Dear Sirius Orion Black III
As the family of Regulus Arcturus Black II, we regret to inform you of his untimely death. Today at 11:47, we got a letter from Narcissa Malfoy. She said his name on the tapestry was replaced with a skull, marking him dead.
We have started to conduct an investigation into his death. Updates will be sent monthly if you choose. I am sorry for your loss and wish you the best.
Frank Longbottom, Sr. Auror
Sirius couldn't breathe after he finished reading.
Somewhere in France, Regulus felt uneasy about something. But he did not know why.

Remus: How can we know he’s not with the dark lord?
James: He isn’t.
Sirius: Is he on our side?
James: No.
Sirius: That’s not possible, if he’s not on our side then he’s sided with the dark lord.
James: He hasn’t.
Regulus: I’m on my own side.
Remus: Your own side.
Regulus: That’s what I said Lupin, do try to keep up.
James: Reg.
Sirius: He’s probably a damned spy!
Regulus: Do refrain from speaking about me as if I am not here.
James: I trust him. Even if you don’t can you at least trust me?
Sirius: Fine but remember that I was against this when he betrays you.
James: Thanks Pads. Moony?
Remus: I trust you Prongs.

Snape never became a Potions professor because after the war (after everyone lived because my mental health is really poor and i need them to be happy) Regulus accepted the job after Slughorn retired.
He was one of the favourite teachers even if he didn't commend everyone for every little thing. Regulus was quite cold, but he was fair and gave congratulations when they were deserved and had an ear to listen for anyone who need it.
"Have you seen that Professor Black never roll both of his sleves?" asked Ron one day.
They were buried in homework, the essay for Potions laying on the table of the library they were in. Hermione was close to finishing it while Ron had only written the title, much more occupied thinking about anything else.
"Papa doesn't like short clothes," Harry shrugged. "Even in sumner he wears long sleves"
Hermione looked up from her essay, a puzzled look on her face.
"Well, I suppose he doesn't want anyone to see the Mark," she started in a whisper, unsure.
"What mark?" asked Ron frowning.
"The Dark Mark," Hermione said slowly, observing both of his friends with attention.
"Your dad was with You-Know-Who?" Ron asked, covering his mouth with a hand.
"My Papa defeated Voldemort," Harry growled full of anger, his voice so high a few people looked at them.
Hermione sushed him not wanting any more attention from anyone else. She signed them to close their head so they could whisper.
"Have you ever read a bloody book about the War?" she asked in disbelief. "Professor Black was one of the most important people in defeating You-Know-Who, but he was one of his followers for a few years. I'm sure he doesn't want anyone to see the Dark Mark on his arm. He must had got it when he was serving Him"
"Do you think he will show it to us?" asked Ron amused. "Harry, what do you think?"
"Don't think so. You can still try," Harry shrugged.
Regulus was finishing his class, closing the books and getting ready to go to the teacher's lounge when he saw them.
"Can I help you, little Gryffindors?" he asked raising an eyebrow. Regulus observed with a little smile how the three twelve years old jostled one another whispering "you go", "no, you go". "Is any of you going to talk or do I have to keep waiting all day?"
"Professor," Ron finally talked taking a step forward, "would you show us your Mark?"
Regulus' eyes darkened instantly. He was no longer warm nor soft. "You are going to be late for your next class. Go"
Harry took a step and grab Regulus by his robe so he wouldn't leave. "Papa, is it true? You have the Dark Mark?"
Regulus felt each word like a dagger to the heart. He closed his eyes to try to supress the sadness creeping all over him. "Haz..."
"You have it then?" the boy asked, frowning and a little pout.
"Yes. But I'm not going to show it to you. Children, go or Tuttle is going to take points from Gryffindor for being late," he sighed.
When the three children step out of the class, Regulus gave himself a minute to catch his breathe because he felt like someone had punched him. With shaking hands, he started writing a letter.
"My deer James,
I fear the time has come. I thought we had more time, that Harry would be older by the time we had to explain to him how everything happened, but he asked me today if I have the Dark Mark.
It's time he knows how the Dark Lord was defeated and what we sacrified, what we had to do.
Love you"

Pool me out
Regulus Black x James Potter, Sirius Black x Remus Lupin
warnings: none? Regulus is a sad fuck, but he's not even sad at the moment. That's just his personality.
summary: The boys are spending their days by the pool. Introductions are made and the pinning begins.
word count: 1396
author notes: it's just a snippet of a longer fic I may or may not write (with a high emphasis on may. The plot is already laid out) later. It will be happy, as it is a vacation fic, but there will be angst drama and suspense. Regulus and Sirius have good sibling dynamics. But for now, a little head dive into the mind of Regulus Black. Let me know what you think.
