The Reform candidate for the Mid-Bedfordshire by-election yesterday looks like he’s about to headbutt you outside a pub while his goth “biker mama” watches. (Labour won – phew!). Is it wrong that I do love his powder blue suit? (I would wear it with a ruffled shirt).

I'm legit asking on here having actually gone through the process of how electoral politics works, including and especially canvassing, and candidate selection, how much disaffection and local resentment can play in deciding an sway an election, and how a very media-savvy charismatic candidate saying the right keypoints around a constituency, particularly one that's really deprived and one of many regions which experiend the brunt of deindustrialisation.
Like, I want people to really think about what happened during the rochdale by-election and why the result happened. This was a by-election where:
We had three candidates who were had either been Labour MPs at one point, or within the party machine only to fall into disfavor - including within the by-election itself.
Speaking of the Labour candidate, the reason why he fell into disfavour despite up until that point being a 'company man' is that he said in an event that the October 7 events happened with Israel's foreknowledge. Saying that like that on its own whether it's true or not (it isn't) is deeply embarassing for Labour which is committed to supporting Israel, and weaponised antisemitism to clear out/suppress its left-wing - especially if you can't switch out a new candidate in time.
The Green Party candidate was found to have posted Islamophobic remarks years before and also had to stop campaigning, and likewise, the Green Party couldn't change their candidate cos it was too late.
The local Labour branch quietly mouthed support for someone booted out of their tribe: Simon Dancuzk, a nasty dude selected for the Reform Party, a metamorphosed UKIP - who basically was only out because he was sexxting an underage girl - all to keep out Galloway. Yes, Labour was banking on a sex pest that they booted out to keep out a political nemesis.
A well-known vehicle shop owner presumably with his own money, was able to get out his messaging better than the establishment candidates, and was rewarded in the by-election with second-place.
Yes, Galloway is a vain, chauvinistic blowhard but he understands what the miasma of labourism in dissaffected areas does, and that's basically why the Worker's Party basically exists - Galloway also happens to legitimately hate Britain's foreign policy in the Middle East, something that will bring the support of the Muslim base. They're not going to care about that time he pretended to be a cat on big brother twenty years ago, if right now he's saying what Labour and the Tories won't say - that what's happening in Gaza is a genocide conducted by Israel with the material support of the British government. Labour is pissed as the main opposition not because they actually think Galloway's an antisemite, but because he represents the very real possibility that they could leak blocs of so-called 'natural voters' to independent candidates just when they thought they had a tight election program, and Galloway's gonna be slamming them from the left, which the Tories may capitalise on. They'll blame Galloway but they honestly it is no-one but themselves that they should blame.
So that's the rub. It's amazing that after ten years of shit like this going back to the Scottish referendum, nobody seems to have lerned anything, and on here what comes out is this moralistic chastising. It's not about whether what happened is 'good', it's about understand the conditions for why it happened, and why things like it will happen again.

what does it mean when people say stuff like individual morality or action is incompatible with class analysis or class struggle?
alright so like one of the key ideas about class analysis is the idea that classes (as a whole) have economic interests that affect all their members but don't extrapolate out to an individual analysis.
for example, let's say that you can't find a job, and somebody offers to pay you below the table for below minimum wage. it's in your individual interest to do this--it beats having no job! but as a member of the working class, once this practice becomes normalized, suddenly the standards of pay for everyone are lower because people know that they can just pay less than minimum wage under the table. competition between workers for jobs drives wages down for everyone, leaving them all in a worse situation overall even if each individual choice to scab, to accept lower pay, to resist unionization, etc, leaves the person who makes it better off. cf. karl marx on what happens when wages and working conditions deteriorate:
The labourer seeks to maintain the total of his wages for a given time by performing more labour, either by working a great number of hours, or by accomplishing more in the same number of hours. Thus, urged on by want, he himself multiplies the disastrous effects of division of labour. The result is: the more he works, the less wages he receives. And for this simple reason: the more he works, the more he competes against his fellow workmen, the more he compels them to compete against him, and to offer themselves on the same wretched conditions as he does; so that, in the last analysis, he competes against himself as a member of the working class.
