Ok wait I’m not done actually. This post has given me brain rot so bad I’ve been staring at it for like days weeks hours years, so bare with me.
Just thinking: Lily Evan’s is the second daughter of the king and queen, and as the second daughter it’s her duty to marry outside of the kingdom to build strong allies. The obvious choice of course is James potter, the neighboring kingdoms sole heir and most powerful ally. Lily and James are both quiet close actually and all things considered, there are worse options (i.e. the third son mulciber in another kingdom) so to solidify the alliance the Evan’s send Lily across the oceans with their trusted guards. One being Dorcas, who is pulling a mulan and has been pretending to be a man for the past 3 years in order to join the knights and fight. Dorcas tries to keep an appropriate distance from Lily as a knight, but Lily is in a sort of melancholy muse where she kind of looks out over the water and without looking at Dorcas goes “have you ever felt like you’re not really a person, but just a puppet who lets everyone pull the strings? I feel like I have no control, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried to take it either.” And Dorcas kind of just lets that sit with them. Then one night their ship wrecks (ofc like all good stories) and the two of them are the only survivors/only ones on the same part of the land. Just thinking about them having to navigate the land and grow closer and Lily feeling conflicted because while she’s never had any loyalty to marrying James and knows neither of them care about the alliance aside from placating their parents, she does feel conflicted because she was under the impression she only liked woman? And this is a man? So she’s going through a crisis coming to terms with being bisexual when finally after some big thing, she finds out Dorcas is a woman, and she’s angry and Dorcas thinks it’s bc she was lying and committing a crime technically punishable by death, but Lily is mad because she made her think she was attracted to men😭 any ways yeah so just them falling in love and Dorcas protecting Lily and !!!!
Also James pov where it’s him losing his goddamn mind because Lily is like his best friend and he loves her so so much and when the news of the wreck reached him he was like “yeah no she’s still alive nothing could kill Lily Evans, we need to go find her” and everyone keeps telling him there were no survivors but he’s like I don’t give a fuck, she’s alive. So then with the help of Lady Walburga’s son and his best friend Sirius, he’s able to sneak out one night pretending to be a commoner, but he runs into regulus and somehow they’re forced to travel together (reg probably said smth like “if you don’t take me with you I’ll to straight to your very worried parents and tell them you’re putting yourself in danger without any guards to go look for Lily alone” and James is like FUCK fine you can come, just don’t say I didn’t try). So the two of them traveling together, reg trying to get away from his family, James searching for Lily, and falling in love at the same time as Lily and Dorcas <3 gays all around
And just for some wolfstar bc I can’t function without them: Sirius being left to kind of mediate the potters and be like “it’s ok I’m sure James is fine, he’s smart it’s ok we’ll find him” while hiding the fact that he snuck James out, and he meets a stable boy (OFC BC I LOVE THIS TROPE YOY CAN RIP IT FROM MY DEAD HANDS) and he’s like instantly GONE. Remus being a stable boy and meeting the charming, beautiful Lords son and being like “yeah fuxk you and the monarchy, you’re probably an asshole who wipes his ass with gold leaf” and Sirius is like *heart eyes, aWOOga* “my family and the inherent inequality of the monarchy again😍” and they fall in love <3

Bad Batch Preference: How you meet and grow closer together
A/N: I hope people enjoy this and I guess I am back on here. Hello people who still follow me!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sergeant Hunter: You were surprisingly a Jedi and not just any Jedi, you were Anakin Skywalker's twin sister. Being the sister of that knucklehead wasn’t easy but if you managed him you could manage everything. Hunter and you met through Cody as the Bad Batch often reports to him and on one of their mission debriefings you walked into the room in full Jedi attire, beaten up from the battle you just came back with a grin on your face. Hunter felt like his heart stopped as your two gazes met and he knew right then and there he wanted to be with you.
For you it wasn’t any different. When you looked into his eyes you immediately felt a connection to him you couldn’t describe even if you tried. Something drew you to him and it made your heart skip a beat. At first you didn’t know if it was the force playing tricks on you or not. And to be honest the face tattoo he had was something that intrigues you and added something to the attraction you felt towards him and you were sure to ask him why he got it.
