I would never trust the internet to hold me accountable, but here we are.

It’s my aim to write a chapter a week, (minimum), and maybe I’ll be able to have a novel finished by the time my newborn cousin graduates high school.

This isn’t just for external accountability, I also need a PUBLIC RECORD of what project I’ve dedicated myself too, hopefully this will crush the ADHD brain gremlin.

PROJECT #1: Retold Cinderella, with no magic, an independent Ella (must rename her) who just wanted to get out of the house and away from her family for at least one night, and an Aro/Ace Prince who honestly just needs someone to bring home to his marriage and heir obsessed parents. They come to a mutually beneficial agreement. Featuring the Prince’s little sister who insists on running away to become a knight and enough stifling (fun!) pseudo-medieval social conventions to make a goose scream. Title: Untitled.

One of my guiding ideas for this comic is that the story is being written/drawn by Bilbo Baggins, an  “unreliable narrator,” who has a biased way of recounting events. As the comic goes on, parts of the story get retold through new perspectives (or through the eyes of other characters), and you realize the initial version you read was incomplete. 

A lot of you probably noticed that this chapter features a ton of callbacks to the earliest chapters of this comic! We saw child Bilbo and Gandalf's friendship told from Bilbo's POV in Chapter 3.....but in this chapter we see it retold from Gandalf's POV. However, Belladonna Took is our biggest instance of that!   Not to overexplain my own writing, but Chapter 1 is an older Bilbo painting an idealized happily-ever-after fairytale picture of Belladonna, while Chapter 15 features a younger Bilbo telling a far less optimistic version of her life.  While there's truth to both of them, neither of them is the full truth.

In the Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo tells Frodo that ‘books need to have good endings,' like endings where everyone "lives happily ever after." If I were to continue this comic to the end of the novel, Bilbo’s habit of “rewriting things to be happier" would become a whole Thing. 

Second: Much of this chapter is taken directly from “The Unfinished Tales: The Quest For Erebor.” That story was Tolkien’s attempt to unite the tone of The Hobbit with LOTR, by having Gandalf explain what The Hobbit looked like from *his* perspective. The gay line about Bilbo feeling incapable of settling down into a Traditional Marriage with a Wife And Kids is taken almost directly from the Unfinished Tales. So are all the lines where Gandalf reflects on what Bilbo was like as a child, and the moment where Bilbo reflects that all of his desire for adventure has dwindled to a private dream.

Third: Obviously, the other big influence on this chapter (outside the original novel) was a similar scene in the PJ film. The little bit where Gandalf reveals the lore behind Bullroarer took monologue is the only dialogue I’ve directly lifted from that scene. ;3

Fourth: some of you may have caught that I used a quote describing Frodo’s wanderlust in the Fellowship of the Ring to describe Bilbo. The bit describing "the maps that only show white spaces beyond their borders" is also why I emphasized Bilbo’s canonical nerdiness around  maps in earlier chapters (chapter 5 especially, but also in Chapter 6, Chapter 7, and a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in chapter 14.) 

Fifth: one of my favorite things in the original book are all the scenes where Gandalf does fun Whimsical things with smoke/smoke rings. In the book he usually makes them change color or race around; in my comic he usually makes them turn into butterflies (he also does this in chapters 3 and 11.) you may have noticed that Butterfly Symbolism is a big thing in this comic.  But yeah, in another callback: Gandalf finally had time to blow smoke-rings with Bilbo, which he said he 'had no time for' in Chapter 2!

Small Subtleties

A/N: Direct aftermath to 'Muddled Morality' reader still doesn't know why they're special to Vox despite the fact literally everyone else can see it- poor TV man just wants to make you happy but he's genuinely so confused he doesn't know what to do with himself. Bro can't tell if we care in that way or not and he's just stuck HANGING- I love messing with them it's fuckin amazing HAHAHAHAHA-

A/N: Angel and Vox don't have the greatest of relationships at all- they're kind of just acquaintances and that's it. Then Reader got stuck in the mix and then it's all complicated XD. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy this interlude and as always- happy reading!

You were just messing with your phone on one of the couches in the hotel lobby when a certain spider sat down next to you.

It made you finally look up from the screen and raise an eyebrow at him.

"Hey, (Y/N)?"

That was when you realized his posture and tone.

Why was Angel nervous?

Well, nervous or worried, you couldn't tell between the two.

But that had caught your attention.

"Yeah Angel? What's up?"

"Did you uh- by chance say anything specific to Vox?"

By this point you'd nearly forgotten about your recent fight with the overlord.

After all, it's been nearly a week since that evening.

You never really stayed angry with someone for too long, unless they deserved it.

