The more I work as a pharmacy tech, the more I realize that people absolutely fucking HATE IT when pharmacists do their jobs.
Why isn't your covid medication ready? Because that Paxlovid can absolutely fuck up your kidneys even if they're at 100% and your doctor won't give my pharmacist the renal function test we need to make sure it won't actually kill you.
Oh, you're mad because your new diazapam script isn't filled? M'am, you are on a dose of oxycodone that could knock out a horse and also take zolpidem at night on an "as needed" (wink wink) basis and my pharmacist is concerned you're going to sedate yourself into an accidental death, so yeah. She's gonna need to verify that your doctor really wants to do this.
Sorry we didn't immediately fill the antibiotic the ER sent over, but we're showing that you have a severe allergy to this one and we're trying to get an alternative, but the ER keeps hanging up on the pharmacist. She's called 4 times. If you really WANT the pill that's going to kill you along with that infection, I guess we can fill it anyway.
Like... we are not purposefully trying to deny you meds. We are not trying to make your day worse. But this stuff could kill you or otherwise fuck you up, so maybe calm the hell down and let the pharmacists do what they do best.

“He’s a 10, but...”: Pharmacy Edition!
-He’s a 10 but he asks why it takes you so long to pour some pills in a bottle and slap a label on it
-He’s a 10 but when you tell him that you’ve sent a request already and that he should call his doctor, he says, “Isn’t that your job?”
-He’s a 10 but he insists that you don’t know what you’re talking about, the doctor prescribed it, of course he needs this medication, remove the prior auth immediately!
-He’s a 10 but it’s your fault, personally, that his doctor didn’t give him more refills.
-He’s a 10 but “The doctor said it would be ready when I got here!”
-He’s a 10 but the computer is lying and he’s never ever had a copay in his life and he’s calling corporate when he gets home. No don’t put the Xanax back he needs it.
-He’s a 10 but can you ring his entire cart up with 29 coupons and a complaint already formed for the front end manager
-He's a 10 but if you whisper the word tadalafil behind a paper while nobody else is in a 25 mile radius, the entire country will know he's taking Viagra, how could you be so insensitive
-He’s a 10 but [excruciatingly loud truck noises in the drive thru but refuses to pick up the phone to talk]
-He’s a 10 but “How do you spell that?” “J-O-H-N Szierbajeck”
-He’s a 10 but he swears a coupon card is cheaper than his insurance.
-He’s a 10 but “fill my entire profile”
-He’s a 10 but “no no don’t run through the errors just get me whatever’s ready” “Where is med, med, med, and med? How was I supposed to know there were errors?!”
-He’s a 10 but the concept of offering vaccines to consenting adults who make their own decisions is obviously a crime against humanity
-He’s a 10 but obviously the pharmacist is absolutely overjoyed to not be able to fill his prescription and, despite pharmacist trying for over 2 hours to get authorization, pharmacist must be withholding his medications.
-He’s a 10 but the concept of time is a social construct and therefore he needs a refill of her controlled medications

One of the most upsetting things about working in a pharmacy is how much stigma there is when it comes to patients with chronic pain. Even at my own store, we have a pharmacist that is so quick to label individuals on narcotics as simply addicts. While some patients may be addicted to their pain medications, there’s so much more to it. Chronic pain and trying to get it treated is a nightmare that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Maybe I just have too much empathy from working at a treatment center, but at the same time, most of the pharmacy workers could do with some more empathy. While they’re so quick to judge patients on Suboxone for being addicts, just because they’re “grumpy”, they completely overlook that in order to receive those prescriptions, they have to be compliant with their treatment plan at their clinic.
I hate referring to narcotics by their name to patients. The verbal affirmation of calling it their pain medication is how I combat the stigma in my own mind. They’re in pain. Severe pain, and this is how they’re treating it. It’s understandable when they get upset over it, even though I wish they wouldn’t take it out on us. I’m in pain daily, and while it’s not to that extent, I have the bad habit of being quick to temper.
They’re in pain, and it’s their medicine to treat it.
There’s no stigma for antibiotics. They’re sick. You give them their medication. Keep the same mindset.