You two got to know each other when you requested their help on a mission on gathering some intel about something the sepratist were planning. The mission went exceptionally well and you not only grew closer with Hunter but the rest of the Bad Batch as well. You liked them a lot and you felt like they felt the same. It didn’t take long for you to decide that joining them wouldn’t be so bad and you worked better with them than any other troop so it was decided.
Being with them brought something new and exciting to your life and every day you learned more about them and how to maneuver the galaxy than you ever did with the Order. Of course you made sure to learn as much about the sergeant as possible.
Crosshair: The last mission of the Bad Batch went, nicely said, horrible leaving all of them with injuries so it was decided that they would get a medic assigned to them. Neither Crosshair nor the others wanted a reg among them and protested until the supervisor caved in and decided to assign one of the voluntary medics to them. Then in came you, a sunshine in person smiling brightly at all of them introducing yourself as their new medic.
Crosshair absolutely hated you in the beginning, yes you were better than a reg, but he despised your upbeat and innocent attitude from day one. You knew that he disliked you, he made it very clear by telling you to your face, but that didn’t stop you from being nice to him and getting feelings for the sharpshooter.
It took over six months and a reveal about your past during one intense mission that he started to see what was behind your facade and understand you. You all were on a mission to free a Jedi General that was captured a few weeks prior and the planet it brought you to was your old home planet. You begged Hunter to let you stay on the ship for this one and he was ready to leave you there until Crosshair interfered with one of his snarky comments that made your walls come crashing down.
“Excuse me that I do not want to run the risk of seeing my kriffin abusive family again, Crosshair! I spent years trying to get away and I am not about to lose all that kriffin progress because of you asshole!”
None of them has seen you in any shape, way or form angry and you screaming at Crosshair, seething with anger even made him shut up. In the end you stayed on the ship until they came back with the General. It wasn’t until that night that Crosshair came to you and apologized, actually apologized for once, and you two talked it out, paving the way for a future where you two would get along in more ways than you’d expect.
Tech: You two first met through a forum where things about technics and new inventions got discussed. One of your comments caught his eyes because you explained the flaws a new X-Wing model had and how it could be easily fixed. Tech was impressed with your statement and sent you a private message in the forum, starting a discussion between the two of you that lasted for three days. You immediately became friends and chatted every day.
The first time you two met in person was because threats were made against your father, Senator Bail Organa, and because you always tagged along with him he wanted to request protection from the Jedis. You knew that that was your only change and so you told him about how the Bad Batch were the best around and with a bit of prodding, begging and some luck they were assigned to your and your fathers protection.
They protected you for the next three weeks and it was the best three weeks of your life. You spent every single second you could with Tech, getting to know him and ranting about everything that came to your minds. It was a bliss and even though Tech was a bit insecure at first about you being a princess it didn’t hinder the both of you to start a relationship.
Wrecker: Being one of the best inventors and mechanics in the galaxy had its perks but also its downsides, one of them being that when the war came the Republic wanted you in their ranks. They were persistent and the only reason you said yes was so they left you alone, it worked in some ways at least.
You met Wrecker after he and the others came back from a mission where they barely escaped which left the Havoc Marauder half destroyed. You went by them without paying them much mind besides the half giant that was Wrecker which caught your eyes for a moment. Your heart ached seeing the modified omicron-class attack shuttles so ruined and you immediately went to work on it.
It took Wrecker a long time, and some nudges from his brothers, to muster up the courage to talk to you because of your cold and distant behaviour towards them when they first met you, but when he finally did he was pleasantly surprised. You were kind and soft to him and answered every question he asked you. Something about how Wrecker talked to you and how nervous he was in the beginning made your heart immediately melt for him.
Throughout the whole repair process Wrecker would be glued to your side, talking to you about some of the missions they had and crazy stuff that happened. He would also listen to your rambles about your newest inventions and whatnot. When the ship was finally repaired and they left again Wrecker promised to comm you every day which he kept, even if they were in the middle of a battle. It was one of the cutest things ever and it was one thing you loved about him.
All Laid Bare (Crosshair x Reader)
Summary: Mechanic!reader is asked to accompany the bad batch on a mission. Reader’s been on a few dates w Crosshair, but we get a lil bit more ~emotional intimacy~ in this mission in addition to some physical intimacy. You can read this as a continuation of the Got Our Wires Crossed/Shot in the Dark universe, or as a stand-alone!!