Or unless they just managed to piss you off anyway by existing.

Like a really weird and creepy deer-

But Angel's question made you remember the incident.

You and Vox had only exchanged texts ever since that night.

You didn't have the courage to ask him to visit, and you doubted he would've agreed to anyway.

At least he was still responding to your messages.

"Why? Did something happen? Did he do something to you?"

"What? No! No! He uhm... he's been stepping in when Val would get rough these past few days. Wouldn't explain why when I asked."

"Ha... He what?"

That took you by surprise.

You knew how stubborn and prideful the TV overlord could be.

But he actually listened to you?

Where was Vox and who the fuck replaced him-

"Well, yeah. But he never minded Valentino's treatment before. And when I asked-"

Angel never could understand how or why his boss was so easily placated by his flatscreen colleague.

That you had also unintentionally befriended and become extremely close with.

Did it have to do with the screens?

Moths did like blue light right?

Even then, watching the pimp temporarily leave the studio in a huff-

He didn't exactly believe that was just the case.

Not to mention the elephant in the room, why did Vox jump in?

He never did before-

So why now?

"I had that handled, thank you. Didn't think that you were sticking your head in the porn business now."

The overlord in question just tiredly rolled his eyes at the comment.

Wasn't he going to retort?

Not to mention, Angel noticed the guy giving him a subtle once-over.

It wasn't lustful like he expected either, as if Vox was seriously just checking if there were any injuries or issues.

Which was... weird???

"It's bad for the Vees image and brand if any press about Val's maltreatment gets out. Don't think about it too much."

That response just confused the spider more, especially when the guy just nonchalantly turned around and left!

Like, did he realize how odd he just was?!

All throughout the week he'd been interrupting, standing in between him and Valentino when these incidents would start.

And Vox's answer was always the same.

So Angel figured he'd do the next best thing since there was no getting an answer out of the TV demon.

He'd go to you instead.

"Then he would just walk out like nothing happened?!"

You couldn't help the small smile on your face when the pornstar next to you retold his story.

Of course Vox would pull up such a generic answer.

He had a persona to uphold with his empire and everything after all.

Still, you knew better than to believe he simply started caring.

This wasn't a fairytale.

You looked over at your phone with a small smile, typing a quick message to a certain someone.

When Vox saw his phone buzz with another message from you, he was surprised to see just two words and a heart emoticon.

"Thank you."

It didn't immediately connect for the overlord what you could be thanking him for.

Especially when his mind was still blitzing about work.

Was it a favor you'd asked of him?

Did you mention anything earlier??

Was this about something he mentioned earlier???

He stared at his phone for a little while trying to piece together the puzzle when everything suddenly fell into place.

Oh.

Maybe he should've realized it sooner.

"Is this about Angel?"

"Yeah, I'm glad you listened to me. What made you change your mind?"

You did.

He immediately deleted that reply, only barely catching himself before hitting send.

Fuck.

That was close.

Too close actually.

"Just some concerns I had about any information leaking to the media. Don't really wanna deal with any bad press at the moment."

You knew that reply was bullshit, Vox controlled all the media.

Well, him and Velvette more or less.

And he could use his hypnosis to make the reporters forget any scandals if they ever did happen anyway.

This wasn't anything that should've been of concern to him.

But you could play his game.

"Well, thanks anyhow. I know you didn't need to put in that extra effort."

"It's nothing much. Anyway, did you need anything else?"

Your smile just grew a little bigger at his concern.

You didn't mind the unique treatment.

It made you feel all the more special when it came to your overlord companion.

"Nah, unless you wanna come over? Charlie wants to have a game night and I need allies against smiles. I'm not letting his old ass beat me again in monopoly."

Vox couldn't stop the grin forming when he read your message.

He didn't necessarily help Angel Dust because he cared-

Honestly he didn't, but he cared about you.

And it really didn't sit right that he'd made you upset because of his inaction.

As much as he tried to brush the feeling off, it kept looming over like a cloud that wouldn't go away.

Your brief text exchanges and cold messages didn't really help.

So Vox eventually caved in anyway and did as you asked.

Well, more like indirectly hinted at given what you were angry about-

At this point, anyone who knew the both of you was aware that the overlord you befriended was not above giving you the sun and the stars if he could.

All you needed to do was ask.

Vox let out a breathy chuckle, rubbing a hand over his screen.

He was getting soft.

"Sure doll, I'll see you later."

But he found that he didn't really mind.

Notes: my DUMB ASS forgot to schedule the post and i traveled back home for the holidays, so sorry for the late post, i promise to post normally the next days.

