15.) Who knits an ugly sweater and who wears it with pride?

Tony gets nervous, and when Tony gets nervous his hands have to be doing something. So a couple of girls on their dorm floor invite him to their “Stitch N’ Bitch” nights, where he learns how to knit, sew, and embroider. Although quite often, he loves crocheting or knitting the best.

His specialty is ugly sweaters. He finds old patterns from grandmothers and estate sales and makes what are some of the worst sweaters that have ever lived.

Rhodey loves them all. All of them. He has proudly worn “Grandma’s Number One!” sweater more times than he can count, is obsessed with Tony’s creation that says “Lon Chaney Would Treat Me Right” on the back, and wears all of them and takes pictures with pride. He does not care how many people laugh at him, give him weird looks, or how exasperated his sister gets at each new sweater.

Tony loves to knit. He loves it a lot. The problem is that he loves knitting the most hilarious sweaters ever made, and no one else will wear them. (Except for Jan…sometimes.) So Rhodey takes all the goofy sweaters and wears them with pride and tells Tony how much he loves them.

Tony proposes with the ugliest sweater known to man. It reads “I Love My Husband More Than Anyone Else” all over the front. It’s done in burnt orange and olive green. It’s the worst one he’s ever made. Rhodey loves it.

The thing is... neither of them can knit. So when Momma Rhodes sends them both ugly sweaters in MIT, they don't know what to think.

"This is... ugly. Momma never knits ugly sweaters..." Rhodey wonders what his mother was thinking.

"It's homemade! I love it!" Tony is ecstatic.

They wear them when Roberta Rhodes visits. She laughs at Tony's joy. "I made them ugly," she confides in Rhodey. "I wanted to see if Tony would meet my expectations."

"And?" Rhodey prompts.

"He exceeds them. That boy is a good match for you."

rhodeytony seasons of love | spring, day three 🌸

who sneaks a kiss when they're walking in the rain?

over the years, rhodey has perfected the art of casual kisses and displays of affection. "don't ask, don't tell" has made him so very careful with his touches, so very calculated in how he and tony are perceived because tony is his soulmate, and rhodey loves him with every fiber of his being, but they both know they're playing with fire trying to make things work in secret.

and yet, they stick to each other like moths to a flame.

in the years after, when secret boyfriends become celebrity boyfriends become fiancés become husbands, when the casual hugs and knowing smiles are joined by public kisses and gentle touches, when the fighting is done and retired air force colonel doctor james rhodes and retired stark industries ceo doctor anthony stark do an architectural digest interview, finally showing off the elusive stark-rhodes townhouse in carnegie hill, they still remember the before.

back when things were new, back when they were just awkward teenagers in love, mindful of what the world expected (demanded) of them, but stubborn enough to for what they wanted (deserved).

stolen moments behind closed doors as they willed their roommates to stay away for a few more minutes, sitting close but not close enough for rhodey's afrotc "friends" to think too much of it, and spring break getaways to the other side of the world as they escaped reality for as long as they could.

there's a moment in particular that they think back on, one that makes their faces brighten and their smiles widen as they share a glance with decades-worth of meaning.

they're walking back to rhodey's double in baker after working on a project in the library. a light rain has just started to come down, and only rhodey has an umbrella because he has sense and checked the forecast for the week.

tony just grins at him cheekily when they feel the first droplets, inching closer to rhodey because he's going to share, right, platypus?

and rhodey just deadpans at him because yes, of course, he's going to share, but if his textbooks get wet as a result, tony's going to use that millionaire inheritance of his and replace them.

and that gets tony chattering about just how many things he would buy rhodey if howard didn't have someone report his expenses on a monthly basis, and he wasn't about to out them by spending a thousand dollars on—

rhodey opens the umbrella up in one, swift motion, and when he's got them protected from the rain, tony's face is flushed and he's stunned into silence because rhodey never does this, but he did, and wow, that was kinda hot.

and rhodey looks down at him, face schooled into a neutral expression, but the tips of his ears are flushed and his eyes are emphatic.

and decades later, when tony is telling this story to anyone who will listen to him, he makes sure to include how for the next three weeks, he kept accidentally-on-purpose forgetting his umbrella, trying to make rhodey kiss him like that again. 🌸

Rhodeytony seasons of love day one: Who tends the garden and who isn’t allowed near plant life?

