Character Focus: Splinter & The Boys
Genre: Fluff, Angst
“Okay, boys,” Lou Jistu said, kneeling down to look his gaggle of sons in the face. “What are our Topside Rules?”
“Hats on all the time,” Blue said, pulling his beanie down a little further.
“Or hoods,” Purple chimed in, scowling at his brother for forgetting that he liked a big hood, not a tight hat. Lou nodded.
“And jackets buttoned up too, right? To your chinny-chin-chins?”
A darling little fic about Splinter taking the boys on a trip to the local library—what might be their last trip, as it’s become increasingly difficult to pass them off as human. Features both Turtle Tot goodness and some absolutely on-point Splinter characterization, and is just all around wholesome.

“Huh.” Was all he said, which made Splinter chuckle.
“That’s not the reaction I was expecting.” The rat admitted.
“Really? What were you expecting?”
“Oh I don’t know, maybe some more denial? I was definitely in denial when I first realized I was attracted to men.”
Leonardo realizes something about himself on his 12th birthday, but struggles putting those feelings to words. Thankfully, his dad is there to both offer support and help him sort it out.

He looked up to the ceiling. “Can you believe it, mother? Your crazy little Yoshi who ran around causing trouble… and thought his call in life was to be a stupid movie star... He’s—” He again looked down at the little one in his arms, warm tears beginning to blur his vision.
He hiccuped. “He’s a father. And he loves his babies so much. Isn’t that crazy?”
Just Splinter reflecting on fatherhood and how much he loves his sons, while he tends to a sick Leo at two different points in time. The first chapter is pre-series, while the second flashes into the present.
It’s a Lovely Evening in Your Former Home, and You Are a Horrible Rat by nimagine
2,494 words, 1/1 chapters
Character Focus: Splinter & The Boys, w/ a cameo from Marcus Moncrief
Genre: Humor, Action
“Oh, my poor rat spleen,” Splinter wheezes. He sucks in his stomach, but he still can’t get himself unstuck from the window of the second-story bathroom.
Sure, he may have recently gone from being a tortilla chip on stilts to a bowling ball on much shorter stilts, but he can’t be blamed for that. He can probably be blamed for putting all his children in a hard plastic cat backpack, though, which is contributing to his current predicament.
Splinter exhales until he’s dizzy and slithers down onto the floor like a disappointing tsuchinoko, groaning. The bathroom, like the rest of the house, is full of official Lou Jitsu merch, from shower curtains to branded toothpaste.
“Okay, that was mortifying,” he groans to the tiny turtles peering out of the cat backpack’s porthole window. “The hardest part is over. Papa will be done with his heist soon, and then you can go back to destroying the truck’s upholstery.”
Set shortly after being mutated and escaping Draxum, Splinter brings his kids along on a daring heist—robbing his own house. I about bust a gut the first time I read this, this fic captures Rise’s chaotic energy to a tee.

Mikey lit after his task with unparalleled joy. He traced the crevices with broad strokes, painting each scale a different color highlighting every little crack and imperfection. He was sloppy, of course, but it wasn’t too different than painting on the brick walls or the rough floors.

“Leo, quit moving!” Mikey whined, though he couldn’t stop smiling. Leo fidgeted in place again, raising one hand to cover his mouth.
“Sorry,” he giggled, muffled. “It just tickles so much!”
A story that explores both Mikey’s love of art and how perceptive he can be, as he convinces his brothers to let him paint their shells over the years. This fic is as fluffy as it is insightful, and sure to put a smile on your face.

“Ey! Wall breakers!” Raph bellows at the vehicle. “Who the hell are you, and what the hell do you want?”
“We really don’t have anything decent to steal, if that’s what you’re here for,” Leo adds, cupping his mouth to get his voice to carry. “Well. Donnie’s lab has some okay stuff. You can have that.”
A disgruntled green and purple head pokes around the corner of the broken wall. “Excuse you,” Donnie says irritably, “we do not offer my lab’s contents to hypothetical robbers, Leo.”
“Hey, guys!” Mikey cheers, popping out next to Donnie. He beams at them, covered in dust and band-aids. “We’re home!”
Raph and Leo welcome Donnie and Mikey home after their long adventure during the events of “Repo Mantis”, and much joy ensues. The whole of the fic is built on heartwarming sibling interactions that nail their mark.

