This big bug beauty was on my patio door in the Tennessee Valley a couple years ago. I have no idea what it is, looks like a souped-up dragonfly (the spikes! the fuzz!), and if I recall correctly it was... loud? Like noisily buzzing? I think that's what drew my attention to it. Anyway it's one cool, weird bug 👍
This beefy friend is a red-footed cannibalfly (Promachus rufipes), which is a species of robberfly. They’re super tough predators who will eat just about any other bug they can wrestle into submission, including other robberflies (hence their common name), bees, and wasps! That’s pretty hardcore. What a great find! Thanks for sharing! As always, submissions don’t count towards the one (1) nice bug per day.

8/27/17     Species Promachus rufipes - Red-footed Cannibalfly
Yes they bite!!!!!!  Closest thing I can think of is a bee sting.  And the little claws are super sharp, an awesome grip for a fly.
Class Insecta (Insects) Order Diptera (Flies) No Taxon  (Orthorrhapha) Superfamily Asiloidea Family Asilidae (Robber Flies) Subfamily Asilinae Genus Promachus (Giant Robber Flies) Species rufipes (Red-footed Cannibalfly)

Giant ‘Bee Panther’ Insect Snacks On Wasps And Bees – CBS DC
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (CBS Native) — In case you see an enormous insect attacking a bee or a wasp this summer time, you’ve most likely stumbled upon a bee panther.
Often known as the red-footed cannibalfly, the bee panther is a sort of robber fly, a reputation that displays its aggressive predatory habits.
Consultants say bee panthers like to cover out and look forward to a bee or wasp to fly by earlier than launching at it in flight, stabbing it with its mouth half, often called the proboscis, and killing it.
Once they’re able to eat, the bee panther injects the prey with a saliva cocktail that immobilizes it and liquefies their insides.
See this large bug snacking on a wasp? It is known as the Bee Panther, or ‘Pink-footed Cannibalfly.’

Grownup cannibalflies are additionally recognized to assault dragonflies, grasshoppers, spiders and even hummingbirds.
Consultants say the fly does play an necessary ecological position throughout the Southeast. Nonetheless, whereas it doesn’t pose any severe menace to people, they are saying don’t attempt to catch one.
“There’s no venom however it does have some saliva and digestive enzymes that may be irradiating — however simply the bodily chew can be painful,” Laura Russo, an assistant professor on the College of Tennessee in Knoxville, informed WBIR.
Consultants say the life span of the fly isn’t very lengthy it solely lasts about two to 3 weeks they usually choose wooded areas.

And now for a non-caterpillar picture.
Red-footed Cannibalfly (Promachus rufipes) feeding on a Blue Dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis). Newark DE. August 2017.
This fly can get to over an inch in size (>30 mm). They survey open fields and meadows for flying insects, returning to their perch after they’ve caught themselves a meal (or perch upside-down like this one).
They can catch and kill prey much larger than themselves, like this dragonfly, and have even been known to take down hummingbirds. Typically, they go after bees and wasps, and are sometimes called ‘bee-killers’ as a result.
Larva tend to live below the soil, feeding on roots and arthropods. One generation a year in the Mid-Atlantic, with adults common by late summer.

Sworn protector of the squash plant. I saw this lady eat mason wasps, squash bugs, house flies, and much more. Predatory bugs like this are so cool to watch, seeing their speed, accuracy and ruthlessness reminds me of birds of prey. No wonder some call them "bee panther".

Oh what about my favorite predatory flying insect the Robber Fly?
like dragonflies, they’re another type of hyper-competent aerial predator that simply outflies and outpowers anything else in the air! plus there’s a robber fly species called the Red-Footed Cannibalfly, and what’s not to love about that?
Tumblr media
(I do wish they wouldn’t pick on bees so much, though)