Tony tends to things. That’s what he’s always done, with his relationships, the people he cares about, his work, the Avengers and the bots... he cares for things, sometimes at the expense of his own well-being. So it makes sense that the man turns out to have a green thumb on top of everything else.

He gets his first plant as a joke, from Peter. A spider plant from his spider kid for his birthday. Tony gives Rhodey updates daily, showing it to him over FaceTime when he’s away, and naming it Herman. Rhodey laughs, at first.

“You barely feed and water yourself when I’m not around, Tones.”

“You keep telling yourself that Honey Bear, but Herman here is thriving under my tutelage. You’ll see.”

And Herman does thrive, much to Rhodey’s surprise. And Peter’s. And... just about everyone’s.

When word gets out about Tony’s affinity for plants, he acquires quite the collection of new additions, carving out time and space in his day, home, and heart for his new leafy children.

He gives Rhodey a cutting of the original spider plant one day, pretends not to laugh at the panicked laugh on his husband’s face at the gift.

Tony will water it though. That’s what he does.

I absolutely positively completely forgot to crosspost my rhodeytony month posts from twitter SO !! If you didn’t know, this past November was RhodeyTony month and the theme was seasons of love!! So ! Without further ado I present:

RhodeyTony Seasons of Love

Week 1- Spring

Day 1 - Who tends to the garden and who isn’t allowed near plant life?

Well let’s talk about it right? I mean Tony loves loves loves gardening. It’s something his mama had taught him to do from the time he was a kid and it was one of the things he regretted not keeping up with immediately following her death. He clearly has a soft spot for doing the handiwork and Rhodey isn’t at all surprised to find a garden on the patio of their first apartment after college. Rhodey on the other hand, has killed far too many plants and by order of Mama Rhodes is no longer allowed near any plant life. Of course that’s an exaggeration but when he’s with his Mama? Well no siree he is not allowed near any of her plants. This becomes a funny moment for them because soon enough, when Rhodey is home enough after his first five-year deployment, Tony finally sits down and teaches Rhodey the basics of manning a garden. He gets it. Barely. And it’s funny because Rhodey eventually gets a tattoo of a purple dwarf iris — the flower Tony always has growing for him in their garden. As time goes on, the garden becomes a staple of who they are and how they care for each other in their relationship. And when Tony dies, Rhodey is left to care for the garden. It withers sometimes. It wavers in confidence. He shakes a lot. But he keeps the purple dwarf irises up. No matter what, his will always have those in their garden.

Types of rhodeytony first kisses

Meeting the family: holiday season, Rhodey getting teased for liking Tony, Tony being adored by the Rhodes family, the approval from everyone making Rhodey want to make a move. Sneaking up to the roof or having a quiet evening in Rhodey's room, stars twinkling above them, stars that are made of gas or stick to the ceiling. Soft and hesitant kisses are shared.

First date: having an awkward dinner and movie, trying to figure out how to go from friends to more than that, shyly holding hands, the pining from all the years being stuffed into this one first date. A first kiss that suddenly makes it clear that they're going to work.

Creating DUM-E: making the project together, brainstorming ideas, holing up in the lab, running high on adrenaline when the project is done. All those hours working together and finally having their project work morphing into one kiss. Suddenly, the project isn't the biggest news that evening.

Graduation kiss: they might be finishing together, they might not, but they're happy and nervous and so terrified of losing each other. The time is summer, they take deep breathes to gather courage and - they're finally kissing, after all those years.

