Back to the editing cave! This book I love is about to get some big, but necessary, changes. When you are getting ready to do revisions, do you have a battle plan? Do you tackle the easy stuff first or dive straight into the big picture details? I like to do everything in a linear way. I start with the work from page one and move forward slowly, hoping that the continuity will fall into place as I work. I know some people like to tackle big picture items first, but I find that my brain gets too jumbled if I jump around. I also make myself a checklist and mark things I’ve handled as I go. Long days of rain is not a typical thing for an Arizona summer. Usually this is the hottest time of the year with temps vacillating between 110-115. With the quiet and peace that the rain brings, it has me thinking a lot about rebirth. How one good storm can wash away the dirt and mess of a long dry period. Make everything look shiny and new again. I think this idea of rebirth, while daunting to some, may also be seen as an opportunity to start fresh. To take stock of what is happening in your life and consider a new path. A challenge that will shake up your norm. Some may be afraid of change, but as I grow older I’ve learned to embrace it. For some reason I see it as a chance to reinvent my expectations. Take on new challenges. This not only applies to my own life but also to my writing. It’s not easy to veer away from your comfort zone, but I firmly believe that if you push your skills, venture into new territory, your writing only gets better. I’ve done this a couple of times now and I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I’ve pushed past that fear. It really is in a sense a path to something new and better. I’ve been off for a couple of days and just catching up with this Writing Friends Challenge. Today’s question: First Draft or Revision? I hate drafting. I’m a pretty impatient person and I just want the story out of my head and on the page. I was also trained as a journalist so I draft with a pretty thin word count. This quote perfectly captures how I feel when I’m in the middle of a revision - like I am now. . . I worry that what I’ve written doesn’t make sense. That my book has become a thousand different puzzle pieces I can’t manage to put back together. . . What I’ve learned over the years is that this feeling of struggle, of needing to be brave, is perfectly normal. It’s okay to feel like your story is muddy as you add, cut, and shape that narrative. . .
