Give me God of War!! (Ares OOAK, Part 1)

okay, you know, how craft works.

One day you've just become attached to GOW with ropes and tears. Another day you've decided in your head that you can't breath without any figure from this game.

You probably buy Kratos action figure (as I did) and probably feel yourself satisfied because your money are safe now (as I thought too! I can't have armored Kratos on his olympic throne, cause I don't have a third kidney, sadly, so I was very pleased with a little god Kratos figure (Neca). After fixing up paint on his face, I look at him and think ohw, you are gorgeous :зззззз).

So, you are moving forward, replay or rewatch god of war games, especially the first games... you are fine.

UNTIL you decide that you are an adept, who stans GOW Ares. You fire up this dump and can't live your life without Ares doll. Idol. I-doll.

If you are me, then you can understand. As Ares said, flesh burns, bones breaks, but putting man into making a custom doll is what truly destroys him. So I hugged my family to increase my level of rage and started. Now you can go under the cut

Actually, I wouldn't do it, but there is no GOW Ares figures in this cruel world at all. Sadly! He is beautiful red-haired war baby, isn't he?

And I like his original design more than the one we have in Ascension. (Althought I like his non-armored outfit (red chiton) from Ascension concept arts, which wasn't used). Anyway, if we want to have our own god of war, we have one way to figure it out.

Personally I've seen only one Ares OOAK in the internet. It was at Neca Kratos base and it was kinda fine. There was completely re-sculpted head, but the body was without any changes. Kratos in his slut era (thank you tumblr, you are the best) was really scraggy, so Ares with his thin waist looked funny 😅.

Well, anyway, Ares wasn't a thin reed and loved to hunch over, so we need to be canon.

I would say, I am not an OOAKer at all, I've just customized my own ball-joined dolls a couple of times, and I say it straightly, making Ares bjd would be nice, but it probably turns out to an endless torture for me and my finances. So for the base I decided to chose 1/6 scale action figure. I needed to harvest a head and a body. It is going to be a re-sculpted hybrid anyway, so we can ignore color difference and stuff. Yes, I devoted my heart and aliexpress account to Ares 🥲

Whoever recognized the head donor actor, well done x) A bit of alcohol and nail cutter for the eyes (it's varnish was undestructible, holy shit..) will manually wipe out his personality forever, bye

Beautiful face. But totally needs to be reworked. Ares has unique face features like a round forehead, wide mouth, full upper lip and a bit potato, but still hellenic nose (isn't it precious? 💕). Honestly I think Santa Monica made him really pleasing and beautiful man in his mature ages. He is not old, but you feel that he is not young too already.

So I took out my Ares iconostasis, which allows me to absorb his beauty from all angles, and started a portrait sculpting.

It was a little hell, but after letting all changes dry, I sanded it and tinted head using airbrush so it will be able to match a body color. Quick matching test:

As you can see, both body and head has a good tan skintone. And I know, Ares in GOW1 is as pale as Kratos.

Why am I not tinted him in ashy grey color? 1) It is night in a game, colors are faded because of it, 2) I tried and it looked messy, really... 3) I headcanon that both Ares and Kratos have the same reason for that: Ares is covered in ashes too. But Ares is not cursed, he is like.. always in contact with fire.

So I think that under this grey dust Ares has classic olive skin, same as Kratos. That's why I leave my Ares as if he was washed in a bath and get tidy like he is going to visit Aphrodite's chamber 💫. Anyway if I want to, I just can use photo filters to change it.

Okay, things become serious now.

We've finally reached to the face up.. And my working table lies in ruins and not usable anymore because of the fucking mess after previous steps.

God dammit on me and every single hair I drew in his eyebrows, but I have to say, it was really exciting to paint him. Finally give him his own gaze, brighten up his lips and cheeks. I didn't want to make him an angry bitch. Because he is not this person for me, neither in myths, nor in the game. He is a god, who lived through a lot of mortal lives and has seen a different kinds of.. chaos you know. OG Kratos is an infant compared to him I mean if you think of amount of past experience Ares has. Imho, he wasn't even truly angry at Kratos in GOW1. So I painted his expression how I feel and interpret his main emotional tone. Ares can be purely wrathful, but wrath is not cynical. That's what i think of him.