Leon felt warm and comfortable, his bed being the safest place on Earth. And the only thing capable of waking him up was the sweet kisses he felt on his neck and cheek, her soft arms wrapping around him. As he slept shirtless, her soft hands on his chest and back are a welcomed feeling.

“Wake up, baby. You have criminals to catch now”

He turned around and smiled brightly, sitting up and bringing her to bed with him. He gave her sweet and passionate kisses, feeling thankful for life now. Even with all the bad things that happened in his life, he still managed to turn it all around. He was now a cop in Raccoon City, sharing an apartment with the sweet thing in his arms.

He was never one to believe in romance stories and fairytales, but it all changed when he met her. Now he understood the stories that retold the feeling of finally meeting your person. She wasn’t only his person, she was his life, his air, everything.

“Don’t you think the city can wait just a little bit? I think it’s a crime to not spend a cozy morning with my baby, and you know i’m a rule abiding citizen”

She laughed, but nuzzled into his neck, enjoying the time with him. Her heart was full, intertwining their fingers together as they enjoyed some final minutes together before they were wrapped away in their own routines.

He kissed the crown of her head, looking down with his eyes filled with love. She looked away blushing, still shy from all the attention he loves to give her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Can’t I admire how beautiful you are? I’m so lucky to have you in life, love, I hope you know that”

“Just like I am, baby.” She said and kissed him tenderly, caressing his hair.

Some minutes pass, and both know that this loving and cozy moment has to end. Leon suddenly stands up and says “Last one in the shower has to wash the dishes tonight!”

As he zooms to the bathroom, he could hear her complaining and feet thumping on the floor to get to him. In mornings like this, it makes him even more sure that this was the woman that he’s going to spend the rest of his life with. It makes him even glad to have the ring he bought after so many months saving for it.

It may not be today, but he sure is excited as hell to see her face as he asks for her forever. But until that happens, he is glad to have her present.

Books dealing with love, loss, longing and abandonment

This is How You Lose The Time War is a short but beautifully written epistolary novel between two agents on opposite sides of a time war as they slowly fall in love.

Our Wives Under the Sea is one of the most beautifully written debuts I've ever read about a woman whose wife comes home wrong after they thought she'd died at sea and how it feels to grieve the loss of someone who's still in your home.

Lucky Red is a western novel about a young girl working in a brothel who meets her first female gunslinger and falls head over heels for her, and the consequences that come with loving dangerous people.

Body horror galore

Camp Damascus is about a young woman living in a super conservative christian town built around the worlds most successful conversion camp and the horrors that are uncovered there when praying the gay away fails.

To Be Devoured is about a woman whose fascination with the local vultures turns into obsession and the urge to know what carrion tastes like overtakes her life and leads her down stranger and stranger paths.

Chlorine is about a girl whose entire life revolves around being a competitive swimmer, and how abuse, neglect, and obsession with being the best takes its toll on the young women caught up in these destructive cycles.

Flawed character studies

Big Swiss is about a woman who has a kitchen floor reset in her 40s, moves away and starts a new life as a transcriber for a sex therapist and becomes obsessed with one of his clients before inserting herself into this poor woman's life.

The Seep is a speculative sci-fi set in a future where there's been a quiet alien invasion that has given people the ability to make almost any changes to their own bodies and what that world feels like to someone who doesn't want to partake.

Milk Fed is about a woman in therapy who feels cut off from almost everything until she meets another woman who triggers in her a melding of sex, hunger, and religion and where that takes her. Huge trigger warnings for ED content. It gets tough, y'all.

Fantastical wlw books

Bitterthorn is an amalgamation of fairytales retold as a slow burn sapphic love story between a sad young girl from a cursed land and the evil witch who takes her as a companion in the latest of the generational sacrifices made to appease her.

All the Bad Apples may be set in contemporary Ireland but it is a fairytale following a young girl as she travels across the country looking for a sister she refuses to believe is dead and the people she meets along the way.

Gideon the Ninth needs no introduction on this site but for the sake of formatting - lesbian necromancers in space who find themselves in an isolated murder mystery plot. It's not a romance but it is a love story and this series will change your life if you let it.

Translated novels

Boulder is a short character study following a free spirited woman when she accidentally settles down with the woman she loves and how love and resentment can take up the same space in your chest when life doesn't turn out the way you hoped it would.

Notes of a Crocodile is a cult classic coming of age story about queer teens in Taipei in the 1980s. It was written in the 90s so please keep that in mind if you choose to read it.

Paradise Rot is about an international student studying in Australia and her growing obsession with her housemate as they share a space that allows no privacy. I've never read anything that feels stickier.