Leave kisses: new lives, new paths. They've been separated for too long. One of them living the dream, the other carrying a legacy. They missed each other. They talk about their new lives, show each other new places to hang out, and they easily find a way to get back to who they are, even if as new people. This isn't worth losing, they realize. Not when they could be kissing, they realize.

Reunion kiss: they've lost touch after MIT. They had a fight, they stopped talking, they haven't seen each other in years. They still miss each other. They're still pining, even from afar, even without speaking. Work brings them back together. It takes a while for the ice to defrost. But they can't stand the distance - they pull each other close. Closer than they used to, close enough for their lips to touch.

Hospital kiss: Tony doesn't know what happened, but Rhodey is hurt. Rhodey is hurt, and he can't lose Rhodey. Sleeping near Rhodey's bed, throwing money to make sure Rhodey has the best care, talking to the family that are begging him to sleep. Rhodey wakes up. He's okay. Tony nearly lost him. So he kisses him, because he has to. Tears are running down his face, and he's desperately clutching at his honeybear, and Rhodey is kissing back.

Airplane kisses: drunken mistakes, slurred confessions, waking up in the morning with questions and regrets. Making out sloppily, laying on the seats of the private airplane, kisses not desperate but with so much pining behind them. They taste like alcohol and candy. They're supposed to be working, but they're kissing. It's fun in the moment, but it won't be in the morning.

Post Afghanistan kisses: sand on sand on sand, the pressure of losing his job, searching for the love of his life, thinking, "he has to be alive, he has to be alive." Rhodey makes a stupid joke and then sinks to the searing hot ground; hugging him to make sure he's really there. Kisses in the field hospital, in the private room. Fingers trace along his chest, along the rim of the reactor, looking at each other a little brokenly. They both kiss gently, both of them dirty and traumatised and so happy to see the other is alive.

Make up kiss: kisses after the fight. Rhodey finding out Tony was dying and telling him "that was a stupid fucking plan and I hate that it worked." Tony telling him "of course it worked, you'd always save people, no matter how much you love me." Rhodey thinks about his best friend and about losing his love, and how pissed he is at his plan and how Tony wanted him to be Iron Man after he died, and how much he is in love. He just leans forward and kisses him because they've waited too long.

Making the armors kiss: workshop kiss, designing the armor together, Rhodey learning all the secrets behind the suits, Tony teasing Rhodey about going to Hammer, Rhodey telling Tony that 'hot red' is not his style (or a good style). Their tension from the fight slowly coming apart as all they feel is how much they hate fighting. So, almost causally, they kiss. And as their lips touch, and they sigh into each other's mouthes, all the pieces of the puzzle click.

Shawarma kiss: Tony falls from the sky, like an angel, like a martyr, and the breath leaves Rhodey's lungs. He makes it there in a rush, because how dare Tony call him like that. How dare he say he loves him when he's drifting in space, it's so unfair. How dare he almost die on him, slipping between his fingers, the call disconnecting before Rhodey can say it back. Rhodey rushing into the restaurant, Tony being pulled up for a kiss, being clutched at desperately. Tony sinks into the kiss. All the Avengers are there, and it's awkward for them, but they don't care. It's their first kiss and only they exist in the world.

Avengers party kiss: the Avengers nudging them together, drinking a little to have warm cheeks, staring at each other while the other isn't watching. Maybe Tony likes how Rhodey gets along with his friends, maybe Tony finds Rhodey's stories adorable. Maybe they go into a private room for a moment and decide to just be together, to just, finally, kiss.

Post Civil War kiss: kisses in the hospital, kisses over newly designed braces, kisses to distract Tony from phones, kisses to show Rhodey that he deserves love even with his disability, kisses to show each other that they're still here for one another and they're not going anywhere. Kisses after bad times to start a better phase of their lives.