Okay, when the god became able to truly look after me, I couldn't hesistate and started to made the most iconic feature of him. His flaming hair and beard.

And I'll say it if you don't. I absolutely ❤ adore ❤ his red tousled mane ❤ .

(Just imagine Aphrodite tugging it or brushing, or just bury her face in his hair, because she knows that he will never burn her with his flames. I want to draw this now...)

I wanted his hair to be soft, easily combed and glowing without any electric lights. Gladly I've worked with a doll hair for a long time already.

Earlier I didn't cut off all of plastic hair from the head, only changed hairline by moving it a bit upper from his forehead. It was a part of the plan from the beginning. For the dolls I usually use very thin wool, and plastic mold will provide needed volume for his front combed strands. Screenshots before the eyes, two days of straggling (I wanted all hair to be removable without damaging varnish on his face) and we finally done.

And honestly I don't even want to shorten his hair. He is a perfection.

Word of the day (Day 5)

Hii!!! Today is day 5 and i'm here with a mostly worldbuilding post. (mostly wordbuilding thursday???)

As you can see, it looks exactly the same as the "water" root character i showed you yesterday:

Indeed, the shape of the "water" root word comes from this knife.

As the speakers of my language (or the Windpeople, as i now call them) live in a desert, water is obviously very important to them. Luckily, they have a large, humid marshland and a river delta near where they live, caused by some mysterious supernatural event. (more on that when i flesh it out a bit more)

The plants that grow in the marsh are tall and woody, like bamboo but much wetter. One such type, the One-Wind, grows a waxy, red fruit at the top, to attract birds and insects more easily. Due to the high humidity and large amount of mosquitos, these fruits are rarely harvested, and are considered a delicacy reserved for the royal family and the top few houses of the aristocracy.

The fruits don't even taste that good. By the time they've arrived from the marsh, it's gotten all mushy and gross from the hot weather, and the royals only eat it to show off to their friends and to keep the tradition alive.

Anyways, back to the knife:

To harvest the fruit, people trained for this job first use the knife to chop down the tall bamboo-like stalks of the One-Wind, which they then tie three or more together with a few reeds for stability. Grooves are cut into the stalk, and the harvesters then climb the stalk with the knife in hand, using it as a grappling hook whenever they feel wobbly and unstable.

At the top of the makeshift ladder, the harvester secures their feet into small grooves cut into the stalk. Then, they hold the knife with their dominant hand, cutting the fruit off and catching it with their other hand. This is the hardest part of the process, as it's dangerous and near impossible. If the fruit drops and smashes into the ground below, the harvester has to repeat the process until they get at least one.

Due to this, the harvesters slowly started to pray to different deities to bless their knife, both for the safety of themselves and the fruits.

This is basically a label for the knife, kinda like a shop label doubling as an advertisement, to let people know what the item is and how powerful it is.

who: @jin-renshu summary: while traveling through the north, owen makes his way to sea dragon point to speak with renshu about changes he wants to make regarding the others position in his realm, and changes to rules and roles.

The population of Sea Dragon Point was experiencing a boom. He noticed it as travelled and made their way to meet with his Lord Commander and speak about what has transpired. The death of Meera Reed hung over the heads of the North and the council. There were men who sided with Duke Karstark and those courtiers took their leave when their Duke returned to his lands. The rift caused by the little King saw those who followed the and the First Men under Duke Manderly to take an equally hard stand on their beliefs. The North was fractured by everything and he needed to bridge those gaps.

"It's good to see there's been much progress. I heard tale war didn't reach the lands. Many of the wood cutters were able to continue their works as instructed." Owen walked with his Lord Commander through the apartments the King would be staying in until they reached his solar. He took a seat on one of the cushioned chairs over sitting behind the desk. This was going to be a long conversation.