Regulus was finishing his croissant. He likes to put prosciutto in it. The outraged huffs Sirius makes every time he does it make it even better. His brother’s devotion to sugar is boundless. It’s not like Regulus doesn’t like sweet breakfast. The wide variety of marmite flavours offered at the hotel does catch his attention but he’d much rather try it with some hard cheese. He likes to take anything sweet with a pinch of salt. Literally and figuratively.
“so… do you like summer? What is your favourite season?” he overheard from the table beside them. He tried hard not to let out the scoff that was building inside his throat. He flushed it down with the rest of his coffee. He passed a brief glance at the boy who asked the question. Seems like he finally managed to persuade that poor girl he was after for at least a week now to sit at breakfast with him.
“May I be excused?” He asked looking down at the empty cup he’s just placed down on the table. Walburga nodded without as much as looking at him. Both she and his father were glued to their phones, no doubt checking the stock market. He stood slowly, careful not to make a sound with his chair. “Maman. Papa.” He said politely, slightly bowing his head at them.
Oh, how he despised those empty shells of people. Nearly as much as he despised himself for playing along with their rules. He would never stand up to them like his brother did. Sirius did that loudly and frequently, which was getting him into much more trouble than, in Regulus’ opinion, was necessary.
Regulus hated the coldness surrounding his parents but he appreciated the silence. If there was anything Regulus hated more than the cold, it was the noise. He collected his belongings and left the table. He held his book and sunglasses in one hand while he tucked the sketchpad carefully wrapped in a towel under his arm. It was a set he always took with him when he was going to sit by the pool. Bare necessities.
He had to sneak his sketchpad carefully for his mother not to see. She didn’t appreciate him engaging in such “soft and pointless” activities. She was annoyed enough by the amount of poetry he read, but she hadn’t forbade it. At least not yet.
“what’s your favourite season” he thought to himself in his mocking inside voice. What kind of a stupid question is that? How is one supposed to answer that?
Regulus didn’t have a favourite season. He hated them all equally, each for different reasons. He hated the cold spreading through his bones after every encounter with his parents… and any other family member, for that matter. Except for his brother.
Naturally, he wasn’t content when the ice spreading throughout his soul was met by the chill surrounding him on the outside. Not to mention the scarcity of daylight that heavily impacted his drawing sessions, because the lamp light was just not it.
One would think he should blend right in with how dark and gloomy he was himself, but he didn’t. If anything, it was making him more depressed, if you’d believe that.
It’d make one think he enjoyed the summer, but no. He hated the sun hurting his eyes and making his head hurt. It made everything else, the sounds, the smells, sharper and more prominent. Regulus was getting quickly overstimulated by it.
He walked by the pool, and obviously, Sirius was already in. As he was every day of their stay. Sending longing stares after that tall scarred lifeguard he denied he fancied, and looking away sheepishly every time the other looked back. Yet, when he didn’t look back for too long, Sirius would cause some chaos around himself to get his attention. The fool. Regulus shook his head fondly at his stupid brother, who didn’t even notice him passing. Too busy perfecting an underwater handstand, by the looks of it.
Regulus headed to his favourite spot. He was pleased to see it was as deserted as always. Other people seemed to crowd closer to the pool and choose loungers standing in the direct sunlight. Regulus liked the one partially hidden in the shadow cast by the red-brick wall, as opposed to the ones in the shadows of the bushes. Because bushes equal bugs.
And bugs? Immediately no. Count him out. That’s what he hates the most about spring. Blooming flowers seem to attract butterflies and all sorts of other monstrosities.
He laid out his big fluffy towel on the lounger and sat down. The top half of his body, most importantly his face, was protected from the invading sun, while he could still enjoy the warmth of it where it covered his legs. “Perfect.” he thought to himself whilst he nodded slightly in approval. He hasn’t picked up his book or sketchpad yet, too preoccupied with the rant on the seasons he carried in his head while staring into nothingness.
Now the thing about autumn is… His chain of thought was interrupted by a movement in his close proximity. A hand holding a bottle of water appeared in his line of sight. He startled as he re-focused his eyes and took the sight in.
He slid his eyes up the arm. The arm that looked like it was carved in stone by Michelangelo himself. Marble made look soft. Sun glistened in the tiny droplets of water splayed on dark, tanned skin. It looked like sprinkled gold. Regulus frowned and glared up to see the boy he’s often seen join his menace brother in his pool shenanigans.
“Here.” he said, shaking the bottle slightly, with a wide smile plastered on his face. His hair seemed unruly even when it was wet. Some of it sticking to his forehead and his round-frame glasses and some curling around his ears.
Regulus blinked, possibly one too many times before he dropped his face. He looked back down at the arm outstretched in his direction. “where” he said flatly as he looked back up at the boy. That earned him a cackle in response. “You should drink it. I’ve noticed you never take water with you and it's pretty hot today so I’ve brought you some” the boy said, rubbing the back of his neck almost sheepishly but not at all embarrassed.
