sometimes it’s sad that the default fanon for McCoy is grumpy, annoyed, no fun allowed, old, and done with the world
when this guy also enjoys the life so much and to the fullest - he loves food, drinks, he loves good times (he’d go bar hopping with you if you asked), he likes sex, he loves research, he’s curious, he likes jokes, he likes to tease and “prank” others

Finally making more progress on the pile of ST books I own but have yet to read. Here’s some good stuff from The Vulcan Academy Murders by Jean Lorrah.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: The cover of the book The Vulcan Academy Murders. The background has lots of dark purple tones. In the foreground, Spock stands with a phaser pointed at a Vulcan creature with green skin, a cat-like face, a fin down its back, sharp claws, and a long tail. The creature is hissing down at Spock from a rock. End ID]
First of all, what is going on with this cover? Nothing like this happens in the book.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Kirk recalled that all male Vulcans were married—had to be—and glanced at Spock. His First Officer, however, was very busy inspecting the almost un-touched wine in his glass.” End ID]
Interesting interesting. 👀
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “Kirk had been given Spock’s room (underlined red by me) and McCoy the guest room in Sarek’s house—a house far from anything Kirk would ever have imagined as the home Spock had grown up in. He had envisioned either a sterile, unadorned ‘environment,’ or a castlelike ancestral residence. Instead, the house on the outskirts of ShiKahr was a simple single-family dwelling.” End ID]
This book is way too casual about Kirk sleeping in Spock’s childhood bedroom. Also, there’s no mention of where Spock is sleeping while they’re there???
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “He remembered forcing Spock to control his emotions when he was five, and his schoolfellows taunted him for being ‘different.’ Under his father’s tutelage, Spock had refused to cry when the others shut him out of their games, calling him ‘Earther’ and ‘half-breed.’ Amanda had hidden her tears from their son, and Sarek had hidden his anger. Or had he? Perhaps I directed it at my son instead, he realized. He had intended to prepare Spock for whatever lack of acceptance he would face in life. And the message Spock received was that his own father did not accept him as he was, had to mold him into something he deemed acceptable.” End ID]
We love reflecting on our past mistakes. 👏🏼 We love character growth. 👏🏼
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “’A computer cannot lie,’ said Spock. ‘Nevertheless, this one is giving false information.’ ‘Why don’t you try playing chess with it?’ came a voice from the doorway. Sarek turned to find Leonard McCoy, bouncing on his toes and grinning.” End ID]
I love them. I can picture this so perfectly.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “’What dost thou know of Surak?’ she asked finally—but her voice spoke more of perplexity than challenge. ‘What everyone knows: he was the founder of Vulcan philosophy. I know he is a personal hero to my friend Spock, the way Abraham Lincoln, from human history, is to me.’” End ID]
Kirk will bring up Abe Lincoln whenever he has a chance. That’s canon now.
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “’You are not only anything, Spock. You are more, not less, because of your dual heritage. It is fruitless to wish now that I had made that clearer to you when you were a child.’ ‘You wanted me to be Vulcan.’ ‘That is true,’ Sarek agreed. ‘And you are Vulcan, representative of IDIC in its fullest sense.’ Spock studied his father. ‘You never put it to me that way. The last time you and I spoke as father and son, before I went to Starfleet Academy, you reminded me of how important it was that I think of myself as Vulcan. Do you remember your words, father?’ Sarek remembered. ‘I am Vulcan by birth. Your mother is Vulcan by choice. You are Vulcan by both birth and choice.’ ‘And then I disappointed you by making a different choice.’ Sarek searched his memory, trying to recover the logical reason for what now seemed completely irrational. Finally, he said simply, ‘I was wrong.’” End ID]
Yes! Let’s talk about our feelings! Let’s resolve those daddy issues!
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “He went back to his room—Spock’s room, really. Kirk had brought with him a sturdy suit and boots, for Spock had suggested they might go camping in the mountains after the summer heat abated. (Last sentence underlined in red by me.) He put on the boots and the trousers to the suit, but decided the heavy shirt would be far too hot—" End ID]
Spock wanted to take them camping. 🥹
Tumblr media
[Text ID: “‘He will recover, though?’ asked Spock. ‘Yeah—you can see him later, Spock,’ said the doctor. ‘He’s gonna be in considerable pain—you’re probably the only person he’ll be able to stand. Your son would’ve made a good doctor,’ he added to Sarek. ‘I don’t know how he does it, but he’s really good with people in pain.’ Spock’s eyebrows shot up at the unexpected compliment from the man Sarek usually saw him trade barbs with. Then Leonard left them to go back to his patient, and Spock turned to Sarek. ‘May I ask you something, Father?’ ‘What is it, Spock?’ ‘When Mother became conscious, you called her…?’ ‘Beloved.’” End ID]
Spock being very concerned about Kirk’s injuries. Bones saying Spock is the only person Kirk would tolerate while in pain. Spock asking his father about expressing love for an outworlder. It’s a lot.

Hold on (Rewrite)
Spock x Reader
Word count ~1,700
Author note: this is a complete rewrite of a story that I started before the tornado 2 years ago. I finally took time to rewrite it! I decided to go ahead and make this one big part instead of multiple small parts, considering each little part was less than a thousand words. I hope you enjoy this, it’s dear to my heart since it’s one of my first post tornado rewrites.
Spock and reader are on an away mission, when the battery drains in their devices. After surviving a brutally cold night, Spock has a confession to make to y/n. Mild danger, with some fluff at the end.
—————————————————————————
My hands crack from gathering berries and firewood all day. Fearing that the Enterprise would not find me before nightfall, I begin making preparations for how I will survive the night in this frigid weather. After sitting down at the campfire near the cave entrance, I hear footsteps approach. Just as I am about to grab my phaser, a familiar voice calls out.
“It would be illogical to cause harm to someone who is offering to help,” the voice says.
I breathe a sigh of relief. “Mr. Spock, I’ve never been so glad to see you.”
Spock nods, “it is fortunate that you are unharmed. Unfortunately, we will be stuck here for the night; the power from my tricorder has been drained.”
I check my phaser. “The power from my phaser has been drained as well.”
Spock glances at my hands in surprise. “You are injured, let me inspect your hands.”
“It doesn’t hurt that bad,” I fib, sitting on a rock beside him.
“I fear that you are in the beginning stages of frostbite. May I bandage your hands for you? It will not be much help to the current damage, but it could help to prevent further damage.” he replies, with an expression that would be blank to most, but I could see the slightest bit of concern.
“Oh, um, sure…” I stutter, trying to hide a blush, I had a small idea of what hand touching met to Vulcans. I gain composure and remind myself that this is strictly for medical reasoning, plus it would be illogical for my fellow, stone faced officer to make a move on me.
Spock grabs a salve and some wrap from his bag, and hands the salve for me. “You rub the salve over the frostbite, and I shall wrap them for you.”
I had to hold back a chuckle, thinking of how sensual it would be if he had to rub to salve on my hands himself. But also, would it be sensual if he saw me rubbing the salve on my hands.
“I don’t believe frostbite is very amusing Lieutenant Y/L/N,” Spock states. Perhaps my grin was a little too noticeable.
“Oh, sorry,” I state grabbing the salve, and starting to rub it on my hands (non sensually). “I was just remembering a previous conversation to distract me from the pain.”
Moments later, after I have made sure to medicate every inch of the frostbite, I hand the salve back to Spock.
“May I wrap your hands now?” he asks. I nod in response. He unravels the wrap, and lightly, grasps my wrist. “Please hold this end for me.”
I grab the end of the wrap with my thumb, and watch as he secures it, while being careful to not directly touch my hand. He then moves to the other hand, again being careful to not make any necessary hand contact.
“It is primitive, but it should suffice for now,” he states.
“Thanks,” I reply, gazing at my hands. “It’s going to be nightfall soon, do you think we should gather more firewood?”
“That will not be necessary. You do not need to further injury, and we must conserve our energy if we have any chance of survival.” Spock replies, sternly.
“What are the odds that the Enterprise finds us before we freeze to death?” I ask, realizing how dire our situation has become.
“I believe the odds are astronomical. Given how the temperature plummets after sunset, we will be lucky to survive the night,” he replies grimly.
I raise an eyebrow. “I thought that Vulcans didn’t believe in luck.”
“I don’t, however, you do. I suppose you are, as you humans say, ‘rubbing off on me,” he states.
“Seems logical to me,” I reply, shrugging my shoulders.