"The death of Meera Reed has shaken the realm, disrupted the council. I 've made the decision to not take your head at the cost of my brother, the hand of the king. Nothing will change that, even if I changed my mind today the damage is done. I know you believed you were doing what you thought best. You did not." Owen leaned back in his chair. "Next time, you are not to make decisions based off what you know from Yi-Ti. You're in the North. Should there be a new queen and someone grabs her wrist, cut off their hand instead of cutting their throat." Owen didn't know how he felt about it all. He knew that it would set a bad precedent to kill the Lord Commander for doing his duty. The next person could take hold of his arm and the new lord commander could hesitate long enough for the King to die.

"Duke Karstark will not be returning to Winterfell, not for the moment. Perhaps one day." He doubted it. "For now we must discuss your place at court."

The Royal Tar accident

The Royal Tar was a sidewheel steamer with a schooner sailplan, launched in November 1835 at Carleton.

When the ship sailed from her berth at Peter's Wharf, Eastport, on 21 October 1836, under the command of Captain Reed, she had a crew of 21 and 70 passengers, including a number of women and children. The passenger list was more extensive than usual as members of a menagerie and their animals, of the Burgess and Dexter Zoological Institute were on board. The animals on board were an elephant, six horses, two dromedaries, two lionesses, a leopard, a Bengal tiger, a gnu, a pair of pelicans and several serpents and exotic birds. There was also a large wax figure cabinet, a safe with the passengers' treasures inside, and a huge show wagon called an omnibus, as well as wagons to transport the cages and the horses to pull them.

The second half of October 1836 saw severe weather on the coast, and when the Royal Tar left Eastport on the evening of 21 October, the wind blew so hard from the west that the steamer pulled to safety at Little River (near Cutler). The storm continued for three days, but on the afternoon of 24 October another attempt was made to continue the voyage. In heavy seas and a persistent westerly wind, the steamer anchored again in Machias Bay and stayed until midnight, when the wind shifted to the northwest and the voyage was resumed.

In the afternoon of 25 October, the engineer reported that the water level in the boiler had become too low. When the captain heard this report, he ordered the engine to be stopped and the safety valve opened to let out the steam and cool down the engine so that it could not cause a fuer. But it was already too late. About 2,4 km from the Fox Islands in Penobscot Bay, it was discovered that the hot boiler had started a fire.  An attempt was made to extinguish the flames with a hose attached to the pump, but this was unsuccessful. The fire spread rapidly and soon consumed the fire-fighting equipment, leaving only the option of abandoning the Royal Tar.

Now the Royal Tar would have had four boats, but to get all the animals and equipment on board, two were left ashore, so there were only two left. Captain Reed and two of the crew lowered the small boat at the stern and climbed aboard to prepare rafts of debris and rescue as many people as possible. Sixteen of the crew, however, lowered the second, larger boat and left the others to their fate. They rowed themselves until they reached Isle au Haut, but what became of them is not known.

There was no rescue for the animals, however, and all but two of the horses died. Allegedly, the elephant also managed to break free and go overboard, killing several people in the process, before the animal itself drowned.

Captain Reed and his remaining men, however, kept the boat on standby and, as the terrified passengers began to jump overboard, were able to save several of them by rowing them to the U.S. revenue cutter Veto, who had seen the fire and sailed to the scene to help. However, as the cutter was carrying a lot of gunpowder, Veto could not help directly and had to wait at some distance.

In the end, 32 lives were lost, including four men, nine women and 10 children. And four hours after catching fire, the Royal Tar sank beneath the waves, with all its treasures. Attempts to recover some of it have so far been in vain.

I have always been Team Bialy. Not to say I won’t eat a bagel, but if there is a choice between a morning bagel or a morning bialy, I am choosing that round carb filled with onions and poppy seeds.

Bialys, like bagels, come from Poland. Bialy is actually short for Bialystoker Kuchen (German) or Byalestoker kukhn (Yiddish), both meaning “bread from Bialystok, Poland.” But the two have some key differences. For starters, bagels are boiled and then baked, whereas bialys are just baked. Bialys have a much softer texture than bagels, and instead of a hole in the middle, they are filled with their signature onions and poppy seeds.