“Oh it is hot” he thought to himself  “you’ve noticed” he repeated the boy’s words, trying to keep his gaze from wandering. The boy dropped his arms and shrugged his shoulders cheerfully, “Yeah, I’ve been watching you and started to worry you would get dehydrated or something” a smile not leaving his face.
Regulus froze. He's been what? “and why, the fuck, would you do that?” he asked arching a brow at him.
“Oh you’re mean” the boy chuckled and sat down, cross-legged, at the ground next to Regulus’ lounger. “So..” he raised his hand with the bottle again “you’re drinking it?”.
Regulus tugged the bottle out of his hand as he rolled his eyes out of his skull but only because he was in fact, much to his annoyance, really thirsty. He drank some of the water, pleasantly cold, he noticed, and instantly felt better. Honestly? Fuck this guy.
“mhmm, refreshing” he said mockingly while squinting his eyes and curling his lips up, which made his brain pleasantly purr as it did every time he was quoting vines or some shit. “Well it’s not a bucket” the boy laughed, “but I’m glad you enjoyed it”.
Regulus blinked in shock again, people rarely get his references. Not that he cares, he does that to indulge himself. To scratch that itch. But that dude did, and Regulus didn’t know how he felt about that. “I’m James by the way.”
“James” Regulus heard himself repeat in his mind before he could stop it. He felt a weird sensation of warmth tentatively spreading through his chest.
“And what is your name?” James asked looking at Regulus playfully. He realized he must be getting hot after all. He’s not having that. Whatever that was.  Regulus put down the water bottle, stood up and, without even glancing in James’ direction, marched towards the pool.
“Hey! Where are you going?” he heard James yell after him. “To drown myself.” He replied, not turning around.

[decided to post a thing for @girl-with-goats @hp-yuletide-bliss !!]
ch.1: Gingerbread
December, 1983.
Voldemort has been defeated.
The closest Regulus has come to dying (so far) has been suffering through the completion of his undergraduate thesis and attempting to convince his mother that he doesn’t need her help finding a witch to ‘court’.
(He has, somehow, managed to find a witch all on his own. Her name is Diana. She is his snitch-girl, his sunshine, the single ray of light that shines even in his darkest of moments.)

The War & Peter's POV on the Attack in Godric's Hollow
⦁     When Regulus became a double agent, he did not become a member of the order. He simply leaked information to Dumbledore. Only the Malfoys are part of the original order and that only became known to the other order members after Voldemort's downfall.
⦁     Regulus and Dumbledore were working together on the horcrux angle separate of the order. Dumbledore wanted to mention horcruxes to as few people as possible.
⦁     In spring of 1980, Death eaters were officially recognized by the ministry. Investigations, identifications and arrests began. (Moody made a name for himself for arresting many death eaters.) An edict was issued giving aurors full permission to fight to kill and to use unforgivables. This added to the fear rather than help much. (In cannon, giants were the primary focus at first. Entire tribes were wiped out using the killing curse. The remainder went into hiding. They were allied with Voldemort.)
⦁     The Potters went into hiding in Godric's Hollow under a fidelius charm on October 20. The Potters wanted Sirius to be their secret keeper because he was so close to them and Harry's godfather. Sirius thought it was perfectly too obvious and suggested Peter, who no one would suspect. No one knew, not Dumbledore nor Lupin. It was need-to-know.
⦁     Voldemort tried to recruit Lily Evans and James Potter as well as Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew the summer after they graduated. Voldemort was willing to overlook Lily's muggleborn status because of her abilities as a witch, likely her smarts paired with potion and charms skill. They all refused to join his cause. (The first of at least three times the Potters defied Voldemort)
⦁     Lily and James got married soon after, at age 18.
⦁     Remus and Sirius got engaged in Hogwarts, near the end of the year. Their friends knew and where excited but it died down a bit once it became apparent they would have a long engagement.
⦁     The newly married Potters, Sirius, Remus and Peter joined Dumbledore's order.
⦁     Remus began taking undercover missions among Voldemort's werewolf allies. Most full moons were spent with strangers 99% of the time.
⦁     In canon, Peter retrieved Voldemort's wand after the attack in Godric's Hollow. In my AU, he didn't think to care about the wand.
⦁     He was laying low near the Potters to see how it played out. When he saw a small explosion followed by a larger one which took out a chuck of the upper house, Peter assumed Voldemort killed the Potters and waited for Sirius to arrive to pin the blame.
⦁     Sirius never showed, but the Malfoys did. They confronted Peter (who was confused bc he thought they were death eaters but went on with his act bc ofc he wasn't the only double agent, ofc Dumbledore had one) and Peter shouted about how the Blacks were in allegiance with Blacks, the blast which killed 12 muggles 'and Peter' except the plan didn't work.