Spock looks around the cave for a moment. “You wouldn’t by chance have a thermal blanket in your bag? The blanket plus the amount of wood we have for the fire, could potentially be enough for our survival.”
I rummage through my bag for a moment. “I’ve got it,” I finally say, pulling the thermal blanket out. “Do you really think it will be enough?”
“Affirmative, however, for the best efficiency, we will have to sleep close to each other and share body heat,” he replies.
I turn my head to hide a blush. “If that is our best chance of survival, then I don’t have a complaint.”
We add wood to the fire, graze sparingly on the berries, and attempt to settle into sleep.
————————————-
When I awaken, I am hit with a burst of cold air, causing me to shiver violently. Something tightens its grip on me, and I soon notice that it is Spock holding onto me. I also notice that our fire has nearly been extinguished.
“Y/N, are you alright?” he asks, gazing down at me.
I shake my head. “I-I don’t know, everything f-feels cold.” My body trembles more.
He tightens his grip on me. “I am afraid that both of our body temperatures are dropping rapidly. If we do not restart the fire soon, we may surely die.” He moves to restart the fire.
“S-Spock, you’re Vulcan, you’ll freeze to death!” I cry out.
“And if I do nothing, we shall both perish, and that is not a risk that I am willing to take.” Spock removes himself from the thermal blanket, ensuring that I am still covered.
“Spock, p-please,” I barely speak.
“Y/N, please spare your strength, and don’t argue, logic dictates that I at least attempt to save us, or at least you.” An ember grows as he adds firewood, and as the light grows, I notice him begin to shake. Despite being stronger, I know Vulcans have lower cold tolerance.
My own shivers silence me, and I silently pray that he can build the fire back before freezing to death.
Warmth and fire light grow ever so slightly, and Spock manages to get the fire going, and make it back to the blanket. I wrap the blanket around us both, and he once again, wraps his arms around me.
“It may take some time for our body temperatures to regulate, but I believe the fire will last the rest of the night. Please hold on to me to stay warm,” he states.
“A-are we going to d-die?” I ask in fear.
Spock looks into my eyes. “Ashayem, I need you to listen to me. I need you to hold on to me. We will keep each other warm.”
I tremble. “It’s so cold. I don’t want to die.”
“Y/n, I promise you that everything will be alright. Do not let go, there are only a couple hours of night left. I assure you that we will survive the night, please hold on,” concern growing in his voice.
I nuzzle closer to him, hearing his heart beat rapidly in his side. “Mr. Spock, please distract me from the cold,” I barely whisper.
“And how shall I do that?” he asks.
“Tell me something sciencey, preferably about the stars. Which ones shine brightest?” I ask.
He begins to ramble about the structure of the Milky Way, the life cycle of stars, spilling facts left and right, until his voice lulls me back to sleep.
—————————
I awaken to a beam of sunlight shining in my eye, and notice that I am no longer freezing.
Spock nudges me, “Y/n, are you awake?”
I shift to where I am no longer pressed against Spock. “We’re alive?” I ask.
“Affirmative, did I not promise you that we would survive?” he states.
I stand up, and walk to the cave entrance, sitting on a rock. The sun warms my skin, and I welcome it, gazing at the flora or this strange planet. Soon, the rock shifts, and Spock sits beside me.
I pull my legs up to my face, and rest my chin on my knees. “It sure is a beautiful planet in the daylight.”
“Not quite so beautiful as you though,” he states.
“Huh?” I gaze at him in confusion, and he looks back with the slightest smile. My heart pounds in my chest. “Y-you think I’m beautiful?”
“To me, you are the most beautiful creature in this universe,” he replies.
I press my hand to his forehead. “I think the cold made you sick, sir.”
He shakes his head, and lightly chuckles. “I assure you my health is perfectly fine.”
“So then why are you calling me beautiful?” I ask.
“Y/n, I have always found you beautiful. We were dangerously close to death last night, and I am not prepared to die without expressing how I feel about you,” he explains.
“Spock I… I don’t know what to say,” I stutter. “But I feel just the same. I’ve always admired you, your wit, your vast knowledge of things, and um… the ears.”
He quirks an eyebrow. “You like my ears? Fascinating.”
“More than the ears, I think you are quite attractive,” I state, heart still pounding.
I gaze back an forth between his eyes and his lips, and he leans into me. I breach the gap, and press my lips to his. He takes little effort to lift me onto his lap.
He breaks the kiss, and looks into my eyes. “Ashayem, you are so beautiful.”
“Ashayem, means “my love” doesn’t it?” I ask.
“Yes, it does,” he replies.
“But you are Vulcan. Do you feel love?” I ask.
“I may not express it, but I guarantee you that I feel it. You must not have any doubt that I can love. I can find you beautiful, and I can love you,” he gazes at me with his beautiful brown eyes.
“I-I love you too, T’hy’la,” I reply.
His eyes widen slightly. “You have been studying about Vulcan?”
I nod my head. He smiles, and kisses me once more, this time with a little more passion.
“Kirk to Spock can you read me?” Spock’s tricorder speaks.
“Spock to Kirk, I hear you loud and clear,” he replies.
“Do you have Y/n with you?,” Captain Kirk asks.
Spock seats me back on the rock, stands and helps me stand. He lightly kisses the side of my head before replying, “Affirmative Captain, two to beam up.”
Once we made it back to the Enterprise, Spock was adamant that I get my frostbite checked out in medical, while still Trying not to seem suspiciously overprotective. I had a feeling that it would not be long until Doctor McCoy fished all the details out of me

Done All Wrong
Spock x FemReader
Tumblr media
An: uh...this didn't quite go as expected so I'm sorry lol. By time noticed it was off subject it was too late soooo I deciced to go ahead and finish it. But don't worry I'm working on a fic more on subject to what you requested! 😭
Request: Spock x Reader where reader works under Spock and is terrified/attracted to him and thinks he hates her bc of his blunt Vulcan behavior? But in the end discovers he secretly is attracted to her and feels protective of her.
Warnings: embarrassing situations, anxiety, and some adult language.
Summary: You have a certain pointy earred alien on your mind for multiple reasons. You should hate him like he hates you but you can't bring yourself to. Much to your dismay and embarrassing moments ensue as a result.
You sigh staring at the specimen in front of you. A boring plain leafed plant from one of the recent expeditions. Ordinary nothing special. Quite lackluster and disappointing. Not someone anybody would care for. Someone? Gosh you need a break, this is getting sad. Projecting your angst on to a poor little plant is defiantly a new low. You shake your head and sigh running a hand over your face. A few of your fellow science officers send concerned glances your way. You flush slightly embarrassed.
'I need to get back to work,' you think. You know that you can't keep pushing of your work because of your silly angst. Especially since Sp- he would notice. 'Don't need to give him a reason to nag me.' Well not like you'd have to give him one. Lately it seems all he can do is nag and belittle you. Critiquing each and every little thing that you do. And yet you still lov-
"Ugggh, get it together lieutenant and stop acting like a child." You groan under your breath aggravated.
You pick up your pad and look at the plant to continue your observations. Aroma? Earthy and warm. Size? 11.9 inches. Form? Stalky lean. Leaf shape? Spatulate. Flower color? You lean forward, silly black blossom. Your heart races but you take a deep breath and continue. Leaf color? A lovely shade of green. It reminds you of the faint flush of-
"Is everything alright?"
"!" You let out a gasp and whip around. And of course wouldn't you know it, it's the last person you'd want to see. The object of your frustration and affections, Spock.
Spock's eyebrow twitches up. "My apologies I did not intend to frighten you."
"No! No it's fine. I just wasn't expecting you to just show up so sudden is all..." You put a hand over your racing heart. You can feel your cheeks burn with embarrassment. You wish you could just disappear right now. Maybe if you ju-
"Lieutenant, are you well? You have been distracted since you arrived for your shift. Aswell as your excessive sighing and your flush cheeks. Are you sick? If so I will have to implore you to go to sick bay." Spock admonishes you.
"I- I am not sick! I admit I'm distracted but...It's not- I'm not sick." You stammer. You can't believe he's calling you out like this, so loud and very public. It's humiliating. Your can't even look him in the eyes anymore. Because you're certain if you did he'd peer into your mind and learn as to why you been so distracted. You'd rather die then for him to find out. He's already cruel enough. Gosh, how could this get any worse?
