Volstagg eyed Sutton curiously. 

“Now which kingdom do you represent?” Sutton was told what to say about this. 

“I’m His Majesty’s guest, of Andolasia.” 

A few new pairs of eyes shifted to study her; Volstagg’s brows and lips pulled down as he nodded.

“Well, that’s quite an honor then. Are you from a house I’d have heard of?”

Sutton shifted in her seat and picked at her food. She didn’t remember if there was a right answer for this one.

“Um. No. It’s just me.” 

Volstagg seemed to find this even more intriguing. The other eyes in the room stared more openly.  

“Interesting,” Volstagg commented. 

He didn’t seem to know quite what to do with her situation, and Sutton wasn’t quite sure what was entirely wrong with it. Perhaps he wasn’t as easy going as he appeared, and was insulted to be speaking with someone of lower standing, given she didn’t have a name to bolster her. 

But this was a fairy tale world, not some gritty fantasy world. No one in the castle, even the people she knew had more power and standing than her, treated her poorly or as lesser.

Was hospitality just an Andolasia thing? Sutton did Volstagg a favor and didn’t comment that ‘interesting’ didn’t feel like a very diplomatic response to your host’s guest.

It left me speechless for awhile but I love it.

Hi! I was actually made aware of this little factoid back in 2019 or so, and I actually have a two-part essay planned around it that I'm planning on posting as part of the GVGP (though I'm thinking of expediting part 1, which goes into further detail about what I'm going to cover here). I remember being shocked about Cornwall's French bio, but I eventually rationalized that the last sentence was probably something left over from an earlier version of the neighborhood (and wasn't removed from the French localization for some reason).

Basically, somewhere along the way, I figured that Hermia's parents were switched from Regan and Cornwall to Cordelia and Caliban. Tbh, I'm not exactly sure why the switch happened, mostly because Cornwall and Regan fit better as Hermia's parents from a Shakespeare perspective. For one thing, those two being Hermia's parents better mirrors both Hermia's relationship with her dad in AMSND, along with Rosaline supposedly being Juliet's cousin in Romeo and Juliet. If I had to guess, the switch might have been so that she could have served as Juliette's confidant a la the nurse in Romeo and Juliet, but I can't be completely sure.

Beyond the Shakespeare implications, there are also some gameplay tidbits that seem to support this switch. First, there's Consort's memories, which state that Hermia was born before Juliette. This contradicts their age bars, where Juliette is the older one of the two. Given how aging works in TS2, the only way I could logically explain this discrepancy would be if Hermia grew up in a separate household from Juliette (this also explains why Miranda is listed as being born before Tybalt in Consort's memories, despite her being younger than Hermia when it comes to their age bars).

Another gameplay feature that ties into the Shakespeare inspiration also has to do with Hermia's relationships with Regan and Cornwall, both of which start in the negatives. While I can't say for sure how she felt about Cordelia and Caliban, the game seems to hint that their deaths were the catalyst for Hermia growing up badly, so I would assume that her relationship with them was on the cordial side.

As a compromise for the whole thing, I have a multitude of headcanons regarding Hermia's relationships with both Cornwall and Regan, but that might go into trigger warning territory for some people, so I probably won't elaborate here (my playthroughs offer some explanation, but don't go into the whole story). Let's just say that some things happened that led to both Cornwall and Regan distancing themselves from Hermia while she was younger, and that the latter has resented them ever since.

“I’m gonna kill her,” Kira growls, glaring across the cafeteria where Shannon sits with her friends, laughing loudly. Probably still gloating about the word painted across Kira’s locker, or maybe the smudged paint on Kira’s shirt that her mother is going to kill her for getting on a good shirt instead of a painting one. Yeah, that’s definitely grounds for homicide.

“Off school property,” Erin drones for probably the thirtieth time today.

“‘Off school property,’” Kira mimics, her voice high and nasally. Erin narrows her eyes at her, mouth opening to speak, but she barrels on before the other girl has a chance. “She didn’t write queer off school property, so I should be able to break her face on school property.”

“Do it!” Michelle exclaims, eyes lighting up at the same time Clare snaps, “No! Graffiti is one thing, fighting will definitely get you expelled! Do you want to get expelled?”

Kira pauses, mulling over the idea. “I would have more time to paint.”

“No, you’d just be sent somewhere else without us and everyone there would be scared of you or hate you and you’d be all alone, bored, and bitchy again.”

“How do you know everyone would hate me?” Kira snaps, crossing her arms over her chest and glowering at her. 

Clare pauses, mouth gaping like a fish. Kira can practically see the gears turning in her head as she searches for the best way not to offend her. Michelle, on the other hand, doesn’t care as much as she says, “Because you’re always bitchy.”

“Oh, fuck off,” Kira snaps, glaring at her. “That’s it, I’m beating her up on school grounds just to get away from you assholes.” She stands up, getting ready to stomp towards Shannon when Orla grabs her and gently pulls her into a headlock. Kira could easily get out of it with a well-placed boob shot, but honestly, she’s kind of impressed Orla had the balls to do it. So instead she squacks, “What the actual fuck is wrong with you?”

“Ya can’t get yourself expelled if you dump paint in her shite then beat her up off school property.”

Kira mulls over the idea. Oh, she could pour paint in her backpack, make her have to buy all new supplies… Hell yeah, Orla’s an evil genius.

“Orla, you’re my new ideas person. Now let me go, we’ve got to figure out how to get that backpack.”

Would you recommend fe3h to someone who is bad at games and knows nothing about fire emblem? I recently bought a switch and I'm looking for games and I know you're a fan

I went back and forth on how to answer this, but I'll go ahead and say: yes! I would recommend Fire Emblem: Three Houses as a good onboard to the series, but with a pretty large *.

Mechanically, it's much more forgiving and less punishing then it's predecessors. You can turn perma death off, and pretty early on you'll unlock the ability to roll back turns in case you make mistakes. Story wise it's also an independent setting and totally new characters from any previous Fire Emblem game. I also really really enjoy the story: if your willing to dig into it, its got a lot of depth and nuance, with characters struggling to do their best while working from incomplete information and radically different visions of the future.

Which is also where the asterisk comes in. I played all three routes + The DLC, totaling around 230 hours. A lot of that was repeat content, since the first half of the game is largely the same regardless of which route you pick (though with several large key differences). I personally don't mind this at all, and enjoyed seeing each 'side' of the story, and having both the characters and conflict fleshed out, but I know some folks found it repetitive and only played one route: which is where a lot of the Fandom Discourse comes from.

The point of Three House is that it's ultimately a tragedy. No one is really 'in the right'. The game presents three flawed characters in Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude, all of whom are struggling to make a broken world better, and asks you to to choose between their visions of the future, good and ill alike. But the game also asks a pretty hefty time investment to be able to fully understand here each is coming from, and why they do what they do.

You can absolutely play just one route and have a satisfying experience: but the true meat of the game lays beyond that. It's one of those games where you get out what you put in. (Also it's fairly light on anime silliness, especially compared to the new Fire Emblem out next year, which is a big pro in my book.)

So yeah, again: I recommend Three Houses very much. But with a firm *.

Also Linhardt is the best husbando, send tumble.
