I feel like theNew Lorien org would end up helping a lot of refugees because a) it’s clear that the teens who find out they are Guarde are at risk of persecution and b) you can’t tell me that they put out the question “How can we help?” and didn’t get a bunch of people fleeing danger coming to them. AND these people wouldn’t really have any local organizations that are more suitable to be rerouted to. The New Lorien org. has a whole division dedicated to refugees.
Also I think they would partner with organizations like the Red Cross to be more effective. They would also wind up searching for local help a lot of the time because sometimes people would need something like legal help and they can’t know the laws of every country. But a lot of places have resources when you know where to look so the folks at New Lorien get really good at looking.
They really have to delegate like that at the beginning because they just don’t have the resources or know how to help everyone. The result is that they have a broad, far reaching network of people in a range of professions in some pretty unlikely places.
Also the people they help sometimes wind up becoming someone they can call on
On the Red Cross note, I think the Guarde probably made the mistake in the beginning of rushing into a war zone in their eagerness to help someone and fucking up big time. Maybe it’s not an international incident but the seasoned folks on the ground are pissed.
Also how do they filter people? Is there anyone they refuse to help? Like a person whose committed heinous crimes? Or maybe they just ignore requests they think aren’t crises (like triaging)?

Okay, so I almost always filter out the “major character death” warning on ao3, and yet I just wrote a fic several thousand words longer than anything else I’ve ever written entirely centered around reacting to two canon character deaths. And I’m actually really pleased with how it turned out. I have a lot of opinions about the ending of RtZ, but one major complaint I have is that, while we do get to see some of the Human Garde’s reactions and settling into New Lorien, we don’t get to see basically anything about the Loric. This is my approach to a canon-compliant closer look at everyone’s headspace in that last chapter.
Summary: The remaining Garde react to their new scar. Includes lots of introspection, angst, and working through grief and trauma

And yes, Durge is so narratively appealing to me because all what's going on on a Big Scale is literally Your Personal Fault.
The consequences of your own actions. The evil undead general? You WORKED with him.
The lunatic murderer? She is an annoying little sister who stabbed you.
The tyrant closing black fist over the Baldur's Gate? Your Buddy. You were his FAVORITE.
It's not just some random "evil force takes the wheel and you need to save the world."
I mean, it is, but YOU are the part of this evil force. Everything bad happening around can be easily traced back to you and your evil plan. It's YOUR evil plan (and Gortash's, but you were A TEAM of evildoers, equally into it).
You were SO GODAWFUL the tyrant choking Baldurs Gate sees you and lights up like a candle.
Of course it's narratively pleasing, the entire Dark Urge playthrough is just "and if these are not consequences of my own actions" and it's AMAZING.

Two options I headcanon for John’s future post-reborn
A) the happy one -> he lives to be 190-200 years old. The other Loric Guarde died in the last 5-20 years.
He’s active on the world stage in his youth but this gradually peters off with his focus becoming more and more on his community at New Lorien/the village as he gets older.
He’s really not popular when he’s 25-40ish years old because a) people were uncomfortable with the amount of power he had and it took awhile for that to get normalized and b) he was seen as being radical (ex. Brining that Mog ship down so the people on didn’t starve to death). People get used to it and times change enough that he’s liked by the time he dies
John is a hermit to the world but a grandfather to his community at the time of his death. He passed the torch on years ago and now has the best stories (and wisdom)
the New Lorien org is awarded a Nobel Peace Prize (John’s maybe 45/50ish at this point). John and a couple others accept the award on behalf of the org (+ like 10-20 years later he gets nominated on his own but idk if he actually wins that one)
He falls in love with the chief’s (or whatever the leader of the village is called in that region) daughter. He meets often with her father, her, and other village leaders to discuss to manage the relationship between the village and the New Lorien org and just make everyone work. She sometimes goes to UN events to represent the village interests. They slowly fall in love (John blushing over something she said, it’s so cute and soft!). They are the ultimate power couple. When they first get married the world doesn’t know it cause John doesn’t want her to get targeted but eventually he casually mentions his wife or someone makes a comment like “you can’t talk you’re not even married” and Johns like “yes I am”. He just forgets people don’t know because it was a major event in New Lorien/village (chief’s faut her and all) and they’re openly affectionate at home. They can’t have kids because of biological incompatibility but that doesn’t mean they don’t have children. They foster many kids, adopt a few, and are the unofficial matriarch & patriarch of the community. When they’re older, kids visit their house just to see them. John considers her his soulmate. She dies of old age at 90 and he never dates or remarries.
Option b) the tragic one -> John dies first
he’s a bit more outspoken in this one than in the other. Just a bit less careful about not upsetting powerful folks
He’s along the same healing journey in this one as in the other one but he never really makes it to that place where he loves and had accepted himself
Attends group therapy. Addresses feeling like he’s a threat to his own community (again same)
In the end what gets him is the wider world. Something happens that is going to kill a city worth of people in one go and he stops it. For example: a nuclear bomb gets sent to destroy a city and John has been watching for his cause he know tensions are high. He flies out and absorbs the energy from the bomb like Ran did and it kills him
He’s awarded a Nobel peace prize for this but can’t accept it because he’s dead. Six accepts it for him
Public opinion of him really wasn’t great because he was radically for human rights, wanted rights to be extended to aliens, and advocated relentlessly for the rights of the Guarde and for his community (village) to be recognized
In the wake of his death public opinion of the Guarde changes for the better. They become more accepted. It sparks protests and a general push for rights but of course change is still frustratingly slow
Just John dying first because he cares so deeply and is willing to sacrifice his life to save people
He’s under 40 at the time of his death