It was.
The fourth turtle grinned from the doorway, eyes flashing white against the nighttime background. His purple armor practically glowed with something otherworldly, humming in the air around him.
And in his arms, aimed towards the ceiling, was a shotgun.
“I’m here for my brothers,” Purple announced, deadpan.
To borrow the author’s summary: ‘The one in which you’re a henchman, Donnie’s brothers have been kidnapped, and Donnie’s got a shotgun.’ Need I say more??

Donnie turned his head towards the youngest with a strained smile. “Yes, Mikey?”
Mikey pressed his fingers together sheepishly. “Leo didn’t steal your eyebrow. It left.”
Donnie’s nonexistent eyebrows (he refused to wear his mask with one AWOL) twitched. “I beg your pardon?”
One of Donnie’s eyebrows goes missing, and the cause behind it has the energy of a soap opera. This fic is pure crack, and I mean that in the best way.

“Soooo, Donnie raised an undead thrall, again,” April says in a slightly loud voice, getting them all back on track. “You’ve defeated multiple enemies to get to this point, have burned up your only map of the tunnel system-”
“Sorry,” Raph says sheepishly, the cleric responsible for that fireball attack which burnt up a previous enemy, who’d had the map.
“-and unless you rescue the mayor’s wife and return the Stone of Spring to the village, you’ll probs never be allowed in this hood ever again. Whatcha gonna do, boys?”
The gang plays D&D! It’s impressively unhinged, and how they got as far in their campaign as they did is anyone’s guess. An absolute riot.

Donnie’s eyebrows drew together. “We’ll see about that…”

“Raph! Leo stole my puzzle box and he won’t give it ba-“
Donnie froze. Raph froze, too, sitting on his floor, with approximately five thousand puzzle pieces strewn around him in a big mess.
“I can explain!”
Donnie teaches Raph all the tips and tricks to solving a jigsaw puzzle, and then they stay up all night working on it together. A sweet fic that makes you look at Raph as more than just the brawn, as well as showcases Donnie’s softer side.

“Get some sleep,” he said, palming the top of Mikey’s head. “You know Raph’ll have us up for training at seven.”
“You’re gonna make up with Leo too, right?”
“Right…right.”
He would, probably without ever bringing the fight up again. Leo would just hand him a video game controller, or bring up some old in-joke they had, and that would be that.
“Sleep well, little brother.”
“Nighty night. Donnie?”
“Hm?”
“You’re not a shitty brother.”
After a squabble with Leo, Donnie gets stuck on being called a selfish weirdo, and sets to prove his brother wrong. Features some subtle, but thoughtful introspection into Donnie’s character, and a truly adorable moment of him doting on his baby brother. The resolution is also pitch perfect.

"Oof, back of the line," Leo patted Donnie's shoulder. "Sorry, bud."
"Are you kidding?" Donnie beamed. "With nobody behind me, I'll have all the time I want with Atomic Lass!"
"You sure you're gonna be ok here by yourself?" asked Raph, tucking his space helmet under his arm. "Cuz we could wait with you—"
"Affirmative. Now go! Shoo shoo! I'll be finished faster than the half-life of Ununtrium!" Donnie waved off his bros, teeming with excitement. He watched the fans climb onto the other autograph stages, where they shook hands and snapped photos with their favorite artists and performers. Soon, that would be him and Atomic Lass; the very thought of it made Donnie absolutely jazzed!
When a meet-and-greet with Atomic Lass’ actress goes poorly (to put it lightly), it’s up to Donnie’s brothers to cheer him up. Seeing Donnie get so excited just for it all to come crashing down is a genuine ouch, which makes the way his brothers show how much they care about him all the more heartwarming.