Rating: Everyone
Word Count: 2k
Warnings: Crosshair’s a lil insecure, mentions of the regs being assholes, a few kithes
Author’s Note: I actually had a tricky time writing this on e, but I hope the result is worth it!! Enjoy!! Thanks to @porgnugget for requesting this!!
***
“Let me get this straight, you want me to what?”
Hunter grinned slightly at your bewilderment.
“We want you to come with us. We need a mechanic, and you’re the best one here. All you need to do is repair the ship once it lands—the entrance atmosphere is pretty caustic, and according to Tech’s calculations, we won’t be able to make the hyperspace jump back without some pretty significant repairs. You in?”
Hunter stared you down expectantly.
Were you even allowed to say no? Hunter was your commanding officer, and you didn’t usually have much of a choice when it came to direct orders. You shook your head with exasperation—you were pretty sure this was at least three different kinds of illegal. This mission was light years above your clearance level, you were about to be a civilian in a war zone, and last time you checked, targeting an outpost of the technically neutral banking clan was a war crime.
You pointed all of this out to Hunter, who merely replied with, “All in a typical mission, right boys?”
Wrecker gave a grunt of assent from his seat on the Havoc Marauder. Your eyes flicked over to Tech and Crosshair, the former inspecting your work on the control panel and the latter trying his very best to look preoccupied. You caught his eye as he attempted to sneak a glance at you. Your lips tilted into a half smile and his features softened a bit in response.
“Tech—you said the atmosphere’s gonna damage the ship? There’s no way for you to fix it yourselves? You can comm me from the base and I can walk you through it,”.
Tech looked up from his datapad.
“The comms’ll be down. The entrance atmosphere of this moon resembles an asteroid field—floating debris makes the signal intermittent at best. We’re guaranteed to take at least a few hits to the Marauder while entering, and I can’t do all the repair work alone,”.
You nodded, resigning yourself to your fate. They’re lucky you love them. “I’m in. What’s the plan again?”
***
Hunter thought he had prepared everything down to the tiniest detail. Tech had estimated the ship damage and repair time, Crosshair had stocked the arsenal, and Wrecker had ensured they had enough explosives to blow the outpost sky high. It was droid-manned, so there were no qualms about civvie casualties, either. The mission was simple—get in, secure the Separatist account codes, and destroy the evidence. These codes were necessary for the Republic’s effort to implant a digital siege on Separatist resources. Hunter was sure that after his team’s extensive planning, the mission would go off without a hitch—that is, until his di’kut of a brother ended up a few minutes away from contracting heat stroke.
“Cross, take your damn armor off before you pass out,” Hunter grumbled. Repairs were projected to take at least another hour, and the jungle planet’s climate was dangerously hot and humid. The rest of his brothers had shed their armor hours ago, with Wrecker using his vibroknife to shear off the sleeves of his blacks. How exactly he planned to reattach them once he redonned his armor was another story.
Crosshair didn’t bother to respond, huffing from his seat against the hull and drumming his fingertips across his helmet in his lap. He spared a glance at you, studying the focus in your gaze as you mended the ship.
You looked up from the engine reactor—the ship had taken a hit right to the engine room from a massive chunk of debris. The planet’s heat was all-consuming and you made a note to work quickly, although you needed to wait a minimum of an hour for the hull sealant to set. You took inventory of the group—their armor decorated the ship in piles, and they had consumed nearly half the water supply they had brought with. You noticed that Crosshair still wore his plastoid. That could not be comfortable—plastoid tended to trap warmth exceptionally well, creating a heating system that worked wonders for the cold but turned stifling in the heat. He looked ill. His face was pallid, and sweat rolled along his cheekbones in large droplets. Your hands stilled, your work forgotten.
“Cross, you’re sweating,”. Your brows furrowed in concern.
“It’s a jungle,” Crosshair replied sarcastically.
“Take the plastoid off, might help,” You grumbled, preparing to turn back to your work. If he was still able to snark, he couldn’t be too far gone.
Wrecker jumped in.
“Yeah, Cross, take the armor off,”. Realization flooded Wrecker’s face “Ah, or are you all shy because—”
Hunter gave Wrecker a sharp nudge, cutting him off with an intense look. He then caught your eye, and nodded towards the exit. You raised an eyebrow, setting down your tools and rising from your seated position.
