The Jewish history of Disney’s Snow White

The first full length animated feature “Snow White” came out in 1937, with the rise of Nazi Germany, and was set to release in Germany as ‘Schneewittchen’ in 1938. The German dub was recorded in Amsterdam along the Dutch dub. Joseph Goebbels, the nazi minister of propaganda, liked the movie, and even hoped to develop a home grown nazi animation industry. The movie never made it to German theatres due to a financial disagreement between Disney and German distribution companies, but was distributed in other German speaking countries, such as Switzerland, and was released in Austria and West Germany after the war. The movie was re-dubbed in German multiple times, the most well known one being the 1999 dub. Adolf Hitler himself was quite a Disney fan – although he kept it secret, two Schneewittchen posters were found among his belongings.

During that time, most voice actors in foreign dubs were not credited for their work. However, some of the voices in Schneewittchen are remembered as the work of famous actors from that time. Most of the voice actors that worked on the ’38 version of Schneewittchen in Amsterdam were Jewish immigrants who fled from Germany.

Kurt Gerron Z”L (1897-1944) directed both the German and Dutch dubs, and voiced three characters in the movie (Sleepy, Bashful and The Magic Mirror). He was transported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto (modern day Czech Republic), and forced to direct a propaganda film about the “good life” in the ghetto. When the film was done, Kurt and the movie’s cast were transferred to Auschwitz (Poland) and murdered in the gas chambers.

Otto Wallburg Z”L (1889-1944), a famous actor and comedian, who starred in many silent and talking films, voiced Doc (the head dwarf). He too was murdered in Auschwitz.

Dora Gerson Z”L (1899-1943), a famous singer and silent film actress, voiced The Evil Queen. After fleeing Germany, she and her family attempted to flee from The Netherlands to Switzerland, but was captured and taken to Auschwitz.

Kurt Lilien Z”L (1882-1943), a famous film actor, voiced Sneezy and Grumpy. He was sent to the Sobibor extermination camp (Poland) and murdered.

Sig Arno Z”L (1895-1975), a famous film actor voiced Happy. On a happier note, he escaped Europe in 1939 and settled in Hollywood and continued acting. He passed away at age 79.

Schneewittchen’s singing was done by the famous Jewish opera singer Frieda Roos Van Hessen (1915), who lives to this day in North Carolina. She published the autobiographies "Life in the Shadow of the Swastika” and “From Singer To Survivor”.