RhodeyTony Seasons of Love - Spring

1. Who tends the garden & who isn't allowed near plant life? 

Rhodey has the patience for plants & he even talks to them. He glares at Tony whenever he tries touching budding sprouts with his greased hands. And when Rhodey can't save a plant? Tony gives him 3 in hopes to cheer him up. "Said it does well in harsh conditions or something, hard to kill or whatever." And Rhodey smiles cause said plant reminds him of Tony. 🥺

2. Who’s better at spring cleaning & why is it Rhodey?

Rhodey is better cause idk, he actually cleans?? He has a playlist of his favorite music and jams out, he sweeps and he loves to organize the spice rack? He even organizes Tony coffee mugs. U and Dum-E help too 🥰Tony works best in mess, not wanting to remember where things are or make them fit. Rhodey respects it. But if Tony drops socks right next to the bin? Oh he knows he'll be served lukewarm coffee the next day.

3. Who sneaks a kiss when they’re walking in the rain?

Tony, of course! Once the sky goes dark, Rhodey rushes them toward the closest shelter, whether it be the car or building. But Tony always seems to slow down. It's when the sky opens, and the rain falls hard that Rhodey skips up ahead to hold the door open. Tony pauses, which Rhodey finds ridiculous. What if Tony catches a cold? He knows better than anyone that his colds last *weeks* instead of days. But that never matters to Tony. What does, is catching Rhodey by surprise with a kiss that stops time. It's the rain Tony loves the most. While everyone rushes by, it's the only time he wants to slow down. "We've got all the time, Rhodey." 

4. What is their favorite spring break memory from MIT? 

Tony tells people it's when he managed to convince Rhodey to go to Cancún, Mexico (aka THE place to be). But really? It's anytime Mama Rhodes invited the both of them. Tony's favorite moments were when they laid on the roof and looked at stars. "I'm gonna go up there one day," he'd say. And Rhodey would say, "Me too." Because for them it was possible. They would burn toast when attempting to help with breakfast. Tony always managed to get a good, embarrassing childhood story out of Mama Rhodes, which Rhodey loved to hate.

5. What flower reminds Tony of Rhodey? 

Tony would say a cactus. Yes, some may laugh but he certainly has his reasons. Cacti are resilient & strong, prickly if touched by those who have wronged them. It puts up a fight when necessary. He jokes & tells people that it symbolizes lust between two people. "I've got the hots for him, what can I say?" But it's more than that. And did you know that a cactus flower only blooms once a year? Tony would swear that was symbolic, only he doesn't have the words.

7. What flower reminds Rhodey of Tony?

Sunflowers remind Rhodey of Tony, it's so simple and easy to choose, he doesn't hesitate. They reach as far as they can toward the sun and they're just so bright. Several times Tony would find a bouquet of sunflowers sitting on his desk without a note. Specifically, after a long day at work. It's like Rhodey always knew when exactly to cheer him up. To have his lover mimic the brightness of a sunflower. Rhodey would do anything to bring back that smile on Tony's face. And just a few months ago, his curiosity got the best of him and he searched the meaning of sunflowers. And well, he found himself smiling bright as well. (Unwavering faith & unconditional love)

tales of suspense (1963) – a classic. 100/10. would read several times

iron man vol 1 (1968) – i’m on, like, issue 20 out of 300 something but it’s also very very good! the drama..the action……..wig

iron man vol 3 (1998) – obv i know youve read this one anon but for anyone out there starting comics this one’s SUPER good, and also Love Is Stored In The Tonyru

iron man vol 4 (2005) – listen this comic. so great, so iconic. maya hansen! epic fights! director stark! good art except for, like, the 6 issues of execute program but execute program is such a good story arc that you wont even notice! 