— Karl Marx, Wage Labour & Capital
similarly, any individual member of the working class is completely dispensable and replaceable by capital. if one person refuses to work unless they're paid a higher wage, they'll be fired and replaced with somebody who doesn't. the individual worker has no economic leverage whatsoever. but the working class has incredible economic leverage! and so does the intermediate stage between the working class and the individual--organized segments of the working class (e.g. trade unions) have economic leverage. if one person strikes, the capitalist can fire them. if 40,000 people strike, your industry is going to shut down.
so the reason why class analysis is compatible with individual action is that your incentives measurably change when you start organizing--it's in the interests of the individual to compete, but in the interests of the class to cooperate. and obviously you cannot just expect everyone to spontaneously coordinate! you, the individual, are disposable to capital! if you, personally, refuse to take the under-the-table offer, either on moral grounds or because you recognize your class interest, your neighbour's going to take it--unless you and her get together and agree that neither of you will take it. that's the only way that the guy making the offer is going to have to give in and offer the job for a living wage.
and this is what organization is--trade unions (although they have severe limitations!), communist parties, and other worker's organizations allow the working class to pursue their collective interest--which can only be pursued by collective action, because engaging in the strategies of collective action as an individual, without the cooperation of your peers, is high risk for no reward.

Tuvok says that Vulcan children are very well behaved and have a lot of emotional control by the time they’re ~elementary school aged which makes sense but also makes me want to see what a Vulcan toddler or kindergartener acts like since they can’t be reasoned with as well (can’t really meditate) + are babies and also brimming with near irrepressible violence/emotions.
Vulcan toddler is just quietly accompanying their parent along on an errand. They stop and point to a toy of some sort and ask politely if they can have it. Their parent explains that they have enough toys at home. The toddler immediately throws the tantrum of the century. Just turns into an absolute wild animal in their rage. Other Vulcans are just like “aaa I remember when my children were that age” but any aliens around are like “oh my god is that thing OK??” I imagine even older Vulcan children would have issues with emotional control given that they’re also children! Though they’d of course know they needed to control themselves and behave...sometimes you just slip up. Vulcan children are playing together harmoniously. Then one breaks the established rules of the game. “I made contact with your arm. You are now the chaser.” “You did not make contact with my arm. I dodged your attempt.” “You dodged unsuccessfully. I made contact with your arm.” “I did not.” “You are cheating.” “I believe you are the one cheating.” And an adult has to rush over as one pounces on the other and they both begin screaming and clawing at each other’s eyes. The rest of the children are watching with interest or perhaps grabbing implements to assist their friend.  Little lapses in emotional control would probably be common until they reached like....highschool age. I can imagine an eleven year old Vulcan hearing they can’t sleepover a friend’s home and immediately shattering a vase before apologizing and cleaning it up.  It also seems like bullying would be very prevalent on Vulcan. Spock is canonically bullied frequently and it seems natural that Violent, Extreme Emotions in teenagers would lead to that kind of behavior which isn’t outwardly unacceptable (like crying, laughing, etc) but still satisfies an illogical desire towards cruelty and establishing dominance.  Vulcans schools probably have so many ‘Bullying Is Illogical’ seminars that do nothing and everyone makes fun of behind their teacher’s backs. Two Vulcan teenagers bullying each other, trying to see who has the more emotional reaction. If you cry or get mad you lose. Only babies cry and get mad...seems pretty illogical(cringe).  Vulcans seem to be very focused on respectability so I’m sure that as bloodthirsty teens there would be a lot of accusations and rules...if you hang out with X then Z,H and Y won’t talk to you. If you apologize too soon then they might accuse you of behaving too emotionally and gossip about you...if you don’t apologize at all they might accuse you of behaving too emotionally and gossip about you. It’s very stressful. Tuvok also said when he was a teenager in that one flashback that he was ready to fight over the girl he had a crush on (saying he’d “issue a challenge” or something) so I’m implementing that into my personal understanding of Vulcans...like adults do NOT want these kids to fight but amongst other teens they’re like:  “Seynar is my boyfriend.” “I disagree. He sat next to me during meditation three times this week.” “Only because I was absent.” “Then he is fickle and will be mine soon enough.” And then they challenge one another to a secret duel after school. Dueling to the death is very cool and grownup v_v (teens rarely die from such duels though bc either the other teen stops or someone told an adult). It makes sense to me that teenagers with violent urges would fight one another in a way that they consider acceptably adult. (mimicking the marriage ritual thing or even pon farr...romantic and cool.) Imagine being a teen Vulcan and your crush starts hinting that they have another person who might be interested in them....hmmm.....and you know you’re gonna have to duel for them or lose em. Such is life. Vulcan teens seem like they’d either