Reached Locke & Key: Clockworks #4 and I have to say the Riffel Rule is the perfect example of an unnecessary explanation that still is quite cool and well implemented.
Like, the whole "grown ups can't remember magic" is left open in the Netflix Series, we and the characters never learn why it happens and we're cool with that. Why it happens doesn't really matters as we and the characters still understand it happens, when it happens and how it happens, thus they can deal with it.
In the series, that's basically a law that we promptly accept as the whole thing is magic.
Then in the comics, we do have an explanation that's really simple and yet brings a really cool addition to the whole backstory as highlights the point: every Locke who created a key was their own person and had their own goals. Some were selfless, some wanted little and simple, some were cautious about what they wished, some were more petty, some were selfish, but they all had a goal and the keys were created solely to fulfill said goal, just like that...
The series proves we didn't need an explanation to this, but the comics used it to create an interesting plot point about the history of the Key House, the Locke lineage and the magic keys...
Idk... I just couldn't stop thinking about it...

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 Slow Change (thesurefireway) - 66K, steddie canon divergent - Eddie's life and his relationship with Steve after his 5-month stint in jail before the innocent verdict in his trial
😊 The Crime at Black Dudley (Albert Campion Mystery #1) (Margery Allingham, author; David Thorpe, narrator) - In a cozy/golden age mystery mood and she's the Queen of Crime I have read least. I wish there were more of hers on audiobook
😊 The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson) - read via Jekyll & Hyde Weekly
🥰 Call My Number (and Call Me Yours) (novacorpsrecruit) - 53K, Steddie AU - both single dads, EMT!Steve & dispatcher!Eddie - very cute
😊 The Case of the Canterfell Codicil (Anty Boisjoly Mysteries #1) (PJ Fitzsimmons, author; Tim Bruce, narrator) - So straight in the blurb for this book it says "The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cosy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse. The result, for those familiar with Wodehouse or Jerome K Jerome and Ruth Rendell or Dorothy L Sayers, is either an inexcusable offence to several beloved canons, or a hilarious, fast-paced, manor house murder mystery." It's a fairly mediocre imitation to be honest but not so terrible as to be unreadable, and it raced along nicely; ultimately I found it entertaining enough. Given the length and the price (free), I can see myself reading a few more, esp when I get into that 'i'm out of podcasts and books i really want but need something for the love of fuck' place.
😊 The King's Delight (Tales of Lilleforth Book 1) (Sarah Honey) - a light & fluffy, very mildly kinky fantasy romance
💖💖 +357K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
The Long Dark Bath-Time of the Soul (spqr) - Knives out universe: Benoit Blanc/Phillip, 7K - a hilarious possible backstory for phillip's wealth
help to make the season bright (its_tortle) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 20K - fluffy & warm seasonal fic
The future's open wide (rainbow_nerds) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 4.7K - a lovely little fic with some closure for tommy hagan
Nothing Hurts (Like Your Mouth) (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 4.1K - werewolf steve & vamp eddie - some extremely hot monsterfucking. I love a prehensile tail!
Not Fade Away (A Cover) (dorcas_gustine) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 37K - great characterizations, great story, fucking HILARIOUS
Hallmark-Adjacent (Moorishflower) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 25K - a fun, modern AU with each of them as the jilted guy in a hallmark movie, having glorious sex and a soulmate connection on a train and then some hallmark-y moments of their own
the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you (greatunironic) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 34K - reread of this amazing & formative-for-the-fandom fic; still amazing

Watching Locke and Key. I’m currently on episode 5 these are my thoughts.
Kinsey is not a good person and I don’t k ow if it’s somehow because of the lack of fear or what. What I do know is that she seemingly has no moral compass. And Scot Cavendish is to good for her. Unless he he can make her better, then maybe.
Tyler is giving Scott-I’m-the-oldest-and-I-need-to-protect-my-family-and-I-have-daddy-issues-Summers vibes. I feel for him. Also, way to go with the anger issues pal. It sucks, I know. So far the worst thing he’s done by far in my book (after lying and saying he slept with that one girl) is the whole I’m going to throw books into my mind to learn stuff to impress Jackie thing. I mean, I do think it would be cool to just have knowledge. Like, that sounds great. But the whole thing (and the subsequent scene) was very painful and iffy.
Bode. Poor Bode. If I were at that age I’d probably just think it’s cool and love and angst and lowkey emotional whump. But no. I’m 21 and all I see is a kid who first had his dad murdered and didn’t know if he would make it out alive that is being terrorized by an evil….person. Whatever she is. If she is an even a she. It seems like she could be part Lucas? Or maybe absorbed some of Lucas? At least that’s the impression I got when Ellie visited the well house. Anyway, yeah, Bode. He felt like he was alone in the key situation. And even though he technically wasn’t he still felt all the responsibility and still had his life and the lives of his family threatened by something unknown that already tried to kill his mom once. And while Tyler finally understands the full gravity of the situation due to the whole fire incident Kinsey seemingly doesn’t care. Or rather, she’s not aware. When she got rid of her fear the next episode very much felt like the “Accepting Anxiety” Sanders Sides video she has yet to realize that maybe it was a bad decision. And the fact that she doesn’t have fear anymore definitely plays a factor in that. But shouldn’t she at least realize it’s dangerous? Shouldn’t she know logically that she should be a bit scared? So yeah, it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. I asked my sibling if Kinsey has morals and they said yes but only a little bit. I don’t know if my sibling was watched past season 1 but if they have then that doesn’t bode all that well. But I’m hoping that the Kinsey storyline is done well. I’ll just have to wait and see.
But yeah, back to Bode. The poor kid brought a hammer to school. And he’s drawing out maps and possibly battle plans for when Echo comes back. (It would be kinda cool if when Sam Lesser shows up something Bode planned or set up takes care of the situation even though he didnt know it was Sam Lesser who was going to attack.
And there’s Duncan. I can’t not mention Duncan. The fact that Aaron Ashmpre is in this show is part of the reason I decided to watch it in the first place. Anyway, Duncan not knowing about the keys and stuff, not really knowing what Bode is talking about was sad but expected. I think he’s going to unlock a memory or something about the Key House and then go “Oh shit”. I mean, there’s a reason Rendell left. There’s a reason practically everyone in Rendell’s group of old friends is dead. There’s a reason Duncan hates that house almost as much as his brother did. So yeah, it’ll be interesting. And when Bode told Duncan that it’s not his fault he doesn’t remember and it’s okay and hugged him. Oof. There is so much on poor Bode’s shoulder and he is terrified. I mean, he brought a hammer to school and I can understand exactly why that was actually a good idea. Poor kid. Seriously, Bode is a child and out of everyone in the show he is one of the ones with the most common sense.
Also Ellie. I don’t know all of what’s going on with her but I like her and the actress does a really good job.
Nina. So obviously some part of her was left back in the mirror place. I hope she gets it back and figures it out. Her own subtle investigation and all that is great. I need to go otherwise I’d talk about her more but yeah I like that well the kids are trying to handle the keys she doesn’t know about them and is looking into the Omega symbol and Rendell’s past and it both the same type of thing as the kids deal with but also something completely different.
Also, quick shoutout to the English teacher. I don’t remember his name because every time I see him in my head he is Rufus from supernatural. And there’s already a Rufus on the show. So yeah, I’ll have to work harder on remembering his name is not actually Rufus. I was very confused when Bode mentioned him b cause Bode shouldn’t even know who he is. I had to like, pause for a second and rewind. On one hand I feel like an idiot. On the other hand it’s Rufus from supernatural and he seems happy.

