Folks! I present my most self-indulgent AU yet (and the bar was high!) 

Modern AU in which jaded government bureaucrat ZZS is placed under a Beauty-and-the-Beast-esque curse and turned into a cat. The details of who/why/how aren’t important! But the only way to break it is to find his one true soulmate. Being a cat is hard and ZZS is lousy at it, and he’s basically wasting away in a back alley when WKX finds him and decides to rescue the pitiful stray. At first ZZS wants nothing to do with him, resisting his affection and acting as feral as possible to try and get him to give up. But WKX persists and eventually ZZS decides that if he’s going to be a cat forever, he might as well live the life of a cushy spoiled pet being pampered and sleeping in the sun. In fact, he comes to realize that he’s actually happier now than he was as a human where he worked a thankless job he hated and had alienated himself from all of his loved ones. But then one day WKX makes a throwaway joke/not joke and POOF! Cue the horrifying realization that the your beloved pet was a conscious human being all along and that he remembers everything you did/said in front of him. And Oh No! He’s hot!
