny if you were to get what you wanted. He grabbed the remote, turning the speaker off before he turned the television on, casually flicking through the channels until he found an old spaghetti Western on; it was by one of his favourite directors, Sergio Leone, and was rightfully rendered as iconic.
He bucked his hips up into you just to listen to your shaky breath as you shuddered and tried to hold it in; torturing you so wonderfully and knowing all the right strings to pull.
"What's the matter, baby?" Johnny hummed, leaning forward so that he could gently hold your throat. "Hmm?"
You swallowed thickly, doing your best not to squirm and buck your hips. "Daddy, I need you..."
He grinned as he licked his lips, clearing his throat as he leaned back with his hands on the back of his head. "Show me how much you need it."
Relief washed over you in short bursts of waves. Rocking your hips slowly, getting him to groan and tilt his head back as he closed his eyes; you could feel him getting hard as you picked up the pace, moving your hips so that his cock hit all the places in your ass.
Making you buckle and groan as you leaned over, putting your hands on the coffee table. Johnny tilted his head forward, able to see his cock pumping in and out of your stretched ass as he bit his lip, stifling a soft grunt.
A string of praises and encouragements left his mouth as he grabbed your sides to keep you steady, his grip bruising and harsh. Fuck. You always took his cock so well.
You were so well trained, bouncing your ass and clenching around him as you whimpered and hung your head. Johnny couldn't help but to smile, slowly thrusting into you.
He grumbled, watching you fuck yourself as his eyes drifted to the television; against the screen, he could see the reflection of him fucking you, and couldn't help but to grin.
It was always his favourite time when he had you on your hands and knees on the bed, facing the mirror so that he could see your face as he fucked you; watching you slowly become an incoherent and needy mess, drooling and unable to do anything but keep fucking yourself on his cock.
Completely drunk, and even getting more drunk from his cum when he bred you. Listening to the soft squelches as he fucked it back into you.
Fuck. Oh, fuck. He tilted his head back again, letting out a long moan as he closed his eyes in bliss; you were such a good boy, such a good little fuck toy for him to use. You would always be his favourite toy boy.
But the way you clenched around him, and how he could feel your body tremble and shake as you chased your release; the sounds of a gunfight on the television masking the slapping of skin so easily as he gripped your sides tighter, pulling you back so that your back was flush to his chest.
He picked up the pace, fucking up into you and pounding your ass as he let go of one side, bringing his thumb to your mouth. He slipped the digit between your lips, and moaned softly when you sucked it. Your tongue running over the tip and swirling around the base.
"Such a good boy," Johnny praised with harsh breaths. "Always such a good boy for Daddy, huh, baby?"
You whimpered, clenching around him as you felt drool slip from the corner of your mouth, leaking down your skin as you shuddered and shook. "I wanna... I wanna..."
"What is it, baby?" He asked softly, running a hand down your torso and stopping just shy of your cock.
You let out a harsh and shaky breath. "I wanna, wanna cum - please, Daddy... been so good..."
"I know, baby," Johnny whispered, licking a stripe up the side of your neck. "Whenever you're ready, okay?"
You nodded, thankful that you didn't have to try and hold yourself back. You clenched around him a final time, your eyes closing tightly as you groaned out his name, toes curling and thighs shaking as you felt your cum spurt onto your stomach.
You tilted your head back, giving him perfect access to the sensitive skin; Johnny didn't even think twice, licking the sweaty skin before sinking into it.
Claiming you as he froze and grunted out your name, slowly easing into you as he felt his cum fill your ass; soft squelches echoing through the room as he eased you through your orgasm. He fell back, the back of his head hitting the sofa as he sighed heavily, daring to laugh.
"You good?"
You nodded, clearing your throat as you stood up. You didn't get far, collapsing onto your back on the sofa as you sighed contentedly. "Fuck, John."
Johnny grinned at you as he licked his lips. "We just did."
You scoffed, playfully glaring at him. "Shut up and get me a cigarette, would you?"
Groaning softly, Johnny stood. Daring to pause and kiss your forehead before he wandered off to grab your cigarettes. "Y'know, we should think about showering."
"Once I've got my cigarette," you chuckled. "I'm fucking spent."
"Well, maybe we can skip the globes," he hummed, handing you the packet and sitting beside you. "Have a night, just you and me."
"No," you growled, lighting it. "We have to be there, if you win then it could be huge for your career."