iron man noir (2010) – INDIANA JONES AU TONY STARK, LITERALLY THE BEST CONCEPT MARVEL’S COME UP WITH. PEAK COMICS IRONFAM

iron man legacy (2010) – i enjoyed this one a lot! i’m kind of confused as to, like, what’s going on but it’s fun

iron man season one (2013) – ok so this is, like, a modern remake of tony’s origin story and it’s..kind of average imo but thats ok! bc you can just look at the very very pretty pictures

iron man fatal frontier (2013) – tony becomes governor of the moon and fights doom! also he takes down an ai with weaponized fanfiction somewhere in there. read this one with a .cbr reader

invincible iron man vol 2 (2015) – gonna maybe fuck around and rec bendis’ entire iron man run bc . the art is gorgeous and the story isn’t the strongest but tony’s characterization is v good 

international iron man (2016) – ok i dont remember what happens in this one but alex maleev’s art is literally god 

invincible iron man vol 3 (2016) – RIRI WILLIAMS!!!! AND ALSO AI TONY STARK (MY SON MY BOY WHOM I LOVE)!!!!

new avengers vol 1 (2005) – as i have said before. new avengers GOT the sauce. stevetony and caroljess on one team was too powerful so marvel had to break em up with civil war . also stop reading this comic when you get to civil war

civil war: casualties of war (2007) and civil war: the confession (2007) – these are both oneshot comics and also the Only Civil War Content You Need To Subject Yourself To

spider-man noir (2010) – a break from the avengers stuff to tell you that this comic is very brutal and also very good

secret invasion (2010) – ok avengers emh did it better™ but this is still very neat! also it’s pretty trippy so its got that going for it too

siege (2010) – i dont understand what’s going on but the art is very good. also the avengers get to beat up norman osborn’s bitch ass

avengers prime (2011) – apparently this is the “stevetony bible” and …honestly there isn’t anything i can say in objection to that

avengers vol 4 (2010) – this comic is SUPER fun. after the fear itself tie ins the art and story get pretty eugh though so be careful

fear itself (2012) – BEST BEST BEST!!! my favorite crossover event in comics, with cool art and a badass storyline

captain marvel vol 4 (2012) – can we get a yeehaw for CAROL DANVERS . hell yeah. this is her first run with the name captain marvel and it’s Very Good

avengers: the enemy within (2014) – captain marvel vol 4 ends on a cliffhanger and the storyline’s capped off here

avengers vol 5 (2013) – ok so *clown noises* i haven’t exactly finished it but…this is the One Was Life The Other Was Death comic and it’s super good from what ive read so far

hawkeye (2013) – matt fraction’s run! everyone and their dog wants you to read it and you absolutely should if you have not. not too sure abt the volume numbering but heres a link to download in TPBs, it’s volumes 1-4

captain marvel vol 5 (2014) – this is the volume featuring chewie (!!) and carol in outer space with the guardians of the galaxy (!!!). super fun in general, would read again

ms marvel (2014) – again i am VERY confused as to what the official issue/volume numbering is, but here’s a list of TPBs that collect pretty much every kamala khan comic pre 2019 (im gonna rec all of them bc kamala is a treasure)

doctor strange vol 3 (2015) – literally everything i want from a comic tbh, also chris bachalo’s art is amazing

marvel 1872 (2015) – no one actually calls this Stevetony Bible 2 but lbr it’s basically Stevetony Bible 2

all-new all-different avengers (2015) – BEST AVENGERS TEAM EVER. EVER. PLEASE BENDIS WHY DID YOU BREAK THIS TEAM UP IM SAD

the unbelievable gwenpool (2016) – oh god oh fuck it’s miss GWEN POOLE . this comic is super funny and also surprisingly heartfelt, plus the art is . mmm.

champions (2016) – the gen z superhero team, i love all of them so much. i can almost forgive marvel for ending anad avengers

hunt for wolverine: adamantium agenda (2018) – so this is, after 11 goddamn years, closure for the first civil war regarding tony and the new avengers that sided with steve. amazing.

