It's so interesting at how things changed. Early on, Elijah protected his youngest siblings. Then the guilt from him not being able to do the same for Klaus caused him to enable such horrid behaviors for centuries, all under the guise of "Klaus will do good if he's happy."

So, in helping Kol and Rebekah, he feels he betrayed Niklaus. But the reality is, he betrayed his youngest two siblings by enabling Klaus. He could never be a good brother to all three of them at once (forget how he treated Finn, but to be fair, that was equal opportunity loathing). But I also feel circumstances never truly allowed him to.

Elijah is really such a complicated character and brother.

but like as much as i don’t want rebekah to be asking for scraps of affection from matt i appreciate the fact that she and klaus are so infatuated with two “normal” people who are often overlooked by their peers and the narrative in general, especially because matt and caroline are so similar in the fact that they’re so loyal and would do anything for their friends, they’re very morally driven and have a strict moral compass, and the way caroline and matt refuse to fall over klaus or rebekah which is exactly why klaus and rebekah value their opinions so much............ like as someone who enjoys klaus and rebekah as characters it’s very fun to watch them fall for people they’d never consider falling for if it was a matter of power or gaining the upper hand because that’s not what klaus and rebekah truly desire - except rebekah knows this, knows that she wants a simpler human life, and runs toward any chance of happiness, while klaus as usual gets in the way of his own because he’s a self saboteur (something that caroline expressed frustration with in the last ep)

the salvatore brothers were dicks as usual, not respecting elena’s wishes

i don’t like that rebekah’s happiness is in her brothers’ hands because that’s literally how it’s always been, but at least elijah is more sensible about it and less selfish than klaus, and has like. a semi good reason to deny rebekah her Cure. elijah’s being responsible so good job i guess

also the fact that klaus was so wrapped around caroline’s finger he got her a dress (it doesn’t advance the plot at all i don’t think it’s just funny and kind of sweet), and i got a steroline dance AND TYLER’S BACK??? AND WE GOT A FORWOOD DANCE?????? it’s so beautiful :’) my three best caroline ships

bonnie won prom queen and she completely lost her chill with elena, good for her

i don’t like the way elena treated bonnie but fuck the salvatores for thinking the reasonable solution was to kidnap her and torture her humanity because they can’t accept the fact that she doesn’t need to be fixed and repeatedly told them so, they have no rights and i’m absolutely sick of them

the way elijah called rebekah - or at least silas!rebekah - cinderella is so soft and i wish they’d give more relijah scenes to us

klaus as usual is a twisted maniac and i love him

How would you have made the relijah dynamic more complicated/dysfunctional, etc if you could? 😊

Hey kids, remember this scene? That’s okay, neither did the TO writers!

To be honest, I’m actually really glad they de-clawed Rebekah to an extent and had her just get along with one of her siblings. But like I said in my tags here, I feel like it was just out of convenience.

“Hey, we need a way to get Rebekah to New Orleans for the spinoff! But she’s mad at Klaus, so she doesn’t want to just pop in on him.”

“What about Elijah? She could be coming to town to check on him.”

“Wait, does Rebekah even like Elijah? How have they acted in their other scenes together?”

*checks notes* “Well, she called him pathetic once, and later told him the three of them were ‘distrustful acquaintances’ rather than siblings. But I’m sure we can make it work.”

In TVD when the Mikaelsons were introduced, I got the feeling that Elijah was a bit out of touch with Rebekah. That he still thought of her as that innocent girl from their village, even though she clearly had evolved past that. He kind of wanted her to be that girl again, like when he challenged her to act human for a day to earn the cure.

Meanwhile, Rebekah seemed...I don’t know, a little bored with him? Like she didn’t want to be coddled and treated like a child. Stop acting like I’m a baby, I’m seventeen!

But hey, that was TVD, and not everything on there worked. The original dynamics the writers set up were a little too contentious for main characters of a tv show. It worked fine on TVD because they were secondary characters, but on TO the dynamics had to be a bit more...sustainable.

So really I’m not sure that I’d want to change the relijah dynamic, because if it were more dysfunctional it would end up too much like klelijah. Elijah hoping for a return to an idealized version of his crueler younger sibling, while said younger sibling either brushes him off or goes behind his back to gleefully do villainous things.

I’m kind of glad Elijah is more chill with Rebekah, and his main conflict with her is “please be nice to Niklaus.” And I’m glad Rebekah gets along with him in TO—it matures her and really helps hone in on why her relationship with Klaus specifically is so broken and messy.

If I were to complicate at least one thing between them, I think I would expand on the red door plotline a bit. I’m not sure how, but it’s hardly discussed at all between them. Rebekah has to break his neck to protect Hope, but then later she’s completely fine with him? Maybe she is overly protective, and she feels like she can’t trust her big brother anymore because he’s becoming unpredictable like Klaus. Maybe he feels frustrated and coddled (saying more than one line about it) and hey! maybe even understands why Klaus chafes so much under Elijah when he’s in *babysitting mode.* Idk, the red door plotline had so many possibilities that they never expanded on. What a shame.

Elijah paces. 

Rebekah quirks an eyebrow at him. “Really, brother. It was obvious from the moment that he saw the body and how the look of delight on his face when Lector was saying those jokes and playing the humans. They made for each other.” Her lips spread into a viscious smile. “I, for one, can not wait for when Nik’s plan blows up in his face as it is always bound to.” 

Elijah makes a face.

Of course. Rebekah would be on board with Niklaus. (He had seen the way she also looked at Lector.)

“Now come to bed, leave this alone. You’re creasing your forehead.” Rebekah lifts the cover up for him. Elijah sighs but slides into the bed, beside her. 

Rebekah smiles up at him as he shifts closer, curling a hand around her waist. 

“There,” She says. “That’s better.”  It’s true, he is better. He feels the tension loosing from his body as he curls against her side, and feels her arms surounding hm. 

“Nik does whatever he wants, I doubt that he’d go far as to let that man eat him.” Rebekah wrinkles her nose in disgust. “And…”

Her voice lowers, her deliberating fingers pressing along up his back—Elijah shivers. “He’s ours.”

You just know when Kol and Klaus were out slaughtering villagers Elijah and Rebekah were feeding on a nice family they charmed into coming over for dinner. They’re originals not off brand rift raft.