And you to your horror you realize, quite easily is the answer. While avoiding his burning yet apathetic gaze you notice your coworkers glancing at the scene. Judging and knowingly. Some whispering, some pointing. They all know. They know why. They can tell. Your feelings. Oh my god...Oh god...Oh god-
Spock either doesn't notice your panic or doesn't care because he continues to chew you out. "Are you certain? Because it appears you are flushing even worse now. But if you are not sick would you care to explain your actions? Particularly talking to the plant you are supposed to be inspecting. That is certainly not an action a healthy and sane person would take. Perhaps you need to see a counselor or be reliev-"
"Just stop!" You snap you can't help it. You're so overwhelmed. Everything is too much. All the eyes looking at you. And him. Why does he have to hate you so much. Why... Oh god and now you've yelled at him! You've just made this into an even bigger scene. Thank god there's not too many people in the labs this late at night. But everyone will soon hear about this...oh god you're fucked.
You begin to tear up. You look into his eyes finally. His eyebrows are raised almost holding an expression of shock and maybe concern? Who are you kidding as if he could care. Even if he could care he'd definitely not care for you.
"Why? Why do you hate me so...so-" you're cut off by a small cry that escapes. You quickly throw a hand over your mouth to stop any more from escaping. Tears begin to run down your face. You panic, you need to get out as soon as possible and spare yourself any further embarrassment. You dash out of the labs. Leaving behind a shocked and confused Spock.
°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°••~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°
"I simply do not understand why she was upest."
"You don't understand why she was upset? You don't- My god how could someone so smart be so stupid!" Leonard McCoy exclaims exasperated.
"You think that I am smar-"
"That is not the point you pointy eared hobgoblin! Goodness gracious...look." McCoy sighs and leans forward in his seat giving Spock a tired glare.
"You insulted and embarrassed the poor girl in front of all her lab rat coworkers. Hell if I was her I would have done a whole lot more to you then shout and cry. I'd give ya what for." McCoy states plainly punching his palm with his clenched fist.
"I see...it was not my intention to embarrass her nor do I hate her."
"You don't?" McCoy looks at him in disbelief.
"What? Of course I do not hate her nor harbor any ill intentions towards her."
"Goodness Spock... you sure have a way of showing it. Look, I talk to her. We're close and let me tell ya you've been giving her some hell. Ya leave her as ill as a hornet. If you don't hate her then why do ya insist on angering and embarrassing that poor little lady?"
"I- I was unaware I was angering or embarrassing her." Spock says quietly eyebrows furrowed and slightly lowered. Truly he would never wish to upset you. He just wants the best for you and to help you be the best you can be.
"My god...you like her don't you? Heh... Spock you're in deep." McCoy laughs at Spock's expense.
"Please do not tease me. What should I do?"
"Your asking ME for advice? I never thought I'd see the day. My my my you do have it bad."
Spock gets up to leave but is stopped my McCoy's hand that pushes him back into his seat. "Yer not goin anywhere. Sit right there I'm gonna grab some drinks. We're gonna need it."
•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°•~°
"You've got five minutes to explain." You snap at him while leaning in your doorway.
Spock nods, " I am deeply sorry. It was not my intention to anger you or to embarrass you. Nor do I hate you, it is quite the opposite. I- I deeply enjoy your company and I find you fascinating. You make me feel although I do not know how to show it. But I will endeavor to do better if you could forgive me? And if you return my feelings?"
You stand in shock. There is no way this is really happening. "Pinch me."
"No, why would I wish to harm you? Did I not explain well enough I do not wish any form of harm or discomfort to you?" Spock says looking offended and confused.
"Nonono sorry, its just an expression. I just can't believe this is real. I must be dreaming."
"Dreaming?"
"Yes, because there is no way that this is real. That you're basically confessed to liking me and asking me out! No, its too crazy..."
"You are not dreaming. And yes I do 'like you'. I also would not mind if you would allow me to court you."
"I-I really?"
"Indeed." Spock looks at you. Wondering if he's made a mistake. Perhaps you don't feel the same? Or he's hurt you too much. Or any other reason.
"Yes! I mean, yes. I would like that very much. I've liked you for awhile now. Um but just please try not to be so mean?" You say with a bright beaming smile.
"Of course." Spock nods seriously.
"Can I please hug you? I'm just so happy!"
Spock nods and stoops down to wrap you in a gentle hug. You wrap yourself up in his lanky form. Maybe the plant is loveable after all.

"Spock, Messiah!" review
Tumblr media
This novel was written in 1976 by Theodore Cogswell and Charles Spano. The Enterprise crew is experimenting with some new brain implants, that are each attuned to one native of the planet Kyros, to acquire the same knowledge, personality and behaviour of the alien, and thus mingle better with them to study the Kyrosian culture. But everything backfires horribly when Spock gets the personality of a madman with messianic aspirations, and becomes the planet's tyrant.
The best thing of this book is that UK cover above, with fabulous Spock. Do not read this book under any circumstances. No, really, it's pretty bad, and Spock is barely in it. Though the novel has a few saving graces so I'll begin with those:
The Good: The story is entertaining enough, with a clever twist at the end. And even if the concept of having Spock as the villain or under some sort of mind control is nothing new, at least the Klingons aren't behind it for a change.
The culture of the Kyrosians is well developed and vividly described. As well as the intricacies of Federation's technology, if you're into that (I'm not, so I can't tell if the science is sound or not). Descriptions are too detailed for my taste, but your mileage may vary. Anyway, the action and danger keep things interesting.
Also Kirk is a history nerd.
The Bad: The authors don't seem to know or understand the characters. Scotty has red hair (?????). I guess because they wanted him to be as stereotypically Scottish as possible. Kirk refers to Spock as a living computer all the time, which is something that only McCoy would do, and only in jest. And in general, characters aren't... in-character.
The brain implant would have been a good idea to behave as a native and respect the Prime Directive, if the natives had at least been notified and agreed to it. As it is in the book, it's a flagrant violation of privacy. The Enterprise crewmembers are tapping into the aliens' emotions, memories and behaviours with no consent at all. Good job, Starfleet.
There's also some crap about Vulcans. Supposedly, Vulcans are biologically unable to feel emotions (no, they don't, it's just they're good at supressing them) and also have zero sexual urges outside pon farr (yeah, tell that to Amanda).
Which reminds me, the horniness level of this novel is absolutely off the charts. I don't think even the TMP novelization comes close. We have Kirk in the shower, feeling water massaging his "taut, muscular body". Though that's more or less in line for Kirk. But then we also have lurid descriptions of Spock having sex with a woman (non-consensual on Spock's side of course). A female ensign jumping naked to swim in a lake for absolutely no reason, or doing a full striptease before a horde of dangerous, hostile warriors. Chekov, naked from waist down, getting a hipo-spray in his ass right in the Transporter room, in front of everyone (okay, this was funny, but couldn't it wait for sickbay?). As well as the implication that Chekov got a cavity search from some guards. Yeah, I know the original show addressed sexual issues sometimes, but it was never this crass. This stuff is fine for adult fics, but here feels out of place.
All this would be somehow understandable if the writers had never seen Star Trek and were just doing a job. But it's obvious from references to other episodes that they've actually seen it. It's just they didn't understand shit.
The Awful: Almost every time Uhura or Sulu appear, they're referred to as "the black woman" or "the Oriental". Anyone who has seen five minutes of the series knows that Uhura is black and Sulu is asian, but reminding the reader of this fact all the time, kind of defeats the reason why Roddenberry wanted them on the bridge in the first place. Anyway, since Uhura and Sulu barely appear in the story, racism doesn't escalate beyond that. But then there's...
Ensign George. A female crewmember who is used to exemplify rampant sexism and misogyny galore. And since she's a regular character, there's plenty of opportunities for that. Every five pages or so, she loses her clothes, or is scantily clothed, or being harassed by leering men (including McCoy and Chekov). All of this, however, is fine since she's really slutty (actually not, she's being influenced by another person's mind). The writers run out of adjectives for her body: "sensous, voluptous, delicious". At one point, she literally says that it was "her fault" that Chekov got into a fight to protect her from a sexual assault (it would have been more noble for Chekov if he wasn't also harassing her two minutes earlier).
And how did Ensign George end up a regular in the story? She's interested in Spock, but as her real self is quite shy, she links herself to a seductive Kyrosian to get her abilities. Their personalities are too opposite though, so she loses control and ends up having sex with Spock. The incident leaves her ashamed and traumatized. What would the sensible thing to do? Remove her implant immediately and restore her to her normal self, right? Well, no. Let's leave it in her, so she can be used by Kirk and co. as sex object to bargain with the natives, should the need arise. The real Kirk would NEVER, you bastards!
