They look out at the same time to the sky washed with golden-pink hues, lightened significantly in the short amount of time since they arrived. Though they’ve shared many sunsets, most of them on this very rooftop, Reki can’t recall a single sunrise.

Reki hopes that’s why something about this feels final, like Langa is about to change their lives somehow.

Bright.

The bright light of the computer hurt Langa’s aching eyes as he struggled through his Japanese homework.

The strokes of the kanji blurred together into incomprehensible shapes as he tried to read them, and he just wanted to finally go to bed.

Groaning, he pulled away from his desk and grabbed his phone, checking the time.

23:46. Shit.

His assignment was due in 14 minutes and he had barely gotten anything done.

Sniffing back tears, Langa went back to his keyboard and began to read the words.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Langa could tell he was about to spiral, and grabbed one of his fidget toys to try and keep himself grounded.

It didn’t matter. Most of the words on his screen still looked more like scribbles than actual words.

Tears spilled down Langa’s cheeks. He needed to pass this class to graduate and therefore make it in life, but how could he do that when he was struggling to read Japanese?

He grabbed his phone, about to call Reki, before hesitating.

Surely Reki was asleep. Langa didn’t want to bother him, as Reki had also been just as stressed between S and school.

Langa wiped his eyes, considering asking his teacher for an extension, when his phone rang.

Glancing at the caller ID, he noticed it was Reki.

Flailing in his seat, he grabbed his phone and immediately picked up. “Reki!”

“Sorry I couldn’t sleep,” Reki blurted. “Wait, I thought you would be asleep by now.”

Langa let out a watery laugh. “Yeah, me too.”

Reki went silent on the other end. “Langa have you been crying?”

“No…” Langa said, sniffing.

“Yes you have been! Are you okay? What’s wrong? Do you want me to come over-“

“-No it’s fine,” Langa chuckled, moving the phone to his other hand. “I was just doing the Japanese assignment and couldn’t read it, so then I got stressed thinking how I wouldn’t graduate if I couldn’t pass this class just because I can’t fucking read.”

Reki stayed silent during Langa’s mini-rant.

“My love, you’re exhausted aren’t you?”

Langa felt like he might cry again. “Yeah, I am.”

“Go to bed. I’ll come over tomorrow and I’ll help you with the assignment. I doubt she’ll care if it's turned in a day late. Besides, it’s due in three minutes, I don’t think you’ll get it done tonight,” Reki chucked.

Langa lightly laughed, the sound making Reki’s heart flutter. “Okay I’ll rest. Thanks, babe.”

“Of course,” Reki replied. “Do you want me to stay on the phone until you fall asleep?”

Langa nodded before realizing that Reki couldn’t see him. “That would be great, love.”

Langa layed down, content with the plan for the assignment, and listened to Reki hum softly through the phone.

He fell asleep rather quickly that night.