date a lot (emotional whims) very non seriously (because they’re all betrothed) or date not at all because they’re gonna get married to their betrothed anyway. Loving someone other than your fated match is probably a pretty big trope in Vulcan romance stories...or maybe the opposite? Like someone bad tries to steal your heart but you remain resolute and return to your fated match as is logical. Anyway all this to say that I think Vulcan children and emotional control is something that’s fun to think about. Especially regarding how Vulcan children would act around adults vs other children. Vulcan child to adult: I will do my best to get along with my sibling. (2 seconds later once mother has left)  Vulcan child: You may play with the red toy. If you play with the blue toy I will harm you. Bodily. Meanwhile their older sibling is rolling their eyes like ugh....threatening violence is for babies....now to prepare for my logical and very adult duel for the love of my life whom I have known for three months. v_v
#vulcans#my writing#this is just stream of consciousness thoughts though#I just think Vulcan children should behave differently than adults...brains not done cooking yet and mastery of emotions is not complete#vulcan children being almost entirely self interested until a certain age#at which point they become very outward-facing...trying to please others around them and be liked/respected by their peers..trying to fit in#and then as adults they're able to strike a balance between knowing oneself and being respected by others#Vulcan teen frantically trying to decide if it's more logical to obey their parents wishes that they not go out to a party#or to go to the party which T'Yana said EVERYONE was going to be at....#since T'Pol says that Vulcans were (pre-reform) in factions I think that'd carry into their modern emotions...#is it more logical to be loyal to the familial 'faction' or the friendship one?#Meanwhile their baby sibling is screaming and banging their fists against the door because they WANNA! COME! IN! LET ! THEM! IN! (No.)#eeeeveryone thinks babysitting a Vulcan child will be SO easy until they threaten to rend your flesh from bone then set the house ablaze#because you wouldn't let them stay up five more minutes#star trek#I think Vulcans should be a little fucked up and wild but want that to NEVER EVER get out#I hope this makes sense v_v#how vulcan children act around peers vs adults vs alien adults etc should be different#hehe I also think as small children they'd just call anything they personally don't wanna do 'illogical' and their parents have to sigh and#teach them how to separate 'what is logical' from 'what I want to do'

This actually deserves its own post, so I'm going to say it again
A constitutional convention is a TERRIBLE IDEA.
I can't stress this enough. Think of every politician you know. Not just the one or two you like. Not just Donald Trump and the Republicans who backed him (and mostly flip flopped on that backing depending on what they thought would give them the best chance of being reelected), not just DeSantis, but all of them. Would you trust AOC to rewrite the constitution? Because you bet your ass the Democrats will be taking her input, if not actively having her write her version to put up for a vote. Even when it gets rejected, some of what she writes will make it in when the Republicans inevitably cave on important stances in the interest of another mostly one sided "compromise". Don't believe me? Look how many traitors are supporting the gun control lite that's currently going through congress.
Would you trust Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell to stand up for the principals of limited government and personal freedom? Would you trust the people voting on any new constitution to even read it, let alone understand what it is they're voting for? Would you trust the voting machines to properly tally ratification votes? Would you trust groups like BLM and Everytown for Gun Safety to have input? Would you trust politicians with ties to China, Soros, and the WEF to put the interests of the country ahead of global interests? Would you trust the media to accurately report on what's in each draft of the new constitution? Would you trust Google and Facebook to not censor the drafts that get put online? Would you trust any of these people or groups with your rights?
Think of everyone you talk to online. Think of your friends and family. Think of your coworkers. Would you want them rewriting the constitution? Would you trust them with your rights?
If the answer to a single one of these questions isn't an emphatic "hell yes!" then you can't support a constitutional convention. Rewriting the constitution now would be a disaster. We would lose more than we gain, if we even gain anything. The country is way too big for a consensus. Any document will be a mess of conflicting interests all trying to get their agendas passed. Our rights will be, at best, a distant 10th or 11th place in the drafting of a new constitution. At worst, they won't even be considered. Our politicians don't study the classic Greek and Roman philosophers. They don't have their morals informed by religion or family or study of history. The only philosophy they read are Marks and Engels, Osteen and Coulter, Vice and TMZ. The only morals they have are informed in most cases by decades in Washington. There is no one alive right now who I would trust in rewriting the constitution. Not even myself. As a society, we aren't equipped for it, morally or emotionally. Whatever fantasy you have of rewriting the constitution to be everything you want it to be will never come true. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Anyone who tries is either incredibly stupid, or lying to you. Don't be a fool. Don't let the enemies of this country and our constitution rewrite the very foundation of our laws.
