Julia Mehretu
Retopistics: A Renegade Excavation. 2001
Ink and acrylic on canvas
257.8 x 529.6 x 5.1 cm
Mehretu’s work was brought to my attention during a meeting with my supervisor. My earlier works were appearing 2D, where now I wanted to create 3D dimensionality. I looked at the large scale, layers, the multi dimensional space in the urban environment. I like how the neutral cream background makes the work spacial and airy and gives depth. I adopted this colour for my backgrounds in my paintings, ‘Meridian’ and ‘In Play’ to also create this effect.

Julie Mehretu, Retopistics: A Renegade Evacuation, 2001 (top)
Untitled 2, 2001; Stadia II, 2004; Mogamma (A Painting in Four Parts), 2012
Julie Mehretu is an American contemporary visual artist, known for her multi-layered paintings of abstracted landscapes on a large scale. Her paintings, drawings, and prints depict the cumulative effects of urban sociopolitical changes. Mehretu is included in Time magazine 's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
Because Mehretu builds her piece from multiple layers of figure and ground alike, the colors, shapes, and planar forms in Stadia II seem to be suspended between surfaces, and are often caught in a swirling motion around the axis of her compositions. The dynamism of the work makes reference to traffic patterns, wind and water currents, migrations, border crossings and travel.

One of the paintings Cathy showed me this week contained expressive dashes of brush marks alongside drawn lines, which reminded me of two artists who came to prominence in the early 2000s. Matthew Ritchie says his paintings relate to his interest in science, philosophy, and religion, and his earlier paintings contained linear elements that remind me of marks drawn on a whiteboard during a lecture. Julie Mehretu’s colossal canvases contain explosive compositions of colored planes and various different lines. What interests me in the group of images you see above is the way that both artists have softened their imagery in recent years, in part by introducing hazy marks that appear to have been made with an airbrush or spray gun.
