He had no particular area of interest: in avoiding specific goals he had avoided specific limitations. For the time being the world, life itself, could be his chosen field.

Every time I remember about "Revolutionary road" I feel like I'm going crazy because everybody are like "yeah these characters are equally unlikable and at fault for their own misery", and I am like... no they're not
Like, it's not super weird that apparently the book doesn't feature a lot of sociological gender analysis (I haven't read it, so I might be wrong), given that it is written by a man in 1961 but the 2008 movie? And even beyond that, the audiences' perception and reading of the movie? Suddenly everything we know about the tragedy and horror of the 50's housewife's life is out the window. The movie and the audience treat April as equally self- and outwardly destructive as Frank while she obviously always had less choice and opportunity than him and also never threatened her husband with physical violence.
I get it that she has flaws which are a part of the main theme and deserve to be examined as such, but her whole situation is so different from Frank's that it almost undermines their place in said theme, to me at least.

Now you’ve said it. The hopeless emptiness. Hell, plenty of people are on to the emptiness part; out where I used to work, on the Coast, that’s all we ever talked about. We’d sit around talking about emptiness all night. Nobody ever said ‘hopeless,’ though; that’s where we’d chicken out. Because maybe it does take a certain amount of guts to see the emptiness, but it takes a whole hell of a lot more to see the hopelessness. And I guess when you do see the hopelessness, that’s when there’s nothing to do but take off.