Did I also mention that Kirk uses counterfeit money to reinstate a Kyrosian doctor in his clinic, after such doctor was expelled for drinking and abusing young women? Yeah...
If anyone thinks the original TOS was sexist, just compare notes with this novel. And remember, this book came ten years later. For my part, Cogswell & Spano can stick their writing up there where Chekov got the hypo-spray.
Spirk Meter: 1/10*. Kirk seems annoyed about women finding Spock attractive, and the one thing he can't believe is that Spock slept with one. Messiah Spock may be planning a war and conquest on a planet, that's possible, but this one thing has to be "an hallucination, as impossible as Spock flying". Kirk also sighs his name the first time their eyes meet, after being turned into the Messiah. However, most of the time, Spock is treated just as an enemy to defeat, and Kirk even coldly suggests killing him if necessary.
On the other hand, one has to wonder what's going on between Kirk and McCoy. The doctor is described as Kirk's only friend aboard (everyone hates Spock in this book), and the only one around whom Kirk can be emotional. The two of them spend a lot of time drinking alone in Kirk's quarters. The doctor enters uninvited while Kirk sleeps and wakes him with coffee. And he seemingly stays there while Kirk strips to enter the shower.
There's also a little bit, about McCoy being afraid of showing his "true feelings" for Spock.
*A 10 in this scale is the most obvious spirk moments in TOS. Think of the back massage, "You make me believe in miracles", or "Amok Time" for example.

Logos and Pathos Halloween Special 2023
Spock x Reader
“Alright, everyone,” said Kirk, walking in front of landing party. “We’re going to be heading down to the surface of Luguna. Starfleet has already made contact in the past, so we know that they are a friendly planet.”
The landing party relaxed. For once they weren’t going to a planet for an emergency call or a crisis.
“We have been invited to an old holiday celebration by the Lugunians,” continued Kirk. “It’s called the ‘Day of Masquerade.’ They dress up people as deities from their religion and mythology and celebrate their beliefs with a feast and dancing.”
Uhura smiled. “It reminds me of Halloween from back on Earth,” she said.
Chekov nodded. “Russian Halloween was always the best.”
“Clearly you haven’t been to an old country celebration of it,” said Bones.
            “Aye,” agreed Scotty.
“What is Halloween?” asked (Y/N) curiously.
“It came from an old pagan holiday and now it’s where people dress up in fun costumes and eat candy and dance,” said Kirk, smiling.
“Fascinating. In most cultures, holidays serve a specific purpose, but this one seems to lack such a reason,” observed Spock from beside (Y/N).
“Maybe it’s about hedonism,” said (Y/N), teasing the humans with Spock.
            “Perhaps,” he said.
“Oh, god, he’s learning to tease us,” said Bones, horrified at Spock so at ease with (Y/N).
Kirk just laughed as Spock straightened, a bit affronted at the implication he used emotions. “Alright, alright, let’s go.”
The landing party stepped into the Transporter and dematerialized, reappearing on the planet below.
The Lugunians, dressed a wide array of colors and outfits, smiled and shook their hands. They excitedly offered clothes and accessories to the Starfleet officers. (Y/N) smiled as the warmth of joyous emotions spread over them.
“Please, join us in our celebration!” said one Lugunian, wearing a large crown of flowers pinned to their coily hair. “We’ve prepared costumes for you all.”
(Y/N) smiled as several Lugunians held out an outfit to them. “We’d be honored.” They smiled at Spock and brushed a hand over his arm. “I’ll be right back.”
“As will I,” said Spock as several other Lugunians began to hand him an outfit.
(Y/N) chuckled and smiled at him before following the Lugunians to change.
l
“Well, Jim, these are some getups they got us in,” said Bones. He wore a loose tunic in a pale blue with a green robe wrapped around him. “Apparently we’re dressed as deities like they are.”
“Yep!” said Kirk, smiling. He had a white chiffon robe strung half across his chest ending in a long skirt on, and a gold arm brace strapped to him. “I’m the god of protection and loyalty.”
Bones snorted at how appropriate that was for the fiercely protective captain before him. “They’re damn good at giving us costumes. I’m the god of health and liveliness.”
“They definitely got me right,” said Uhura, walking up to them. She wore a dress that swirled in reds, oranges, and yellows at the top and blues, greens, and purples at the bottom. Golden bracelets hung from her arms, and she spun and posed. “I’m the goddess of beauty and love.”
“I’m the god of sport!” said Chekov, sporting a tunic or red and sandals with wings.
“Well, Captain, I don’t quite understand it, but I’m the god of wisdom,” said Scotty, wearing a grey tunic with a smelter’s apron overtop.
Kirk suppressed a chuckle, and Bones snorted. “Well, Scotty, you do love understanding the Enterprise and technology.”
            “I suppose, sir,” said Scotty.
“Hello, Captain,” said Spock, approaching the group after he finished changing.
Bones grinned. “Well, well, well, what did they put you into?”
“According to the Lugunians, I’m the god of hunting and providing,” said Spock. He had a deep blue tunic on with a leather harness for a bow on.
“What a coincidence. I’m the deity of nature,” said (Y/N), appearing beside Spock. He turned and paused. (Y/N) grinned at him and put their hands on their hips. “What do you think?”
They had on makeup to make them look like a deer, and they had a brown dress that shone gold in the sun that hung loosely around their knees. Vines wrapped around their legs and arms to complete the nature deity look. With their natural gold eyes, (Y/N) embodied nature perfectly.
“You look amazing!” said Uhura, grinning.
“It definitely fits your personality,” said Bones.
(Y/N) stepped up to Spock and cocked their head. He nodded and spoke quietly so the others didn’t hear. “You look nice.”
“Thank you, Spock,” said (Y/N). “You look very nice, too.”
Spock inclined his head in thanks.
Around them, music started up, and the Lugunians began dancing, quickly drawing the rest of the landing party in until (Y/N) and Spock were the only ones left. (Y/N) hummed along and swayed to the music.
“You should dance,” said Spock. “You are clearly inclined to.”
“I’d rather dance with someone,” said (Y/N), smiling at him.
Spock blinked. “I am unaccustomed to dancing.”
“I can help you,” said (Y/N).
Spock hesitated but a moment. “Very well.” For them, he was willing to try something new.
(Y/N) grinned, leaned up, and kissed his cheek. It was a thank you for going along with what they wanted. When they stood back, Spock reached out and took their hand. His fingers brushed theirs in a Vulcan kiss, an admittance of soft affection.
(Y/N) smiled and held his hand tighter before pulling him to the dancing. Pure love from his emotions filtered into them from their connected hands, and in the soft golden glow of the sun and their love, they began to dance together.

Rough thoughts on the movie in no particular order now that I have a moment:
Going in with the heavy hitters 'cause I can't stop thinking about it but Lui's claims that he is the first person to ever partner with a Digimon are unsubstantiated and lack hard evidence - also, unless it was explained in Kizuna and Tri, I'm pretty sure Digimon Adventure contradicts this?? (I'll check into this when I have more time, don't @ me).
The implication that Ukkomon made all of the Digimon hostile towards one another so that the Digi-Destined would fight to defend themselves and therefore Lui is nonsense and even if there is nothing to directly contradict it in Adventure and 02, I'm gonna hard pass on that canon because it lends itself too much to the idea that all Digimon would just be wholesome and good if not for Ukkomon making them fight and that feels like it excuses the things that Devimon, Piedmon, MaloMyotismon, and the other villain Digimon did or removes their free will?
Also, have I mentioned what Lui said didn't make sense???? Lui might be closer to Tai's age so it's feasible he could have become digi-destined around the same time as Tai but DUDE, Owikawa and Cody's dad discovered the Digital World and Digimon when they were kids????? AND THAT WAS AGES BEFORE LUI WAS BORN. It just doesn't make sense unless this is some alternate universe where that didn't happen or Lui is a time traveler or something (which is possible they did time travel...)
Speaking of, I'm so interested in the implication that Lui went back in time and talked to his mom about his younger self and she seemed to snap out of it for a second, like, if that was a permanent change do you think he created another alternate reality in that instance?
Moving on though, Davis. DAVIS. Seeing him in the film cured my depression. His reaction to Lui's mom was so so so Davis and I felt so strongly about it and then Ken's immediate "we can't we could ruin our own future" response is exactly how I've always imagined a time-travel AU would go between them.
