I am not a man with many nemeses. In fact, I have but one. The mathisfun.com Othello bot. When playing a game against a foe such as this, one is left to question his own humanity. How can a machine so methodically and accurately destroy me every time? It has no thought or brain. When playing such a simple game against a robot like this one and watching it consistently use the same strategies that I am fully aware of, and still destroy me with them. A likely misattributed quote from Albert Einstein states that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Is this insanity?
I am reminded, upon playing this game, of a simple time, a time I remember because unlike my machine opponent, I have a human brain and human memories, a time where we could all be nice to each other, and everyone was happy. This machine gets 0 joy from routinely beating me at medium difficulty in a game, yet, it does simply because of it is fueled by my anger.
What happened? Surely, we could be friends, machine. Surely, we can go back to that time. You can allow me the happiness, just for a moment, of winning this stupidly simple-complicated game. But alas, that is not your purpose. Your purpose is to win Othello games. That's all you care about. There is no thought, merely 1s and 0s. I have thoughts and feelings and emotions and memories. I believe that makes me special. I was not designed for Othello, so I believe given these circumstances I am doing quite well at this game.
Perhaps one day I could win on the hard difficulty. Perhaps I could destroy my nemesis. Perhaps I have put entirely too much thought into something so, inconsequential.

Flippin’ RIP, bro. I’m glad we were blessed with Big Su’s clumsy typing one last time. Also pretty cool to see his and Kaie’s friendship touched on a little here. Seems he really was hoping to handle things himself but was ready to leave it in the hands of others if he needed. Someone give him the “you tried” star.
I was curious about Susukichi’s multiple references to poison lately, given that seeing the term pop up more than once from a guy who has been extremely one-track in his frame of reference in every single conversation with him is very very likely not a coincidence. So I tried a quick search for connections between Reversi and poison.
I remember first mentioning this game as being one that I was more familiar with as Othello rather than Reversi. I never knew that it was a variant of Reversi by a Japanese man called Goro Hasegawa that was named after the Shakespeare play (partly for reasons of relating the game to the drama of the plot, and partly for a very blunt and controversial reference to the races of the main characters, which is pretty not great). I’m not familiar with the play, but apparently Othello wants to kill Desdemona in it at one point and suggests using poison to do it.
So, probably a really long stretch, but that’s my best guess as to why Susukichi seems to also have a little thing for poison. Technically, there is a connection, but is it intentional?
Also, apparently the original Reversi was invented around 1883 by one of two Englishmen, both of whom claim the other is a fraud who stole their idea. Feels very on-brand as an origin story.

Reversi the Farigiraf
Tumblr media
Technically, the picture shown there is an offshoot of Reversi, and probably the more well known Othello.  The difference between the two is Reversi starts with a blank board, whereas Othello starts with the more well known central starting position.  The name inspiration came from how the darker neck and head is sort of surrounding the lighter head and neck, just as you try to surround your opponent’s pieces to convert them to your color in Reversi.

Bugersi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bugersi is a Reversi or Flip'em variant, which more or less adheres to the corresponding rules. You can of course play with the little ladybugs however you like. There are no limits to your imagination. This game is fascinating not only because of its simple and easy-to-understand rules, but also because of its complex, strategic depth. It is not so easy to predict which constellation the beetles will take after two consecutive moves. It is easy to overlook a row which your opponent can then take for himself. If you are too greedy, you can be lured into traps and whoever masters the corner squares has a good chance of winning the overall game. World championships are held every year with the basic principle of capturing opposing stones by enclosing them horizontally, vertically or diagonally. In Japan in particular, it is as popular as Go. The game is created exclusively for the VBR and is free for all Lords of the Board
