Rivers in the Desert (Lolia)

Winter Schnee in Atlas in V7-8? This is her song, especially in that V8 fight against Ironwood.

Training Montage (The Mountain Goats)

This is Neopolitan post V3, specifically the time between the V3 finale and when we see her again in V6, bonus if you think about the very end as V9 right at the end of ch8

World Burn (Taylor Louderman, Mean Girls)

Cinder Song Ever. Plus you can replace Kady with Ruby every time. It's fun.

See The Day (The Althogether)

Ruby Rose at the end of V9 would maybe cry if she heard this song but in a good way

Honeybee (Steam Powered Giraffes)

It's bumbleby you already know

Special Girl (Dodie)

Pyrrha Nikos really was doomed before she began, wasn't she? This is just Her Song

This is a Yang Song, and it reminds me of both her fights with Neo and Adam, in which she didn't fare so well the first time around, but came back to fight them again

The Greatest (They Might Be Giants)

Jaune song.

World Spins Madly On (The Weepies)

This is simultaneously a Taiyang losing Summer song and a V4 Yang losing Blake song. They understand each other. And it works well with the song being a duet, just listen to it, you'll understand.

Hummingbird (The Weepies)

This is such a Nora song about her and Ren, and I love it and her and them dearly

I'd Rather Sleep (Kero Kero Bonito)

This is just RWBY: Ice Queendom. The whole thing. In one song.

Candle Queen (Ghost and Pals)

I lied earlier THIS is the Cinder Song Ever, like I'm not kidding THE most Cinder Fall song to ever exist it's literally her

I was very neutral on Emercury as a ship until I heard this song and realized the first half is Emerald and the second half is Mercury and now I feel things about them, although this can also work for them platonically as well

This is bumbleby Yang is SO p.u.n.k girl coded and Blake loves her so much

Despair (leo.)

Whiterose song. Weiss is so scared to be in love that she denies that shit so hard. The lady really DOTH protest too much.

Too easy, it's a Fair Game song, but like, it's PERFECT

Schnee children, no explanation needed.

A Quick Nora Thought...

Nora's first appearance in the series sets up her arc in two ways:

Nora: I can't believe we've been at Beacon for a full twenty-four hours! Not that I thought we'd get kicked out or anything, I mean, you're the perfect student and I'm… well, I'm me! But it's just crazy, you know? We've been friends for soooooooo long! What are the odds we'd still be together? Well, not "together-together…" Not that I'm not saying that you're not handsome; you are handsome, but that'd just be weird, right?

Let's focus on 2 lines:

Not "together-togheter"...

I'm... well, I'm me!

Not together-together

Nora is initially co-dependent from Ren. She is saved by him and spends the majority of her life by his side. As a result, she struggles to find a new balance, when her feelings become romantic. They are together platonically, but not romantically. At the same time, Nora's idea of getting together-together as things are is unhealthy.

I'm... well, I'm me!

Let's consider these 2 scenes:

We've got a world-renowned fighter on our team, what's basically a ninja, I can bench five of me… Jaune… We've trained all year, our weapons are awesome, Glynda barely yells at us anymore and… Uhh… Jaune!

Nora: Yeah, they’ll be fine. Jaune’s a great leader, Oscar’s grown a ton, and Yang is more than capable of protecting them all in a fight. Oh, and of course Ren is- um…

Whenever Nora can't properly say who someone is, she would define them by their name. In volume 3, Jaune is still unsure of his identity, so he is no-one, but Jaune. In volume 8, Ren is going through a similar identity crisis, so Ren is someone Nora doesn't know anymore. This speech pattern highlights that the character mentioned has a frail sense of self. Well, what does it say about Nora, then? The very first thing she says is that she is unsure of who she is. Ren is someone, for example a handsome perfect student. But Nora? Who is she?

