One thing I love about Billy’s character is his emotions are so erratic and unpredictable. He cries at the drop of a hat when overwhelmed or scared, he’s cool and collected when he’s around kids his age, a bucket of disdain around Max, he backtalks his dad but bends the knee when he gets aggressive, he laughs when Steve makes him bleed and he’s the perfect womaniser when he wants to be. He likes the attention of women, especially older women (maybe due to being abandoned by his mother *cough*).
Every person you talk to would likely have a different opinion on Billy Hargrove. Maybe he wants it that way. But if you were to know his past you’d see through him like glass and that’s what’s amazing about him. He is just another hot douchebag with anger issues until you see beneath his mask and we only really see beneath it when he breaks out of his possession temporarily in the sauna and when he dies.
And what truly baffles and amazes me is that a lot of people will never see Billy the way Eleven of all people did. That’s why he dies protecting her. He tried one last act of repentance for her. Because she finally saw beneath all the walls and pulled him from that dark, scary place.
I like to think if Billy had survived, he would have finally allowed himself to work on being at peace with his anger and resentment and allowed Eleven to teach him how to hold onto good and make new beginnings with friends. And with Max, especially.
