Yume no ginga (Labyrinth of Dreams) (Gakuryū Ishii, 1997)
This is one of the most dreamlike movies I’ve ever seen. I really loved it. I don’t really have any analysis or interpretation of it. It’s just 90 ethereal minutes of stunningly beautiful faces, lovely music, misty landscapes, and very nicely paced surrealism. Not to denigrate the substance of the film - there is a compelling story and very good acting. I just mean that the mood that is established is stunning, immersive, and not really like any other film I’ve seen. Highly recommended.