ALSO: DAVIS AND KEN. The flirting. Ken just straight up grabbing both of Davis hands. (He's so COMFORTABLE WITH HIMSELF NOW) Ken throwing himself off Paildramon after Davis. I'm LIVING. The little high five they did to congratulate themselves. Ken's remark that summoning Paildramon was a little much seconds after I was like "wow that's so gay and unnecessary". Both of them were just so on point in this film. Davis was upbeat and optimistic and just believes the best in people/digimon so hard and when his tendency to charge in got in the way Ken was there to mellow him out so he didn't do anything rash.
Yolei did feel kind of off for some reason in the film but that might have been because I was so excited for the film that I couldn't pay attention to everything that was happening. I was only able to see it once and I missed so many things I know it. I can't wait for it to be released physically so I can own it and just rewatch it a dozen times.
Speaking of Yolei, though, I cannot believe the film framed her like Uhura trying to come between Kirk and Spock (which is comically absurd btw). In nearly ever scene possible it's Davis, Yolei but slightly offset and then Ken beside Davis. Like the animators are desperate to push the Kenyako narrative, like, clearly they know about the Daiken feelings being very strong with fans but they were trying to visually remind us painfully hard that, hey, actually the pairing is Kenyako. But buddy did that feel forced and it's probably why Yolei felt off to me.
J U S T I C E F O R C O D Y. That's all.
THEY COULD HAVE LET ROBBIE DAYMOND DO A TERRIBLE TEXAN ACCENT!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TRIED!!!!
Kari actually didn't have very many major lines in the film I felt like but I loved the little scenes of her at the beginning, actually, though, she was kind of just there next to T.K. the entire time because the film also framed them together so hard it's SO WEIRD THEY AREN'T CANON.
T.K. though. God he was just so T.K. in this film. The trauma of losing Patamon in Adventure and then whatever happened in Tri like. It was just the most T.K. thing to do and say when they were talking about what they had to do. But also, I loved whenever the cops showed up and Davis goes "WHAT, HOW DID THEY FIND US?" and T.K. was like "ARE YOU KIDDING!???? YOU AND YOUR BOYFRIEND SUMMONED A GIANT FLYING MONSTER!!!!"
Honestly, this movie was everything I ever wanted really. About three minutes before we went into the movie I was talking about ghost game with my friend and how I wished it hadn't been for kids because it had such great and frankly horrifying concepts and everything was just sunshine and rainbows for children and nothing bad ever really happened which was disappointing.
And then I watched The Beginning. This movie felt so much like coming home from the start because I felt like I knew these character's so well (I lost count of how many times I sat in the theater and said a thing, only to have one of the character's also say the thing a second later), and everything was so bright and nice and then it became an eldritch horror show.
Let me tell you, when I watched the trailer for the first time I said to my friend "dude what was with that trailer??? The music????? Why is it so sinister???" and, despite that, I still did not see the horror coming and neither did anyone else in the theater. Everyone and I do mean everyone went very still and quiet and tense the second the first hint of bad began. We were all so unprepared and it was very upsetting.
As I was leaving the theater, I heard a woman fighting with her husband over having brought their very little daughter to see the movie. The mom clearly thought it was a fun kids movie because it was animated and whoever is in charge of American films absolutely thinks all animated movies are for kids so it wasn't rated which is how the film industry always handles anime films.
They seem completely incapable of understanding that animation doesn't equal child friendly. Watching it, though, it's never been more clear that a Digimon movie was for older audiences than watching The Beginning. Like, this film was not for kids. This film was for us. The setting. The themes. The fact that 79% of the entire movie is exposition/dialogue...
When the little girl's dad asked her if she liked the film as it ended, he sounded strained and his wife was complaining that the film was going to give her nightmares and while his daughter said yes, she liked the film it was in a way that you could tell that no, she didn't really because she had no idea what was going on - it was bright and colorful and there were cute characters sometimes so that was probably fine but she couldn't have been older than six so it was probably very boring for her.
That is one of my few complaints about the film, actually. It was nearly all talking and exposition. I wish there had been more action. I wish it had been a little more light hearted and goofy at times. The eldritch horror/really messed up part of the movie felt like it went on forever but that might have just been my lack of prepardness for it. I was just so shocked even while my brain was like "yes, this is what we always wanted I AM LIVING" - also because I imagined that kind of awful, dark underbelly of the world of Digimon existing for the character's I already know and love.
Nothing is going to stop me from headcanoning that Davis reaction to Lui's mom being The Worst was so immediate and visceral because he's dealing with his own trauma from his mom's refusal to accept that he's trans, okay?
I didn't care a great deal for Lui and Ukkomon obviously disturbed me to no end - I know it wasn't Ukkomon's fault, they didn't know better but also it's fair to say that I was scarred for life about Lui's parents and the baseball bat scene and I would probably like Lui a lot more if his story weren't all conjecture and exposition. Also he was so negative (understandably) and was such a downer the entire film, honestly, thank god Davis and his endless queer energy was there to breakthrough to Lui and help him see the light of queerness friendship.
Anyway, did I mention Lui's claim that he's the first ever human to partner with a digimon doesn't make sense to me? I've thought about it a little more and, fine, maybe it's possible that Lui could be the first person to partner with a Digimon but the idea that everyone else became Digi-Destined because of him and Ukkomon still doesn't sit right. Oikawa didn't get a digimon until he was an adult and died and so even though he knew about Digi-World he technically didn't become Digi-Destined and the Digital World could have existed for ages before anyone partnered with a Digimon. Those things aren't mutually exclusive, I have to remind myself, but it just doesn't feel right to me and their claims being baseless seems more legit.
Okay, I'm done, that's it for my rough thoughts on the movie, I think. They probably won't get any clearer. I'm gonna use the film to further my Trans!Davis/Daiken headcanons for sure though.
One last thing though and it's that my friend said he hated Lui because Lui took away from the 02 kids and I had to remind him that Willis exists in Hurricane Touchdown and the majority of that film is Willis and Davis talking/fighting and the other kids just existing. It's not some wild new Digimon format to have a new Digi-Destined to center the plot around.
And speaking of the plot, a final thought is on the bit where their Digivices weren't relevant anymore. That isn't off-brand either actually. I don't like that they disappeared because I have an emotional attachment to them but I understand that the narrative was not needing to prove their bonds with their Digimon and therefore anyone can have strong bonds of real friendship with or without a Digivice aka being Digi-Destined - it also makes sense with the whole "we didn't need the tags and crests to Digivolve our Digimon because our real strength comes from within" narrative that the OG Digimon Adventure established. The Digivices and tags/crests were just tools to remind them of their bonds with one another.
Anyway, that's it. I'm shutting up. This post got so long I'm sorry but also if anyone wants to share their thoughts on the movie or my bad takes but in a fun way that's cool feel free. I'm always here to talk about Digimon and how this is gonna influence all my future headcanons things but seriously don't @ me out of malice. K THX

The reason why so many trekbros HATE The Motion Picture is because it quite literally makes no sense unless you interpret it as a love story. The death of the new Vulcan science officer at the beginning seems like meaningless brutality if you don't see it as a metaphor for Spock being irreplaceable. Spock, seeing no other alternative than to perfom Kolinahr and atempt to purge his emotions after voyaging with Kirk, and ultimately failing to do so makes no sense unless you accept that he had emotions for Jim he could not purge. And finally, above all, Decker and Ilia seem like flat plot devices if you do not see them as direct parallels of Kirk and Spock that exist to thematically explore their relationship.
There are countless hints to the parallels between the explicitly romantic relationship of Decker and Ilia and perhaps the not-so-obvious-to-some romantic relationship of Kirk and Spock. Just to name a few;
- Decker having been a Captain, and Ilia a science officer.
- Decker being a human and Ilia a non human.
- Ilias/V'gers (AKA the probe's) cold logic directly parallels Spock's philosophy. The merging of the probe may be parallel to the fact that Spock is a hybrid between Human and Vulcan. (Side note: The V'ger tries to repress Ilias emotions for Decker... remind you of anyone?)
- Deckers confidence, competence and sense of justness directly parallels that of Kirk's.
- Finally, this one is so damning to me; Decker and Ilia, just like Kirk and Spock, were explicitly stated to have recently been seperated. What relevance does this have if not to help the audience draw a connection?
Kirks parallel, Decker, realizes he would sacrifice his life out of love for Ilia. Note his final words to Kirk specifically "I want this as much as you want the Enterprise". Through Decker, Kirk learns that he is willing to sacrifice the Enterprise for Spock, something which he very soon does.