Ren + Nora = Renora

Nora's arc is built around 2 ideas, which seem opposites. On the one hand her story focuses on her relationship with Ren, as he is her objective since early on. On the other hand she must figure out who she is as an individual. So, how can she be together-together with Ren and be just Nora at the same time?

Nora: I don’t know what he is. Every time I think the two of us are making progress, he… (sighs) We’ve been together our whole lives but I feel like I understand him less now than ever. And I don’t know if that’s his fault or mine. Blake: When you’ve been at someone’s side for so long, after a while they become a part of you. But that’s just it, they’re only a part of you. Don’t forget about the rest. Nora: I don’t actually know who I am… without Ren. Pretty sad, huh? Weiss: Well, maybe take this opportunity to find out? Do something only Nora can do.

The two thematic threads come together in volume 8. Nora doesn't know who Ren is and since she has built her self-image around him, she is suddenly unsure of herself as well. It turns out that to go from Ren + Nora to Renora, our girl needs to figure herself out:

Nora: When my mom ran from the Grimm and left me behind, you found me. We became Ren and Nora. But I realized on this mission apart, I don’t know who “Just Nora” is. And if I’m ever going to find out, then I have to do it alone. Because I’ve always loved you, Lie Ren, and that pretty head on your shoulders seems like it’s doing a lot better. But I still got to get mine sorted out before I can be the partner you need. Is that…okay?

Only in this way, she can be by Ren's side (together), but not in aa codependent way (together-together).

As for who Nora is... the episode Risk makes it pretty clear.

The most beautiful flower of all

What beautiful blossoms we have this year, but look... This one's late...But I'll bet that when it blooms it will be the most beautiful of all. (Mulan, 1998)

The Renora's confession scene ends with Nora being not ready for a relationship with Ren. And yet, the moment looks at Nora he sees the air full of petals ready to bloom. Considering Ren's Mulan's allusion and the importance flowers have in Renora's arcs, I think the reference is pretty clear.

Nora (a pink flower) has yet to bloom. She is late in a sense. However, the flower which blooms late is the most beautiful of all. That is Nora. Our girl will definately bloom into herself, no matter the adversity she meets:

The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all (Mulan, 1998)

everyone knew that nora had been in love with lie for quite some time now

but after being rejected by him, nora began to spend more time with her friends, including you

you were always there to make her smile and lift her up when she felt down

the two of you often talked on the phone until deep at night, with nora venting about her feelings to you

though one particular night, nora realized that something had changed between the two of you

the two of you were texting late at night, about some upcoming events at school, exchanging memes and silly messages

and suddenly, nora realized that she hadn't thought about lie for quite a while now

instead, you were the one she always looked forward to talk to

even now, she longed to see you again, even when she knew that in just a few hours you'd see each other again in class

a bit overwhelmed by her feelings, nora decided that she needed to sleep over that revelation, before telling you about it the next day...

Do you think part of the reason why Ruby was so upset at Blake and Yang in particular isn’t because she’s genuinely mad they got together (or homophobic as I’ve seen some people joke) but because she’s /jealous/ that they were able to take enough time for themselves to even think about their own personal relationship, when meanwhile Ruby has been fighting for her life since the end of volume 3? Like maybe Ruby would love to stop and talk to her friends and sister about her potential love interests (as a girl her age should get the chance to) but she doesn’t have /time/, and seeing Yang and Blake kiss just made her realize what she’s been denying herself in order to be the Heroic Leader. idk I’m in my rosegarden feels and I bet watching Yang and Blake be so close just makes her feel more alone than ever.