"Hey! He's waking up!" Mikey called over his shoulder, "Raph? Can you hear me? Blink once for 'yes' and twice for 'no'!"
Raph could've sworn his eyes crossed before he managed to blink slowly in response, "Ugh... how're you guyss s-standin' on the ceiling like that?" He slurred, dazed yet impressed with their latest ninja ability.
"Well, for starters, we aren't on the ceiling," Donnie informed, "You are upside down."
A role-swap, of sorts. Raph is always carrying around his brothers, so the author gives them a turn to carry Raph. Just some old-fashioned, big brother gets a turn to be mother-henned goodness.

Crumbling Cardboard Box by Drifting_Andromeda

Character Focus: Michelangelo & Leonardo (Mikey-centric), Ensemble
Genre: Hurt/Comfort (of the emotional variety)
For the first two weeks his plan was working well, then all of a sudden it wasn’t.
He was unsure if the dread and anxiety had been building and he hadn’t noticed or if one nightmare on a Tuesday night jolted his senses when he woke up. Either way, he was now battling with his own negative emotions.
Everyone was so worried about a million other things though, so he did his best to deal with it himself. A bit hypocritical, considering how preachy he had been to his other family members about sharing their own emotions and asking others for help, but he was Dr. Feelings! He could handle this on his own.
In the meantime he continued to cook and hug and make sure everyone else was feeling better than he did.
In the aftermath of Shredder’s attack, Michelangelo struggles with moving pains. This comes to a head when the family finally gets a chance to go back to their old lair to see what’s salvageable. Some gentle hurt/comfort, for when things aren’t okay but will be—eventually.

“What?! Baron, c’mon, this is no joke! If you don’t pay your rent, you’ll be back on the streets!” He shook a green limb one final time for emphasis. “The mean streets of the city!”
Draxum raised one eyebrow. It was an impressive skill, even by warrior scientist standards. “I have already paid the humans their paltry tithe.”
Michelangelo facepalmed. “No, dude, the rent is due every month. You gotta keep paying it.”
At that, Draxum felt the familiar sting of incredulity. “What, over and over again with no end in sight?”
Michelangelo gave him a thumbs-up sign. “Welcome to capitalism, babeyy.”
Draxum clenched his fist in defiance and fury. “I see…” he rumbled, “...we live in a society.”
“Nah,” said Michaelangelo, cheer recovered. “You live in a society. I live in a sewer.”
Oh Draxum, my beloved. I have a soft spot for reformed goatman, and this fic helped scratch the itch. Set between “Repairin’ the Baron” and “Mystery Meat”, Mikey helps Draxum craft a resume in a plot that could be ripped straight from the show, and their banter is perfect—as is Splinter’s indignation when he’s called in as a reference. If you’re looking for a good time, you’ll find one here.

Mommy's arm stretches, not once letting the Leo puppet go but lowering him down enough to meet their eyes. This close, the wooden carving and glossy sheen are clear. It's not Leo, not quite. But—
“Obey the rules,” he says darkly. Still smiling. Staring into Donnie. “Or we'll tear you apart and eat your insides. While you're still alive.”
And then they're gone, giggling manically into the shadows.
Donnie makes a vow.
The pink bitch dies.
The turtles walk into an abandoned toy factory from hell, and Donnie’s on a mission to save his brother. This is a light crossover, but you don’t need any knowledge of the other series (Poppy Playtime) to enjoy it. In fact, I’d say not knowing even adds to the horrific ambiance; not knowing anything about the villain used from it only made her more terrifying to me. Puppet!Leo is also delightfully creepy.