Ilia's arch, starts with her being transformed into a being of pure logic, an ideal for Vulcan's, for Spock, as exemplified by his Kolinahr ritual. Her arc is explored through the v'ger, where it learns that it without human connection it is incomplete. V'ger/llia is joined with her romantic partner Decker in order to become complete. Spock's arc is a direct parallel. Through the v'ger he realizes that pure logic is not an ideal worth striving for, and that state of being is what leaves it "barren and cold" and above all, like the v'ger, incomplete. In the infamous "this simple feeling" scene, Spock finally lets himself feel his strong emotions for Kirk, realizing that without them he'd be as cold, barren, and purely logical as the v'ger. In this scene he joins hands with Kirk, a deeply intamate Vulcan gesture, and shows him that he's ready to love and be loved.
Of course one could easily just point to the t'hy'la footnote in the TMP novelisation to prove that Kirk and Spock have a bond deeper than friendship, but I think it's important to state that its quite literally right in front of the audience during the entirety of the movie. Just like the v'ger and Decker needed each other to be complete, so do Kirk and Spock. When you see it that way, the ending is quite satisfying, but if you do not... well, you can go a head and watch wrath of khan or whatever.

DOVE TALE
Again and again I find myself sheepishly admitting that Star Trek, as in the original series, is my all-time favorite TV show. It's a little embarrassing to acknowledge that, north of sixty years old, I keep going back for comfort and refreshment to the corny sci-fi show that I loved as a kid.
Worse yet, for all the show's sophomoric heavy-handedness and cultural chauvinism and ludicrous science and inconsistently applied social values, I keep finding relevance, even prescience in it.
For instance, this past weekend I watched the third-season episode, scripted by the redoubtable Jerome Bixby (also author of the story that became the Twilight Zone favorite "It's a Good Life"), called "Day of the Dove..."
Tumblr media
You may remember it: Both the Enterprise and a crew of Klingons arrive at a planet, lured there under false pretenses by a powerful incorporeal alien Entity. Through a variety of mind tricks and matter transmutation, the Entity gets the Federation crew and the Klingons trapped together aboard the Enterprise, which is hurtling out of control on course to leave the galaxy.
Onboard, the factions are allowed their own turf, armed with swords--Scotty admires "a Claymore..."
Tumblr media
...and psychically aroused to furious hatred toward their adversaries and even toward each other. They soon discover that the conflict between them is self-renewing; their wounds heal miraculously and the Entity allows neither side complete victory.
As a kid, I always thought it was a pretty cool episode. It had plenty of action, including swordfights, and the coolest and most badass of all the original series Klingons, Kang, played by the rumbly-voiced Michael Ansara...
Tumblr media
...towering over Shatner...
Tumblr media
It was also the only glimpse we ever got, in the original series, of Klingon women, notably Susan Howard as Kang's wife and science officer Mara...
Tumblr media
In the course of the show Chekov, under the Entity's evil influence, attempts to violate Mara, although it looks like she could smack his little ass across the corridor with one hand.
Along with Chekov, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura all get to work themselves up into highly entertaining angry lathers in this one. Shatner's in particularly hilarious, wound-up form here: "Look at me...Look. At. Me." And there's the great moment when the hysterical Scotty, responding to Spock's attempt to calm him, says "Keep your Vulcan hands off me," but it sounds like he said "Keep your f**kin' hands off me."
But watching it the other night, it occurred to me that this episode seems unusually relevant these days. I noticed this a few years ago about the second-season episode "The Omega Glory" as well. The theme, about the dangers of fetishizing and theocratizing America's foundational documents and other objects of patriotic regard like the flag, seems like a pedestrian, basic civics lesson. But it turns out that our society needs to be reminded of it regularly.
Similarly, with "Day of the Dove," the message might seem, at a glance, like the usual honorable but ineffectual Star Trek platitudes about the horrors of war and the bondage of bigotry and the liberating virtue of tolerance. But now, in light of the revelations from the Dominion lawsuit, it has a strikingly specific subtext. Because, of course, the reason the invading Entity is attempting to create this hellish eternal conflict on the Enterprise is that it feeds on violent hatreds, turning from yellowish-white to a happy shade of red...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...when it sucks up some delicious fury.
It creates false narratives in people's minds to stir up their bloodlust--Chekov claims his brother was killed by the Klingons; Sulu later explains that the brother is imaginary, as Chekov is an only child--and feeds both sides with propaganda to gin up enmity. Essentially, the Entity is a farmer, planting outrage so that it can harvest rage.
In other words, the Entity is Fox News, and the "news" media machine of which Fox News is the most successful and egregious example. I mean, isn't it, kind of?
In this context, some of Bixby's lines take on an extra resonance, as when Kirk speculates "Has a war been staged for us, complete with weapons and ideology and patriotic drum beating? Even...Spock...even race hatred?"
Or, when Kirk says "It exists on the hate of others," and Spock replies "To put it simply. And it has acted as a catalyst, creating this situation in order to satisfy that need."
Or, again, Kirk's desperate appeal to Kang, in the climactic minutes: "...and it goes on, the good old game of war, pawn against pawn! Stopping the bad guys. While somewhere, something sits back, and laughs, and starts it all over again."
In the end, Kang is persuaded, a truce is ordered, and the weakened Entity is chased off the Enterprise to hearty laughter from both sides...
Tumblr media
Kang slaps Kirk on the back and for a second it looks like Kirk is going to pass out. A lovely moment; I would highly recommend it for our nation right now. But as the Entity goes flittering off the ship into space, it's all too easy to imagine it scurrying down to some TV "News" Network on some unsuspecting planet.

Why people think I ship Kirk/Spock:
*H0rny thirst*
Tumblr media
Why I actually ship Kirk/Spock:
Mutual support, respect, admiration, trust, love, slow burn, best friend turned love of your life, ultimate sacrifice, the depth of loyalty, being the most important to each other, showing our differences and vulnerabilities are strengths instead of weaknesses, depending on others isn't wrong, willingness to connect, "let me help" . . .
Tumblr media
Soulmates, t'hy'la, found family, lgbt+ representation, domestic bliss at least for a few years for two people who really f**in' earned it . . .
Both guys not ending up canonically sad and lonely as they grow older bc they never really "settle” long term with anyone else besides each other.
Like what did you genuinely want us to do with that, like -- our boys deserve to be happy and they mutually love each other so much.
Heck yeah, I love the idea of the two of them growing older together while still being in love and best friends.
Having adventures, solving problems and writing history all over the universe together.
Having a stellar time doing it because being next to each other is their favourite place to be; on a Starship, being the best team ever. It's beautiful.
Tumblr media
Another very important reason why this fandom and K/S has been a safe place to land for me as a member of LGBT+:
My connection to Star Trek started through my family, but I loved it because it offered me a glimpse at the kind of world that I'd like to live in; more accurately, the world I was desperate to live in.
The world I was raised in was bitterly cruel and violent to LGBT+ folks like myself. I visited far too many friends in the ICU, unrecognizably beaten after a gay hate crime, than I ever should have had to --  especially in my young life before the age of 20. Those are images and ugly moments burned into my memory that will haunt me until I die. People talk about how pro-LGBT things are these days, and sure, things are certainly better; but I think too many people have swiftly forgotten how dire things were for us even those short years ago, even now.
Gene Roddenberry did something for me at that time when I was so bitterly lonely, conflicted about identity, and self-resentful in my life; I had genuinely considered ending it more than once. But TMP novel did something so huge for me back then when I was so turbulent and alone in the tiniest way possible.
I read TMP novel in high school; actually reading something that even remotely resembled a bisexual character when I first read this line from Jim Kirk in TMP novel was such a game changer for me at that time:
Tumblr media
That small sentence might be next to nothing for some people, but that was huge for me. So huge that I don't think Gene Roddenberry might have ever considered how big that it could be for some isolated, lonely kid out there reading it.
I cried my heart out in my room stuck on that page when I first read it, because it really shook my soul. It was proof that at some point in time, someone out there had been brave enough to express the kind of feelings that I so fiercely hid in my mind.
That might sound really pathetic to the people reading this, but you have to understand how positively starved a person can be for commiseration or empathy when you are on the outside looking in constantly.
It is part of why I have always related to Spock so fiercely; that sense of belonging nowhere, being "weird", of not quite fitting in or meeting expectations -- and constantly being reminded of it.
All those moments growing up when you look around yourself seeking validation as a child and teen, looking for like minded people or kin; I looked around and found myself reflected literally nowhere.
It's like that metaphorical hand suspended in the air, waiting for a high five, and not one single, solitary person meets you halfway. Not one crumb of validation.
Then everyone around you makes you feel like you're weird and wrong and malfunctioning and not supposed to think that way and just be quiet and don't talk about it ever. Just be "normal."
