Reylo Crossover Fic Recs

The theme of International Fanworks Day in 2023 is When Fandoms Collide, and as an avid reader/sometimes writer in the Reylo Fam, I can say that the Reylo Fandom does crossovers really well! I have so many favorites, I can’t list them all, but please reblog and feel free to add your own Reylo crossover favorites! I’d like to discover new ones!  

Pheylo - a crossover between Phantom of the Opera fandom and Reylo (Kylo Ren and Rey of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy).  This is a natural fit, and I wrote one of my own and have read many others, which I will list here:

The Phantom of Dagobah by Pandora Spocks

One year has passed since The Force Awakens. Rey is training with Luke when she is lured away and kidnapped by an obsessed Kylo Ren and taken to his secret lair in a cave on Dagobah, where he plans to seduce her by physical and psychological means to the Dark Side.

Kylo is written in a similar fashion as Erik in Phantom of the Opera. Genre is a Gothic romance/suspense. Edgy, emotionally volatile, slightly unhinged Kylo for the first half. (Rey will be fine.)

That's in 2017... There's probably more than one million websites being censored rn. I cannot even buy pride pin here because NO ONE outside of internet selling it! The censorship always begin from "banning information to protect children and moral from nsfw" down to censoring Spongebob Squarepants

You don't like something? Just don't fucking read it, it wouldn't stop the author to write and when they do stop writing usually after they are harassed so bad to the point of mental break down or suicide. What the actual fuck...

Beyond Good… Beyond Evil... Beyond your wildest imagination…

These are my personal thoughts regarding this pairing. I’ll be splitting this into three parts:

pre-Avengers: Infinity War

post-Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Holiday Special

post-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

pre-Avengers: Infinity War QUILL What's Smurfette doing here!? NEBULA Back rubs, dishes, killing gods, whatever I need to do to get a damn ride home. Most people only see their relationship from the point before Avengers: Infinity War i. e. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They were reluctant allies in their fight against Ego. All Peter knew about her was that she was Gamora’s sister, Thanos’ daughter, and one of Ronan’s underlings. Back then, they haven’t been on my radar. To be quite honest, I don’t have that many pairings that pique my interest in the MCU (except one from one of the recent MCU entries). Certainly, no ship from the Guardians franchise was on my radar. I’m sure that some renegade starbula shippers have been around back then. I wasn’t one of them. Kudos to you! post-Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Holiday Special “[...] as we come to them in Vol. 3, we realize that they are two leaders of the Guardians”. -James Gunn According to Gunn, there are “a couple of years between Endgame and Vol. 3”. Thor: Love and Thunder and the Holiday Special take place during those years. Peter and Nebula are well-established as the co-leaders of the Guardians at this point. They trust each other. The scenes that underline that - in my opinion - are at the beginning of Vol. 3 (Nebula (bridal) carrying Peter home, tucking him into his bed) and their spotlight during the hallway fight sequence towards the end of the film. I’ve always been and always shall be an ETL truther, add to that the dynamic of enemies-friends-lovers and I’m sold. And that’s the potential I’m seeing with this ship. Ever since Avengers: Endgame, they’ve been working together. They have a well-established routine as co-leaders of the Guardians as well as a synchronized dynamic during fights. They have each other’s back. We get to see Nebula’s softer side towards Peter (and Rocket) in Vol. 3. That last smile when Peters is on the ground, looks up at her and asks: “Did that look cool?” (bonus that he copied this from his sister Mantis, so my heart was already melting because of the sibling resemblance there). She just scoffs at his questions but smiles softly and helps him up. Be still my heart! Well, excuse me for seeing the possible potential between them. It’s the little things. At this point, Peter is still so caught up in his heartbreak that the mere thought of starting anything with anyone never even crossed his mind. It takes someone else pointing out the obvious for him to realize that there might be something there. post-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Nebula and Peter are roughly at the same stage in their lives by the end of Vol. 3. Peter returns to his grandfather. Nebula builds a community on Knowhere, the kind of home she never had. In a way, they’re both settling down. I could see them staying in contact, getting their opinion on important matters, or casual chats. Both of them are still in desperate need of healing from their past traumata and the loss that they’ve experienced. I don’t know if the powers that be that pull the strings in the MCU have any future plans for the characters or not. Do I want them to dip their toes into this relationship? Nah. Honestly, I don’t trust anything coming from the US anymore. I’m pretty jaded in that regard from past experiences (the reylo of it all). Do I want content creators to make fanworks? Hell yeah!!!! Feel free to add your thoughts. No character or pairing bashing.

I feel like people vastly overestimate how common Any Two Guys-ships actually are, or at least how popular they tend to be in fandom. Most of the time the popular fandom ships are either of protag/protag, protag/antagonist, or either of those/someone they interact with. Point being there's something for people to build on from canon, and sometimes it's a lot!

