17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
Descent started as a much different story, all the way back in 2010. It was a spy story, it was a secret school for mutants at one point, it was that plus a spy story, and sometime in 2016 the overall concept of the modern Veda, the setting, came into place. Even then, the series wasn't what it is now. While most iterations of TMI focused on Nat, the first iteration in the city focused on June Holiday, one of the other Alphas.
This is also the story where Taryn Radcliffe came to be, but she changed a great deal over the last six years as well.
It's only been over the last few years that Nat's even stopped being a teenager. But the more I focused on Nat's conflict, the older I wanted them to be, and the older I needed their supporting cast to be in order for them to be as established as they needed to be.
What won't make it into the text? How about the fact that I wrote a 20 page plus cited research essay on the history of Metahumans and how they work for my own benefit. Which includes me making up a bunch of fake scientists, fake research journals, and citing them properly in APA. It was amazing. Easily my favourite experience in TMI so far.
18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end.
Actually, you know what? Lemme show you a piece from part of Descent that doesn't exist anymore - something that's super different from the current draft.
From thunderstorm to gray drizzle, the rain dissipated. Instead of the torrent that Nat had expected, they were greeted with a splattering of rain that dribbled onto their skin like the drool of some heaven-bound dog. Or maybe the disdainful spit of God.
Despite that, they closed their eyes and tilted back their head, letting the heat of the summer night, the dampness of the warm, sticky rain, and the crisp, bitter scent that the breeze carried, wash over them. The scent of saline, medical wipes, and metal left their body, changing to the bitterness of ozone and the tang of blood.
The pain that thrummed through their body alleviated in the face of freedom.
Nat took a deep breath, held it, and let it out, allowing their awareness to spread out into the area around them. Cars, lights, phones, computers. The power grid of the district. A nearby person with a watch. Electricity crackled across their right hand and their mangled, bloodied, and broken left hand, danced up their arms, and tangled itself into the short, filthy strands of their dark hair.
White-gold electricity, warmer than anything in the city, danced across the dark expanse of their skin and the tattered remnants of their bloodstained clothes.
This was the opening of Descent when it was a fractured timeline story that focused on a much further part of Nat's journey than I am now. Mostly, this was me aiming for atmosphere and tone, as well as enough of Nat's character to keep you going. It's not perfect, and it definitely doesn't fit who they are at the start anymore, but I love this scene, and generally this version of Descent, a lot, because it was so different and experimental.
Every time I've restarted TMI I've started it somewhere else. For a long time, I was stuck on the idea of police interrogation, of a meeting, or of some sort of crime to open the story. The more I explored the idea, the more I didn't think it worked. I think I've actually posted two? Unfinished versions of Descent online and this was one of them. I wanted this version to really capture the image of the brutality Nat is willing to endure for the things they love and need. And of the horrors of the city. And I wanted it to build intrigue.
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
My first major writing project started in 2008 and it was a silly project that was very much self-insert and friend-fiction (to quote Bob's Burgers) and it was so much fun and looking back on it I love seeing what was important to me back then. Connection, unity, but also image and control. I was so caught up in what other people thought of me and it shows deeply in everything from back then.
And you know, it's funny -- I'm still writing about a big, sprawling city with lots of wacky shit and lore, but it's very, VERY different.
32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?
"You need water to live. Whether it's rain filling your well or you have to get down and dig. You need water to live."
It's from a god damn Tumblr post I can never find and it haunts me. I think about it all the time. I have an entire RWBY longfic centred around it, thematically. I just. It never stops living in my head.
37. If you were to be remembered only by the words you’ve put on the page, what would future historians think of you?
Probably that I hate cops and the government, that I think superpowers are cool, that I was very, very queer, and very, very autistic.

One gets sick in December and the rest drop like flies until March. 1-A, now living in the dorms, manage to avoid it for a while.