⦁     The Potter confessed they swapped secret keepers. Sirius backed the Potters. The Malfoys revealed the blast's origins.
⦁     Peter was arrested around midnight, found in human form but he got away as a rat. The rest of the marauders+Lily played dumb on the animagus thing like Peter being a rat was a surprise in every way.
⦁     Peter lived as a rat, not risking his true human form, for years.
The General Immediate Aftermath
⦁     After Voldemort's downfall, the post-war round ups and trials and revolts and attacks began. Aurors, order members and other ministry LEOs and officials search globally for Voldemort after the Godric's Hollow attack but they never found anything. Voldemort's death was eventually accepted and the people moved on to the death eaters at large. This effort was led by Dumbledore, Barty Crouch Sr., Moody (like in the books) and heavily assisted by Sirius and James (AU change).
⦁     Many death eaters got away from persecution. Many, such as the Malfoys, claimed to be under the imperius curse which worked because many were actually under the curse. Many use power and wealth to avoid being imprisoned. Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Nott, Avery, the Carrows, Crabbe Sr., Goyle Sr. and Corban Yaxley got away and carried on with life unpunished.
⦁     Dumbledore held an order meeting November 12 1981 at the Lupin-Black residence; all the remaining members except the Potters, Regulus and Remus attended. By this point the news of the Boy-Who-Lived spread rapidly throughout the wizarding community and Regulus' allegiance to the Potters and Dumbledore spread among death eaters.
⦁     James was just discharged from the hospital. They were settling into their new place.
⦁     Nott and the Malfoys were outed to the other order members. Snape too, calmly by Dumbledore rather than the manner that brought the others into the open.
⦁     Regulus was the only entirely outed spy; death eaters, other order members, somehow the prophet got word and then ran with it.
⦁     The order members, including the Potters and Sirius, would've heard rumors about Regulus but none of them believed it until Dumbledore confirmed it at the meeting.
⦁     Nott and the Malfoys explained how Nott saw Pettigrew and Regulus put it together and quickly strung together a plan.
⦁     The Malfoys told everyone that Regulus sent them to Dumbledore and the Potter's place because the dark lord knew where the Potters were from Pettigrew but he couldn't go himself because he "needed to make sure the dark lord could properly die" and they hadn't seen him but they had received owls; he was at his childhood home (Grimmauld Place).
⦁     They were informed by Dumbledore that Peter's mate didn't know he was a spy. For his failure and hand in the Voldemort's downfall, werewolves attacked Peter's mate and two-year-old daughter on the November 11 1981 full moon (I hope I got this right).
⦁     His mate didn't survive. The baby did and was registered by the hospital.
⦁     Admission of a person for lycanthropy at a magical hospital legally requires the staff to report the patient to authorities to ensure they are properly registered. (If being a werewolf isn't part of the chief complaint/symptom, some elect to not say anything at their own risk)
⦁     (My mental real world parallel/inspiration is the relationship between American hospitals and ICE regarding illegal aliens. Some hospitals are rigid in reporting such statuses and some won't engage if they don't have to like a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy. A lot of the time, it comes down to a doctor, tech or nurse saying something or keeping it to themselves and also, like JK, I pull from AIDS/HIV too.)
⦁     Her name is Chelsey. Personally, I'm not fond of the name (no reason, I've never disliked a person/character called that or been wronged by a Chelsey) yet, I let my dog out to go while thinking about this AU and was listening to nearby sirens when I glanced at him (my dog) just as he was dropping a turd and the name popped into my head, clear as a bell: Chelsey. Why police sirens and dog shit made me think that? I don't know.
⦁     With a warrant out for her father who was at large and her mother dead, Peter's daughter had no parents. Neither of her parents had siblings and all four grandparents were dead.
⦁     On Dec 1, 1981, Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange as well as Barty Crouch Jr. abducted and tortured Frank and Alice Longbottom for information on Voldemort's whereabouts which they didn't know. They were tortured clinically insane with no hope of recovery. Kingsley Shacklebolt and Moody led the arrest of the Lestranges and Crouch Jr. The attack horrified the magical public and is considered one of the worst modern crimes committed. (Not the cannon date, I picked it as a timeline marker)
⦁     Lily saw the way that Voldemort died/fled in a shadow form so to give her sanity, she was brought into the know and then she demanded to be brought on the horcrux project with James. She got her way, though under the impression the sole horcrux had been found by Reg. The horcruxes were a project worked on by Jegulily before jegulily was a couple plus Dumbledore as the leader.
⦁     The four of them knew that Voldemort could make a comeback to life. I imagine for a couple years, they'd be afraid it would happen any day, any moment. That the war may not be over after all. Then that the war is only hitting a lull. Then that there will be another one. They never really think it's over.
