Who laid your #eggs? 🐔 We are fussy with where we buy our eggs from. 🥚 Luckily, this weekend we are #chickensitting these gorgeous #rescuehens that were too old for the battery farm they grew up in. 🐣 They were brought to a lovely little mini-farm where they have a nice safe enclosure and they can get out and scratch about in the dirt. 🐤 They love exploring and pecking at the plants and dirt in their new home. They also have lovely personality! One is the boss, Rose is the dopey one who keeps getting lost or running into things, and one loves following humans around. 😁 Chickens can be treated absolutely terribly in egg farms. 😢 Even some of the places that call themselves "free range" will still de-beak new born #chicks (an incredibly painful process that can and often does go wrong) and throw the male chicks into bins or blenders *alive*. On top of that there are the food miles of the eggs and what the chooks were fed to consider. I recommend trying to find a greengrocers or smaller produce shop to ask about their eggs. Great news about Cheeks! Her left sinus and tear duct was completely blocked and Dr. Speer was able to go in, remove some petrified material (likely food that had somehow gotten lodged in her sinus) and flush everything out! She has bacterial cultures pending to check for any residual infection and is getting pain meds and antibiotics tonight. Felix, the handsome and gentle protector of the flock. ♥️ Contrary to popular belief, not all roosters are aggressive toward humans. While it is in their nature to protect their hens against threats (including humans), most are loving and kind. Felix was purchased from a feed store as a baby chick and believed to be female. When he was male and not allowed in the neighborhood due to crowing, his person found him a new home at Blackberry Creek. Felix’s name means “lucky” because he is extremely fortunate to have ended up at a sanctuary. Rescues and sanctuaries get called almost daily to intake roosters, and many end up being euthanized at shelters. Please don’t buy baby chicks. For every female you purchase, a male was killed as a baby at the hatchery. The ones who slip though and grow up to be roosters, often meet the same fate within about six months. If you want to care for chickens as members of your family, please adopt them from shelters. While we sadly lost one special lady from this rescue, Michelle, to egg peritonitis, the other four, Glory, Liberty, Rosie and Stevie Rogers are flourishing. ♥️ “Humane,” “cage-free” egg farms are still nightmares for chickens, the males being killed at days old and the females at 2-3 yrs old when their poor bodies can no longer keep up with the demand and they are slaughtered at a fraction of their normal lifespan. Update 2/12/20: Little Love will be helping countless other birds!!! Read on to see how: Little Love is doing great today! She did well coming off injectable pain meds and is out and about exploring the office when they let her out of her recovery area. Doctors Baden and Speer have been talking about what can be done to avoid this situation in the future for other birds. To perform a very invasive surgery for an ovarian obstruction when the bird is also inflicted with terminal cancer is very hard on their bodies. They’ve been pondering the idea of using contrast dye while the bird is sedated for a CT scan to see if they can get the tumors to appear definitively. If so, the theory is that they’d be able to perform a CT scan in the future and the dye would illuminate the cancer before an invasive surgery occurred. The problem is that clients are often not willing to spend the money to let them experiment with this theory, especially on a “farm” animal like a chicken. We’ve decided, since it will not harm Litte Love, that she’ll stay one more day and have the CT scan tomorrow. Yes it will be expensive. But...it is our hope that it will be invaluable research to find answers for our future bird residents and those of countless other sanctuaries and individuals.
