9 years ago today - on February 19th 2015, I (reluctantly!) went to meet a 21 month old border collie, who was very, very rapidly running out of time & chances, thanks to his unbelievably difficult behaviour. I was not looking for a 2nd dog, let alone one with major problems that needed working through but somehow, I found myself being persuaded to just "go see what you think of him".

I met Flynn, though that wasn't his name then - along with my dad (who'd been the one doing the persuading) & Flynn's then owners - we went out for a walk together, on cold, rainy, mirky afternoon. From what I'd heard beforehand, I was expecting to find some poor, sad, skulking, defensive creature, who didn't like anyone... Flynn was not that. I looked at him, as he joyfully ran circles in the gathering dusk... carefully making sure he offered the ball to each person he was out with - including us strangers... & I felt there was hope for him. Or, at least that it'd be a shame to let this young life get cut short, without at least attempting to see if he could improve & overcome his fears. The early years were hard for us both. I am in no way a dog behaviourist, or trainer & I was in over my head with Flynn! Even at our worst moments though, Flynn was always clearly desperately keen to keep *trying* to work with me, trying to not be scared of things which clearly terrified him, trying to trust we were on the same side - & that kept me trying too. I'm so thankful we both stuck at it! 9 years ago, I met Flynn & suspected there was a terribly clever, affectionate, funny little dog, hidden under the distrust & fear & stress... I was right. More & more as time goes by, Flynn's true nature has shone through & he's come further than I ever thought possible. He is a wonderful companion & brings me so much joy every day - haha & even when he's a grumpy old man, we can laugh about it. Good Boy, Flynn... I'm glad I went to meet you on that nasty day in February, all those years ago.

There seems to be a trend on DogTok to demonize and regard rescue dogs as trash not worth saving or rehabilitating and just flat out demonizing no kill shelters and rescues with little nuance. I'm sorry that abused dogs who are traumatized and stressed aren't the 2k purebred puppy that you saw on Craigslist but the majority of shelter dogs deserve a chance at a good life even if you personally would never give them the time of day.

Cody aced his first doggo meeting with the behaviourist’s dog! And his second doggo meeting with a random huge lovely Staffie called Odin who was built like a sack of cement. And his third and forth doggo meeting with a wee Staffie and slightly harrumphy French Bulldog. First trip to the park was officially a success!

And now he’s slept for about four hours so far, in his crate with the fan on, with his sore leggies stretched out in the air like so

Sunday, March 24th was my gotcha day/birthday

We spent the day making my favorite then some time outside walking around. Mom learned I’m probably closer to a senior age mom has deemed that I am 9 years old now.

we have a client at work whose "type" is like black pitty mixes (she keeps getting them) and she came in w one the other day and my coworker was like "that's great cause there's that black dog syndrome" and the client was like "oh yeah i have that i love these black dogs" and my coworker was like "no it's about how black dogs are way less likely to get adopted in general" (i added "black cats too") and the client was like ??? WHAT???? FOR REAL??? i love that she's so obsessed w her (gorgeous, well behaved) dogs that she couldn't even conceive of a world where people didn't like them

#Work #Vet med is like. You really do see the WORST of humanity sometimes #Neglect abuse disinterest. You argue w some clients over 'does this dog need pain relief' or 'should you spay your dog w mammary tumors' #And it's super discouraging. Tons of burnout. BUT #You also get people like our client who exclusively rescues old/sick/unadoptable cats #She has like 10 at any given point in her huge immaculate house. All cared for perfectly. Clean. Amazing #You get people digging in their pockets for change for vaccines #Helps I work in a wealthy area too but god damn the love I see every day is genuinely healing #I do want to leave the field still (broke af) but there is so much joy and wonder and love and beauty in it #Also it's funny sometimes. One client used to bring her last dog in a lot (heart issues; now deceased) #And when she dropped him off for echoes or whatever she would say 'he loves large breasted women' AND HE DID???? #Charlie I miss you. Your mom is fucking crazy but she loved you and I loved you. And you did love stacked women

Vanished for a bit to take care of a WHOLE ASS LITTER of puppies that got dropped off unweaned 🙃 Funny count though, originally 9... 8 boys, 1 girl 🤣🤣🤣 The other two are ok, they just went to the lady who had already bought them before I got the rest.

Here's six of the seven getting some car time in! We didn't go anywhere, just getting everyone used to being in a car before they go home. Or I start taking them into town for training 💙

So me and my family spent the morning at a rescue looking at dogs and there's two that we're looking at inparticular and I shit you not one is giving pure Louis vibes while the other reminds me so much of Lestat it's literally Louis and Lestat but if they were dogs. The only thing is, we're only getting one but we love them both so making a decision is going to be so hard

#i'll update when we get one of them #though that won't be for a couple of weeks yet #providing we can get either of them anyway #it was weird though cause i had a dream about our last dog before i woke up this morning #and i think it's the first time i've dreamt about him since he died at the beginning of the year #and it felt like he was saying goodbye even though i said goodbye when he died #i just think it's funny that happened on the day we go to look for a new dog #and then when we were at the rescue i kept seeing a robin which i like to think was our old dog #anyway. despite how much i still deeply miss our old dog i'm really excited to get another #also we took the two dogs we're looking at on walks #and while we we're walking the second dog there was a huge group of bikers that went passed all dressed as santa #so that was cool #i didn't intend to write a whole damn essay but here we are #my vampire chronicles

My good girl 💙 I cannot get over how smart she is & how far she's come. 9 months living outside, over a year using potty pads inside with fosters & for another month or two with us.

And yet, she's picked up the outside potty routine so well. Yesterday when I got home, she had to go so badly that she ran straight out into the run before I got the yard gate open, and peed for like 30 seconds.

But she'd held it all day, no accidents! And Jack had been worried she might poop inside bc he wasn't sure she went after breakfast. But nope!! We've had a fair share of accidents to clean up over the past 6 months, but considering where she's coming from.... she's really done amazing with it.
