Red-bellies are rarely seen touching the ground. But a kernel of food on such a day, makes a bird do strange things.

the red-bellied woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker species common in the eastern united states (although their range expands to canada in the north and florida in the south, with occasional vagrants appearing outside this range). they are named for the pale red-pink marking on their bellies, which can be hard to see in the field. males are distinguished by their red cap; females lack the bright red cap, but have a red nape. these birds primarily feed on arthropods gleaned from tree trunks, although they also feed on insects, fruits, and seeds. they are known for their ‘drilling’ behavior, primarily done to excavate nesting sites + ward off competitors.

“Graceful Ascension: Observing the Female Red-Bellied Woodpecker Scale Trees” - Copilot
This female, red-bellied woodpecker was around a couple of days ago. I find it amusing to watch them walk straight up a tree.
I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I like this photo, but I'm not sure if I'll add it to the gallery. I usually wait a couple of days to see how I feel about it then.
You can check out my gallery at: swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