the life of captain marvel (2018) – the carol origin retcon is…eh. but it’s still very good! think of it as carol’s international iron man

avengers: back to basics (2018) – kamala goes back in time and accidentally reveals tony’s secret identity and it’s the funniest fucking thing

captain marvel (2019) – the first issue is everyone bullying tony which sucks but DONT LET THAT GET YOU DOWN bc it’s, like, actually good and also tony appears more in later issues without getting bullied

war of realms (2019) – i guess it’s a marvel rule that all crossover comics having to do with asgard are Top Notch? anyway

loki (2019) – AMAZING loki shenanigans and also the REAL reason you needed to read war of realms tbh

ironheart (2019) – gosh i love riri williams so much she’s so GREAT and you should DEFINITELY READ THIS

QUESTIONABLE™:

invincible iron man vol 1 (2008) – matt fraction’s iron man run…it’s ..ok story wise? however the characterization is a lil off at times and the art is HORRIBLE

iron man vol 5 (2013) – ok so this comic is super weird ? because it’s nice that tony spends time out in space but also it confirms that he’s a furry apparently. pretty much the only truly average iron man comic

avengers vol 8 (2018) – okay so i really like the art and the story’s okay but there’s a bit where tony flirts w carol and it’s the most ooc thing ive ever seen and that’s enough to land it in the questionable category

tony stark: iron man (2018) – i debated over whether to put this here or in the Bad™ category BUT valerio schiti’s art is too beautiful and the rhodeytony content fuels me. also issues 12 and 13 (war of realms) written by gail simone are pretty good. unfortunately dan slott wrote the rest and it AINT IT CHIEF

gwenpool strikes back (2019) – it starts off strong in the first issue but goes downhill from there and tbh it’s not really respectful of the previous gwenpool run

magnificent ms marvel (2019) – ok listen i love kamala a lot but if theres gonna be a romance plot between her and bruno it’s the electric chair

iron man vol 2 (1996) – just. don’t touch this. it’s a hot mess

civil war (2006) – i hate this. so much. it’s unreal. all you need to know is that steve was real close to killing tony in the end but surrendered when he saw that he no longer had the moral high ground. and also steve got assassinated right before he was going to be put on trial

mighty avengers (2007) – this comic had the potential to be SO good. unfortunately the artists for the actual avengers issues don’t respect women at all

superior iron man (2015) – they made tony evil and i could not be more angry with it. who even fucking wants to read this theres not even any emotional payoff for any of this

8.) Why did they spend the night in jail at MIT?

It wasn’t even real jail. This was like baby jail. It’s just a room in their dorm that their RA has forced them to go into because their “blitz” decorating of the hall for “Festivus.”

“You can’t celebrate any holidays on the dorm floor,” Mackenzie says tiredly. “They literally told us that they would take away our funding if they see any holiday decoration.”

“A huge aluminum pole? And they knew? I thought they didn’t watch television,” Rhodey says.

“Yeah, aren’t they…ancient?”

Mackenzie is trying very hard not to laugh.

“Why’d they let us decorate for Halloween, then? Isn’t that pagan holiday, technically?”

“I mean, well…”

“I’m not gonna stop decorating for Festivus,” Tony says. “I bought my clock and my bag and I wrote down all my grievances! I’m gonna post them to the elevator doors like I’m Martin Luther.”

“If you do that, I have to report you.”

“And? We’re both staying here over Christmas break, what’s gonna happen?”

Jailtime.

Jail is what happens.

Or, at least, MIT’s version of jail.

They’re moved to one of the small rooms, the one with the shit heating, and they’re currently shivering in the room.

One of the RA’s on duty lives next to them and has been having great fun blasting pop music until three a.m.

“I hate all of this,” Rhodey says. “God.”

“Well, why not make it worse?” Tony asks.

“How…define worse. We’d probably be put into actual jail.”

“Not if they can’t prove it’s us,” Tony says. “I think I saw that at the hardware store they’re having a sale on Christmas lights.”