“Hm? Oh yes yes, I’m fine... So, how are you feeling, my son?” Splinter asked, “Sixteen is a pretty big milestone, after all.”
“Heh, I’m good. ...Honestly, it doesn’t feel all that different from fifteen” Raph replied. Thinking about it, he added, “Maybe ‘cause a bunch of stuff has already happened in the past year?” He was now officially a year older, yeah, but it felt like he had already done plenty of changing and growing before then.
Who would’ve thought that he would be given mystic weapons (and later mystic powers), learn about his dad’s past, take down several city-ending threats, meet the spirits of his ancestors, and become a hero alongside his family and friends all before his next birthday? That whole situation was... pretty crazy to think about. Amazing, yeah, but definitely still crazy. In that sense, maybe a more normal and lowkey birthday was just what he needed.
Just a sweet moment of reflection, as Raph celebrates his birthday and spends some quality time with his father. Set post-the Season 2 finale.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, Mikey would like less than to draw right now. But he needs it. Needs the pen, needs the paper, needs to make something. Needs to make. Needs to make sure he still can.
Just draw, he wills himself. Just do something, you’ll warm up, and the rest will come easy like it always does.
But every time he puts pencil to paper and starts scribbling, it comes out stiff, and unfeeling, and a shadow of the work he did at the lair— the work he’s never going to see again, not ever, because it’s gone.
Mikey goes through artistic burnout, and Leo helps him work through it. Just a little bit of angst perfectly balanced by brotherly support, and a great exploration of the creative process.

There's a popular myth that twins are 'linked' from conception to death. They can read each other's minds, feel the other's pain etcetera, which is all bullshit. Leo, again, had insisted otherwise until Donnie had tested that theory with the business end of his staff against Leo's skull. He hadn't brought it up again after that.
Then Leo disappears through a portal in the sky.
And Donnie feels him leave.
A small collection of snippets throughout Leo and Donnie’s lives over the years, as the latter reflects on the benefits and drawbacks of being twins. Fluffy and bittersweet all at once, with a happy ending.

And he carried their hope and determination with him every step of the way here. Now he can put all of that down, but that just leaves him with nothing but his empty hands.
Raphael has cried a lot today already, but this just about sends him over the edge all over again.
Set immediately after the business on Staten Island, the family drives home and Raph looks after a too-quiet Casey. A lot of tender family moments ensue, and the author has a great grasp on everyone’s voices as the rest of the family flits around in the background.

With everything that’s happened recently, the invasion, saving the world, almost dying, Leo has become more and more aware of how little he hangs around Donnie, just the two of them. With the knowledge that Donnie died in Casey’s future, that he lost his twin, it hits him hard. Especially in the middle of the night, when his thoughts can linger and his mind can spiral into an endless torrent of misery.
Leo doesn’t know what to do with that knowledge. Leo doesn’t know what to do anymore, besides set it aside and hope, pray to whatever God there may be that he doesn’t conjure up any more unnecessary images that will haunt his dreams.
Donnie has withdrawn somewhat since the invasion. Leo’s love language is physical affection, and he misses spending time with him. They have a hear-to-heart and are there for each other, and I am so soft for this fic.

The funny thing is, Raph barely remembers.
He has... feelings of the time he'd spent as a zombified slave, intents and ideals fed into him like sludge through a straw—the Krang are superior, you are the proof of our might, you will serve us well, squash them, kill it, kill him, KILL HIM—
(He thinks, sometimes, he can still hear it; the sweet nothings of violence the Krang had promised, a seat by the throne built over the bodies of millions, the corpses of his family.)
His left eye saw flashes of what his body was doing, moving to the whim of another, smashing and slicing without restraint, but nothing concrete.
Not until he had Leo struggling to speak, to breathe with his hand (tentacle) wrapped around his throat.
That part is crystal clear.
Weeks after the invasion, Raph and Leo finally talk things out. If you came out of the movie loving it but wishing the writers had given us a little more resolution between the two of them, this fic is a must-read that pulls on the heartstrings and absolutely delivers on the emotional catharsis.

One of Raph's quirks, one he had never deeply considered, as second nature as it was, was biting.
Whenever he’d become so overwhelmed with affection for his family that he felt like it was going to get too big for his body, he’d clamp down on the closest available body part, squeezing enough for his family to feel the pressure of it, but never enough to break their skin. Never enough to actually hurt them.
It’s just something that Raph did. A quirk that no one even blinks at anymore.
So yeah. It’s a harmless quirk, Raph’s affectionate biting.

