I feel like today's generation, and this platform especially, is greatly missing out on the musical genius of Regina Spektor

my current playlist WIP is ‘the skylark/the sparrow’ because clearly tristian (pathfinder kingmaker) and emilio sandoz (the sparrow) are two characters from WILDLY different genres and pieces of media who innately go together and are flipsides of the same coin and i will not change my mind on this
it’s like. it’s about the spiritual desolation/consolation. it’s about holy darkness/the dark night of the soul. it’s having healing merciful light in one hand and the flaming sword of justice in the other. it’s about losing your connection to the divine because of your own pride in your service and faith and ideals but also ultimately maybe your cowardice. it’s feeling responsible for so many deaths, whether that’s in fact true or not. it’s about your relationship with god and you devotion being inextricably linked to the language and metaphor of romance, for better or for worse, esp wrt love freely given vs. love that is compelled, or innately hardwired in, and thus inescapable. it’s about physical torture and its permanent aftereffects as a means of divine punishment (or is it divine grace?). it’s about BIRD IMAGERY

when i was like 7 my parents got a cd of sigh no more by mumford and sons and i vividly remember making them play ‘the cave’ over and over while i clutched the lyric booklet and reread it in time with the audio and it was the first song that i fully memorized the lyrics of
i think that's beautiful. the music your parents listen to always has that sort of effect i think

I only know Blue Lips by Regina (because of homestuck) what else should I listen to, get me into Regina Spektor
Blue Lips was my first Regina song too! Way back in the Warrior cats YouTube days... 2010ish.
That's on her album Far - if you like the big conceptual aspect of Blue Lips, a lot of other songs on this album are like that. Machine & Genius Next Door in particular have a lotta world-building going on.
I mostly listen to her album Begin to Hope... It's a bit more upbeat sound-wise than Far. Samson is a big classic Regina song.
Personal favs are Hotel Song, Summer In The City, That Time, Dance Anthem of the 80s, & Folding Chair
Be aware she makes weird noises a lot... Like a dolphin or monkey or something. Some ppl are super off-put by that lol. I appreciate that she plays with vocals so much!

Happy one decade anniversary to my one and only New Years tradition, picking my last song of the year to say thank you goodbye to the old and my first song of the year as a prayer for what I want for the new