⦁     They relax partly with the knowledge that they have the only horcrux, not Voldemort, but never entirely until it's destroyed.
⦁     They know this means they may need to play this deadly game of chess again, that they should keep some pieces in place.
⦁     Regulus' cover is blown. The death eaters know. Peter was shouting in the streets during his arrest, trying to frame the black brothers as if they were secretly in kahoots with their family and the dark lord.
⦁     Regulus is death eater enemy No.2, right under The Boy Who Lived.
⦁     Dumbledore gave testimonies for Snape and Regulus. Both trials weren't very publicized, Dumbledore ensured it.
⦁     The Malfoys and Nott though, nobody knew. At Regulus' request, they used their shady cannon means of escaping ministry suspicions so they wouldn't be affiliated with Dumbledore.
⦁     This resulted in people thinking they got off with a slap on the wrist so they took matters into their own hands.
⦁     The Malfoys were attacked in early December. They were able to defend themselves but they took a few hits. They were mostly fine but Narcissa was hit with a spell that was causing increasing stomach pain.
⦁     However, when they decided to get it checked out, they learnt the curse had wreaked havoc on her insides, making it so Draco would very likely be her only pup.
⦁     Regulus thought that there was only one horcrux and he hadn't destroyed it, he was working on that and while he had it, Voldemort (in his weird ghost form possessing animals) didn't have or know where it was.
⦁     He was under the impression that everything he gave was worth it bc voldy was truly gone (or just about). He didn't know about Harry or the other five.
⦁     On December 18 1981, Dumbledore disband the order with a final meeting, during which those who didn't know learnt about the Longbottoms and that Neville was placed into the care of his grandmother.
The Black-Lupins Immediately After The War
⦁     They never said it out loud but neither James nor Lily wanted to take Chelsey Pettigrew in. They didn't blame her, she didn't pick her father, but they weren't sure they could be fair to her, given everything with her father. They didn't think they could raise his child right after he failed to have theirs killed.
⦁     Remus wanted her. He understood how tough her life was going to be and if people knew what her father did, she'd never be raised without the bias. He figured he could maybe tell her about the good parts of Peter before she grew to hate him too much; that if there was bias in her upbringing, it shouldn't be completely negative.
⦁     Besides, Sirius once told him that his bloodline being evil was the reason he never wanted children; like Blacks were genetically predisposed to becoming bad people. To be fair, they were 16 at the time and Sirius was stoned when he said it.
⦁     Sirius did entertain adoption as a fantasy but he never committed or shared with Remus. When the war happened, it was the last thing on his mind.
⦁     Sirius also thought having bad parents provided a poor example of what to do and he was doomed to hurt his kid and make them hate him.
⦁     He spoke with James about it a few times after he ran away. James wholeheartedly disagreed. That didn't change Sirius' thought process.
⦁     Those two reasons boiled down to: Sirius didn't want to directly or indirectly hurt a kid, much less his own child.
⦁     Sirius rejected the idea at first. He didn't think about it until after he rejected it.
⦁     Sirius adopted her as her sole legal parent. Remus wasn't approved bc he is a werewolf and deemed unfit to adopt. Sirius was approved overly quick bc Chelsey is a werewolf, meaning no foster home would want her long-term (or even short-term) and she certainly would never be adopted.
⦁     Lily and James gave them some 'tips' and a few items to help. Remus and Sirius did a few preparation shopping trips and turned their spare into a nursery.
⦁     Sirius was nervous he'd mess up the kid. Remus said she would already be messed up; they could help her.
⦁     Remus was nervous too. He always assumed he wouldn't have pups bc of his furry little problem. No one would want him for a mate (Sirius did) and since there was a very small chance of his condition being genetic, nobody would want his pups (Sirius does).
⦁     Lycanthropy being genetic isn't cannon. In my AU it's like a 1% chance but possible.
⦁     If he entertained the thought, he always thought he'd keep himself away from his kid the night of and right after the full moon but Chelsey threw that off.
⦁     Sirius already loved her, like he loved Harry, the child of his friend, like a niece/nephew and Peter's choices didn't really change any of that. Yet she was in their home for 36 hours before Sirius picked her up and he felt a disconnect when she cried even as he took care of her needs.
⦁     Then it simply clicked for him, simpler than magic, and she was his and one of them (a Black-Lupin without the name).
⦁     He was still scared of being a bad father to her. That didn't dissipate for months, and never entirely.
⦁     Once it clicked for him, he took one glance at their home and decided they were overwhelmingly under prepared.
⦁     He brought Chelsey to the Potters and made them give him a crash course in keeping small humans alive and healthy.
