Illustrations made for Taimi supplements. Illustrated here are Reishi, Maitake and Chaga mushrooms. The style was heavily inspired by scientific botanical illustrations and getting a rough colored pencil feel while working with digital tools was a fun challenge. Mainly because I鈥檝e been a fan of old posters about plants for ages and overcoming my own criticism was sometimes tedious.
I illustrated one ingredient a day for over a month. A very focused and intense period of working but very good for learning and refining a technique.
And at first I thought it was Reishi mushroom, because the coloring and the reflection of light is very similar:
but then I saw this:
And that is also very similar! That second one is Ischnoderma resinosum, or resinous polypore.
I'm not sure how to tell which one is it, or if it's a mysterious third thing, can anyone here give me clues to how I could tell for sure? The flesh on my mushroom looks like this, and it's a little tough, but not super tough, like I could easily cut it with a knife if I wanted to:
This thing is massive and I'm wondering if I could eat it, it smells absolutely amazing, like a delicious tree mushroom.
you ever have that one oc that you just become obsessed with so u draw them all the time , make them ur avatars and online personas? Im going through that phase rn lemme show u something
Sooo this is Reishii
Sometimes i draw her with curly hair and a gap so she looks like me 馃構 but she rly just has straight hair and bangs.
Mushroom teas and drinks have really exploded in popularity recently but I am screaming at people to please be aware that:
IF YOU USE INSULIN YOU SHOULD NOT BE INGESTING STUFF WITH CHAGA OR REISHI!
Chaga has a bunch of amazing attributes including its ability to help lower blood sugar. But that means for those taking insulin or other blood sugar medication it can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS because of this. Reishi has the same issue!
Both Chaga and Reishi also can affect blood clotting so if you are having surgery within a month or have any other issues this would complicate please avoid them!
Reishi can aid in lowering blood pressure but if you are on blood pressure medication already, it can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low!
High doses of chaga can also cause kidney damage. I myself have harvested chaga several times and then tinctured some as well as ground some for tea. When I give it to folks I always make sure they know you SHOULD NOT BE DRINKING CHAGA TEA/USING THE EXTRACT EVERYDAY!
I've said this once and I'll say it until the end of time: herbal medicine is still medicine. It affects your body through specific compounds and mechanisms and is not exempt from the due diligence one must do when starting any kind of other new medication, including possible side effects, interactions with existing medication, and possible allergies. (Don't get me started on making sure people using SSRIs/SNRIs don't use St. John's Wort at the same time.)
If it's something you're taking consistently, if its at all possible, please please please consult a medical professional. I know not everyone has access to medical care like that, but at the very least please do extensive research and err on the side of caution.
