I made sweaters for my rescue chickens! They aren’t entirely happy about it but it’s real chilly today and I figured I should start getting them used to their new duds 😅☺️ I have one other girl that needs a sweater due to feather loss (roosters at their old home) but she’s too THICC for the ones I made so I’ll have to use a larger hook 🙄

Wanted to make a happier post because we had a bit of a tragedy happen yesterday. The neighbors’ dog broke free and attacked our chickens, mauling one and was going after one of our best laying hens when I finally spotted what was happening. The mauled chicken lasted a couple of hours afterwards as we brought her into the warm house and wrapped her up in towels but she passed before a vet could come to put her to sleep. To add insult to injury, the neighbors were cold and uncaring. My mom warned them that if the dog did that again we would put it down ourselves because it’s legal to protect our livestock from any animal where we live, and they responded with “karma is a bitch. If your horses ever get out again they’re dead.”

We have never harmed them or any of their pets. Our horses have gotten out one time in the past 6 years, their dog has gotten out at least 6 times in the past 2 years and comes over to our home to terrorize our horses and now to murder our chickens. I don’t blame the dog; I blame the neighbors for their lack of supervision and poor training. I really don’t want to but I will protect my chickens with my life if necessary and I’d hate to have their dog pay for their ignorance and disregard for the safety of their neighbors and neighbors’ livestock, since we’re not the only ones around here with small animals.

I hate to put a damper on this very cute post with all that, but this is a reminder to train your dogs well and to make sure they are supervised when outside, even when they’re on a lead. You never know what can happen. Even if we didn’t have animals that the dog could go after, he could’ve run out to the road and gotten hit by a car, or gotten mauled by a wolf or bear or cougar out in the woods. It’s not just for the safety of our animals but for their dog. They essentially told us to “get used to it. He’ll get out again.” Unacceptable. Disgusting. If we had an animal control facility to call around here we would in a heartbeat but I’ve been told it was disbanded. People like them don’t deserve to have dogs.

"It's hatching season!

My rescued fighting rooster is there to help! He's rescued from Hawaii and has helped me keep quail and baby chickens warm for two years! Never has hurt anyone. 🥰😍 He's also an indoor rooster due to severe leg and keel trauma. He doesn't wear a diaper at night. He has his own bed. Lol

I raise chickens and quail as pets so they're raised in doors. :)

*how I got him! I used to live in Hawaii and cock fighting is really bad there.. I saw him with what appeared to be his intestines hanging out. I jumped a fence, grabbed him, jumped back over and ran before anyone could see me. Lol. I run a rescue for roosters out of Hawaii with a lot of other rehabbers. After a ton of medical care and flying him to Illinois.. Here he is, helping me raise quail and chickens as pets. :)"

Just goes to show that ex fighting roosters even with trauma can make wonderful pets. This handsome boy isn't an outlier it actually isnt uncommon for ex fighters be gentle household companions as long as they aren't housed with other roosters!

My cockatiel Bandit is molting right now and he looks so nasty 😂

If I didn't know what was happening, I'd be panicking thinking he's sick. Shoot, even though I KNOW what's happening I still am worried about him. 😂

On the plus side, I managed to get some of his shed feathers before he destroyed them so now I have a few intact wing and tail feathers from him for my collection. 👀

I always say the reason I have birds is so I can collect their feathers. It's a joke, of course. Mostly.

#as a kid i was obsessed with collecting feathers #come to learn collecting wild bird feathers is actually illegal lol #so i had to get my own birds 😂#just a PSA: I don't endorse keeping parrots as pets #they don't make good pets for most people #they aren't domesticated and really aren't well suited for captivity #a majority of my birds are rescues #that were already in the pet trade #i don't support breeding parrots as pets #if you want a bird as a pet look into domesticated species like pigeons and chickens and i think some finches #or look into rescuing parrots in need of homes #they live so long that they often are traded around a lot #okay i'll get off my soapbox now