⦁     He called them all the time. So did Remus. Middle of the day, middle of the night. It didn't matter. (none of them had parents to harass for info and advice)
⦁     He used magic to remove the legs of his and Remus' bed so it was flush on the floor with no underneath. This was so he could put Chelsey in their denned nest and not worrying about her falling out.
⦁     Remus came to bed early one evening and found the two in his den. A please rumble escaped his chest as he crawled in behind Sirius who was curled around the pup.
⦁     "Hey," Sirius whispered, shifting onto his back and bringing Chelsey to his chest.
⦁     "Hey. I don't mean to wake you."
⦁     Sirius ran a finger from the top of her head to her bum then rested his hand on her back. "I wasn't sleeping."
⦁     "You brought her into the nest." Remus whispered.
⦁     "Yeah, I did. I couldn't leave her in the nursery." Remus didn't comment that she'd been doing just fine and barely woke Remus up at nights. "She's not bad."
⦁     "No, she's not." Remus said, his eyes resting on Sirius' hand on her back.
⦁     "She's pretty great, y'know? She's just.. She's a great baby." Remus could've swore Sirius sounded a little in love. Or high.
⦁     They were soaking in her peaceful slumber when Sirius spoke again. "I want a baby. Not right now," he added quickly when Remus jerked up to look down at him. "Just someday, maybe in a couple of years, one of ours, like me and you.. and Chels.. Okay, you can say something now."
⦁     "I thought you said you had evil genes." wasn't supposed to be how he responded and judging by the way Sirius flinch like he'd been slapped, that wasn't what he was expected to say. "I disagree! But what changed your mind?"
⦁     "I thought I was the only decent one, except maybe Andy. But Reg is.. not so bad and Cissa has a little snot and there's Dora. I just, if I'm one of like half a dozen- I don't know and there's Chelsey too."
⦁     "Chelsey?"
⦁     "Peter, really." Sirius stopped for moment. "He's-- He did something rotten and maybe he's just rotten altogether, but she's good and I can't explain it, but I know she's good and she's gonna be okay."
⦁     "You don't have to explain. I think that too." They lapsed back into quiet again.
⦁     "You want my baby?" Remus whispered. It was supposed to be a bashful statement but it came out a question.
⦁     "Yeah. They could.. um, be like me and Reg. When we were younger, before shit went to shit. Like siblings; our babies."
⦁     "Yes. I mean, not right now. We just became parents but yes. Let's do that."
⦁     They had a nursery but by the time it was put to regular use, they had to replace the crib with a toddler bed.
⦁     Sirius went overboard babyproofing everything.
⦁     Chelsey cried for "mama" and "dada" a lot for the first few weeks she was with them.
⦁     Sirius cried with her a lot. Sometimes he just couldn't stand her distress and sometimes his mind wondered elsewhere. Their house smelt like a distressed omega which the pup picked up on and cried more.
⦁     Sirius pondered working, something he always intended to do regardless of wealth. He decided to delay it. First it was the war. Then it was settling Chelsey in.
⦁     Although he and James helped round up death eaters, which was dangerous and sometimes time consuming so really maybe he should've just joined the aurors trainee program.
The Potters Immediately After The War
⦁     James always wanted a younger sibling. That probably contributed to his relationship with Sirius.
⦁     He also wanted five kids. More if he could but five was the craziest he felt he could seriously ask a mate for.
⦁     After Lily had Harry (which James was with her start to finish), he changed his mind to "however many she's willing to have" because yes, he still wants many but no, he doesn't want to put her through that again.
⦁     He'd be so happy and excited for the second baby (or, babies) but also more caring with Lily then he was for the first pregnancy with Harry, to the point of overbearing, but it's because since now he knows all the gory details, he feels ever more guilty and appreciative to her.
⦁     After the attack in Godric's Hollow, the Potters moved to a 3-bed apartment in muggle London.
⦁     Lily did most of the apartment vetting, and dragged Remus or Sirius along for company while the other had Harry. She didn't need to tell them not to leave her alone until James was discharged.
⦁     They set the crib up in the living room low to the floor and James built a temporary cocoon around it for the three of them until Lily decided which room was the best for a den.
⦁     In January, weeks after the last meeting, Lily and James had a small pack get together to announce their second pregnancy (twins).
Regulus Black Immediately After The War
⦁     Regulus inherited the entirety of his parents' wealth bc they died thinking he was their perfect son; the one that turned out right.
⦁     He made a pretty quick recovery once the potion flushed out of his system.
⦁     Grimmauld Place was the only place he could think of on short notice. It wasn't supposed to be long-term but after word got out that he was on Dumbledore and Voldemort's sides, loyal to both at one point or another, and confusing details and full-blown fiction from the prophet made sellers, renters, teachers/trainers and employers very wary of him.
⦁     He hadn't had time to make any of the other estates habitable for human life and wasn't ready too.