“Tech, can you finish up that last hull section? I need some fresh air,”.
Tech nodded in assent as you followed Hunter out of the Marauder. You began your inquisition as soon as the two of you were out the door.
“Cross looks like he’s about to keel over. It’s hot as hell—why does he still have his armor on? Is something wrong?” You questioned. You cocked your head, crossing your arms over your chest.
Hunter sighed, shaking his head.
“Have you two…”
“Have we what?” You searched Hunter’s face, confused.
Hunter cleared his throat.
“Have you seen him without the armor, yet?”
You huffed, your cheeks growing warm.
“No, I haven’t, but I don’t understand why that would be important now,”.
Hunter shifted his weight to his other hip, tapping nervously on his vambrace.
“I know my brother, and, uh, he had it rough growing up. We all did, but him especially. The regs were…”
Hunter trailed off, and you furrowed your brows.
“The regs were…” You prompted.
Hunter shook his head, seemingly brushing away old memories.
“To cut a long story short, Cross was always skinnier than the others. They gave him shit for it, we dished it back, but it was tough for him. The armor…evened the playing field, I guess? He’s always been fine around us, but with you…” He trailed off yet again.
Oh. Oh.
You nodded in understanding. If it weren’t for the sincerity in Hunter’s tone, you’d have half a mind to believe he was joking—Crosshair was confident, cocky at times. It was unlike him to display anything other than the silent bravado you had come to know and trust. You sighed.
“I’ll talk to him—it’s gonna be an hour or so until the hull sealant is fully dry. Thank you, Hunter,”.
Hunter furrowed his brow—his brother wasn’t typically one for conversation, but he figured it wasn’t his place to say much more. Hunter nodded sharply, and you followed him back into the Marauder.
Tech glanced up from his datapad.
“Sealant’s been applied. We’ll be ready to move out in an hour”
You nodded. Crosshair rose from his seat as you settled against the Havoc Marauder’s undamaged wall. He made his way to the door.
“Where are you going?” Wrecker grumbled.
“Out,” Crosshair replied, not even bothering to look back.
You exchanged a look with Hunter, rising from your seat. He shook his head slightly. You settled back against the wall, resting your head against the durasteel and closing your eyes.
***
Thirty minutes later, and Crosshair was nowhere to be found. Your brow furrowed—what if he had gotten into trouble? His brothers didn’t seem particularly concerned, but then again, they all had weapons to clean and mission tactics to mull over. You were stuck with only your mind and its waterfall of thoughts.
“I’m gonna go look for Cross. Be back soon,”.
Hunter nodded in response to your statement, and with his approval, you headed out the door.
Without the ship’s coolant system, the planet’s humidity quickly overwhelmed you. You yanked your arms out of the sleeves of your flightsuit, tying them around your waist. You swept a stray hair from your forehead—where was he? You decided to circle the clearing you had landed in before attempting to brave the tall trees and thick vegetation, both of which could be home to creatures you dared not disturb.
You didn’t have to walk far to find the sniper—he had settled against the other side of the Marauder’s external hull, his plastoid as well as the top half of his blacks in a pile at his feet. Your eyes glanced over his skin, tanned and scarred from battle. His shoulders flexed as he scrubbed the barrel of his rifle. Your face flushed.
“Crosshair?”
He looked up from his rifle sharply. You took a step back, not wanting to alarm him. His features relaxed slightly once he realized it was, in fact, you and not some jungle beast. The state of relaxation didn’t last long.
Crosshair glanced at the pile of armor at his feet and then back to you. You smiled gently—was that pity in your expression? He shrugged in on himself.
“Need something?” He grumbled. He reached for his blacks, pulling them over his head.
You watched as he yanked the fabric over his torso, your eyes training in on the sliver of scarred skin that peeked out from the hem of his top. Crosshair stared at you expectantly. You blinked.
“Just wanted to check on you,” you answered honestly. “I was worried you had keeled over in the bushes or something,”. You lightened your tone, hoping to lighten the mood as well.
“Consider me checked on,” Crosshair replied flippantly, looking back down at the rifle in his hands before fiddling with the sights. He had put up his walls again.