“At the beginning of the 20th century, bialys were a staple of the city and region,” writes Caleb Guedes-Reed for The Nosher. “They were most often served with butter or soft cheese but were also served with herring and, occasionally, with halvah. For the wealthy, kuchen was a part of the meal, while, for the poor, it was the meal.”

Jewish immigrants in New York began baking bialys sometime around 1920. Kossar’s, a bakery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, has been producing bialys for 85 years and is one of the institutions most closely associated with bialys today. But the inspiration for these bialy bourekas came not from the Lower East Side, but from Tel Aviv. My colleague Rachel Myerson spotted onion-and-poppy-seed bourekas earlier this year at Hama’afia bakery, a small chain in Tel Aviv. I love when culinary traditions collide, resulting in something that is both new and old, fresh yet nostalgic.

These pockets aren’t complicated to make, since they use store-bought puff pastry. While chopping five onions does take some time and patience, the filling can be prepared ahead of time. I like to chop onions while listening to a good podcast or binge-watching my favorite show.

You can shape these bourekas any way you like, though I did try to recreate the bakery version. This recipe makes six large bourekas, but you can fold the pastry into smaller triangles if you want smaller portions.

Notes:

You can make the filling (see Direction 1) a few hours, or even 1-2 days, ahead of time.

Frozen puff pastry should be thawed in the fridge for a couple of hours before using.

Tools that would be helpful to make this dish include:

a vegetable chopper (for chopping all those onions!)

a silicone rolling mat to use as a work surface

a rolling pin for rolling out the puff pastry

a pastry brush for the egg wash

and a pizza cutter for cutting the dough.

Okay, this painting is very different from the vast majority of my works.  It does include a Common Raven (Corvus corax), but in the distance, not “up close and personal”, the way I usually portray birds and other animals. Someday I’ll do a painting featuring the raven up close in my usual manner, it being a bird of great interest and importance to me, with a little more “realism” than in this painting. And I will describe some of the fantastic things about this incredible bird. But the Common Raven is integral to the motivation that inspired the painting.

This abandoned house has been that way for several years and is located on the east side of 9th Line, a once rural road running north and south, near my home, that I frequently drive on.  In summer it has the nearest farmer’s market.  A few years ago it was widened (in spite of protests) from two lanes to four, putting this old farm house that much nearer the edge of the road.  This is prime farmland, will soon be turned into subdivision. The house is a little more decrepit each time I drive by (the painting shows it more or less as it was about two winters ago) and I know one day I’ll drive by and see it being demolished, or gone. I may even live to see the inevitable subdivision that will replace it (and be called a “development”).  But I am already seeing the price of food go up in the store, and to me the house is a symbol of the adage, “change is the only constant.”

My paternal grandfather was the only doctor for this whole region from around the late 1930s, maybe earlier, into around the late `50s, or so. I remember him well. He lived on Main Street, Unionville (that house still stands and is now the United Church manse), where I lived for the first three years of my life, and visited, and sometimes stayed overnight, thereafter through my childhood. There was a small barn in the back where he kept a horse and cutter (before my time, but I loved to explore it) to make winter house-calls when snow blocked the roads. 9th Line would was a lonely, dirt road, but farm country.

Before that, of course, it was boreal forest and if you go back not all that far, it was inhabited by, among other things, wild elephants. People arrived and that was the end of the elephants – we now call them mammoths and mastodons – and other wildlife species. Before elephants roamed those forests there was – not much, since it was all under a massive weight of ice – the last ice age, petering out some eleven thousand years ago, allowing the arrival of various new wildlife species, and humans, with change, always change, the only constant.

As a kid growing up we never, ever saw Common Ravens this far south.  They have a massive range throughout so much of the northern hemisphere, but although they were found to the south, in the mountains of eastern U.S., to the east, on the coast, and just a two hour drive to the north, not here.