"And there he is," Johnny laughed. "Immediately into work mode already."
You rolled your eyes fondly. "I might be your boyfriend, but don't forget I'm still your agent."

2023 Special Helmets: An Analysis
Helmets are where we get to see the creativity and personality of drivers come alive. Not too long ago, I looked at and analyzed the normal helmets that all 22 drivers wore. That analysis was heavily focused on color because there isn't much room for creativity in those helmets and color is one of the main things that drivers can play around with to show their individuality and creativity.
However, with the special helmets drivers wear during the season, we see much more about the drivers and their creativity.
In the 2023 season, there were 23 events (with the 22 grand prix weekends and preseason testing) in which a special helmet could be worn, and with 20 drivers on the grid at any given event, there was potential for 460 special helmets. Obviously, every driver isn't going to have a special helmet for every single event.
However, there were 114 instances (that I was able to identify) in which drivers wore a special helmet. Or 114/460 = 0.248 = 24.8% Which is a far cry from the days were drivers were only allowed one special helmet per season.
Methodology
After combing through social media posts, news articles, images from race weekends, and different sessions, I was able to identify 114 instances in which the 22 drivers who participated in the 2023 season wore a helmet that was not their "normal" helmet. I went through this process approximately three times to ensure that I didn't miss anything, but I was doing a lot of this during the end of my thesis and finals time, so there might be some things I missed. In which case please do let me know.
All of this data was put into a spreadsheet:
Tumblr media
The next step was to organize the data and find the meanings given by the drivers for why they wore the special helmets. This again meant more time for social media posts and news articles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the data gathered, there was a need for analysis. While the individual stories behind the helmets are very interesting on their own, they don't tell us much about special helmets as a whole.
The first method of analysis was the number of special helmets per driver. While it sounds straightforward, some drivers did reuse special helmets for more than one race.
The next method of analysis was the number of special helmets per event. Though in the spreadsheet, the Qatar GP and sprint are separately listed due to Pierre having two helmets that weekend, I did count it as one event because it is the only instance in which two helmets were worn in one weekend.
The last method of analysis was the reasoning for the special helmet. In this, the possible reasons for the helmet were considered. Essentially, what was the reason for having a special helmet - as it was given by the driver/team/helmet design?
For this last analysis, I created 21 different reasonings based on the data I had gathered during the research phase. Most of the helmets fit into more than one of the following reasons:
Host Tribute: The helmet heavily features a design related to the city or country they are racing in. It somehow is a tribute to the host.
Team Home Race: The helmet was worn during a race in which the team is somehow based. This could also be a main sponsor home race, i.e., Honda or Alfa Romeo.
Inaugural Race: The first time a race was held at the location.
Home Race: A race in the country that the driver was born in, races for, etc.
Sponsor Collaboration: A driver partnered with a sponsor and it is clearly visible in the design.
Vibes: There's no explanation that I could find.
Livery Match: The helmet features design elements similar to a one-off/special livery.
Team Milestone: The race is a major milestone for the team and the driver has some sort of tribute for it.
Tribute Helmet: The helmet is meant to be a tribute to someone(s) special to the driver. Could be F1-related people or people that are special in their personal livers.
Race Milestone: The race is a major milestone for the driver.
WDC: This one is just for Max Verstappen and the helmet he was gifted by Red Bull after winning the WDC in Qatar.
Artist Collaboration: The driver worked with an artist that was specifically stated.
Night Race: This was only used if I could not find any other explanation for the helmet, and it featured either glitter or chrome.
Race Beginnings Tribute: The explanation for the helmet somehow relates it back to the beginnings of their racing career. Color or design elements from first helmets.
Team Tribute: The helmet is meant to show love and appreciation for the team.
Movie Release Collaboration: The helmet corresponds to a movie that is soon to be released.
Honorary Home Race: While not the driver's home race, the country has become like home and/or taken them in as one of their own.
Investor Tribute: Helmet showcases something meaningful to a team investor.
Embodies the Samurai Spirit: Fernando Alonso's samurai tattoo and love for Samurai culture.
Comeback Race: This was only used for Daniel Ricciardo in Hungary because there was no other reason for the special honey badger on the back of his helmet and it quite clearly said "I'm Back."
Last Race: While Abu Dhabi was a night race, the helmet used during the race did not feature glitter or chrome. It was just a special design different from the normal helmet worn.