LMAO I'VE SEEN THE HOMOPHOBIC JOKES 🤣🤣 how anyone actually believes that allegation is very funny. But yeah I agree. Since the very beginning of the show, Ruby has just wanted to be a normal girl with normal knees who can "paint her nails, try on clothes, and talk about cute boys" with her friends (Note: Oscar has been called cute twice already in show). And Ruby has not had the chance to do so at all because she hasn't stopped moving. Even leading up to v9, everyone else had other things they were focusing on and she's just been trying to hold everybody up. Never taking time for herself to sort out her own struggles. So she's feeling alone and left behind. I went over it a bit in the Treasure Analysis about the framing at the end of v9e6 where the Bees are warm and cozy by the fire, Weiss is warm with her cup of tea, and Ruby is sitting cold by herself by the window across from an empty chair. All alone in crowded rooms without the one person that makes her not feel that way.

The volume starting with Oscar as the very first illusion that Neo uses - and RG being the only pair that was split up in v8 that didn't end up reunited in v9 - sets up his absence very strongly right out the gate. And that absence just seems to grow with each episode.

As much as I do love RG, I don't know that Ruby necessarily knows she likes Oscar or has reached that point. At least not yet, but distance makes the heart grow fonder (as we have seen with Renora and the Bees) and I have a feeling we're not ready for how close they're going to end up when everyone is back in Vacuo.

Part of her upset here in the Ever After, is that she is crushed under the weight of so many things that she doesn't even have time to entertain such an idea as a crush. In any other circumstance, Ruby would have been elated about so much of what they're experiencing. She would have been excited for the bees just like she had been in v6 and she would have been all over this fairytale nonsense in the Ever After.

But she's tired. Weiss is snapping at her every other hour, Jaune is a broken husk of himself and needs their help more than he can offer it in return, and the Bees got to spend time sorting out their feelings and find comfort and support in each other... while Ruby is just dealing with all of this on her own.

She doesn't feel seen. She doesn't feel wanted. She doesn't feel prioritized. The only person that ever asked 'what about Ruby' is in another dimension and the only one in Ever After that noticed before she broke was Little (who has VERY STRONG PARALLELS to Oscar as I just brought up in a recent ask).

This volume is very rough emotionally on our characters, but I'm really optimistic for Vacuo being an arc of resting, rebuilding, and recovering for all of them. But especially for Ruby. Because there ain't no way all of what was brought up this last episode can be resolved in the 3 we have left until the season is over. But at least Oscar is waiting for her with open arms once she gets there. 🌲💕

It's been years but—Ren/Nora/Ruby for ship bingo?

Joke's on you I have been regularly booting up src and replaying the renorby route for the past five years it is ALWAYS renorby hour. Anyways I'm a sucker for renora in general (I <3 codependant bitches who don't know how to exist without the other) but in the context of src it SO delicious. It's about meeting the only people in the world who could ever possibly come close to understanding what you're going experiencing on a day-to-day basis. It's about thinking the world is only you and your best friend and learning there are other people you can love out there. It's about willful shattering. It's about having a god wake up from a 6000+ yrs old slumber to prophecize that you are a bottom. I need to replay the renora route right now immediately I haven't been on my bullshit in WAY too long.

If Renora was a person, what would they be like?

...This is going to be a whole thing, isn't it? Alright. I'm game.

Renora is a surprisingly shy person to meet. But once you're, you are in, and you get to see what they're really like.

Body-wise is a bit hard to describe, since they seem to flip-flop between losing to a koala in an energy use competition and outrunning a panther six times over. They're either curled up in a people burrito watching their favorite MTVWA, or they're on their drums, playing Dragonforce guitar notes. Don't ask how, even I can't figure it out.

As for how they dress, it's very plain and professional, yet still stylish with their own unique flaunt and flair, like a pink buttoned- up shirt with powder blue frills.

When you meet them, they're quiet and don't talk very much, but over time, you start to notice they speak up more around you. And before you know it, you're asking them to calm down before they get you guys in trouble. A real fun hang.

But there's something else going o. In that mile a minute/hour brain of theirs. At the right, or perhaps wrong trigger, they become very sullen and quiet, more so than when you first met. At some points, they might switch back, but only to snap at you.

Alright, who's next? I know this is going to be the flavor of the season.
