This is Strider! He’s a “wolf ambassador” from the nonprofit organization Apex Protection Project’s sanctuary in Acton, CA. He was rushed to the emergency room yesterday and is currently undergoing a plasma transfusion to stabilize him before he goes to another hospital for overnight care. Apex needs to raise $10,000 (a cost that is steadily rising!) to cover his medical needs.
Strider first came to Apex with a broken skull when his owner tried to kill him. He’s a beautiful and incredible example of perseverance and survival and a reminder of all that apex predators—and biodiversity in general—do for our planet! It’s up to us to help them! Please donate to Apex Protection Project on their website or their Instagram and help save Strider!

Fifty Wolves Howling
I never get tired of hearing them. I was able to spend the night at one of their camping events this past summer before Zephyr passed away. Nothing is as beautiful or haunting as all these wolves howling in the darkness.

Wolves are such beautiful animals and an essential part of a healthy, sustainable ecosystem.
But they’re also some of Mother Nature’s greatest wanderers.

16 wolves have been killed in MT's hunting season. How many more will be slaughtered before they are issued an emergency relisting of protection for wolves in the Northern Rockies?

Hey y’all, in leu of recent events, here’s a friendly reminder to contact your local representative and voice your favor of wolves being relisted in the US. We’ve got them registered in the vast majority of states, except for the Northern Rockies, where approximately 80% of the wolf kills are seen. Let’s try and make this change.

Doing a comparison of the Washington State Wolf Management Plan to the Colorado State Wolf Management Plan before my meeting. These documents are actually pretty similar. Unless wolves start eating trees they also aren’t in my wheelhouse. Anyway.
Tribal Rights:
WA: Goes into detail about treaty rights and how tribal treaty hunting rights have higher authority over state rights. Tribes were able to develop their own wolf management plans if they chose to. The largest number of culled wolves in WA also comes from a specific reservation. Working group study find that 9% of suitable habitat is on tribal lands.
CO: Does not go into detail about tribal treaty rights, besides focus on Ute wanting a firm 60 mile boundary between their reservation and any wolf release. This may be due to the structuring of treaty language and treaty rights as a whole in CO than a reflection of the Wolf Working Group.
Property Compensation:
WA: Has provisions for property damage, crop damage, and livestock damage. A population of 50 wolves is expected to kill 1-6 cattle, 7-16 sheep, (no number for dogs), and 0-1 horses. Estimated value between $2,254-13,243 per year.
CO: Lethal and nonlethal control of wolves allowed. 100% fair market value of predated livestock up to $15000 for confirmed death or injury (including guardian dogs).
Delisting/Population:
WA: Delisting from state sensitive when 15 breeding pairs are present for 3 consecutive years. 4 in each region and 3 anywhere else. Estimated 210 wolves total. Acknowledged that lawsuits will occur when delisting happens. Was a conflict within the group about this number of pairs being too high. Sooner wolves are delisted the sooner WDFW can manage them. Floats idea that packs will be hard culled over 18 breeding pairs but high likelihood of failure.
CO: 150 wolves for 2 consecutive years or 200 wolves. Will be relisted if population declines. Also acknowledged lawsuit potential over delisting. Delisting maximum counts are not population objective or maximum.
Important to keep in mind: WA’s elk face intense pressure from hunters (both tribal, rural family’s, and sport) due to hoof rot which is slowly killing the population. Once infected with hoof rot it will kill the animal in 1-2 years. Hoof rot is not in CO as far as I can tell.
I had no idea that the vote for wolf reintroduction was a 51-49% split. Congratulations to wolves and I wish kindness and patience on everyone involved with conversations around them.