“And what do you want to do with those?”

“…how sure is your footing?”

MIT gets a lovely addition to the usual town decorations, specifically on the Great Dome:

MERRY XMAS U FILTHY ANIMALS.

The school can’t actually prove that they did it. After all, they’re not the only students still on campus.

But when Tony gets Stark Tower in New York, he and Rhodey have a lot of fun decorating it with different lights and repeating the message the first year it’s up.

RhodeyTony Month- What voicemail does Rhodey leave Tony at 3am?

"Hey Tones, I know it's probably about 3am there. And I'm glad your not answering because that means you're asleep. It's lunchtime here, and I was just thinking of you. I miss you, love.

Today there was a kid who was brought into camp with her parents, not sure why. She reminded me of you. One look at my helmet, and she was taking it apart to fix it. My uniform helmet, not the suit - don't get all huffy and jealous like I know you were. She reminded me of you, though. I couldn't talk to her because all she spoke was Farsi and I only know English. I really need to take some lessons, huh.

Anyways, just wanted to call and check in. I'm going on a four day rotation so I won't be contactable... well, not contactable for most people. Don't swing your weight unless it's an emergency. You know you always come first.

Heh. I'm just sitting at the table here, looking like I'm talking to myself. These earbuds work wonders, thank you for them. But I'm getting a lot of weird stares.

Anywhoo, just want to say I love you, and I can't stop dreaming about you. I hope we can talk soon. I love you, Tones. See ya."

This year mods Inky and Rae have decided to host a two part event: a freestyle week in September and a mini-bang (5k-10k words) with submissions posted in November. This will let anyone participate, whether they prefer to create freely or within a structured event.

rhodeytony seasons of love | spring, day four 🌸

what is their favorite spring break memory from mit? 

the spring break trip of ’98.

now, there are more than a few spring break memories that will elicit a fond smile or an amused snort from rhodey and tony. they first labeled their relationship during a spring break trip, the perfect ending to a magical day on a small, italian island that became a safe haven they returned to throughout their entire lives. it was march 1997, and it was perfect.

but march 1998 is an entirely different beast.

march 1998 brings feelings of exasperation, embarrassment, and pride all in one fell swoop because march 1998? march 1998 was Spring Break With the Starks.

the story goes like this:

tony has every intention of flying him and rhodey back to italy for the second year in a row so they can celebrate their one year anniversary together, free to shower each other with love and affection however they please. he’s jittery with excitement, hummingbird energy dialed to eleven as he plans and counts down the days and everything is going perfectly until he receives a call from howard.

it’s quick and to the point: maria is turning fifty that year, and she wants a family trip. since her birthday coincides with tony’s spring break that year, they’re going to head to her family home in italy, and they’re going to have a good time, so tony better be on his best behavior.

and tony just kinda blinks because he bought plane tickets like two weeks ago, and he knows howard won’t get a report on his expenses for another week, so he has to be the one to tell the man.

and he does.

slowly, and oh, so very carefully, tony lets howard know he had other plans.

and when howard dryly replies, “with the rhodes boy, i assume,” tony prays to any god that will listen that this won’t be how he has to come out.

jarvis’s ghost must have put in a good word for him because to tony’s panicked silence, howard only snorts, “of course.”

and the two words are full of all sorts of patronizing meaning and implications of disappointment, but tony doesn’t think any of it is necessarily homophobic in nature, so he thinks he might just out of this alive, but then howard follows up with, “you spent thanksgiving with his family last year, but your mother and i haven’t met the boy yet.”

it takes a moment, but tony realizes where howard is going with this. he desperately wishes that he could divert the course, but there’s no way around it that he can see.

when rhodey comes back from his classes for the day, tony just greets him with an awkward grin and a very loaded, “on a scale of one to sixty-three, how opposed are you to being trapped on an island with my parents?”

the answer is 72.