And even when a ship seems random there's usually some outside explanation for it. Some I can think of from the top of my head:

A was super popular, but self-inserts/Mary Sues were looked down on at the time so people used B as a stand-in (an explanation I've seen for MCU Coulson/Clint)

People kept accusing A/B writers of being racist/homophobic/etc because A/B weren't written perfectly, so the writers/artists jumped ship to C/D (not my fandom, but several of my Star Wars friends switched to Kylux for this reason)

fanwork of the ship got popular (so many ships)

"Hey wouldn't it make sense for A and B to get together based on Y thing?" "Yes it would!" (again, so many ships)

I almost listed more but realized the examples I had in mind actually aren't that random no matter what people say. Like I almost listed Reylo besides Kylux but, er, that's protag/antagonist.

Also, as pointed out by Olderthannetfic a while ago? People can't and won't agree on what's accurate characterization for any given character anyway. So even if I see something as wildly OOC for A in a fic, my friend X will think it's perfectly in character and friend Y, who would normally agree with me, thinks the fic sufficiently justifies A's behavior.

Also also, if those posts screenshot OP talks about annoys them so much? Ignore them, scroll by, and block the person as needed.

The wildest part of the manacled news is that in like a year and a half my brother's girlfriend is going to ask me at dinner if I've read this new book yet and I'm going to flash through my entire life in that moment

like on the one hand i’m all for it bc if the reylos get to control the publishing industry and people are already reading trash anyways, then i think sen deserves to finally get some money/acclaim for how much she’s been ripped off over the years. on the OTHER hand. even people reading in on ao3 cannot be normal or responsible or nuanced about it and i really don’t believe in cross pollination between fanworks and trad publishing (esp something like this which is literally a cross over with another series) so i do NOT want another wave of discourse about this story esp from like. normies. but it’s outside of my control (tragedy) so. happy for sen and i will continue to only talk about it with my friends fjdjdjdj EYES AVERTED IN PUBLIC…. WE NEED SOME COUTH….

Asking you Number 5: has fandom ruined a pairing for you?

Yes and no? I burned myself out super bad on Stucky through overexposure. I still like it as a ship, but I have absolutely no desire to engage with fanwork for it anymore.

And it's not so much that the fandom ruined Reylo for me, but I could never find anybody who shipped it in the specific way I wanted. There is nothing about this pairing that invites soft lovey anything. There needs to be blood and teeth and attempted murder, and there was sadly too little of that.

naut's book reviews 2023!

so i have read around 50 books this year! (the answer according to my storygraph is 45 books but listen i've done a lot of rereading and i want that to mean something so we're rounding up). here's my top nine!

not that i think anyone will argue with me but: this is just my highly subjective opinon! take this with the same grain of salt as a fic rec list, it's just what i've been enjoying this year!

1.) pretend to act surprised, it is The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir! honestly Gideon The Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, and Nona the Ninth are all competing for #1. i've reread them each in every format possible on multiple occasions. i've been in a permanent book hangover since i read it. this book. this book!!!!! it didn't feel so much as "right time right place" as a semi-truck to my frontal lobe. i had GtN on my bookshelf for MONTHS before reading and i wish i'd picked it up first. HtN and NtN just fundamentally changed my brain chemistry.

2.) The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon. she's here for one reason only and that's because i got to watch my favorite fanfic author get a book deal so i'm going to be really annoying about it. this is the bar for reylo-coded enemies-to-lovers that all romantasy will be judged by.

3.) Ninth House / Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. she was the reigning queen of the summer. ninth house and hell bent were so refreshing, especially after i'd read the shadow & bone series (spoilers: not my favorites!). absolutely obsessed. paired immaculately well with the new Sleep Token album.

4.) A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. this book absolutely delivers on exactly what it is! thank you for my life!

5.) Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. has a book ever had such phenomenal vibes. i really don't think so.

6.) there's a lot to be argued with "fanfiction doesn't count as reading a book" but if any piece of fanwork has transcended that barrier, it's Manacled by SenLinYu and this was the year i finally read it. i'm simply not the same person i was before i read this ! i am haunted !!!!!!!!!!

7.) Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. i'm really loving these smaller books he's doing because i love this man's writing but i've tried to reread the stormlight archives like three times so i can catch up. this was a delight. the endpapers made me weepy which is a weird flex for a book???

8.) The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. this snapped me out of my post-tlt hangover! reading this was a delicious fucking meal. i haven't finished the trilogy yet but this one was so, so, so good.

9.) Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. okay. listen. i decided to read every single book this woman has written. statistically one of them had to be good. it's hard for a seven book fantasy series to stick the landing but i'd argue she did it, i cried on my bedroom floor for an hour.

i've had so much fun reading this year 😭😭😭 i have so many books on my TBR i'm trying to get to.... and so many good ones!!! currently reading What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and i'm already having a massively great time.

maybe i will talk about the bottom of the barrel from this year 😭 i'm officially breaking up with romantasy as a genre, if i see another book called "x of y and z" i will throw up !!!!

One of my favorite things about all the Reylos coming back to Tumblr is that all the other shippers were so relieved to be rid of us because we always wrecked the metrics (remember #1 ship of 2020?). But now we're back and not only are we reblogging old fanworks, but there are tons of NEW fanworks appearing on the dash. Folks about to be mad.