You sighed and walked over to where he was seated against the Marauder. You slid down the durasteel until you had settled yourself a foot or so away from Crosshair’s position. You looked out at the jungle for a moment before turning to face the marksman.
He was a man of few words—you knew this. He wouldn’t be one for a long-winded, emotional conversation. You figured you might as well just spit it out.
“You know I think you’re attractive, right?”
Crosshair looked up from the rifle. His brow furrowed.
“I like you—all of you—if I didn’t, I don’t think…” you trailed off with a nervous laugh. Words failed you.
You searched his face. His features were inscrutable.
Should you speak again? You felt a need to fill the silence, but you worried your words were straining the tension rather than alleviating it.
Before you could utter another bumbling sentence, Crosshair lifted a hand from his rifle to your cheek, pressing a hasty kiss against your parted lips.
If his goal was to shut you up, he succeeded. You stared wide-eyed at the sniper, the beginnings of a grin tugging at the corners of your lips.
“Was that okay?”
You nodded. You pulled him back in with a smile.
You kissed him slowly this time, his lips surprisingly soft against yours. He hummed as your hand traveled upwards to stroke his jaw, your other remaining firmly fisted in his blacks. You brushed your lips against his once more before pulling away to press a series of kisses in a line from the corner of his mouth to below his ear.
“Thank you,” he murmured, tilting his chin upward with a sigh as he melted into your touch.
You broke away to meet his eyes, and allowed both your hands to slide down to rest at his chest.
He didn’t need to say any more.
He pulled you into one last kiss—one that made your spine tingle as his skilled fingers found their way to the nape of your neck. You made a mental note to explore more of this later. For now, you had a mission to complete. You rose from your seat, brushing off your legs.
“Sealant should be dry soon—we should get back,”.
Crosshair nodded in response.
You tossed a final glance over your shoulder as Crosshair followed you back to the ship, his silhouette highlighted by the setting jungle sun. He stood taller without the weight of his armor, you noticed. You smiled.
About crosshair. Again lol
Regardless of his scar not lining up with chip scar or the headaches or “soldiers follow orders” again. Or him without a chip being a liability to the empire. I just don’t buy his personality change in the end. I’m the pilot episode they hammered it over our heads it’s very unlike him to follow orders. He said himself “empire or republic, what’s the difference?” But now in the end he cares about the empire protecting the galaxy? Responds to hunter his choice is “soldiers follow orders”? Wtf, really? So he genuinely believes his only personality is being a soldier now? when it’s been established in both in cw and tbb that cf99, including crosshair only cared about completing the mission. I get that people change but not that abruptly especially if we are to believe techs “unyielding” description of him to be true. Echo is the one true soldier of the group. He keeps repeating to hunter “we are soldiers not smugglers”, “there is no other way than being soldiers” etc. but he is clearly loyal to the republic. And I never saw echo and crosshair to be similar in that
So yeah , I think it’s very out of character for crosshair to just see himself as soldier and being content with following order or being a pawn(which he must realize he is cause he’s not dumb) especially with his mega inflated sense of self importance. Just my two cents
Crosshair is a complicated character! There's a lot to discuss :D
That's a good point though. And yeah, as acknowledged the quick personality change could be chalked up to chip influence if it's still having some kind of impact... but if it's not, then what do we make of that?
Putting aside the "It's just bad writing" possibility, I think there's a key difference between not following orders and not being loyal to the organization giving those orders. They're not necessarily the same thing, though it's easy to lump the two together. Yeah, we see early on that the Bad Batch isn't known for doing things the "right" way. Rex and Jesse are pretty unsure about their methods when the Batch first shows up in TCW. In the pilot Tech has a line about how "We're more deviant than defective" emphasizing that they tend to do things differently. Crosshair's sudden willingness to follow orders to the letter, not just in spirit, is questioned during their time in the cell, etc. So yeah, they don't obey the rules, but I don't think that's because they're not loyal. They're not refusing orders because pff, screw the Republic/Empire, who cares about those guys. They're refusing orders because they recognize that their way of doing things—the unconventional methods that deviate from the standard clone playbook—is more likely to net them, and the Republic, a success. They seem to be against the Republic's rules because they want the Republic to succeed, recognizing that their way is the best way to get that. Wrecker takes great pride in their successful missions, keeping tally marks on their room's wall. Crosshair is constantly pointing out how the higher ups called them in because the Regs couldn't complete a mission, likewise emphasizing his pride in being needed. When Rex and Hunter finally start bonding, it's through Rex's decision to charge the droids head on, precisely like the Batch would, rather than following the "correct" strategy of carefully picking them off from the tree line. They bond over the understanding of, "Yes. This is the best way the Republic wins." Perhaps most significantly, the Batch was still willing to complete missions for the Empire up until they were ordered to kill civilians. Killing Jedi resulted in an acknowledgement of how messed up that was... but no solid intent to leave.
