Everyone hated Murdoch Foyle, a college professor who became obsessed with the notion that he was Egyptian King Memses’ earthly reincarnation and needed four goddesses to accompany him to his kingdom in the underworld. Not only did he kidnap and murder four innocent young girls, including Phryne’s little sister, Jayne, but he also killed his former students and girlfriend without batting an eye as they were no longer his faithful followers and served no purpose to him. At the end, he almost succeeded in ending Phryne’s, Jack’s, and Jane’s lives as well. Calling him the public enemy number one in the Miss Fisher fandom is definitely not an overstatement.

As much as I detest this delusional lunatic, his snippet at the end of S1E11 Blood and Circuses kind of applies to my current situation, so I am dedicating a post to it. Shortly before Miss Fisher Con 2023 (St Paul, Minnesota, July 27-29), my thumb drive containing most of my Miss Fisher related material got corrupted. It houses the show and movie scripts, links and indexes of all my posts on Tumblr since 2014, the draft of posts for the next two months, various ideas I had jotted down over the years for future posts, etc. Needless to say, I was distraught and even contemplated the end of my blogging altogether. However, seeing my fellow Phryne friends – and the very special guest, Marion Boyce – at the con reminded me why I fell in love with this show in the first place. Phryne would be sorely disappointed if I simply gave up and walked away.

So, I decided to continue and have formed an action plan. Even though the prognosis is not good and I have likely lost my thumb drive to the great black beyond, I won’t give up trying to bring it back. In the meantime, I have started new draft for future posts from scratch while gradually re-compiling the scripts, links, indexes, etc. It will no doubt be tough, but like Phryne said, “Nothing that matters is easy”, and I shall persevere.

p.s. Note to self: From now on, be diligent about backing up files!

1. Top 5 Episodes?

I hate you so much. How dare you make me choose.

5. Murder A La Mode

For the “lethal dress” scene alone, I have to put this up there. The murder is clever, but the banter between Jack and Phryne is so top notch this episode, and she gets to parade around looking even more stunning than usual, which I didn’t think was possible.

4. Blood at the Wheel

Someone give Nathan an award for his acting in this episode. Jack’s terror at thinking Phryne’s dead, and his realization afterwards of what it means for him, for her, and for their relationship, is so deliciously painful.

3. Murder Under the Mistletoe

Most shows wish they could imitate Agatha Christie this well.

2. Murder in the Dark

That motherfucking wolf costume. Fuck. The mounting terror, the tension, the fake-outs. The sheer stress building in your body as you watch these characters you’ve grown to love being targeted and you know the killer’s going to strike but not exactly how and you can’t do anything to stop it as the clock counts down towards zero. *chef’s kiss*

1. King Memses’ Curse

The culmination of the best of the season-long arcs. We hear Jack call Phryne by her first name for the first time, we get to see what a true queen Phryne is, and we get to see her get closure for the traumatizing death of her sister. The entire cast coming together to protect and save one of their own. The way the show handles Phryne’s grief and PTSD is so well done, so poetic, and Foyle is acted to chilling perfection while also being shown for what he, and all others like him are: pathetic.

10. Character You Relate To The Most?

Miss Fisher, actually. Although she is undoubtedly the more sophisticated, competent, fashionable version of me. I want to be her when I grow up.

But the protectiveness towards others, the “fuck society and rules” attitude, the moral code that is different from most but nonetheless made of steel, the feminism, the open approach to relationships, the ferocity in speaking up for others, the desire for justice, the refusal to let anyone faze her or see her wrong footed, the calm demeanor even in danger because fuck if you’ll let an asshole know he’s made you scared, the compassion without allowing yourself to take shit?

I identify a lot with all of that.

12. Character You Can’t Understand?

Collins, as much as I like him. I know that this is greatly in part because I’m a 21st century woman, but I just don’t understand some of his behavior. Like trying to propose to Dottie while she’s trying to solve a murder. Not standing up to his mother more when his mom’s getting on him about her disapproving of Dot. Expecting Dot to stop detecting after she gets married when he knows how much she enjoys it. Going off on a fishing trip and not talking to Dot about his troubles when she’s supposed to be shortly sharing her life with him.

I just... je ne comprais pas.

24. Most Visually Stunning Episode?

Murder Most Scandalous. The outfits of all the girls, the glitz and glamor of the club, the fan dance... I love it.
