Tips for Students (specifically a-level but really for anyone!)
I’m not going to pretend that all of this works for everyone, and I’m definitely not going to pretend like I’m an expert. I’m 17- I’ve just finished my AS year and I feel like I have juuuuust enough under my belt to give some kind of good advice?
A-levels are not the same as GCSE’s. Get that thought out of your head. It’s good if you congratulate yourself on your GCSE’s- you worked hard and you deserve it!! But don’t enter college with a mindset like, “Oh, I did well in my GCSE’s so this will be fine as well, I don’t need to work as much.” A-levels are HARD. They require effort.
Get started straight away. I think I made the mistake of thinking I had all of the time in the whole world. I didn’t actually start revising until I was about 5 months into the year, up until then I only really made consolidation notes. It’s something I managed to bounce back from but only with a LOT of work- I treated my Easter holidays like going to work, starting revision at 10am and ending at 8pm every single day (obviously with breaks in between which leads me onto my next point…)
Don’t overwork yourself! College isn’t meant to be all work, you need to have fun! Myself and my friends have a tradition where every Friday night, we go out and try a new restaurant and basically muck about in town until 8pm. I have set hours for work, and for rest. Cramming revision in for 8 hours straight isn’t going to be fruitful, why not try 40 minute intervals with 10 minute breaks? It gives time for your mind to absorb new information.
Revision schedules are key. I don’t necessarily mean a full SCHEDULE with colour coded timetables and knowing what you’re doing every second of every day. That works for some people, nottttt really for me. I prefer a simple ‘To Do’ List: just writing down a basic list the night beforehand and setting out the work I need to do, so that it’s there and ready for me the next morning. There are plenty of apps that are useful during this time! I can make a seperate post on that. You also need to keep in mind that regardless of revision, you literally spend most of your time in college itself which is taxing so you need to factor in down time. I chose to go to a college quite far away, which meant waking up at 6am to grab the 7.07am bus (I’ll wake up that early because YA GURL’S EYELINER NEEDS TO BE FLEEKIN) and getting home at 6pm to half 6. I knew I’d be tired and want to laze around, so I made sure I would only work 7 until half 8/9 on weekdays and make up for it on the weekends.
Know what revision works for you. Not everyone finds the same techniques useful. I can’t use flashcards to save my LIFE, but past paper questions are literally my best friend. Experiment with different techniques until you can build up revision of your own.
Everyone who says you’re too busy for a social life- ignore them. If anything, I think it’s one of the MOST important things! You need time to chill and relax and be around the people you love. If you want to work, work with friends that will be just as motivated! Me and my friends would go to the city library every Saturday and just get loads of work done. One thing I will mention is that relationships can be hard during this time; it’s not impossible if you find someone who motivates you as well. Don’t bother with a relationship that will consume all of your time and be unhealthy for you.
Get some sleep. You really need to do this!! I know everyone always says it, but it’s the truth. Your brain will not be functioning properly on little to no sleep. No one said that you need to get a full 8 hours- I get an average of 7 on the weekdays and around 8 and a half on weekends. Just pleaaaaase don’t stay up all night on Netflix because it’s really not going to help you.
Experiment. Research different types of degrees that interest you and test them out- go visit open days, get some work experience, find what excites you! AS year is the year you decide what you want to do, whether that be going to university or a gap year or an apprenticeship. Try out different things until you find something that you can see yourself doing and really grabs your attention, and then research into that more to see if that’s what you want to do.
I hope these helped! I would also like to say that I might do some posts on tips for A-level Maths and I’ve just gotten my AS grades, which alhamdulillah were at a 95% UMS average. I also will be applying for Medicine in the next couple of months so after the application process is done, I would love to do a post on that.
Good luck on your studies!

Went to @swanseaunimakingwaves today and it was amazing! I love the computer science department and for a dempartment which doesn’t even have a building yet - will be built by sept 2018 - it’s impressive I was inspired to study there so quickly. I love bay campus and I love the area.
So far I have visited 3 universities and royal Holloway and Swansea I absolutely love and I am definitely applying for!

24/04/2015 5:47pm I thought i would share an un-posed shot. Symmetry is nice and all but oh so unrealistic. If you can revise with notepads and text books all perfectly in line then i applaud you. I envy you. But this is my style. Currently revising The Development Gap for A2 Geography. Exam is on the 15th June. Exam board Edexcel.

New Studyblr
Hi! My name is Ellen and I’m in my first year of a psychology degree. I’ve lurked in the studyblr community for so long now that it sort of just made sense for me to make my own! I have a small (not small at all) obsession with notebooks and colour coding is my best friend. I’m hoping that making this blog will motivate me to keep up with my notes (and to make them pretty enough so that they’re worth uploading!).
I would really appreciate it if any studyblrs could like/reblog this so that I know who to follow, and of course I wouldn’t mind it if you wanted to follow back! Also, if anyone has any suggestions of who is active/good to follow, that’d be super helpful xxx