Head Key
The key was created by Benjamin during the Revolutionary War. His sister, Miranda used this key to fill her head with knowledge on how to fight and kill, as well as removing her fear.
Rendell Locke threw the Head key into keyholes fountain. Decades it was rediscovered by his son Bode Locke.
Dodge then later steals the key and uses it to enter into Erin's mind in order yo find the omega key. The key is subsequently found by Rufus who returns it over to his mother.
Tyler leaves on a road trip and gives Kinsey the Head Key. Bode later uses it to show his mother some of her happiest memories with his father.
Uses: The Head Key allows the user to open someones head os that thoughts and memories can be inserted or removed.

Locke and Key (2020) The Keepers of the Keys
S1E4
Having literally murdered and buried her own anger, Kinsey becomes a new girl, albeit a little too direct and insensitive. Initially alarmed, Tyler is impressed and uses the Head Key to put knowledge in his head to woo Jackie. With Echo at large with the Anywhere Key, Bode mounts a defense using Double Bubble in all the Key House keyholes. With Ellie's help, Nina unseals Rendell's hidden ping pong room.

And that's Locke & Key finished.
I remember really, really enjoying the first season, to the point where I preferred it over the comics, since they covered so much stuff in such a short space of time. It was like three or four volumes of the comic in 10 episodes.
But then they kind of ran out of material. The comics focus a lot on the ancestral Lockes, and the show didn't want to delve into that, so a lot of the second and third seasons felt like they were just playing for time.
Season 2 especially didn't seem to know where it was going, and they dragged the whole Gabe-Is-Dodge thing out far too long. The final episodes were really good though, the fight in the crumbling house was amazing.
But then Season 3 fell into the same trap. It introduced Gideon, and then he was just kind of...there. The fact that the last five or so episodes all take place over the same day just goes to show that they had a conclusion in mind, but needed to fill a certain number of episodes to get to it. And then of course they have to bring Dodge back again because they didn't know what else to do.
I did enjoy it overall - the last few scenes where everything wrapped up were sweet, and the time hop back to see Rendell did make me tear up, but I do think there were pacing problems for most of the series' run.

Locke and Key comics
Locke & Key is an American comic book series written by Joe Hill, illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez, and published by IDW Publishing.
During the American Revolution, a group of Rebels hiding beneath the future Keyhouse discover a portal to another dimension, filled with demons who can mesmerize anyone that sees them and possess them through touch. However, when the demons attempt to enter the real world they are transformed into "whispering" iron which Benjamin Locke forges into a variety of magical keys, including the Omega Key, which seals the entrance to the dimension. The magic of the Keyhouse gradually evolves over the years, the occupants use the keys in their high school years decide to open the black door to the other dimension with the Omega key and try and trick a demon to enter the real world so they can make more keys but one of them called Dodge becomes possessed by a demon, he tries to kill his friends but ends up being killed by a friend called Rendell.
Many years later Dodge's spirit enters the real world through a well under the Keyhouse and manages to get an abused boy called Sam to help him attack the Locke's and kill Rendell, looking for the Omega key and the Anywhere key which can free Dodge from the well. After the gruesome murder of their father the Locke kids and their mother move into the Keyhouse and start unlocking it's secrets.

I loved the TV series on Netflix, it was great how the past and present was entwined throughout the series and how the history of the Locke's came together. I loved the design of each key and what they did.
My favourite was the Everywhere key which could unlock any door to a shop, a different country or a beach. You could go anywhere you wanted to go. I also liked the Snow Globe key as we don't get much snow and I would use that a lot. The scariest key was the mirror key, when used in a mirror the key opens a dimension called The Prison of the self, the reflection beckons you in and it is very difficult to get out of.