and yet, what follows is quite possibly one of the most exhilarating weeks of rhodey’s short life because he is nothing if not stubborn. rhodey had planned on a week with his boyfriend, and he is going to get that week, howard stark be damned.

between sneaking into each other’s rooms when the sun sets, stealing minutes of affection when howard and maria are looking the other way, and not punching howard in the face when he calls rhodey one of the “good ones” multiple times throughout the week, rhodey ages seven years in seven days.

but it’s worth it.

because when they’re flying back at the end of the week, tony sleepily dropping his head on rhodey’s shoulder, the security of being seated behind the starks allowing them both to relax, rhodey replays the week in his mind and makes a realization. if they can survive the scrutinization of howard stark’s near constant supervision, then maybe they can make this work. maybe they’ll get the happy ending they deserve. 

and the thought makes him smile. 🌸

Rhodeytony seasons of love days three: Who sneaks a kiss when they’re walking in the rain?

There’s something about being pressed so close to Rhodey, their clothes nearly sopping wet even under an umbrella, and the rain thundering down around them, that makes Tony do it. He leans right into Rhodey’s space, nuzzling in close, and at some point, Rhodey turns to meet him halfway.

They’re no strangers to affection, but there are certain lines he’s never crossed — never let himself cross. But suddenly here they are, lips warm and welcome, sliding together for the first time right there in the rain.

Tony’s eyelashes are wet as he blinks up at Rhodey, stomach churning nervously, but it settles again when Rhodey grins down at him. He swipes a droplet from Tony’s nose and flicks it away.

“I get sick after this, I’m coming to find you.”

Tony decides that it’s well worth the risk. “Deal, Platypus.”

Some of my favorite Rhodey headcanons (this is gonna get long. Do with it as you please!)

- Ballerina Rhodey is my shit 

- Rhodey is president of the united states

- Sometimes Rhodey had to babysit Lila when she was a baby and it was an entirely new experience for him. cue: first diaper change. first late night. the uncle jokes (gosh the damn uncle jokes)

- He didn't initially want to join the military but he later found that he enjoyed the structure it brought to his life

- Mama Rhodes taught him how to cook because he was not about to live under her roof and expect her to cook for him every damn night.

- Rhodey is a huge science nerd!! He loved physics in college and when he started taking astrophysics he couldn't believe he had never heard of it before. 

- Rhodey not being able to tell his dad he loved him ate him alive until he realized that he never had to tell his dad he loved him for his dad to know.- 

- Rhodey was the president of MIT's Black Student Union

- Rhodey also did football for a period of time but found he liked watching it more than he liked playing it.

- His playlist is a mixture of different types of music but he enjoys instrumentals a lot

- Rhodey was very open with his emotions as a kid but when he went to the military he had to learn to keep his emotions in check.

- Everyone that ever met mit rhodey knew he was the biggest sweetheart on campus

- Rhodey made cute little notes to himself every day ("today's going to be a good day!" etc) and over time he started to do the same thing for Tony 

- Rhodey always dreamed of flying as a kid. The Air Force and the War Machine armor were simply outlets that he could use to get in the air

- He idolized Captain America as a kid but when he met Steve, he realized that above all else, he was just a man

- Rhodey as a famous singer and him writing a lot of songs for his husband !

- Rhodey is very very close w Roberta. He loves calling her to hear her voice and to hear everything that's happening back home.

- Rhodey likes to sight see.

- Rhodey's favorite part about being in the military is traveling the world

- Rhodey's house isn't as squeaky clean as people think. Sometimes he leaves it a bit messy before he's deployed and he enjoys coming back to that because his house looks lived in.

- Rhodey is bisexual !!

- He loves scary movies!

- He loves vacation days. He usually spends his with Lila and Mama Rhodes

- Rhodey likes to people watch

- His favorite color is green

- He's a sucker for kids movies

- He takes no bullshit from anyone. If anyone even attempts to lie to him, he'll be able to pick it up.
