What I don't get about the password-sharing fiasco is....if it was the olden days and you rented a couple DVD/VHS movies, until you brought them back to the shop you could do whatever with them.
You could give them to other people to watch. You could show a movie to a group of ten friends. You had already paid for the tapes, so who was going to care what you did with them in that time?
Similarly, if you have already paid for a Netflix/Max/Dianey+/Paramount+/whatever subscription, you're getting charged monthly for that. The companies have already decided how much it is worth to rent their entire catalogue to you for a month.
So during your "rental period" for these movies and shows, who are they to say what you do with them? If you have someone over for Netflix and chill, they aren't part of your household, so should they not be able to watch a movie you are renting? If you want your friends to see something cool, who cares if they live a town away? That movie is still being paid for, and your "rental" will renew the following month when you pay your bill.
It feels like going to a video store, paying for a bunch of movies, then having to march back to the store with the friend who's going to watch them with you so they can also pay for the movies......while you're still renting them.

Movie rental store Touya lays awake at night thinking about you. Having sex with you, in particular. He wants you to fuck him so badly, so impatient about it, but he pretends he isn’t. He doesn’t wanna be that guy that’s breathing down your neck for sex because he thinks you’re pretty and weird and funny and interesting, but he cannot get the idea of you on top of him out of his head when he’s supposed to be sleeping.

more movie rental store touya because i want to keep indulging myself and i’m still thinking about the guy that caused this brainrot, curse him!!! lol — part one
the store phone rings, an old landline plugged into the wall. it barely ever rings, and when it does, it sounds like the ringer was submerged underwater at some point in its life. the thing is probably as old as the store itself, and when he answers, the line isn’t very clear, but it works well enough.
he’s in the middle of working another dead shift. in all honesty, most of the hours he works feel graveyard, to the point he wonders how the store stays in business.
“hello, allmighty movie rentals, how can i help?” he’s bored, but actually doing his job is something he’d rather not do, especially if it meant reciting that stupid introduction every time the phone did ring and break the quiet, lifeless monotony of his day.
“touya?”
the voice on the other end of the line is quiet. how they knew it was him that answered, how they knew his name at all, was concerning.
at least if he had a stalker it would make things at the store more interesting without him actually having to work.
“and who is this?”
“it’s me.”
“me, who?”
he’s squinting at the window trying to hear better, seeing only fragments of people passing by through the misty logo printed onto the glass blocking his view of the outside and thoroughly more interesting world,
“i can’t talk but—” the shaky exhale feels like the person is whispering right into his ear, feels like he can feel the wet of their breath on his skin. “what was on that dvd that you gave me last night?”
“haah?”
“she—she’s after me.”
“who?”
“sadako.”
touya catches on. the only person who rented out the ring last night was—
“pretty eyes. you almost had me worried.”
your laugh sounds boxy and square through the muffle of the phone, but it still perks him up from the mind-numbing quiet of the store, yearning for something to fill the silence that wasn’t the white noise of the broken ac unit that he can’t turn off, making the place annoyingly cold now that november is here.
“sorry. i couldn’t resist.”
“you have a funny way of flirting with me.”
“who said i’m flirting?”
“oh, right, prank calling the guy you’ve met once at his place of work is normal, excuse me for thinking this was interest in me.”
“ah, sorry to break it to you. i’m just weird.”
“do weird people get hungry?”
“uh, sometimes. why?” he can hear your smile in your voice, absently finds himself smiling along with you, nodding to the old couple that come in.
“do you think, maybe, you’d be hungry later tonight? say, around 6:30?”
“i think i could be hungry by then.”
“i think i could be, too. whatever should we do about that?”
“i think, maybe, the solution would be to eat,” you say.
“do you have plans to eat already? because if not, you could join me.”
“hm, really? join you where?”
“i think i recall you saying you know where to find me.”
-
you wait outside the store at 6:30 for him, and when he comes out to lock up he has a dopey grin at seeing you.
“you’re wearing this fleece again?”
“well look who it isn’t. i’d threaten to report you for stalking me, but having a stalker would make working here more interesting.”
“you invited me.”
“that’s what a stalker would say.” he nods over across the street. “you comin’?”
the mystery of touya keeps you on his tail, and the mystery of you holds his attention. it’s only a short distance you walk from the movie rental store before he stops at a pizza place.
he holds the door open for you, but you linger beside him, and tug at the fabric of his fleece.
“you didn’t answer my question.”
“it’s fucking cold at work, and it’s fucking cold out here. c’mon, let’s go in.”
you can’t stop yourself from still smiling away at nothing in particular as you step into the warmth, the air heated with the warm smell of good food and the cluster of people already seated. it’s a welcome contrast from the chill outside.
“so, what’s your name?” he asks as you find a seat in the corner. there aren’t many tables, the restaurant small and seemingly family-run, but you sit by the window, letting you people watch as the rest of the world goes by. “not fair that you got to cheat because mine’s on my lanyard.”
“i’d say it’s fair play.” you tell him your name but pout. “i was kinda enjoying being called pretty eyes, though.”
“i can continue, i just think it’s fair play to know who pretty eyes is.”
“and who is touya, other than a curse?”
“just a guy you probably make more money than.”
“how do you figure that?”
“it isn’t hard to get paid more than doing a job as shit as mine.”
“you have a funny way of asking me to pay for dinner.” you pick up the laminated menu off the table and look at him mirthfully over the top.
“sorry. i’m just weird.” he winks at you. “nah, i’m not that shitty to ask you to pay. but i won’t say no to you getting the bill next time.”
“if i get to choose where we go, then you’ve got a deal.”