There was a caveat with the host tribute and team home race. A helmet that featured location-specific designs was either counted as a host tribute or a team home race. So a Haas driver with a special helmet In the US would be considered for a team home race, not a host tribute, whereas a Ferrari driver with a US-themed helmet would be considered a host tribute. Additionally, for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, special helmets were considered as inaugural race helmets, not host tributes. Unless it was for the Haas drivers, in which case it was a team home race and inaugural race helmet.
Analysis
How Many Special Helmets Were There Per Driver?
There were a total of 114 instances in which a special helmet was worn. However, there were not 114 different special helmets worn. In quite a few cases a special helmet design was repeated over 2 or more race weekends.
Max Verstappen wore a special helmet at 10 different race weekends, but for five of those weekends, he was wearing his WDC helmet. The WDC helmet was given to him after winning the championship during the Sprint race. It was then worn for the Qatar Grand Prix, in Austin, Mexico, Brazil, and Abu Dhabi. So while he wore a special helmet for 10 race weekends, there were only 6 different special helmet designs worn by him. Sergio Perez wore a special helmet at 5 different race weekends. Unlike his fellow Red Bull driver, he did not repeat a special helmet during the season. Each helmet had a distinct design to fit the race weekend.
Charles Leclerc wore a special helmet at 7 different race weekends, whereas Carlos Sainz wore a special helmet at 5 different race weekends. Neither Ferrari driver repeated a special helmet design during the season.
Lewis Hamilton had 2 special helmets during the 2023 season - the second least amount of special helmets for a driver who raced for the entire season. As such, he did not repeat any special helmet designs. Meanwhile, George Russell wore a special helmet at 3 different events. However, he only had 2 distinct designs as the special helmets for testing and the Bahrain Grand Prix were the same.
Lando Norris wore a special helmet at 7 different race weekends. However, he wore the same special helmets for Monaco and Spain, which happened to correlate with the McLaren Triple Crown special livery for those weekends. Oscar Piastri wore a special helmet at 5 different race weekends. Like his teammate, he wore the same special helmets for Monaco and Spain which correlated with the Triple Crown livery.
Esteban Ocon wore a special helmet at 11 different race weekends, which was the most special helmets worn by a driver. However, while he wore the most special helmets, Esteban did wear the same helmet for 4 weekends (testing, Bahrain GP, Saudi Arabia, and Australia). The Baku helmet was the same as his regular helmet, but instead of black lines, he had white lines. So, Esteban did have the most special helmets, it was largely due to a repeat of special helmets at the beginning of the season. There were only 8 distinct special helmet designs. Pierre Gasly wore 8 special helmets during the 2023 season. Each special helmet had a distinct design, Pierre even went so far as to have 2 different special helmets for the Qatar race weekend.
Fernando Alonso wore 3 special helmets during the 2023 season and was one of the few drivers who did not have a special helmet design for his home Grand Prix. Teammate Lance Stroll had 4 special helmet designs for the 2023 season.
Valtteri Bottas had 9 special helmets for the 2023 season and no repeats at any point in the year. He had the most distinct special helmets. Notably, most of Valtteri's special helmets were designed by professional cyclist and partner, Tiffany Cromwell. While Alfa Romeo had been largely forgotten during the season, Valtteri's helmets were extremely memorable with the fun and creative designs. Zhou Guanyu had 6 special helmets for the 2023 season and there were no repeats in special helmets. However, at least one design was the same as his regular helmet but with the colors changed to fit the race weekend.
Nico Hulkenberg wore 6 special helmets during the season. However, his special helmets for Austin and Las Vegas are seemingly the same helmet, while the Abu Dhabi helmet was his normal helmet but with chrome where it used to be white. Kevin Magnussen also had 6 special helmets for the 2023 season. Each helmet was distinct in its design, however like Nico, the Abu Dhabi helmet was his regular helmet with chrome details where it had been white.
Alex Albon had 5 special helmets for the 2023 season. Alex used the same special helmet for Silverstone and Hungary, otherwise the 799th and 800th races for Williams. Logan Sargeant had the least special helmets for a driver who participated in all 22 races with just 1 for his home race of Miami.