But all that has changed, too. The box alders and phragmites reeds and other weeds and grasses in the painting are not native. Common Ravens are, and while they are not common locally, I now do see them with growing regularity, here in Markham, and in Stouffville, the next town north, on the 9th Line, and in the farm country in between, as it turns into residential subdivision, as winters grow shorter, extreme climate events more frequent, wild fires burn and my grocery bill increases, and I don’t want to imagine, nor will I be here to see, what is to come.

This is in oils, on compressed hardboard and is approximately 16 by 20 inches.  And I wonder if, as seems possible, one day a long time ago (as we tend to measure time), a young doctor, my grandfather, visited this house, then new, perhaps in winter in his horse and cutter, warm under a buffalo robe, maybe to deliver a baby or aid an injured farm hand?  Now, on 9th Line, walking distance north of me, a few miles south of the house, is a big hospital, where my mother died, where we all now go for help…a big change from the days of the country doctor, where shaggy elephants once roamed through dark forests.

Blue Jays Silence Twins Bats.

Blue Jays 5 Twins 1 W-Francis (2-1) L-Ober (1-1)

The Toronto Blue Jays made the long trip down from Dunedin today to square off with the Twins. The Jays bats were ready from the start as Santiago Espinal led-off with a double to left. Ernie Clement reached on an error by Royce Lewis and Davis Schneider hit a sac fly to center to put Toronto on the board first. The Blue Jays got back to work in the second as Spencer Horwitz lined a one-out single to right. Brian Serven smacked a Bailey Ober pitch out to left-center for a two-run homer. This put Toronto up 3-0 after two frames. The Twins found some offense in the third with a Ryan Jeffers lead-off single. Manny Margot reached on an error by Eduardo Escobar and Eddie Julien lined an RBI single to left. Minnesota pulled within a pair after three innings. Pitching dominated the middle innings and Bowden Francis threw six solid innings. The Jays would add on in the eighth with a Nathan Lukes one-out walk. Rafael Lantigua doubled him home and Toronto quickly loaded the bases up in the ninth. Steward Berroa drew a bases loaded walk to give the Jays a four-run lead. Wes Parsons tossed three shutout innings in relief as the Jays picked up the win today in Fort Myers.

-Final Thoughts- Bailey Ober got roughed up a bit and was working on his cutter. He went 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Denny Bentley got out of the second before Bailey Ober returned in the third. Ryan Jensen put up a zero in the fourth, Griffin Jax gave up a hit in the fifth, and Michael Boyle threw two shutout innings with two strikeouts. Sheldon Reed gave up a run in the eighth and Malik Barrington did the same in a wild ninth. Eddie Julien and Ryan Jeffers each had two hits on the day. The Twins hit 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. Tomorrow, Jordan Balazovic faces Garrett Whitlock as the Twins head across town to play the Red Sox in a night game.

Hello everyone Ricky Goldman here.

1st match is Logan Paul vs Ricochet. Both men with a slow pace and both jockeying for position, Logan took over and gained control. Good match from both men,certainly Ricochets best match he pulled the people's moonsault to no avail,both men pulling out some good moves here,this certainly went the distance,both men coming close to a victory here. Logan did a moonsault into a DDT but didn't get it done,Ricochet stayed in in, back and forth they went, Ricochet came close but couldn't get it done, a guy at ringside gave Logan a set of brass knuckles to get the win as he knocked out Ricochet to gain the dub.

Next up Brock Lesnar vs Cody Rhodes. Brock taking Cody to suplex city early on,Cody pulled out multiple super kicks but Brock soon took over and beat Cody down with lots more suplexs,Lesnar stays on Cody taking it to him,Brock F5s Cody on the outside,Cody gets up so another suplex from Brock followed by an F5 through the announce table but once again Cody makes his way back in the ring,Cody is more than spent but continues to fight hitting a couple of Cody cutters,Brock gets the Kimura on Cody but Rhodes survives he then went for the Kimura lock then cody hits 3 cross Rhodes for the W.

Up next the Summerslam battle Royal. Omos enters last. Apollo Crews,Cameron Grimes,Ridge Holland,Ludwig Kaiser,Rick Boogs all eliminated. Omos eliminating botn Butch and Matt Riddle.
