Sliiiiight nitpick, but I feel like Namco always has Mari Shimazaki make her most basic designs when it comes to Tekken 😅

She's made Bayonetta, of course, and she's even made some killer designs for Leixia's 1P and also Ivy's and Tira's SoulCalibur V 2P designs but her work for Tekken?

Josie is literally just the Filipino flag and an ugly haircut.

Kazumi is just a woman in a kimono, worn in the way dead people wear it in funerals and an old-time-y haircut, but don't forget the bows! Because no woman in Tekken should look older than 16!

And now Reina, she is admittedly her best Tekken design so far, I like the hoody, but the hair is kind of a mess and it's otherwise just too... Plain.

Like, I don't know, I guess she doesn't have to go all out all the time but I was genuinely, unpleasantly surprised when I heard she was responsible for Josie's look and while it's nowhere near as basic with Reina, it's too pre-Tekken 4 plain for me.

Mini-review:

I was really curious about this movie, since Mari Okada has written and/or directed some pretty amazing stories, and the promotional materials and trailers looked very interesting. However, I can't say I liked it as much as I expected. I did love how ambitious the film is in terms of concept and themes, and the animation definitely lives up to the Mappa standard. In particular, the final act includes some truly stunning visuals. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with these characters, and I didn't find any of them likeable or interesting. Therefore, this movie doesn't even come close to the emotional wallop delivered by the ending of Okada's previous directorial work, the beautiful Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. So yeah, Maboroshi is well-made, but rather disappointing.

Back in the day when Tanpopo on TV Ayappe said Yaguchi and Kaori would get into screaming matches backstage if the former felt like latter was using her senpai card too much. Before The Peace Yossy was told by managers not to go blond so she didn't stand out but she did anyway. Mikitty would argue with the senpai when she thought they were being unfair. Reina did her own thing when 6ki were scolded. There isn't any girl who stands up to staff or senpai now which is why the group feels SO strict.