“Yes, uh – yes yes yes, the game,” Donnie babbled, lunging at the PopMeister and grabbing a bottle to gesture with. “The game we can’t play without you. The rules…are…that we each make a soda for another member of the team. A bespoke drink, catered to their exact specifications – flavours, carbonation level, whatever you feel like your team partner would prefer. We, uh – yes, we mark them out of ten. Whoever makes the highest graded soda wins!”
He beamed at his brother – too widely to be real, a bead of sweat already forming at his temple. Raph and Mikey looked between the two of them, gaze ping-ponging back and forth, breath held tight in their chests. Leo turned.
“One game,” he bargained, walking back towards Donnie, prodding his finger in his brother’s chest. “One, okay?”

He flops onto his sleeping bag and stares at the ceiling fan. The sunset filters through the window in shades of vibrant red and gold, bathing the room in its warmth and Casey with it.
He's too angry to enjoy it, and that only pisses him off more.

Everything Casey had feared and despised is gone, replaced with the warmth, love and care of everyone he knew and everyone he never had the chance to meet. He has a family, a life, a second chance.
But he had a family before, too.

The sigh Donnie let out was so long, so tired. “Dad, I know what you’re doing.”
Splinter bit his cheek. “What do you mean?”
“This whole… thing.” He waved a hand around. “Reading to us, skateboarding, training, painting… like what? Did Leo almost dying make you realize how distant you’ve been lately?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Yes?”
Donatello glared at him and pulled his goggles back over his eyes.
Splinter sighed. “Donatello, I’m not sure what you want me to say.”
“I want you to just go back to normal.” His son snapped. “You don’t have to… pretend to care about all this stuff. It just hurts more when I know it’s not genuine.”
Splinter’s not immune to trauma leftover from the thwarted Krang invasion. After realizing how close he came to losing his boys, Splinter strives to be a better father and close the distance between them, but with Donatello, is it too little too late? “I’m not-” he doesn’t know what he’s not. Not going back down? Not being dangerous? “I’m not angry.” Oh, he thinks. He hadn’t really meant to say that, it doesn’t feel quite true either.
Don sits beside him, not looking at him which is nice. Donnie doesn’t like emotional stuff but he’s still always there, just to make sure they don’t feel like they’re dealing with it alone. It’s so sweet, his brothers are the sweetest. He’s so mad at them, he realizes. He’s furious.
“It’s okay to be angry,” Don says half on an exhale. “If you are, anyways.”
He’s not, but he’s also livid. He’s shaking with it but he’s sad. The big bright things in his chest are clattering stars and they’re making riptides of gravity wells and mini apocalypses. There’s too much noise in there, it’s impossible to pin down or think around.
Leo nearly sacrificed everything for his brothers, and Mikey’s not okay with that actually. The exploration of Mikey’s anger and hurt is expertly done, and nails the whole quiet fragility that can sometimes come after a traumatic experience. Very well done; very bittersweet.

It should hardly register as a period of existence but it slams into Donnie’s mind with an ugly ferocity, a horrid split second of not being anything, of ceasing to be at all in a way his analytical brain cannot comprehend.
And then, quite suddenly, he is everything.
Donatello struggles with the aftermath of having been fused to the Technodrome; it’s putting it lightly to say he doesn’t like the way it makes him feel about himself. This fic is all hurt, no comfort, but it’s a fascinating bit of character introspection.

"Get back here, young man—"
Something rushes past her and she hears a thump as it slides on the floor and under the bed. Cassandra looks up from the map she's studying as Donnie walks into the room, one of his eyebrows twitching. He immediately zeroes in on her.
"Jones, where's the child?"
She puts the map down. "Why?"
Donnie lets out an impatient sigh, fingers tapping against his thigh as he looks over and around the furniture.
"He took a small prototype for Shelldon's pocket size upgrade and then took off like the little demon spawn he is." The soft shell explains briefly, looking at her accusingly as if the whole situation were her fault. Cassandra smirks.
"My kid would never."
Snippets of Casey’s life growing up in the apocalypse, in one of the very few fluffy fics out there for the fandom during this period. Believe me when I say the hurt’s definitely still there, though.