All of the above is important because it establishes the Batch's need to be loyal to something other than themselves. The kind of loyalty that is shown through intense, life-threatening acts of service. Hunter's line about them being loyal to each other rather than some Empire, while true, is a simplification. Their loyalty to the Republic and their loyalty to one another overlap in many, many significant ways, simply because the Batch was created for the Republic. They have literally spent their entire lives living, breathing, fighting, and almost dying for the Republic. Their core identities stem from the Republic's desires: skills they want them to cultivate and even personalities they want to foster, if Tech's theories are to be believed (that conversation with Wrecker in the mess hall). The loyalty the Batch feels, those bonds they formed over the years, stem entirely from completing missions for the Republic. Their love for one another is, at least at the start, a product of the Republic's desire for Good Soldiers. And yeah, they sometimes did things the Republic technically didn't like, but it was always in service of achieving the Republic's end goal, whatever that may have been. They were very good soldiers, just soldiers that understood the value of creative thinking. "You want me to reach this location? Of course! I'll reach it by cutting across the grass, despite you asking me to follow the path already laid out. But our goal and the Regs' goal is exactly the same: fulfill your mission. That's our purpose in this life."
And then the Republic became the Empire.
Every one of these characters has a need to serve some higher purpose, to complete missions for the benefit of another. Overlooking the very literal ways in which they may have been genetically predisposed towards this (like the chip), and the cultural brainwashing that went on the second they were born (this is your duty, this is your purpose, this is all you exist for), this is, simply put, all they've ever known. Though it's possible to walk away from that need, it's by no means easy. So what saves the majority of the Batch from falling into that "Republic, Empire, what's the difference?" thinking out of a need to serve someone?
Omega.
I think it's crucial that the second they abandon one mission—killing civilians for the Empire—there's already new mission waiting for them to focus on instead—rescue and protect Omega, indefinitely. That's Hunter's thinking. We're not going to do A, we're going do B instead. All they did was put that single-minded focus onto a new target, but the focus—the need—still exists. And we see that throughout the first season, where everything the Batch does is in service to Omega. Their life decisions revolve entirely around her, from very small things (here's your own room on the ship) to the much larger (we need to stay on the move to help you avoid bounty hunters, even if we may want to find someplace to stay). The purpose of a soldier has been mapped onto the purpose of a parent, with the new, ongoing goal being "Raise Child" as opposed to "Win War." Putting aside for the moment the fact that this is an action-adventure show and thus exciting plot has to happen, I think it's notable that no one suggests non-soldier-y things to help them make money. Tech isn't offering his intellect as an easy way to make credits, nor Wrecker his strength. No one is seriously thinking of a planet they could hide out on, even from bounty hunters, so as to raise Omega in peace. They are still, fundamentally, the people they were during the time of the Republic, people who need to fight for something. Literally fight. It's just now they're chaotically fulfilling missions for Cid so they can give Omega a halfway decent life, rather than chaotically fulfilling missions for a general so they can give the Republic a chance at winning the war.