Jojoisms is not necessarily something light and fluffy as it may seem on the outside but something more like an onion. Multilayered. The more you cut into it the more you see. I have Over 25 years experience working in retail pharmacy mostly as a pharmacist. The business has changed dramatically. The patients not so much. As a female I have seen changes in the last few years that scare me. The 90s showed so many promises for my gender and I feel we have moved that progress back 50 years for the sake of family values. A word I feel is more politically motivated than anything else. These are my Jojoisms. Stay tuned for more.

I’ve been thinking about writing an op-ed piece about the working conditions as a pharmacy tech, the reasons all the major pharmacy chains in the US are doing so poorly, and just generally exposing how bad the industry is and trying to get it published somewhere, but I don’t know how to go about finding someone to publish something like that and even though I no longer work in the industry at all (and have no intention of ever doing so again) I’m worried about some kind retaliation. Should I leave well enough alone and say “that part of my life is over, just move on” or should I try to give everyday people an insight into why things are so bad in the world of pharmacy?

**Friends taking Ozempic please read!!**
I’ve had several people at my pharmacy be caught unaware, so I figured I might spread the word. US-based pharmacies are having a huge shortage+backorder of Ozempic. (I’m not sure how it is in other countries, sorry! Also for reference, I’ve seen people in pharmacy in almost every region mention the Ozempic shortage, from California to Texas to New York. I am from New York.) We’ve been telling customers that truthfully, we aren’t sure how long the wait will be and that whenever our supplier receives more, they will send it out to us.
We’ve gotten word from our supplier (McKesson, which supplies to Rite Aid and, I think, Target) just today that Ozempic 0.25mg will not be received til at best late September, and all other dosage forms again at best late October. If you are taking this medication, we recommend you to immediately ask your doctor for a script for an alternative to Ozempic before you run out, especially in case we need to order whatever replacement your doctor prescribes.
Stay safe everyone!
(For reference I am a pharmacy technician, not a pharmacist. I only post to try and help others, but for accurate information, please contact your pharmacy!)

Just a Couple Days
At least weekly at this pharmacy (and it feels like much more often) somebody on a controlled medication is "going out of town" and needs to pick up early.
Once in a while - and just a day or two early - we can accommodate.
But there are limits.
Lady comes in today to pick her Adderall up, which through a miracle of miracles we actually have in stock.
Except it isn't ready because it's nearly a week early. I communicate this to her. A fit is thrown. "But I'm leaving town!"
The pharmacist that I really like working with is summoned, once I tell her what's up with this patient. She does her research, and discovers that this patient picks up early each and every month, mostly at different pharmacies, made possible by the shortages.
They have a discussion, and this woman attempts to preach company policy to the pharmacist, which while she isn't wrong, is a very stupid choice to make since nobody likes being told how to do their job - especially if they're already good at it.
The pharmacist goes back to her research, then goes back to our treasured patient. She asks what happened to the medication she should have on hand since she's been picking it up early for nearly a year. She did the math. After no coherent answer, she's told to forget about getting it early. After a bit of griping she threatens to take her prescription elsewhere, as though the pharmacist owns this business and gives a shit.
Then the pharmacist calls her doctor's office. Her scripts will be hard-coded going forward. No early fills without their express approval. Good.
Now one would think that she'd take the L and move on. She would understand she wasn't getting what she wants, and adapt accordingly.
She calls us, maybe 20 minutes later, wanting to talk to "somebody who takes customer service seriously."
Knowing who it was because we all talk to one another, she was transferred to the same pharmacist that shut her down.
Our valued patient, upon whom the very existence of the pharmacy rests, then hung up.
Unicorn Overlord is a great game. -J
