We are in the back 9 of Jushin Thunder Liger’s career, and this month he’s spent some time doing “final matches” against certain wrestlers, and in certain promotions. On 11/14/2019, Liger went into TAKA Michinoku’s new promotion Just Tap Out, and defeated TAKA for one last time at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. (I think at this point, TAKA is out at NJPW as well. It’s been months since he’s been around to be ZSJ’s hype man, and one shouldn’t wonder that the cheating scandal that cost TAKA ownership of K-DOJO, now 2AW, cost him his position in NJPW as well.)

On 11/16/2019, Liger also took part in his final match in Michinoku Pro, teaming with Dick Togo against The Great Sasuke & Jinsei Shinzaki, however I can’t seem to locate the result of this match, or that show, anywhere. Meanwhile, this past weekend on 11/24/2019, Liger made his final appearance in Ryukyu Dragon Pro Wrestling in Okinawa, in a losing effort teamed with Ultra Soki against Gurukun Mask & Hija Kidman. There may be more events with Liger in the indies coming up, and we’ll keep you posted as they happen.

Also this past weekend, RevPro held the third annual British J-Cup at York Hall, Bethnal Green. Current IWGP Juniorheavyweight Tag Team co-champion El Phantasmo was the current reigning British J-Cup winner, and began the tournament beating Sensa Volto, leading to a post-match beatdown by ELP and Hikuleo on Volto, which brought the save by Shooter Umino! CHAOS members Robbie Eagles & Rocky Romero was in this as well, Eagles beating CMLL’s Barbaro Cavernario, whilst Rocky fell to Michael Oku. Oku would be the eventual winner of the tournament, outlasting Eagles, ELP and AEW’s PAC in the 4-way Final.

Also on the show, Ren Narita defeated Brendan White, whereas Tomoyuki Oka as Dominator Great O-Kharn joined with Rampage Brown to unify the RevPro Undisputed British Tag Team tiles with the SWE Tag Team tiles (SWE is a promotion recently absorbed by RevPro), beating MAO & Mike Bailey in the process.

The tour continues tomorrow, with the show being shown live on NJPWWorld.

- i might have to say both gen 4 & 7 bc i rlly love the gameplay style/mechanics in both of them! and diamond was the first game i ever Owned (and subsequently put. over 400 hours of time into.) so ive got a soft spot for it

NEW JAPAN IN THE UK — JULY 7 & 8

After rocking Long Beach in sunny California, New Japan travels next to England for two shows and two cups. First up...

WHATCULTURE PRO WRESTLING WORLD CUP JAPAN [JULY 7, MANCHESTER]

WCPW, in conjunction with NJPW and Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW), present qualifier matches for the Pro Wrestling World Cup (finals to take place in August). Two spots are available for representatives of Japan in the Cup, and eight wrestlers will be pushing through the bracket to earn those spots: Ryusuke Taguchi, Yohei Komatsu, Sho Tanaka, BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, KUSHIDA, Tiger Mask, and Jushin Thunder Liger. And in non-tournament action, Bullet Club’s resident umbrella-wielding “Villain” Marty Scurll takes on former IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champion Kyle O’Reilly, while powerhouse Rampage takes on “Stone Pitbull” Tomohiro Ishii (general admission tickets still available here).

Travel south in England to London the next day for

REVPRO BRITISH J CUP [JULY 8, LONDON]

The inaugural tournament features eight junior heavyweights competing to become the first winner of the British J Cup. The winners of each four matches go on to compete in a 4-way elimination match to earn the trophy (click here for the bracket). Competitors in the match are: Tiger Mask, Marty Scurll, Kyle O’Reilly, KUSHIDA, Ryusuke Taguchi, Will Ospreay, Josh Bodom, and Jushin Thunder Liger. In addition, the duo of Chris Brookes and Travis Banks, known as The Commonwealth Catch Kings (CCK), have their hands full against Los Ingobernables de Japon’s BUSHI and Hiromu Takahashi, and in what’s been branded a “dream match”, the notorious “King of Bros” Matt Riddle goes one-on-one with Tomohiro Ishii (sold out but join the wait list for last-minute tickets or find re-sellers here).

Wrestling Strike Over

I’m ending my wrestling strike on the fourth day. The RevPro British J Cup is up on World so I will be watching and reviewing that for later today. I continue to play on holding off watching other shows (NXT, LU, etc.) for another few days but we’ll see how long I can really go before cracking.

Post-G129 Press Conference: Ibushi Challenges Okada AND Naito for WK14, Full Super J-Cup, Royal Quest Lineups Announced; This Week’s NJPW on AXS

Last night/this morning, NJPW held their post-G1 Climax 29 press conference, which included statements from the winner, Kota Ibushi. Ibushi accepted the match contract at Wrestle Kingdom 14, to challenge Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. He also said, he would take challenges from EVIL and the newest Bullet Club member, KENTA, as they beat Ibushi during G1.

He then blew the doors wide open on Tetsuya Naito’s chances of becoming a double champion, by challenging Naito to defend the IWGP Intercontinental Championship the next night, on 1/5/2020, assuming Ibushi wins the IWGP Heavyweight belt. So there you have it. The seeds are sown, as they’ve been seeding them since WK13 -- Naito and Ibushi both gunning to be double champions, and they are one of the only real feuds that has happened in NJPW in 2019.

So aren’t you all glad you had your nervous breakdown about Naito, Twitter? He now has a bigger window of opportunity than he would have had he WON G1 Climax.

Needless to say, this all depends on if NJPW actually do bite on this, however it’s all scripted, and you don’t tease a storyline all year long and not pay it off.

NJPW also finally announced the final three entrants into the Super J-Cup, as CHAOS members Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles (which happened while I was on my hiatus, at the Souther Showdown shows in Australia) and Bullet Club’s El Phantasmo. Sadly, as suspected, the only people outside the NJPW/ROH/CMLL sphere of interest are Amazing Red and *spits* TJP. Which, the wrestlers are OK? But one of the appeals of the previous Super J-Cups were the combinations of wrestlers from other companies beside the hosts (Remember, NJPW was not always the host of Super J-Cup: WAR, Michinoku Pro and Osaka Pro had hosted in other years, although NJPW did host the inaugural event as well as the last two before this one). Now the Super J-Cup is an NJPW-centric single elimination tournament. Which is... OK, I guess?, but nothing special, other than it being held in the USA.

The full lineups will be below. NJPW is also stating that on 8/25/2019 in LA, Tetsuya Naito, Jay White and Juice Robinson will be appearing on that show.

The full card for the Royal Quest show in London on 8/31/2019 was also announced. Four title matches feature on this show, including an IWGP Heavyweight title defense between Kazuchika Okada v. Minoru Suzuki, who directly pinned Okada in a tag match yesterday. I was hoping this would be for King of Pro Wrestling. Also on this show, Tetsuya Naito will face the man who dumped him out of G1 Climax 29, Jay White, in a tag match, in what is surely build for a forthcoming IWGP Intercontinental defense.

According to NJPWWorld, all four shows listed below will be on tape delay of some kind; they’d best not wait too long since Road to Destruction starts on 9/4/2019. It also seems strange they wouldn’t have Royal Quest live during a weekend where a lot of wrestling is going on, what with AEW’s ALL OUT event going out live, but later in the day.

This might be it for me the rest of this week, until Super J-Cup begins, barring anything newsworthy. We are planning to return with a podcast this weekend to wrap up the G1 29 cycle, with a lot of rants and raves, and to talk Super J-Cup and Royal Quest some too. Stay tuned.