Indigene der USA fordern Notfallschutz für Wölfe
Tumblr media
Originalartikel

IMPORTANT: Wolves under review for endangered species relisting in the US - ACT NOW!
EDIT:
THIS KEEPS GETTING REBLOGGED - THIS IS NOT CURRENT, BUT THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO HELP WOLVES!
Please check out some of the many other actions you can take to save wolves! There are many great organizations and conservation societies you can support and leaders you can contact! We all still need to take action - wolves are still in danger and being killed as I type this!
This is a good site for resources. There are many more, but you can get started here.
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone! I hope everyone is doing well!
I have an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.
Wolves are currently, until December 16, under review by the Fish and Wildlife Administration of the United States to be relisted as an endangered species. The Trump administration delisted wolves, and since then, there have been so many sickening slaughters in multiple states - trapping, hunting, aerial hunting, every single method of death humane and inhumane (many extremely inhumane) are being used to kill wolves by the hundreds. This species cannot take that many deaths and so much senseless hate. The War on Wolves bill needs to be stopped.
NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT. Click here for more, and you can find a link to the site to send in comments here on this page.
Please, please, PLEASE take even just a few minutes to send in a comment and make our voices heard - we must save wolves and we must save them while there are still wolves to save!
NOTE: You can do this regardless of whether you are a US resident!
I cannot emphasize how important this is, to me and to the entire planet. Wolves are a keystone species and are an integral part of the environment, in addition to being beautiful and incredible animals on so many levels (many of which I discuss often on this blog).
For more info on just how important wolves are, even just looking up the wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone National Park highlights just a few of the many ways wolves are so necessary for the greater health of our planet. There are many good videos about it on youtube alone.
Wolves have been, and it seems they always will be, victims of senseless hate. Now we have a chance to do something.
Please share this, spread the word, and let’s make our voices heard!
Raise your voice for them and maybe we can save the wolves!

this isn't something i would normally post obviously but i just wanted to take the little platform i have on this blog to talk about something very important.
in october 2020, the trump administration lifted protections on the gray wolf. they claimed that the wolf population had "bounced back", when in reality, just around 3,000 wolves currently live in the wild across north america. they removed the gray wolf from the endangered species list, allowing the states to create their own policies regarding hunting them. a few states, namely montana, idaho, and wisconsin even encourage the killing of wolves (up to as much as 90% of the populations); they allow cruel tactics such as wire snares, using dogs and vehicles to chase down wolves until they tire, and even behavior as vile as stomping on pups in their dens.
for example, in wisconsin, 216 wolves were confirmed dead in the first 60 hours of the hunting season. they wiped out 20-33% of the population in 3 days. THREE DAYS. this percentage was their entire allotted quota. they approved an additional quota of 300 more wolves to be hunted. indigenous people fought back against this decision as it violated federal agreements- to no avail.
in idaho, the foundation for wildlife management uses state funds to pay out bounties to people who have killed wolves.
in montana, the state government has sanctioned killing up to 85% of the wolf population starting in fall 2021. new laws allow for the use of choke-hold snares and extends hunting further into the breeding season. montana governor gianforte personally slaughtered a wolf at yellowstone national park.
several politicians in the aforementioned states even vouch for year-round wolf hunting seasons and giving out bounties, and encourage the cruel methods i previously spoke about.
this sheer lack of respect for life is disgusting, but it isn't too late to save the wolves.
donate. spread awareness. take action.
i created a gofundme for the wolf conservation center. here is the link to the fundraiser, and here's some info on the wcc, gathered from nywolf.org. if you'd feel more comfortable, you can donate directly to them on their website.
"The Wolf Conservation Center teaches people about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future."
created by hélène grimmaud in 1999, the wolf conservation center is a not-for-profit environmental educational organization. they aim to protect and preserve wolves through education, advocacy, and participation in federal recovery and release programs. they emphasize the protection of the mexican red wolf and the gray wolf.
you can also check out relistwolves.org for more information regarding the new hunting laws and how else you can help out. i wanted to create a fundraiser for them too but couldn't figure out where to donate- i'll update this post when i get more information.
if you made it all the way through this post, please donate if you can. if you can't, please like and share this post, tell your family, tell your friends, tell your coworkers. spread the word. if we don't speak up for them, who will?