I was so damn lonely. And scared.
Nobody around me thought or felt like me. I was raised in a strict Pentecost upbringing. Everything to do with LGBT+ was unequivocally off the table.
If I tried to even tentatively broach the subject of bisexuality with folks, most people would respond with revulsion; as if it were some perverted, weird sex kink. When like everybody else, I simply hoped to be loved someday for exactly who I was. Plain and simple.
I was a closeted bisexual teen living in the bible belt. It was a sheltered, oppressive existence for anyone, but especially for someone who identified as LGBT+.
Sad as it might be, this was the closest thing I'd ever gotten in my life thus far to bisexual representation or validation. It was the first example I remember seeing in any of the stories that I loved growing up. Up to that point, I hadn't heard or seen anyone else in the world express exactly how I felt inside anywhere. Until James T. Kirk.
Tumblr media
So forgive me if I somehow hurt or upset other fans when I read it through my own lens in my desperation to feel seen or understood. What other way can we look at the world and it's many stories, after all, other than through our own eyes?
To be quite frank, those few little ambiguous words from Jim Kirk in that footnote of that dusty old 1979 1st edition Star Trek: The Motion Picture novel that I still have on my bookshelf all these years later?
That tiny little sentence absolutely rocked my bisexual f**king world in high school.
That one tiny sentence meant so much to me. I re-read that page so many times. I even stuck a bookmark in the page and I’d pop it open after yet another long, shitty day of being harassed, chased, or called a "f@g".
Call it pathetic, but I’d feel a little sear of camaraderie in my angry, lonely existence. 'At least Jim Kirk has my back, f**k those guys". And it made me feel a tiny bit less alone in this giant universe.
I can still recite it word for word. I used to read it over and over again, just to have that giddy feeling in my heart of: "Oh God, what a relief. There it is. There I am. Someone else out there wrote down exactly how I feel inside. It's right there in this book. It's a real thing that exists somewhere outside my head."
For the first time in my life, I saw something even remotely like myself represented somewhere, and I found that in Jim Kirk.
Tumblr media
Some people might call that "a reach".
By all means, go ahead.
But do that bearing in mind the kind of reality that people like myself contended with when you get “upset” that we might be “queer washing” your character by pushing for representation:
- Homosexuality was listed as a mental illness in the DSM5 until 1974.
- Anti-sodomy laws were not considered unconstitutional until 2003 in the US (as in you could legally get arrested/charged for engaging in homosexual acts up to that time).
- The Netherlands was the 1st country to legalize gay marriage and that was only as recently as 2001. Canada legalized gay marriage in 2005. The US did not legalize gay marriage until 2015 and they are currently gunning to take that right away again.
*It is important to note that the definition of spouse only included same-sex partners only starting in 2013; that means that if a person was dying in the ICU, you were prohibited from visiting them unless you were legal family. For decades right up until 2013, your right to visit your lover if either of you were on your deathbed was revoked on the basis that you were not married -- and that right was not even offered to LGBT+ folks till 2001.*
So, yeah.
Maybe it is "a reach" through your privileged lens, having all the representation in the world at your disposal if you identify as straight - I mean, God forbid we might like a scattered one or two on our team.
But it is also very hard to secure legitimate representation when the society and culture you grow up in tells you that you should not exist in the first place.
Not only demands that you shouldn't exist, but legally persecutes you for it or forces you into cruel, inhuman religious conversion therapy simply for existing. For trying to love someone else honestly.
So pardon me for being absolutely starved for even the slightest hint of a vapour that resembled representation during a time period when I was asked (moreso ordered) not to exist and barely wanted to as a product of it.
God forbid that my seeing potential bisexuality in Jim Kirk might actually put you off of your Star Trek chowder because "eeeewww, bisexual Jim" . . . how very selfish of me. /s
But sure . . . y'know.

Spock's World was the first Star Trek book I ever bought back in HS when it came out . At some point in the 2010's my oldest got entranced the Young Wizard's series, and he read every book that was out and so did I. Fast forward a few more years and I see you on Tumblr, go 'Oh she wrote Spock's World let me follow' only to find out you *also* wrote one of the boy's favorite series and I had no clue. I literally went and checked his bookshelf to make sure. You hooked two generations of readers :)
First of all: thank you! x2. I'm glad what I was writing was working for you both, into whichever category it might fall. :)
And second: This an interesting example of a (very minor) cross I bear, and get reminded of more or less every day. :) For a number of reasons that have to do with the passage of considerable time and the all-over-the-place nature of my writing schedule in the 80s and 90s and early-00s, my readerships are extremely fragmented (or I guess "silo'd" might be the jargon we'd use these days). And of course in the beginning of that period, there being no unified way to tell people what you were doing except (eventually) through websites that they might never find, there was no straightforward way to get the word out about new work that was happening in different genres.
As a result, the Trek fans tend not to know about my other SF and fantasy writing. A lot of the Young Wizards fans have no knowledge of all the stuff I wrote for Trek (a work-by-work listing is here). Relatively few of the fans in either of those camps know about the Middle Kingdoms series that began with some of my earliest work. And very few of any of them seem to know about all the assorted film and TV work.
(helpless laughter) ...This is why my website looks more like some kind of peculiar encyclopedia than anything else. I'm just trying to tell people, "Look, I'm glad you like this stuff I've done... maybe you might like this other stuff, too?" ...Because no one's going to find out until someone suggests it.
Anyway, for those who might be curious, here are:
All my novels
All my shorter fiction
My comics and graphic-novel work
All my TV and film work that I've got around to adding to the site (it's a work in progress...) and my listing at IMDb
And beyond that, all I can do is post here (and on Twitter and various other places) when new things come out. ...You might also have a look at @petermorwood's and my ebook store, Ebooks Direct: there are things of mine there that you won't find anywhere else.
Meanwhile, thanks for letting me know that you've both liked what you've found so far. I enjoy being multigenerational, and I intend to stay that way. :)

About canon or not canon
This is time around I am talking about fandom issues, not Miguel's theory, so is okay if you want to scroll past this.
I had mentioned this off-hand before in other post, but I feel is always good to do some reminders, specially since I had gotten past a certain number of followers, and the last time I mentioned this I feel it was awhile ago.
I do not care what about canon or canon ships when is about fandom works.
I feel I need to make this clear because I had seen a few "How people could like X ship?! It doesn't make any sense!"
My answer? It doesn't matter, this is about having fun.
I don't know how many people actually know this but I RARELY ship canon ships, this has been happening more as of recently but for the most part I had shipped niche ships or even crack ones.
I consider that the best fic I had ever done, is for a ship that is so minuscule there is only 4 fics in ao3, and 2 of those are mine. And believe me, it makes perfect sense, those characters work together in my head and few others.
But fandom has zero to do with canon; fun story guy did you know the first type of fandom as we know it, was shipper of Spock x Captain Kirk of Star Trek? They would have zines with fics, they will hold reunions to talk about the characters, draw comics about it; the creators and the actors even KNEW about this!
But that ship was never canon, and even if people saw potential in it; it doesn't matter. Fandom is to have fun, not to try to limit how people create.
By the way, if you think this take is weird for the type of content I make, let me say it this way: I think people writing about X ship or writing a character in Y way is okay; I can understand sometimes it can feel frustrating and I am not saying you have to like it.
Everyone had been frustrated for that one story they read where the character they love is completely out of character and you want to rage quit; and I get it, I had gone to my friends to rant sometimes about things like that.
Because let's remember, did this person write this story for me, or did this person write the story this way because it thought the idea of X character doing something in specific sounds like fun for them?
I think we all know the answer.
So no, I can get being frustrated, and that's fine and natural, but one thing is how you behave with a few friends in private while talking about petty things; vs trying to scream in a public place where people, including that person, can see.
You are entitled to your own opinion, in your own space, specially when it wasn't asked. Is not hard.
"Then why you do stupidly long essays about what is happening in the movie?"
Because there is a different of what I write in my fic vs what is happening in the canon story!
Because canon and fanon aren't the same thing! And is much better that way.
Canon cannot be as weird or corny or dumb at times, because it cannot be everything people want; so is nice to have people going crazy with wild ideas. And fanon shouldn't limit itself because is about being creative and seeing how far the human imagination can go.
I think is important remember what happened in canon because I had seen literal people have interpretations of a character (which is fine and dandy,) and then try to say is canon and people who disagree are haters (NOPE.)