Yuku Tsunoda had 6 special helmets for the 2023 season. However, 3 of the special helmets were his regular helmet, but with different colors to fit the race weekends. Daniel Ricciardo had 4 special helmets for the 2023 season. However, he wore the Las Vegas helmet for Abu Dhabi as well. Nyck De Vries had 1 special helmet and Liam Lawson had no special helmets.
In the end, there were a total of 101 distinct special helmet designs worn in total.

How Many Special Helmets Were There Per Race?
For this analysis, there were a total of 23 weekends that a special helmet could have been worn - testing and 22 races.
Of the 23 weekends, there was only one event that had no special helmets from any driver. Austria was the only race without at least one special helmet for the entirety of the weekend. Considering that Austria is the home race for Red Bull and the race was at the Red Bull Ring, it was somewhat surprising to see that there were no special helmets by any of the Red Bull drivers.
The race with the most special helmets was the Las Vegas Grand Prix. It was the inaugural race and 16 of the 20 drivers had a special helmet for the race weekend that either fit the Vegas vibe or was glittery/chrome for the night race. A consistent theme was that the American races had the most special helmets. In Miami, 11 drivers had special helmets, and in Austin, 9 drivers had special helmets. I believe that this could largely be due to sponsors and a push towards engaging the US markets. Additionally, it was only the second race in Miami and COTA has always been a race that drivers/teams go all out for.
Also, notably, Qatar had 3 special helmets, but only 2 drivers due to Pierre Gasly having 2 different special helmets for the weekend. He had one for the sprint and one for the Grand Prix.

How Many Special Helmets Were There Per Reason?
As I mentioned above, 21 different reasons were given for wearing a special helmet. In most cases, there were multiple reasons or explanations for why a driver chose a special helmet for a race weekend. Some reasons were much more common than others.
Most commonly, drivers chose to wear a special helmet to honor the city or country they were racing in. These helmets had some sort of design elements that paid tribute to the city or country. So think of the Monaco helmets. A lot of them featured iconic parts of the city. For example, Valtteri Bottas' helmet, while Pac-Man themed had different parts of the Monaco track like the tunnel and piscine. Kevin Magnussen's Monaco helmet also featured iconic Monaco imagery.
The next most common reason was an inaugural race special helmet with 16 of the 20 drivers having a special helmet for Las Vegas.
Home races were also a very common reason for a special helmet, whether it was for a team home race (15), a driver's home race (10), or an honorary home race (2).
There were a lot of milestones celebrated this year for teams and drivers when it came to the number of races that they'd completed. Most notably, Williams reached 800 races, Lando Norris competed in 100 races (as did George Russell, while he did not have a special helmet for the occasion, Mercedes did release vintage-style merch that coincided with George's 100th race weekend), and Charles Leclerc reached 100 race entries with Ferrari the same weekend as Lando and George. While Charles did have a special helmet for the race weekend, it was not originally for that purpose. The original meaning behind his football field special helmet was a host tribute, but when his race milestone was brought up he attributed the green of the football field to Italian pop singer Gianni Morandi's green meadow where hopes are born and connected it to Ferrari.

Concluding Remarks
Special helmets reveal so much about drivers and what they deem important or worthy of a special helmet. Each special helmet is unique in its own way.
Something I found very interesting is that of the 11 drivers who wore special helmets in Miami, only Nico Hulkenberg did not have a hint of pink on his helmet. While still very Miami, he didn't have the iconic pink color that the other 10 drivers did. And while that can mean absolutely nothing, looking at that in context to his tweet about the pink Force India, it's a little bit more than just not having pink on his helmet.
Or based on Fernando Alonso's Japan helmet, you could go into the connection he's had with Samurais and his back tattoo and nickname.
These special helmets open new avenues to understanding how drivers think and which narratives they want to highlight. There may not be extensive stories to tell with each helmet, but a good chunk of them can take you down a few different paths to understand either the drivers or the teams that they drive for.
And finally, after looking at 101 different helmet designs, here are some of my personal favorites

What if Jake’s not actually bad at basketball?
That is to say. What if the school coach was a Controller who deliberately kept him off the team, knowing there was already another Controller in his household, to try to push him towards joining the Sharing?
Explanations this fandom has now proposed for Jake being cut from the basketball team, in no particular order: Ellimist shenanigans. The coach hates him for some reason. Everyone's expectations for Jake were too high, thanks to Tom. Sharing shenanigans (possibly to help Temrash 114). Jake really does suck that bad.
So. To the polls!