Omega is the new focus, the new Republic stand-in, but what happens if she's not an option? (Would have been really interesting to see what the Batch did if she'd actually left with Cut.) Without the chip affecting his thoughts, I fully believe Crosshair would have left with the others. Why wouldn't he? That's his family and, per Hunter's orders, Omega is the new mission. But the chip ensured he missed that chance and by the time he came out of it (if he came out of it), it was too late. His squad was gone, they never came back, and Crosshair needs to find a new place in this galaxy, just like they did. Except his options are far more limited and suck a whole lot more. I can't recall anything that implies Crosshair thinks the Empire will save the galaxy, but he does think it's going to control it and he's looking for his own purpose in this new life. Why not find purpose in the winning side? He can serve the Empire just like they served the Republic. He can serve the Empire just like his squad now serves Omega. The need to belong somewhere, to have that larger goal, outweighs those pesky ethical issues, at least for now. Though to me the "Good soldiers follow orders" really, really still sounds like chip influence, it can also be read as a broader acknowledgment that yes, they are fundamentally soldiers and yes, they do need orders of one kind or another. They need that mission. That goal. That purpose. Someone who helps to guide them in this new, crazy galaxy. Yeah, they've always bent and gotten creative with the orders, but until 4/5ths of them left the Empire, they'd never ignored the orders as a whole. None of the Bad Batch went, "I'm not taking this mission because the Admiral was an asshole to us about it and I don't feel like it :/" They suck up all the hard parts—the awful treatment, the danger, the general difficulty—because they have a goal to fulfill. They live for having a goal, literally in the sense that this is what they were made for. The Bad Batch is still doing that with Cid, putting up with bad treatment, dangerous situations, and general difficulty because they have that larger goal of taking care of Omega. Crosshair missed out on that, so he latched onto the Empire instead. Which circles right back around to previous points that if the Batch had tried to rescue him and/or been more welcoming when offering his return, Crosshair likely would have joined in on the Omega mission too. It's the best new purpose for all of them.
Crosshair sees himself as a soldier because, right now, being a soldier of the Empire is the only way he can find the purpose and belonging that the rest of the Batch maintained with each other and Omega, back when he was left behind. No, he's not dumb, but the logistics of the situation outweigh his knowledge that things are far from perfect. Do we think the Batch doesn't also realize that Cid is continually taking advantage of them with 70/30 splits? Of course not. But they need a way to survive and, right now, this is it. Crosshair likewise recognizes that the Empire is treating him as a pawn—I think he was in denial prior to the bombing, but now he definitely knows—but what other option is there? Not his squad. As discussed, he feels strongly that he's no longer welcome with them, with good reason. The only other option is to go off on his own, something that's incredibly foreign to clones who were bred to serve that higher purpose alongside many, many brothers. Yes, we've seen one or two who manage that—like Cut—but they're the outliers. Rex found his new purpose fighting the Empire with Ahsoka. The Batch found their new purpose taking care of Omega with each other. Crosshair's new purpose is... nothing. Profiles in IMDb Greatness: Glenn Fleshler
Tumblr media
I love the Internet Movie Database. was that the big boy from Modern Family working the front desk at a hotel in Almost Famous? Sure was. As such I enjoy looking over random performer pages and arbitrarily judging the scope and quality of their careers to determine if they merit entry into my vaguely defined IMDb Hall of Fame. Today’s enshrinee: Glenn Fleshler
Tumblr media
Hello old friends, hope everyone is doing well during this pandemic and instead of protesting at state capitol buildings with the shittiest people alive you’re safe at home enjoying wholesome blog content. While riding out quarantine the mind has more time to wander and ponder the deeper mysteries, like what are the moral obligations a government has to keeping its population alive and in the nearly 50 years of HBO has there ever been a more vital figure in its programming than Glenn Fleshler over the past decade?
Much like Gus Frerotte appearing out of nowhere to be every team’s backup quarterback at some point in the last 20 years, Fleshler just strolls from one prestige television set to another covering the gamut from drama to horror to comedy. I considered writing this post months ago when I first realized we were dealing with Mr. HBO here but quarantine boredom was just the propellant needed to get this baby off the ground.
First Listed Role: While fans of the IMDb HOF may remember my affinity for these actors getting their starts in soap operas the true character actor spirit is captured from appearing in network crime dramas so of course Glenn Fleshler opening up with an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street which also featured friend of the HOF Jon Polito! The episode description is simply “The team investigate a woman who appears to be murdering her husbands for the insurance money” so I’ll assume they ripped the whole thing from the plot of Addams Family Values and Fleshler played Uncle Fester.
Newest Role: Of course after calling Fleshler Mr. HBO I’m immediately served up a role on Showtime’s Billions. I didn’t get into that show when it premiered since I don’t trust Showtime original programming anymore and when I tried to start it up a couple weeks ago I made it five minutes before realizing that a show about rich assholes talking about the stock market wasn’t what I was looking for in 2020. I’m sure it’s delightful.