I like discussing what the hell is going down the movie because I love the canon material and exploring those topics is fun for me, and because I want to have a way to say "I believe this is what went down and here is my reasons for it." Maybe is the ADHD or maybe is the trauma but I like to be able to justify my response.
But I also recognize when something is totally not canon and I am just exploring ideas. I also like to talk about how things could had been handle better in canon; (because a teen who is just starting doing fanfics should be as cringe as they want, but when the source material is fucking up a story then this is an entirely different story.) That's fun for me too.
Sorry this got so long, it was suppose to be a short message, but like I say, I like to be able to justify my response.

“Jim.”
The man stepped down from the transporter pad, and the Captain moved toward him, embracing him in his arms with a pleased, “Bones.”
Spock clasped his hands behind his back, straightening. The hug lasted eight seconds. It seemed a bit excessive.
When the Captain told him that the new ship’s surgeon was his personal friend for many years, Spock’s first thought was to tell him that he considered it a bad idea. Surrounding oneself with close friends on a mission where anything could happen, where their lives were in danger every day, did not seem very logical. He said nothing and hoped the doctor’s fate would not follow the one of Gary Mitchell, which hurt the Captain deeply.
-
“Captain. The way you let Doctor McCoy act toward you is disrespectful and improper,” Spock said two weeks later during one of their chess matches.
The Captain blinked at him. “Improper?”
“He questions your authority, never addresses you properly, and you yourself allow it with the use of the overfamiliar moniker.”
The Captain continued watching him with a baffled expression, mouthing “overfamiliar moniker”.
“Furthermore, the crew started to question the nature of your relationship.”
“And we can’t have that, can we, Mister Spock?”
Spock understood the words as humorous, but the Captain’s eyes weren’t laughing.
-
The next time Doctor McCoy visited the bridge, the Captain greeted him with, “Hey, Doc.”
It felt somewhat mocking, and Spock could not shake off the impression that McCoy was glaring at Spock’s back, trying to burn a hole there.
He refused to turn around.
-
“Jim, they won’t hurt the doctor.”
The Captain stopped pacing. “I thought you said the use of my first name was improper and disrespectful.”
“I did not say that… exactly.”
“You sound like McCoy now.”
“There is no reason to be insulting, Captain.”
The Captain sighed. “Look, Spock. I don’t know what your problem with McCoy is…”
“There is no problem, sir. The Doctor’s behavior simply does not fit a Starfleet vessel and can cause distraction.”
“Did it cause a distraction?”
“Not yet,” Spock conceded.
“When…” The Captain cleared his throat. “When McCoy comes back, the next time he’s on the bridge, watch the crew, Mister Spock.”
-
Spock did as told.
McCoy did not only speak to the Captain. He’d stop at Lieutenant Uhura’s panel to talk to her, leaving her smiling. He’d ask Lieutenant Sulu about one of his many hobbies. He’d talk to everyone, addressing all of them by their names, leaving them relaxed and more open to joking with each other during the long voyages from one place to another that humans tended to find tedious and tiring.
It reminded him of Captain Pike, who’d take that role on himself. Perhaps the last year and two months at Kirk’s side made him forget something important.
-
McCoy would talk to everyone but Spock.
-
“Any time you can bluff me, Doctor!”
Spock turned toward the captain’s chair. The whole bridge was looking at Kirk in confusion and bewilderment. Spock wasn’t petty enough to remind the captain that this was what he’d meant when he talked about distractions.
He could tell the Captain understood anyway.
And to Spock’s surprise, so did McCoy. His demeanor deflated, and he oozed embarrassment, moving away from the chair, subdued, his hands curled into fists.
And yet, Kirk and McCoy’s uncommon disagreement turned out not to be a distraction at all. Somehow, it gave the Captain an idea. An absurd, illogical idea. But as Spock learned during his time serving with Kirk, sometimes it took such an idea to get them out of a predicament.
“However, it was well played,” Spock acknowledged, and in order to further lighten the mood on the bridge, he continued, “I regret not having learned more about this Balok. In some manner, he was reminiscent of my father.”
“Then may heaven have helped your mother,” Scott quipped.
“Quite the contrary. She considered herself a very fortunate Earth woman.”
-
Perhaps he did judge the nature of Kirk and McCoy’s friendship wrong, he thought as he watched McCoy step close to Kirk and touch his arm in apology.
“Doc… sorry,” Kirk said, and Spock wondered if the moniker “Bones” would ever make a reappearance.
-
When McCoy invited him for a group poker a few days later, Spock did not refuse.
He wisely didn’t react after Kirk kept calling McCoy “Bones” throughout the game. After the fifth time, he caught McCoy’s exasperated look.
Maybe the two of them could find an understanding.

I know it's been lost in the many, many annoying years of ST writers deciding Vulcans are bad and contemptible for having what amounts to just really visible cultural differences from humanity, but I really like how... Culturally Vulcan Spock is.
His colleagues have like a fixation on his mother's heritage but... he grew up culturally Vulcan on Vulcan and his human mother all but states in Babel that she's basically assimilated into Vulcan culture because she agrees with its ethos. In all of TOS Spock considers himself Vulcan.
He's... very well adjusted and settled in so he is, he's a guy who sacked off the VSA to join a pseudo-military against the wishes of his pacifist dad and on the ship he plays Vulcan musical instruments with his human colleagues, and keeps a room full of Vulcan cultural artefacts that presumably remind him from home. (I get that this is half-retconned in the movies - most explicitly in ST V 🙄 - and also pretty inconsistently written in TOS but it's still there!)
Idk it's kind of sad to me that the Vulcans are literally the innovators of IDIC and they've been flanderized into these isolationist bigots because the stoicism/pacifist vibes can be kind of confused and off-putting to people.
Like. List of Vulcans we actually meet in TOS:
Spock
Spock's dad, ambassador to Earth, married to a human in some weird 60s sitcom couple dynamic, in-text reason he is estranged from his half human son is literally stated outright as being because he thinks Starfleet is too militaristic and he's a pacifist - like most Vulcans.
T'Pring - Spock's fiancée/wife, breaks up with him because it seems like too much of a hassle to be married to a celebrity, never seems to have any issue with his parentage, clearly thinks he's Vulcan since she divorces him via Vulcan ritual (logical, fight to the death) and not Human ritual (illogical, loopholes/contacting your local divorce lawyer)
Stonn - has two lines, neither of them are about Spock.
T'Pau - kind of maybe says something bigoted ("they say thy Vulcan blood is thin"), but then pulls strings to get the Enterprise off the hook for disobeying orders at the end of the episode, presumably as a favour to Spock, who she knows is going through a rough time, or out of respect for Not-Really-Dead Jim.
Surak - from a war torn civilisation five hundred years ago, still less bigoted towards other species than McCoy lmao
I might be so wrong about this but idk I just like Spock's room full of unabashed Vulcan shit, and I think ST has ignored and wasted opportunities for interesting stories bc they're kind of obsessed with deconstruction of everything about TOS/the ST universe to the detriment of anything else including the actual original ethos of Starfleet.

DOTF PT 5/4?☺️
I love the Wavett/Remnicore art, but I dropped both planets from my version of DOTF. The campfire reminds me of one of my fav scenes in Star Trek V w/ Kirk, Spock, and Bones singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”. It would’ve been nice to see a moment like that for our heroes, but it just eats up time in the story and Rey needed to get to Bonadan. Rey lifting the Falcon out of the ice was a nice nod as well(DEF better than the one in TROS). lDK if Trevorrow was just so “ride or die” for Damerey that he was willing to get fired for it or LF just didn’t tell him that Reylo was a thing(I thought Rian made it abundantly clear), but it’s a BIG problem(so stupid to me). If he could’ve got over that I think he would’ve figured things out. When you put Poe with Finn/Rose everything changes for the better! It was cockblocking the real story. I feel like Bonadan is the pivotal moment for Rey to turn into Dark Rey when she kills the Knight of Ren w/ force lightning(and later tempted further by The Son on Mortis). It was also the most delicious opportunity to use another force bond between Rey/Ben where he projects himself across the galaxy to help his girl. The Tor Vallum/Vader stuff looks cool too, but Kylo didn’t need to become more evil. He needed to return to the light(Ben Solo). Also, the Eye of Webbish Bog/Mustafar serves the same purpose. DOTF could’ve been a meal! JJerrio just chewed it up and spit it back out. It needed a real cook to add the proper spices and it would’ve tasted better than TROS. I’m convinced that Bob Iger was the biggest reason the last Skywalker film was ultimately fucked. He wanted it under his belt before he retired😒…
