THINGS TO DO IN POPULAR INTERRAILING DESTINATIONS
Interrailing often means spending only a couple of days in a series of European cities. This is an excellent opportunity to explore new cultures and cities and to discover which cities you want to return to so that you can explore them further in the future. However, on the trip it’s important to make the most of the short time you will get in each city. To help with this I have listed a series of 5 things you’ve got to do in some of the most popular interrailing cities.
Paris Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without a trip to the Eiffel Tower. However, there are many ways to view this famous structure. Whether you decide to wander around it, cycle under it, climb to the top or to picnic in the park overlooking it, this is a monument that must been seen on a visit to the city. The Arc du Triumph is another famous monument in the French capital, which is a must-see on any trip here. There are two famous churches to visit in your time in the city. Sacre Coeur can be found on top of the hill and is met with a glorious view over the city. Notre Dame is a beautiful gothic church that can be visited for free. If you have the time sit in the square in front of the cathedral as the sun sets and watch the lights illuminate the façade. Finally, visit the Louvre, not only for the classic picture in front of the glass instalment but to see the artwork inside the museum.
Rome When in the city of Rome there is more to be done than just to eat some authentic Italian pizza. No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Colosseum. This ancient monument is positioned in the middle of a busy road and is both wonderfully out of place and an integral part of the city. It is also essential to view the beautiful Trevi fountain when in the city of Rome. When visiting this sight remember to follow tradition by making a wish on a coin thrown in the fountain. Within the city of Rome is another country itself. A visit to the Vatican is another essential part of any trip to Rome. Wander through the wonderful Vatican Museums, take in the beautiful artwork in the Sistine Chapel and wonder at the beautiful grounds of this country within a city. Finally, there are two churches that are a must visit in your time in Rome. The Pantheon, once a temple and now a church, boasts a magnificent dome well worth a sighting during your time in the city. Nearby is Chiesa di Sant’Iganzio di Loyola, a beautiful small church with amazing artwork in a beautiful peaceful square. Berlin Berlin is a city full of history that needs to be explored before moving onto the next destination. A visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial as well as the East Side Gallery help to explore the history that surrounded the broken city during the Cold War. You can follow the line the wall took through the city on which you will find Checkpoint Charlie. These monuments and remainders of the wall can help to understand the extent of the separation of the city throughout the late 20th Centuty. It is also important to visit the numerous holocaust memorials to remember those who lost their lives during World War II. The most famous of these memorials is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. However, there are more around the city which remember the numerous different cultures and people who lost their lives during this time. It is also worth visiting Brandenburg Gate with the ‘Quadriga’ statue to be found on top. This monument is central to the sightseeing of Berlin. One building only a stone throw from this monument is the Reichstag Building. This building is now the home of the German parliament. It has been marked by the history of the city as it has been bombed, burned and rebuilt. There is a lift into the dome, which offers amazing views of the city.
Amsterdam Amsterdam is a beautiful city to stroll around and take in the sights. The most important thing to do in Amsterdam is to explore the canals, although avoiding this may be difficult! Whether you decide to take a boat trip, cycle around the canals or simply wander through the network of bridges and canals take in the beautiful sights these bodies of water give to the city. Jordaan is described as Amsterdam’s most charming neighbourhood. It is worth wandering through this quaint area. Once a poor area, Jordaan is now filled with art galleries, gardens, bars, restaurants and antiques shops. Wander through this neighbourhood to explore the charm this area has to give the city. Vondelpark provides an escape from the bustling city. Ride a bike through the beautiful park or wander over the bridges and around the ponds full of swans. Enjoy this park, which until 1953, was only accessible to the most wealthy residents of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is also home to many museums and cultural exhibits. The Anne Frank House should not be skipped by anyone who visits the city. The museum dedicated to the girl who documented her hide from Nazi forces during the Second World War is a moving depiction of what it was like for Anne and her family to live in the Annexe during their time in hiding. This educational sight is moving and a must see for all who visit the city. The Rijksmuseum, found next to the famous red and white lettering of Amsterdam, is filled with artwork, including pieces by Rembrant, Vermeer and Van Gogh.
Prague Prague is a city with an amazing atmosphere make sure to spend as much time in Old Town Square as possible, enjoying the street performers and bustling atmosphere the centre of the city has to offer. An important sight of Prague is located in the square. The Old Town Hall is a must visit, with a viewing platform overlooking the town it is a beautiful sight to wonder. On the side of the Old Town Hall you will find the astrological clock, which moves on the hour between 9am and 11pm. Venture across the beautiful Charles Bridge and walk up the hill to see Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral. These beautiful buildings are a wonder to take in and should be visited by anyone who visits Prague. Key Information

When it comes to depictions of death-in-life, this can't be beaten. My second-favourite painting, next to Rembrant's Pallas Athene. Yep, that's #nofilter John Everett Millais's painting Ophelia, which hangs in the Tate. Incidentally, the process of painting this nearly killed the model, who posed in a bathtub in the middle of winter. The artist let the heating lamps go out, and she caught what was almost literally her death of cold. #death #art #cateateyeballs #preraphaelite https://www.instagram.com/p/B1joyncBakU/?igshid=xqkhbo4471r0
