Part 3 of my reptile enrichment tent series!
I mentioned last time I had gotten the bigger 6ft tent for Kazul to have less-supervised out-of-the-tank time but hadn’t posted pics of her in it yet. So the first two photos are just that! Getting some fresh air on the porch on a nice day. As you can see I was using my drying rack inside for something for her to climb on, since the climbing frame I made for her a couple years ago didn’t quite fit inside (due to the doorway size).
So photos 3-5 are from today, I chopped off a bit of the legs on one side and made it just thin enough to squeeze through, as well as hopefully easier for me to store/move through doorways in my apartment lol. Bonus is when it’s inside the tent and i don’t have Both taking up half my craft room, I can actually walk across the floor again (which was the same problem I had the first time I tried this).
Last pic is a fun setup I just put together of connecting the big tent with the older small one via a poster tube. The zippers of each tent are held together with a piece of wire here so she can’t push her way out of the gap in the screens. I’m waiting till she’s more active in the evening to put her inside to try it out but probably she will ignore it and sit in a corner the whole time or something to spite me.
Some potential issues: when I had her outside she spent a while rubbing against the mesh/pushing her face on it like she was trying to move through it. She doesn’t glass surf in her tank (and honestly doesn’t even seem to realize she can go through the space when the door is open), and while she gets confused by windows/glass doors when outside she doesn’t spend forever on them, so I’m hoping she figures out it’s not open and stops. Otherwise I may need to drape some fabric over most of the mesh to counteract it. But fingers crossed!

Nova on her rock wall!
She loves climbing it all the way to the top. I strongly recommend a 3D background if possible.

nelly conducted a very important cereal box investigation today. results are ... approved :)
i like putting new and interesting (and of course, safe—no sharp points/edges, so sticky stuff, etc) items in nelly's enclosure every so often, like paper towel tubes or other recycling. today's item is a cereal box. i actually put it in there a couple days ago but this was her first time coming out to explore since her meal on saturday. she began her investigation with a big drink of water from her pool/bowl and has been in and out of the box since. i take the random items out if they get wet or when i notice she hasn't really been interested them in a few days, or just whenever.
this is also, accidentally, a great way to show how much she's grown recently!!!! look at her!!! my big cranky monster!!!

Six pictures of my orange corn snake Nelly exploring a cereal box. Two photos show her yawning. The others show her inside or climbing on the outside of the box. ]

Reptiblr! Advice needed!
Hey, snake people. In a few months I’ll be getting a ~9 year old female ball python. A former breeder.
Tumblr media
She used to be mine when I was a teenager, but my dad sold her and all of my other snakes when I went to college without telling me. We had an agreement that he could sell some snakes, but he was supposed to keep the few I specified. This snake was one of them. He sold her anyway. I’m still in college, but I’m getting my shit together so I can get her back... and hopefully some of my others, too. If I can afford to, and if I have the ability to care for them. Her current owner has agreed to sell her back to me, and I’m thrilled. She’s gravid right now, but after she lays and starts eating again, I can bring her back home.
Here’s the trouble: She’s been in a rack system her whole life. That picture up above is from when I used to own her. I didn’t know any better when I was a teenager (I mean, I got her when I was fourteen. I was still in middle school), but now I’d like to transition her to the pet life. I bought her a 4x2x2 foot PVC cage, which is the best I can afford and the most I can realistically fit in a college dorm, and the most I can even sort of move with. I know she can go on and off of food when her living circumstances are changed, and her current owner told me that she’ll only eat if she’s in a grey tub.
So, anyone who has any ideas at all, how can I transition her to pet life? What do I need to do? I’m reading up on ball python care again, but I also could really use personal guidance if anyone can help me. Anything on the transition, moving with a ball python (due to, you know, not permanently living in a dorm), enrichment... Really anything. She’s probably pretty overweight and undermuscled, so uh, snake physical therapy advice would even be helpful.
Also, if anyone has any guidance on how to DIY appropriately sized and enriched ball python enclosures that are easier to move with, cheaper, etc., please let me know. I want to do it right this time, and if I can get more of my former snakes back, I’d like to. It’s just.. really challenging.
I do have two snakes at college with me now, a Honduran milk snake and a Kenyan sand boa. No trouble there. It’s just intimidating jumping back into ball pythons when I know I’ve made so many mistakes with them previously.
This has been really rambly. This is an emotionally challenging and financially draining process for me, and I would appreciate literally any advice or support. I’m doing my best.

This was an "interesting" exhibit. A canebreak rattlesnake, a southern copperhead, and an eastern rat snake all cohabitated at the California Academy of Sciences.
I realize they're in an educational facility and these snakes have overlapping habitats, but I didn't see many places for them to get away from each other and I wasn't impressed by the enclosure size or decor.
This display gave me an uneasy feeling. Hopefully I'm just wrong.