⦁     Regulus was sick the whole month of November. He's the sort to hide away to handle illness on his own (if he can't function through it).
⦁     Yet when he didn't show to the second last order meeting on the 12th, Sirius narrowed his location to Grimmauld Place and took care of a feverish Regulus.
⦁     He'd get pulled away and call in back up: Potters.
⦁     Since he was sick, Regulus wasn't regularly taking his suppressants and blockers.
⦁     This wouldn't be a huge shock to outsiders, people often only where scent blockers outside their home.
⦁     Regulus and Sirius were raised by parents who had them on blockers and suppressants from the moment they presented.
⦁     Lily and James got to thank Regulus. A few times to make sure he'd remember through the fever haze.
⦁     He woke up and asked why Sirius or Lily and James were there several times.
⦁     Once he sat up and squinted at James with his curls tangled and greasier than Snape's. "I'm gonna change my name and start a new life." He muttered.
⦁     "Please don't."
⦁     "I like the name Leo."
⦁     "Very clever." James humored with a half laugh.
⦁      Once Regulus was on the mend and the fever broken, he insisted he could care for himself and changed his wards.
⦁     The wards change stopped visitors for about a week before Lily and James were back.
⦁     Instead of something normal and nice, like "hello" James said, "Are you going outside? Like, at all?" Sure, the Blacks were a pale bunch but Regulus looked like drowned death pulled back to the surface. ("James!" The alpha scolded unheard by both the guys)
⦁     Lily noted Regulus was smaller too with less definition in his cheeks and all his sharp edges were too sharp. He looked sick and as if anyone to touch him would be cut. She was kind enough not to say anything out loud.
⦁     Yet he looked better than he had a few weeks prior. His hair was washed at least.
⦁     "Uh, no." Regulus said without processing. It could've been James' tone. He blamed it on months of near-constant social isolation. "My social calendar isn't your business."
⦁     He didn't expect James to show up the following day, or the one after or the one after that but he had the memo by day four.
⦁     James would annoy him through the door until Regulus opened it to prove he still breathing and wasn't a portrait or something. Regulus thought Potter was a moron for thinking that seriously.
⦁     James didn't but he knew if he told Reg that he looked like he was on the brink of collapse and that he was visually checking the younger man's weight and frame daily, well he'd never open the door.
⦁     Regulus had tea ready on the fifth day and James, to his shock, was invited indoors to the living room.
⦁     His house and bed didn't smell like an omega. The nest had a light scent from sleep without blockers. That's it.
⦁     "Where's Evans?" wasn't corrected to Potter. James told Regulus that her 'morning' sickness had ramped up.
⦁     Also, Harry couldn't be left alone and they hadn't found a trustworthy sitter. Friends and pack mates would ask questions and also had lives of their own.
⦁     Also, the Potters agreed James being a beta may be less intimidating. But James didn't say the last bit.
⦁     James showed up the next day with a homemade meal from Lily. Regulus didn't send him away. He blamed it on lowered socialization standards due to being alone so long.
⦁     Regulus wolfed it back and James began to bring more food from Lily or cooking basic meals during his visits.
⦁     James checked on Regulus every day for two weeks until he told James that he was taking care of himself and James doesn't need to do it for him anymore.
⦁     James began visiting twice a week, on Tuesdays with Lily and Thursdays with Sirius.
⦁     Regulus realized he had a crush when he missed the alone time with James, then he became envious of Lily despite liking her.
⦁     Sirius didn't like Regulus living in Grimmauld Place and Regulus didn't like being there which resulted in Regulus moving in with Remus and Sirius. (Late January '82)
⦁     Sirius totally calls Regulus 'Reg/Reggie' and (when he is in his right mind) Regulus hates it. Which, of course, only encourages Sirius.
⦁     His hatred of the nickname melted away a little when Chelsey calls him 'Reggie'.
⦁     He still won't let Sirius. But Sirius overheard him talking to Chelsey one morning, "C'mon, Chels, you can do it. Say 'Uncle Reggie'."
⦁     "Reggie!" She shrieked. (A garbled mess of baby babble but 'Reggie' was in there)

Note
If regulus lived and saw the second war, what would he do post goblet of fire? Would he lay low and hunt horcruxes? Would he try and disguise himself and infiltrate the death eaters and find out about the other horcruxes that way? I can’t imagine him not fighting back given the knowledge he has, but I can’t see him willingly letting open his identity to the public.
Mistaken for Strangers is my Regulus lives AU which has essentially this premise, although Regulus' hand is forced a bit. His reaction would probably look very different if no one snitched on him to Voldemort.
So I imagine one of the first things Regulus thinks when his mark burns after Voldemort returns is that the Horcrux he thought had been destroyed must not have been actually destroyed. So his first action is to try to get in contact with Kreacher. He cannot get in contact with Kreacher, though, because Kreacher is bound to Grimmauld and Grimmauld is under the Secret Keeper thing...Fidelius charm. He panics.
