Continuing on celebrating Women's History Month, this week I would like to share one of my favorite children books, Rosie Revere, Engineer.

Rosie Revere, Engineer is a 32-page picture book written by Andrea Beaty, which was published in 2013 for young children between the ages of 3 - 6 years old.
Rosie is a little girl who dreams of becoming a great engineer. She enjoys building her own innovative inventions like helium pants, hot dog machine, and a snake repellant cheese hat. However, because of Rosie's timidness and her fears of failing, she hides her inventions away under her bed. One day, Rosie's great-great Aunt Rose visits her and let her know her goal is to fly some day. Brainstorming, Rosie spends the night coming up with ideas on how to help her great-great aunt fly. As an idea struck, Rosie comes up with the idea of building a cheese-copter. Testing her invention, the cheese-copter flew into the sky, but then crashes to the ground. Feeling devastated, Rosie's great-great aunt reminds her that failure is a part of life and a true failure is someone who gives up and quits.
After reading this picture book, I felt very motivated to continue to pursue my passions of illustrating children books because I am reminded that if I quit and give up now then I am a failure. Other important themes the book touches are pursuing your passions, determination and resilience, creative thinking, self-esteem, and gender stereotypes. For example, Rosie learned to be resilience in refining her cheese-copter design to help her aunt achieve the goal of flying. Rosie also develops her creative thinking skills by creating various types of inventions like the helium pants. As the story progress, Rosie becomes more self-confident in her creations when her aunt teaches her that it is okay to fail and to never give up — hence, at the end of the book, Rosie shares her inventions that she builds with her classmates. Lastly, the book touches on the topic of deconstructing gender stereotypes because men are more likely to build and create inventions, working in the engineering industry. In this case, the roles are reversed and illustrates that women can also do the same. This is illustrated when Rosie is constant building various types of creations using drills, hot glue guns, oil cans, and many more.
To end off, the illustrations of this book are illustrated by David Roberts. Overall, the illustrations are very playful, vibrant, and it adds to the overall message the book is trying to portray. When we look at the illustrations of Rosie's inventions, we can see how abstract it is, mirroring a child's imagination in a fun way. David uses a lot of thin lines and exaggerating shapes, which guides the audience through Rosie's invention. The use of a white background is also very smart because it allows the reads to be creative and imaginative as well when we see Rosie's creative inventions fill up the blank canvas.

Ending 2023 and Navigating the Tech Terrain
As the year draws to a close, I want to look back at my software development journey and how it has been truly a mix of highs and lows. Completing a software engineering bootcamp was a significant milestone, and the experience has been both challenging and rewarding. I've gained valuable hands-on experience by collaborating in cross-functional teams, contributing to various projects, and dedicating countless hours to a hackathon. The sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing a project through, especially within tight timeframes, has truly made the journey memorable. Working alongside fellow developers and designers has not only honed my technical skills but also provided a taste of the collaborative and fast-paced nature of the software development field. I loved learning alongside people who came from different backgrounds and experiences and I look forward to more teamwork in my future.
Throughout this year, I've undergone a significant learning curve, experiencing moments of both joy and tears, and bursts of anxiety I am managing to overcome. Despite the challenges, I persevered, recognizing that my passion for integrating myself into the tech field was more profound than ever. I realized I owe it to myself to truly explore my potential and see what I can accomplish and create despite the lingering difficulties of getting my foot in the door.
I am not alone in this journey. I understand that there are thousands of us that are experiencing this extremely competitive job market as a junior software developer, whether you just recently graduated from a traditional university, a bootcamp, or coming from a self taught path. Grappling with imposter syndrome, self doubt, and feeling the weight of expectations and pressure is a commonality that I know a lot of people share at this time. It's understandable that during the job application process, everyone becomes a competitor, but I hold a great deal of empathy for those navigating this journey. It's undeniably challenging, and rejections are a universal struggle for everyone involved. I aim to add on to the plethora of resources available that helps other developers and people in general navigate the challenges of job hunting and helping people remember that their worth is not diminished by the rejections and ghosting they may encounter. In this competitive field, you are worth something.
Securing a job in software engineering or the tech industry is not a straightforward or effortless endeavor for most people right now. You need to know exactly what you're getting yourself into and truly really want this to keep pushing through and elevating yourself despite the odds.
These days I'm still learning new frameworks, algorithms, deepening my knowledge on what I have already learned, and working on a mobile development project for a client as a freelancer. Although I don't necessarily have the security of a job with benefits at the moment, what I do have is time to work on my experience. I'm learning to be grateful for the time granted to me. I'm not going to let rejections stop me from doing what I want to do and will continue to push the limits of what I'm capable of. Resilience is the audacity to keep telling yourself "Yes, I can!" even in the face of countless "No, we found someone better." There may be people who are better fit for certain positions than you for whatever reason, but you can make something out of yourself despite these rejections. It takes restructuring, re-strategizing, and resilience. I wanted to start this blog to really start sharing my experiences, resources, projects, and really a channel for me to open myself up with hopes that it may help someone who comes across this blog. How solar-powered Village in Kenya Outback Kept Lights On During Africa’s Biggest Blackout - Technology Org
People across Kenya were mysteriously plunged into darkness last month as the country suffered its worst power outage in a generation – except for a tiny remote village.
Now experts from the University of Southampton have revealed how their mini grid powerplant, fuelled solely by the sun’s energy, kept the lights on across the community of Kitonyoni, in Kenya’s eastern province.

The solar-photovoltaic plant, the first of its kind to be installed in Africa back in 2012, is just a few metres square in size but creates enough energy to power the village alongside its school and hospital.
It kept Kitonyoni, located in Makueni county, powered during Kenya’s massive outage – which affected most of its 50 million population, including in the capital Nairobi, for almost 24 hours.
Engineers behind its creation, called the Energy for Development (e4D) project which includes the University of Southampton, Ministry of Energy Kenya and Kenya Power and Lighting Company, hope to roll it out across Africa where 600million people have no access to electricity.
Professor AbuBakr Bahaj, from the Energy and Climate Change Division at Southampton, said: “The Kitonyoni villagers were the envy of all Kenya, and people from the surrounding villages rushed into its trading centre during the blackout to charge their mobile phones and appliances.
“Kitonyoni has grown tremendously, by a factor of three, since we installed the e4D plant due to the availability of electricity, a growth not seen in our control village 30km away. I remember that the tailor William, who worked with us from the start, wished for an electric iron to replace his wood heated iron – that was duly delivered the second time I visited.”
The Kitonyoni mini grid consists of solar panels and battery storage connected to a distribution network. It took Prof Bahaj and his scientific team just a week to build the first design – which had a capacity of 13.5kWp of uninterrupted power, giving the villagers around-the-clock power for the first time.
The solar canopy also acts as a rain collector and, during the wet season, stores enough water for a year – a vital feature for Kitonyoni which is not connected to a main supply. According to Prof Bahaj, villagers can also generate income by selling the electricity to nearby towns and cities.
The cause of blackout in Kenya, the longest blackout in memory, remains unclear. But such is the success of the Kitonyoni plant that the Kenyan government has since applied for $150milion worth of funding from the World Bank to build more than 100 mini grids across the country, said its Secretary for Renewable Energy Eng Isaac Kiva.
He added: “The reliability shown by the system in Kitonyoni during the blackout was a testament to the UK and Kenyan engineers to deliver solutions that can be widely replicated and deployed to provide electrical power to over 600 million people without energy in Africa.”
The Kitonyoni e4D mini grid is one of six electricity projects across Kenya as well as Uganda and Cameroon.
