Fuck Netflix and fuck everyone who fought against this show.

First Kill was set up to fail right out of the gates.

It was a diverse show streamed on a platform that is proudly anti-diversity, it got zero promotion or advertisement from said platform, it had fans who were sabotaging viewership before the show had even aired, and it was released at the same time as big shows with pre-existing bases like Stranger Things and Umbrella Academy.

And somehow, despite all that, First Kill outsold. It swept the competition of their feet. It got more buzz than anyone could've anticipated.

Which is exactly what makes Netflix so fucking stupid for trying to cite numbers as the reason for the abrupt cancellation. Especially when the numbers are public, have been public since the series' debut, and have been praised the entire time.

And it's scary that they're getting so comfortable with lying when the actual numbers are right in front of our faces. They're not announcing these cancellations with "heavy hearts" anymore. They've dropped the act of caring, and it's become more obvious than ever that it's because they don't think they even have to pretend to care about diversity anymore.

And they're right. The film industry has once again become a climate where they feeling comfortable exposing their bigotry to everyone, knowing there's nothing anyone can do and that they can just keep doing it.

We've seen the pattern. Batwoman, Legends, Legacies, Motherland: Fort Salem, The Wilds, now First Kill. I know there's many I've missed in that list. That's the worst part. Networks are not even disguising their intentions anymore.

First Kill's not the first and it won't be the last, but I really fucking hope it can be the loudest.

I just want to say how much I love the way we meet Juliette in First Kill.

She is having dreams about making out with Cal. Heavily. This is literally the first moments of the show. Julliette's intense makeout dream with Cal to whom she hasn't yet spoken a word. The dream escalates with imagery symbolic of sex between two women and orgasms, blood, Juliette turned, a bloody messy monster, Cal screaming, blood, fangs... A zoom in on Juliette processing the dream in a REM cycle.

Then she is startled out of the dream and goes about her day.

That's how we meet Juliette.

We learn instantly that she is haunted by her own legacy, very much sapphic and into Cal. And that she struggles with the temptation and fear of biting the girl she likes, in her dreams.

That is good character building from the start. This show is actually very well written and if I have to, I will die on this hill.

First Kill should be renewed for more than two seasons honestly. Give it the chance to become a show sprawling multiple seasons. It's so well-written. The characters are fascinating and flawed. It's not just because it's queer. But queer and Black is representation is a large part of it. Let us take up space.
