Among the leaves
Another set of pictures I took for school - this time leaf-themed! (The first one I took for myself, though, was in my free time. I had trouble with it as I was being pelted by a sudden downpour. But it turned out great)
The flowering shrub in the second and third pictures is the Wintergreen Barberry. It has barbs which keep out critters trying to feast on its fruit. The berries of the Berberis are edible and have been used in cooking for centuries. The shrubs in my pictures were only starting to flower, though, so there was no fruit at the time. They are native to Asia, Europe and Africa, with the Berberis Julianae orginating from China. However, it is also a popular landscaping plant and can, at present, be found anywhere with even temperatures.
For a very long time, they were used for medicinal purposes as they contain a component named berberine, which acts like an antioxidant. Normally, there are no side effects from consuming Barberry, but at high doses, people can experience nosebleeds and vomiting.
There are many uses for the fruit, but I would still recommend not eating random berries from wild plants.