CSI/Law & Order/NCIS Guest Spots: Three episodes of Law & Order and three more of SVU, six different characters. This is legendary stuff. Let’s go in chronological order where I play my favorite game of trying to guess who the character was in each episode.
Don Hamilton, 2/6/02 - A former aide for a state senator has turned up missing and it’s revealed that she was having an affair with the senator and was pregnant. My money’s on Fleshler as the murderous, fertile politician.
Dr. Noah Kamens, 11/1/02 - Yikes, child sex ring episode here. Fingers crossed that Fleshler was just appearing as a child psychologist and not as a predatory pediatrician but as we’ll visit later he can pull off menacingly creepy well.
Rick Kawalchuck, 4/20/05 - A porn star is murdered, safe to assume Fleshler is the corpse and this light-hearted episode is filled with wisecracks about how with his rigor mortis they won’t be able to close the coffin.
Jimmy Curren, 12/3/08 - A man from upstate New York is found dead in Chinatown, a realistic crime based on my knowledge of midupstate New Yorkers and their appreciation of a good Chinese buffet. This crime leads all the way to the governor’s office and since Jimmy doesn’t sound gubernatorial I’ll guess Fleshler is an adviser who kills the victim over the last potsticker.
Corrections Officer Kravitz, 10/7/09 - This game isn’t fun if you do all the work for me, character name.
Phillip Altshuler, 12/6/17 - A true pro still doing these gigs when at this point he’d been in some truly great TV. this episode is about the rape of a social media star so he’s the venture capitalist funding the app and trying to keep the story under wraps.
One of these days I really should watch an episode of Law & Order.
Hall of Fame Ballot Submissions: Just from the HBO division we got Sex and the City (he looks like Charlotte’s type based on the schlubby lawyer she ends up marrying down the stretch), Boardwalk Empire (not the best show but I did love him as George Remus who always referred to himself as “Remus”), True Detective (hope everyone’s working from home in case remembering the “Making flowers” scene gets you understandably horny), The Knick (technically Cinemax but I always thought they were owned by the same crew, if not when a show has a guy taking a shot of cocaine to the dick it gets in here), The Night Of (kind of became a mess at the end and there entirely too much John Turturro foot picking but the pilot was great), Barry (fantastic show, Fleshler should do more comedy) and then he turned up in the best episode of the incredible Watchmen season.
What a run, when Glenn Fleshler passes on down the road I hope this kicks off his funeral.
Miscellaneous Credits: I didn’t think Joker in any way deserved a Best Picture nomination and the conversation around it was embarrassing all around since in the end it was a mostly entertaining Taxi Driver ripoff but hey, Glenn Fleshler can say he was in award nominated motion picture.
Highest Rated IMDb Entry: Kinda surprised that the True Detective finale landed here since I remember there being disappointment with it even though I thought it and that whole season were fantastic (his relative/ladyfriend Ann Dowd would be a good one to cover in the next post so keep that in mind for the next pandemic) but here it is at a robust 9.6. Fleshler is the right kind of unnerving after a season of buildup to who the killer was. I can see how a fella like that would catch on in multiple Law & Orders universes even if he’s appeared enough times for people to question why everyone in New York City looks like Glenn Fleshler.
Lowest Rated IMDb Entry: A 2016 film called The Rendezvous where Fleshler’s the only name I recognize on the cast list. Let’s learn about this movie together, shall we.
Oof, I was rooting for armageddon to come take me less than a minute in to that. My only intrigue in diving in further is to see if the “we work for a higher power” sticks with that Steel Magnolias accent all throughout the movie. And the quips, my god the quips. The “you think?” line is what happens when Marvel movies are oversold for their witty banter, everyone wants a taste of jokes they don’t have to work on.
IMDb Fun Fact: The only three I had to choose from
Off-Broadway, he has appeared in such plays as Measure for Measure and Pericles, Prince of Tyre.
Fleshler studied acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Performing Arts, from which he has an MFA.
Fleshler's Broadway credits include Death of a Salesman, Guys and Dolls, Arcadia and The Merchant of Venice.
Neat.