He can't get into his own ancestral home and he can't talk to his own house elf and he doesn't know what happened to the Horcrux he stole but it clearly is still active because otherwise how did Voldemort come back? Regulus, at this point, thinks Voldemort only had the one Horcrux.
(Unless, of course, we're talking an AU where Regulus stuck around to destroy the Horcrux properly instead of pawning it off to poor Kreacher. In which case, he would be left to assume that Voldemort probably made more.)
Infiltrating the Death Eaters in disguise is risky business (but...RABastan AU?). Maybe if he was desperate. Maybe if he thought Sirius was in danger and this was the only way to save him and he already felt guilty enough that he let Sirius rot in prison for over a decade.
If he knew about the other Horcruxes he might try to go out and find them on his own. I like the idea of him doing solo ops and working against Voldemort but not joining with the Order.
One of the ideas I played around with when I was writing MfS was having Regulus repeatedly try to get into Grimmauld or get in contact with Kreacher unsuccessfully until winter, when Sirius tells Kreacher to "get out". Rather than going to Narcissa or Bellatrix, Kreacher goes straight to Regulus and they figure out how to destroy the Horcrux.
I think he would try to get in touch with Sirius too. He knows Sirius is going to get involved in the war again and he wants to be able to keep tabs on him. Make sure he's alive and ok.
I agree that Regulus would want to keep the fact that he's alive under wraps as much as possible and he would be happy to lie low, but that he is invested in taking down Voldemort, if for no other reason than personal safety. He would try to do something. But he's not about to be all loud and brash and Gryffindor about it, ya know?

Wouldn't it be cool if Regulus, James, and Lily lived and Harry didn't have a shitty childhood?
*Regulus patches James up after a death eater attack (after his death was announced)*
James: *surprised to see Regulus* You-you’re helping me?
Regulus: *wanted to avoid James seeing him* Must have forgotten I was a death eater. So don’t expect this to happen again.
James: *about to cry* They said you were dead. Everyone thinks that you’re dead!
Regulus: *knew this would happen* That’s not important right now.
James: The hell it is!
Regulus: James.
James: Why? If you were alive all this time why come back now?
Regulus: I’ll tell you when we get to your house. Right now Lily and Harry are in danger.
James: Danger? No one knows where we are.
Regulus: There’s a rat in the order.
James: What?
Regulus: No time, let’s go.

HP RP
Hello! 20F looking for a Harry Potter RP! I write 3rd person literate and only on discord. I'm open to any lengths and will adapt. I only ask that you are somewhat active. I will loose motivation if we are only writing once every couple days. I prefer to keep things SFW. Here are the characters I am looking to write right now: Andromeda Black Nymphadora Tonks Regulus Black A female OC (bisexual) Astoria Greengrass Teddy Lupin Scorpius Malfoy
(If you can't tell, I have a theme)
I am open to most partners and fun AUs, so just interact in some way and I will react out! (Some fun AU ideas I've had is Regulus living and becoming a professor at hogwarts and Tonks growing up in the Black family instead of outside of it- because of Andromeda getting stuck there)

sirius goes back for regulus it changes enough because regulus sees how peter gets quiet while james and sirius laugh loudly with each other and he moves to sit next to him and ask quietly about one thing or another because peter, now having someone to pay attention to him when no one else does, doesn't even think of betraying james and lily and with that on october 31st 1981 no one dies and no child is left with a scar on their forehead that would make them famous for something they didn't even remember regulus always was good at pretending not to listen and kreacher was and always will be loyal to his master regulus so the younger black still learns about horcruxes and he shares all he knows with dumbledore and just like that the order starts destroying one by one, moving in silence and shadows voldemort never knows what hits him in some other world james and lily potter die on october 31st 1981 and in this one they, together, destroy the last horcrux exactly 3 years later in that other world little harry becomes an orphan and has to live years with his aunt and her family not knowing of his magical side, in this one he celebrates his 11th birthday with his parents, his baby sister, his favourite uncles sirius, remus, peter and regulus and other magical and non magical friends but before harry turns eleven, he turns two and there is only his mother with him, he turns three, turns four and there never is more than two people bringing him cake and singing happy birthday there is five, which they spend at a hospital, because he refused to spend it at home while regulus is sick and alone and they don't have the heart to tell him that regulus probably won't hear them in the magical coma he's in it doesn't change everything alice and frank longbottom are still tortured to insanity and many magical and non magical people die but they do it with hope hope that it will end soon for those alive

“For all of their fear of monsters, dragons, and figures that lurked out in the forests, it was what they did to one another that was scariest. Human violence killed far more people than dragons.”
Damn.