Character Focus: Michelangelo & Leonardo (Mikey-centric), Ensemble
Genre: Angst, Character Study
Mikey sighed. "Listen, Case. I’m not Leo. Wanna tag along on this field trip—fine. I won’t stop you. But that one?” Mikey licked his lips. Widened the mirror so Casey could get a glimpse. “That one’s mine, capiche?”
Casey was a second too late—rule number 4: always assume there's more; he kept forgetting that one—as another Kraang speared its body between them, some half-alien, half-machine horror. Mikey’s face remained unchanged. He flicked his free wrist once, and chains snaked around the Kraang’s hissing face, its torso writhing as muscle and cable alike bulged out.
We spoiled the hell out of him, 'specially Raph—the things he got away with, Case, I swear, like one time—but that's the baby brother, you know? It's in the baby brother contract. He could doom the world with his freaky mystic stuff—Leo gripped an invisible ball in his hands and squeezed—and it'll be just another Tuesday . . .
Finally, Casey found his voice, which cracked wonderfully down the middle. “We shouldn't—Leonardo-sensei said not to go alone." Chains tightened. The Kraang made a panicked bleat. "It’s dangerous to engage without—”
“Tell Leonardo-sensei,” Mikey said, the weight in his eyes sharpening into a spearpoint, a wild throw, “finder’s keepers.”
His fist closed. POP! Leo was saying, booping a young Casey’s nose.
A dark, but fascinating take on Leo and Mikey’s relationship in the bad timeline, and how the death of their brothers may have fractured it. Grief can do terrible things to people, and seeing the way it warps Mikey and turns his best qualities into his worst is deeply gripping.
If you like this one, consider following it up with its companion piece in prodigal at your door, a follow-up touching on Leo’s side of things!

Character Focus: Leonardo & April
Genre: Hurt/Comfort
He slams his fist against the wall and it cracks at the impact, bones crunching painfully. He doesn't even wince, and a growl escapes from deep in his throat.
"He's dead! Is that what you want me to say? Because that's all there is to say: Raph is fucking dead. You know that, I know that, we all know that. He isn’t with us anymore, he’s just—"
Gone.
She watches him unravel, the invisible tear in her chest aching.
Leo—
"So why—" his voice cracks to a whisper and he looks at her with such loss that her heart breaks. The fight and the anger leave his body as if they've been sucked out by grief. "So why can't I cry?"
April confronts Leo on how he’s been closing himself off since Raph’s death. We all cry for it.

Character Focus: Leonardo & Cassandra & Raphael & Casey, Ensemble
Genre: Angst, Family Bonding
The two of them are roasting rats over the fire—one of Splinter’s old recipes, in fact—when Casey says “Hey. Asshole. If anything happens to me, you’re godfather.”
Leonardo, preoccupied with looking over Kraang patrol patterns, grunts an affirmative. And then the words penetrate all the way and he almost drops the map into the flames.
“I’m what? You’re WHAT?”
“Whozzat?” Raph demands, lurching up from where he’d been dozing against the wall. “Who’s dying?”
“No one’s dying,” Leonardo says, still staring at Casey and her evil gremlin grin that says she knew exactly how much this would fuck with him and is living for it. “The opposite, I think?”
“What?” Raph adjusts his eyepatch to squint at him. “What do you mean, the opposite?”
“Casey’s pregnant,” Leo says and he’s still kind of waiting for Casey to laugh and call him a sucker because ha ha what the fuck.
This fic follows Leo in the bad future, starting from when Cassandra announces her pregnancy and to the bitter end. Everyone gets a bit of well-done screentime, but the fic is particularly focused on Leo, Cassandra, Raph, and little Casey, and how the bond between all four of them changes over time—something stronger than blood and deceptively fragile in the face of time, but never broken. You are not alone.
